If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mastiff / Mixed (medium coat). Mingo is a Big Ol Lug who looking for that forever couch to hang out on. He has some issues with Food aggression, which is being worked on and protectivness of his home, which is also workable. Bad News: Mingo does have food allergies Good News: We know what they are. He is on a limited ingredient food. He must be on a limited ingredient food the rest of his life. Mingo came into our rescue from another shelter that would have euthanized him due to medical - possible allergies and badly infected ears. We believe Mingo to be an Shepherd/Mastiff mix. He is 7-8 years old and weighs 85 lbs. He is housetrained and listens well. He loves to go for rides in the car and walks. He is absolutely great in the car and has learned to walk nicely on the leash. Mingo does know some basic commands. His best fit would be a home with no small children or small dogs. He is a very LARGE boy and would be a good pal to another large breed dog. Very strong boy, will take someone with good dog handling skills. Mingo would love to have a home with a fenced in yard so he can run at his leisure. If interested in Mingo please e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com or call Jen @ 440-453-4990.

      Breed: German Shepherd Dog-Husky Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Husky / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (medium coat). ~~Thor is approximately 4 years old and weighs about 55 lbs. He had a very sad beginning to life and was rescued out of a hoarding situation last year. At this time ONLY people with experience handling abused and/or fearful dogs will be allowed to adopt Thor. Thor still needs a lot of training and assistance in figuring out how to “be a dog” and how to interact with other dogs. Thor is now able to walk up and down stairs, walk thru doorways, eat out of a bowl, and walk on a leash (with limited issues). He is UTD on shots, neutered, housetrained, & crate trained. He is getting better every day on leash walking. Thor is currently having some medical issues which we are attempting to get to the bottom of. Thor’s right eye has a damaged retina and cataracts. This means that he is partially blind in his right eye but does have some cloudy vision. For more background and up to date information please visit his Facebook Page, “Thor's Voyage”. He must have a home with a secure fenced in yard. Due to his background and some issues that he still has, Thor will not be adopted to anyone with small children or small pets. Thor seems to do better with female dogs versus male dogs, but still needs a lot of work interacting correctly with other dogs. If interested in Thor, please e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com or call Peggy @ 440-452-1619.

      DUKE

      rescue
      Breed: German Shepherd Dog
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (long coat). ~~Courtesy Post for Owner: Below is what was written or told to us: Summary: Duke is a fantastic dog who just needs a household to give him the exercise and attention he needs. I had been looking for a dog for a while who was energetic and friendly, so I could take him on my runs with me. I also live with my dad who has a dog, so I was hoping to find someone to keep him company during the day. I found Duke in a Craigslist ad that said he was great with other animals, current with all shots and very energetic. I was really excited when I found him, because I know German Shepherds can run for miles without getting too worn out. When I picked Duke up from his owner's, he jumped all over me and was acting very excited. We drove him to the pet store to find him some bones and toys that he likes before going home. When we entered the store he was fine, but as soon as he saw another dog he absolutely lost it. He was barking very loud and pulling on his leash. I don't think he has ever been around another dog because of this reaction. We left the pet store and drove home so we could introduce him to our current dog. We put them both outside and slowly brought them closer together to see how they react. Duke charged towards our dog and broke free from our leash, and clamped his jaw on our dog. We were able to pull him away and separate them, but he did leave a few puncture marks. Since then, Duke has been staying at my mom's house where I have been training him daily and taking him for runs. He is an extremely smart and capable dog, but he simply cannot be in a household with other dogs or cats. I can't keep him because he does not get along with other dogs, but he will be GREAT in a household with no other pets! Duke is able to sit, stay, and he walks very well on a leash. He is very smart and is learning fast. He needs to have lots of exercise every day because he is very energetic. If you don't let him run around outside, he will pace around the house bored. I want to find him a good home where he will be taken on walks and will be able to get plenty of exercise in daily. He is a really great dog and is very friendly to humans! The first thing he did when I met him was roll over so I can pet his belly! He is 21 months old and neutered. PLEASE NOTE: Duke is not a Hartman's Hounds dog. If interested in Duke, please contact jqh4@roadrunner.com or jan@dogshope.com.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Border Collie / Mixed (medium coat). COURTESY POST: CONTACT DOGSHOPE@DOGSHOPE.COM Below is what was written to us: Unfortunately I'm writing you in the hopes that you can help me re-home my dog Tilly who is a 3 year old German Shepherd/Border Collie mix. We were hoping that you could help us to find a home for her with someone that has no other pets and can give her the attention she needs. She recently got into a huge fight with my 7 yr old dog leaving her with severe injuries. This is the second time they have fought this bad in the year and a half since we got Tilly and we can't let it happen again. She is fine with meeting other dogs out on walks or at the vets office and does the normal sniffing and such upon meeting another dog, the aggression is more so towards other animals in the house. She has never been aggressive with people, only my other female dog. She is a huge sweetie with everyone else she meets. She is up to date on all of her shots and is spayed. She loves car rides and squeaky toys. She loves to chase the birds and sometimes thinks she can jump high enough to join them. She weighs about 45 pounds, we've had her for a year and a half and adopted her from a shelter. We also have 2 cats and while she has never hurt either of them she can be a bit rough with them sometimes. Comment from Jan & Deb: Just because Tilly is acting up with another dog, it doesn't mean she has issues with people. Deb & Jan both have had dogs that didn't get along with other dogs, yet they were two of the most loving dogs each of us could have had the honor of having in our homes.

Posted Breed: Red Heeler / Beagle / Mixed (short coat). UPDATE: 10-10-17 Abby in foster home. Listens really well. Plays with the cats. Loves to play fetch. Being Crate Trained. Very active little girl. Is going to be a great dog once her confidence is built and she gets through her puppy stage. Abby was given up by her caregiver's and turned into a shelter because they felt she was too protective of her caregiver and kids did visit. She did live with older children and did well. Abby is housetrained and has all of her house manners. She is still very young so will need consistent training as well as a caregiver who shows her what is expected of her. She is only about a year old and only weighs 30 lbs. We believe her mix to be Red Heeler/Beagle so she will need daily activity. We would also prefer that Abby has a fenced in yard and her home should only have children who are in their teens. Abby will make a wonderful companion with a strong leader. If interested in Abby, please e-mail hartmanshounds@gmail.com or call Peggy @ 440-452-1619.

She had been overbred, abandoned and then overlooked at the local kennel. She then found herself on the urgent list when they took her in. She literally had no clue what appropriate social behavior was. She just wanted to love everyone and every dog she saw. But,her approach was way too enthusiastic. Well, 9 months of patience and love, evaluations from trainers and consistent positive training is making her an excellent companion. Princess is 4-5 yrs old and loves all people. Her Tail is always wagging ( that's her trademark) and she shows everyone that the myth about pitbulls is just that,a myth. Princess is fully vetted and good with other dogs, older respectful kids, but, NO CATS Please. Contact ditrhdrescue@gmail.com
