Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). This dog is located and fostered in Tennessee. FREE ADOPTION TO APPROVED HOME! Are you an active person looking for a dog to take running, hiking, biking, or train for agility? If you are, then you need to check out River! River is a playful, fun loving Boxer mix who is always ready to go. He is highly food and toy motivated, and loves to have a job to do. River has graduated from basic obedience class and knows the commands "place", "sit", "down", "stay", "wait", "leave it", "front", and "shake". He is house trained, crate trained, knows his table manners and is a baby-gate hurdle champion. He loves car rides, sleeping on the bed (when he's allowed), working on his training and playing with his doggie friends. A household with older children would be a good fit, as he is very active and excites easily. He would be best in a home with no cats, as he thinks it's great fun to chase them. River would be great for with someone who is experienced in dog training, he does well with consistency and loves to learn. River weighs around 50 pounds and comes already neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccinations. He is heartworm negative and on preventives for parasites. Still need a reason to make this boy your best buddy? Just look at that goofy smile and his adoring eyes! River would love to see his doggie school diploma hanging on your wall! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

This gal has a personality that is even prettier than her beautiful eyes and speckled merle coat! Annie is a 6 month old, 40 pound Catahoula Leopard Dog, and her looks are just half of her charm! She is also super smart and very well mannered. Her foster mom thinks she will adapt very quickly in her new home and seems to have never met a stranger. She loves to go for walks, enjoys the companionship of other dogs and even children! Annie does amazingly with her tiny tot human foster brother and adores all the attention from him she can get! She will follow you around the house and lie down when the time is right to chill. She's a very easy pup who is crate trained and doing excellently with her basic obedience! Annie is deaf and is being fostered by a local trainer who is teaching her to respond to vibrations on a remote collar. Her inability to hear is not a hindrance at all when it comes to her affection for her humans. Catahoulas are an independent breed so a little structure and training will go a long way when training her. Annie is looking for a family who is excited about communicating with a deaf pup and prefers a home with a fenced yard for her safety. If you think Annie needs you, please apply today! Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). This dog is in Tennessee. Adoption Donation $175 if picked up in TN, $225 plus transport fee for out of state adoptions. At about 17 months old and weighing 47.5 lbs., this sweet girl is currently in foster care to learn what being an inside dog is all about! Surrendered as an "Aussidor" (Aussie and Lab mix), Saige previously roamed the woods on a ten-acre lot; but her busy family felt she would be happier if she had some friends (human and canine) to play with. Apparently self-housetrained (no accidents for over a month), Saige gets along with dogs of all sizes (loves to wrestle and chase--see video!), respects cats, and loves playing with the foster's pre-teen boys. Getting experience with toys and household manners (as well as light flashes in the photographer's studio!), she is discovering a whole new world to enjoy...and she's making the most of it! At Saige's young age and bright spirit, she is prime for learning whatever you want to teach her. A fenced yard, lots of exercise, and love from the heart are among her requirements for a new home. Already spayed, heartworm negative, up-to-date on vaccines, leash-trained, microchipped, and on parasite prevention, Saige is ready for a meet-and-greet when you are! Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). This puppy is in Tennessee. Adoption Donation $175 if picked up in TN, $225 plus transport fee for out of state adoptions. Make magic happen by falling in love with Marina, a stunning and smart 1 year old Terrier mix. Marina is a goofy, energetic, and eager-to-please "luvabull" 60 lb girl! She is all about living life to the fullest. Marina has been thru a 4 week professional training course and has learned all her basic commands (be sure to watch her video!) and is happy to learn whatever you care to teach her. She is very human-oriented, and craves to be the center of your attention and affection. Marina does well on a leash when wearing her Easy Walk halter, and is always up for a walk or hike. She delights in playing with her toys and will fetch them until she gets tired or hot, and then she will find a cool place to lay down and rest with them. Marina is being fostered in a country home setting and revels in running across the fields, splashing through the creek, and riding shotgun in her foster dad’s ATV. Marina is looking for an adopter that understands what it's like to live with a playful puppy in a big dog body, and, also one that is up for some serious snuggle time when the day is done. She dreams of a home with a big yard that will allow for plenty of playtime and daily exercise. Marina's current home does not have cats, but she has been around them and is politely curious of them. Marina is housetrained, spayed, up to date on vaccinations, current on heartworm and flea/tick prevention, and ready to meet her forever family. Looking for a sweet, loyal young pup that is affectionate and playful? Look no further than Marina, she will make you smile, laugh, fall in love, and wonder how you ever lived without her. Adoption Donation $175 if picked up in TN, $225 plus transport fee for out of state adoptions. Enigmatic Enzo! This strikingly handsome fellow is searching for a forever home - and he hopes you will take a moment to gaze into his mesmerizing blue eyes. Enzo is about 5 years old and he must be a unique combination of breeds! We have had several suggestions (Husky, Heeler, Malamute or even Dalmation!) but his breed mix is a mystery. What we do know for sure is that he generous in his affections for people and he loves to give hugs. His absolute favorite thing to do is grab a toy and carry it around. At about 65 pounds currently Enzo is a large, happy dog. He adjusted well to his foster home with several other dogs and would be ok to go with a home with other dogs and maybe dog savvy cats. Enzo is very food motivated and is learning to Sit for treats and is eager for you to teach him more. He is crate trained and would very happy to have a fenced yard to play in. There's another important thing to know about Enzo... he is currently being treated for heartworms, his prognosis is good, and AARF covers the cost of treatment. If you would like to give Enzo the home he is so hopeful for, please contact us today for more info! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Yellow Labrador Retriever (medium coat). This dog is in Tennessee. Adoption Donation $175 if picked up in TN, $225 plus transport fee for out of state adoptions. Zoe is a gorgeous, 5 year old Yellow Lab who is healthy and happy and weighs in at 75 pounds! She is a very affectionate and friendly girl, who bonds to her people, and would make a great fit for a home with someone who wants a loyal, devoted companion. This sweet girl has some very attractive traits: she's already house trained and walks well on leash. Zoe knows the Sit! and Shake! commands and loves to fetch toys and balls. Play time would probably be near the top of Zoe's wish list in her new home. After all, she is bred to retrieve and since she loves to please her owner, it makes her proud to perform well. Zoe would do well in a home with a fenced yard and with a family who likes to know when someone is on the property or at the door. She'll bark to alert you, but settles down when reassured that all is well. Zoe has been in the same home since she was brought home as a puppy and has had a much older male sibling dog with sight issues and has been a bit jealous of him at times. She would probably enjoy being the only pet. Zoe's owner is no longer able to care for her due to health issues. Do you have room in your home and heart for Zoe? If so, she is ready for adoption. Apply today! If you are interested in this pet but have questions, visit the Pet Inquiry Form: http://aarf-tn.com/contact/pet-inquiry-form/.
