Posted Breed: Brussels Griffon (short coat). Little dog, Big personality! Date into Rescue: 04/27/2015 Reason for being in rescue: We rescued Whiskers from our local shelter Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Weight: Est 8 lbs Height: Est 11" Adoption Fee: $125 What's my story? It's quite a story. On 4/19/2013 a cute little dog was taken to the local shelter after being found by police. No microchip was found and no owner came forward so the people at the shelter started looking for a home .On 5/28/2013 they found that home with a lady named Elizabeth. It could have happened anywhere in the Carolina's, right? Sure it could - but Whiskers was found running at large - in Oregon. That's a far piece from South Carolina. Two years later, our Whiskers is once again picked up running at large. This time, a scan of his little body found a microchip implanted by the Oregon shelter he was adopted from. The chip was registered but attempts to contact the owner have gone unanswered. The phone # on record rings fast busy and the email's are ignored. After working with our new partner in Oregon on this, we've all agreed that it's best to find Whiskers a good home right here. What is my personality like? Whiskers has some behavioral issues, and a home without children is a must. He will show you his teeth, growl and snap over many things. He is a big resource guarder. He will guard his crate, his food, his toys, his treats, his friends and most importantly his human. Whiskers can be quite temperamental, possibly an indication of a bad past. He is in love with one of CPR's employees and does great with her. She can handle him, get him out of the crate, etc. Even with her, however, he will growl and guard treats. He also does not like his faced to be touch. On the positive side, he is a real cuddle bug. .He knows how to gives hugs and loves to show you. He will lay his little head on your shoulder to let you know he is there and that he loves you. Whiskers is very playful and loves to play with other dogs his size. Ideally, finding a trainer would be best. He seems to like women more than men and would thrive best in a home with someone that lives completely alone. He has been cat tested and was fine with the cat. Age: est birthday 04/19/2011 Please understand that these are rescued dogs, and sometimes their ages are only a guess. We urge all of our potential adopters not to fall in love with a picture, and not to discriminate against older dogs. You never know which dog will steal your heart when you meet them! How I act when I first meet new people: Scared Please note - we do not ship dogs. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. To apply, please visit our webpage at www.carolinapoodlerescue.org and visit the tab on the left that directions you to the online application. Please note that when screening applications, we look at the entire home and then make suggestions based on what would be a good fit for your home. You are not being screened for a specific dog although we are looking to see what type of dog interests you - poodles or non poodles, color, age, etc. Others here may be a better fit for you. It is very difficult to get to know a living animal from a picture and a short description. Since we are constantly getting in new dogs, this may be a dog not in our listings yet. We want you to be very happy with your new companion and will make suggestions based on what you tell us about you. You can also read our adoption tips page for hints and helps on adopting a rescued dog. http://www.carolinapoodlerescue.org/AdoptionTips.shtml or for general information on Carolina Poodle Rescue, please visit our FAQs - http://www.carolinapoodlerescue.org/FAQGeneral.shtml If you are interested in providing a home for me, please complete our Adoption Application. More About Brussels Griffon Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Date into Rescue: 5/30/2017 Reason for being in rescue: Found as a stray in eastern North Carolina Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? None noted Weight: 50 lb Height: about 24 in at the shoulder Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? Yes, she is very energetic! What kind of home would be best for me? Mia would be great in a number of settings as long as her people are energetic and do a lot. She is a lot of girl. She is good with other dogs and didn't react to our cats here, so should be good with a cat in the home. She is not a fan of children 10 years or younger; her forever home must have older, mature kids or adults only. What is my personality like? Mia is very affectionate. She loves people. She also loves toys. She will chase after them and play. She can sit on command and seems to listen really well. Still has a habit of jumping up on people, but that can be corrected. How do I act when I first meet new people? Mia needs an active home that understands that big girls need play time and running time. She'd be a great running companion. Other tips and tidbits: She has lots of energy and does well with the big dogs in the field. She doesn't pay any mind to the little dogs. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. A dog house trained in my home may not be in yours. We will help you teach your new dog this necessary skill and based on your schedule. Please note - we do not ship dogs. Date into Rescue: 8/25/2017 Reason for being in rescue: Pulled from a SC shelter, was found as a stray Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? None noted Weight: 44 lb Height: 19-20 in at the shoulder Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? I would love a fenced in area to explore in.. Or just a lot of walks. What kind of home would be best for me? I am looking for my retirement home somewhere maybe on a farm where I can bask in the sunshine and go on lots of nature walks. What is my personality like? I'm a older lady but not too old! I still love to wander through the woods and play a little with dogs of my size. When I am outside there is nothing stopping this nose from working. I could sniff and roam all day long and come home to soak my paws and take it easy. That would be the perfect life for me. I don't ask for much! I get carried away while on a leash so a harness would be best to walk me with since I like to pull. Treats? Ooooh I love them. This lady at Carolina Poodle Rescue thinks that I know basic commands but it has just been awhile since this gal has had to do them. My story is short and sweet.. I was found as a stray in South Carolina and taken to a local shelter.. but now I am at the farm! I don't get to roam as much as I'd like to though.. and I would also love to be reminded on how to be a pet again. How do I act when I first meet new people? Friendly.. but it is hard to get my attention with my nose to the ground. Other Tips and Tidbits: House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. I already knew Zoey was a sweet and loving girl, but she pleasantly surprised me. She walks great on leash, couldn't ask for any better! She got along great with Bobby Grey (the cat), they even started to play together a little. She is one big love bug that is seeking someone to be the center of her universe. She gets along fine with all dogs and has such a wonderful disposition about her. She knows how to sit on command and actually likes to chase after tennis balls. It's very endearing seeing her enjoy her time outside of her cottage. She's low key and doesn't require too much, she would just be happy to be in a loving home and have that happy ever after. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? None noted Weight: 65 lb Height: Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: $99 Fence needed? Yes, he needs room to run! What kind of home would be best for me? I would love a home with lots of excercise and playtime, maybe a field to run in and play and at the end of the day when my family and I are all tuckered out we can go lay on a comfy bed in front of a fireplace! Dreams can come true, right? What is my personality like? I am nothing but sweet! I'm still getting used to everything around here but considering everything I've been through (hurricane Irma and moving so much during rescue) my caregivers say I'm doing great! I like to howl at the moon when I'm outside at night like a true-to-breed hound and I love to play with people and give hugs! How do I act when I first meet new people? I am sweet and loving a bit shy at first but I warm up to you between snacks and rubbing behind my ears. :) Other tips and tidbits: I'm really smart. I am highly treat motivated and know how to sit, hand shake, lay down and when my caregiver said play dead I even rolled over on my back belly up! House trained? While we like to know what you like in looks, a dog is more than a pretty face. Our goal is to match you with the best possible pet for you and your home. We want to create furever families. Our descriptions contain all that we know about this dog today. We'll update as more information is known. Are you looking to adopt within the next 30 days? Date into Rescue: 5/26/2017 Reason for being in rescue: Found as stray Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? Huckabee has heartworms. He will be sent home with 12 months of heartworm preventative. This is called the slow kill method . Please check with your veterinarian before adopting a dog with heartworms. Weight: 24.3 lb Height: est 20 in at the shoulder Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? Yes What kind of home would be best for me? Huckabee is looking for a family with a lot of experience in taking care of dogs. A typical hound, Huckabee has a strong personality and a desire to shape a really nice basic personality into a wonderful dog. Huckabee is bright - and bright kids need loving structure or they will take advantage of you. What is my personality like? Huckabee is a sweet lovable boy but he's definitely a strong personality. For example, he walks on a leash, but he likes to lead. He is intent on going where he wants. He is also good at slipping between feet and through gates. That can be dangerous and he needs to be taught to respect boundaries. He has spent time playing with dogs much larger than he is and did well. He loves the freedom of a fenced in yard to run and play in. A very sweet boy who would love to find someone to play with and to snuggle with. Not great on a leash, but manageable. I would recommend a harness, as he seems unable to connect straining the leash and choking himself. He is food motivated, and occasionally will play with a toy. If he is with another large dog, he is a little scared and wants to make sure he isn't trampled on. Didn't seem to mind the cats. How do I act when I first meet new people? Friendly and inquisitive. Other tips and tidbits: When introduced to a new group of dogs and a new area of our farm he had not been to in the past, he enjoyed the stimulation of a new environment, smelling new smells and marking his territory. So far, we've introduced Huckabee to a kitten who is not very active yet as she is too young . Our caregiver could not make a good call on whether he would be good with cats based on this one encounter. He wasn't aggressive, but at that point he was overwhelmed by seeing new dogs and new smells and a new place. He was busy taking it ALL in. He'll need to be cat tested again if a cat owning home is interested. The boy is a good guy. But he is young and very active. He can't focus on one on one time. His mind and body are going in many different directions. He's a cutie and he needs some work *as most young dogs do) but he has a great disposition and that you can't teach. If you are interested in adopting, please take a look at the distance between the foster home location and your location and make sure you are willing to make that trip. Most of our dogs are at our farm in Pacolet, South Carolina. Thank you for considering CPR.

He would love to have someone take him on nice walks and maybe even cloud watch. Other dogs do not bother him. Actually, nothing really bothers him because he is always calm and collected. Date into Rescue: 09/07/2017 Reason for being in rescue: Found as stray Foster location: Foster home in Rocky Mt, NC Special Needs? None Weight: 5 lb at about 2 months old, unsure how big she will get but we think around 20 lb or less Height: about 7 in Spayed/Neutered: No, she is too young, she will be adopted out on a spay/neuter contract Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? No What kind of home would be best for me? One that understands the time and energy it takes to raise a puppy. Coco is a sweet and smart girl, but she is full of energy and needs lots of training (just like any puppy). Good with other animals (dogs and cats) and people, including kids. We are seeking a home with an experienced dog owner and someone who is home more than they're away. What is my personality like? She is very gentle and sweet by nature, but she is currently teething and still needs to learn a lot of things. How do I act when I first meet new people? Very friendly! She is a puppy and loves everyone! And she really loves hanging out in laps and cuddling! Other tips and tidbits: Coco loves the oudoors. She is crate trained and very social. She is working on leash training. Coco is starting to learn some basic commands, like sit and come. She sits for her breakfast and dinner, although getting her to stay long enough to put her bowl down has been up and down. She does eat FAST, and with that we have figured that she is a “chow hound,” meaning she is probably food motivated. Although at the same time she does very well with praise, and loves attention from people. So far she is really not much of a barker - only when she's responding to something or other dogs bark first. House trained? She's a puppy working on her house training! Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. Date into Rescue: 9/9/2017 Reason for being in rescue: I'm one of Hurricane Irma's orphans Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? none noted- I do have a small mass on the right side of my eye but I am in no pain Weight: 54 lbs Height: estimated 22" at the shoulder Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: $99 Fence needed? Yes, I really need a fence. What kind of home would be best for me? I need a active home that could possibly give me a job to do! What is my personality like? I am a hurricane Irma orphan that was rescued with a few others by Carolina Poodle Rescue. One of the "breed experts" here believes I am a Belgian Shepherd Malinois hound mix and I have the personality to go with it. No, these people do not know my past but they do see I have a drive for something. What that something is we have not figured out yet. I am pretty independent right now, I don't need loads of attention or gushy baby talk because I am an adult dog and don't have time for those silly things. My caregiver thinks that I can learn to bond with someone but it will take a special person to bring that out in me. Who knows... maybe I have gone a long time without being a family dog and may need to learn how to be that. I am very assertive and alert, you can't sneak anything by me! I don't miss a beat. One of my caregivers say I have a lot of potential to become something great and the want to go with it. I am not the happiest here... all I do when I am outside is stare out the fence and bark because I desire so deeply to be a part of the action. How do I act when I first meet new people? Friendly but I pay more attention to things going on around me. Other tips and tidbits: I do not walk on a leash very well, I pull with all of my might but that can be helped with the right kind of harness and training. I am very treat motivated and I know how to sit and give hand shakes. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained. Date into Rescue: 6/16/2017 Reason for being in rescue: Owner release due to the declining health of the owner. Foster location: Dreamweaver Farms, Pacolet SC Special Needs? None noted Weight: 18 lb Height: About 13 in at the shoulder Spayed/Neutered: Yes Adoption Fee: $200 Fence needed? No - Sissy walks well on leash What kind of home would be best for me? Beautify Sissy was once the apple of her dad's eye but eye surgery robbed him of his sight and he could not look out for Sissy. During this time, they lived at an assisted living facility, Sissy got very protective and even though Dad told people not to come to his apartment when he was gone for Sissy didn't like that, a housekeeper did. Sissy took offense to the intrustion and chased the housekeeper out, nipping her in the process. Sadly, housekeeper's do not take kindly to that and reported the incident. Sissy's choices were looking very slim when CPR stepped in. Sissy's best home would be one that has a separate house and that understands that, as long as she knows she's not in charge, she has no reason to resource guard. Sissy also gets along ok with other dogs, but would also be very happy being an only dog. What is my personality like? Sissy has lived a fairly quiet life but because they lived in assisted living, she met a lot of people and is actually fairly social. She doesn't do well with lots of chaos and I think longs for the quiet days sitting on her dad's lap, but she does need a lot more exericse than she was getting and she is thriving living on the farm and walking with her foster pack. How do I act when I first meet new people? A bit stand offish but she is friendly enough. Other tips and tidbits: Sissy is one of the few dogs we do not crate train. She is pretty well house trained although she'll need reminders. She loves to sleep cuddled up next to her foster dad at night. House trained? Dogs can be house trained if they are in the right environment and are allowed to follow a schedule as long as a physical reason doesn't keep them from being trained.
