Posted Breed: Bull Terrier / Great Dane / Mixed (short coat). Meet Gable! Have you ever seen such a handsome dog?! Look at those gorgeous eyes! But you know the saying- "beauty is only skin deep". Well, Gable may be handsome, but he also has a spectacular personality. Good looks and all around awesome- what more could you want in man’s best friend? He is a laid back dude who loves sitting next to you. A good cuddle is high on his list of priorities in life . He does great with medium to large dogs. He loves to play, but does not get overly rambunctious ! He has great house manners. Still doesn't sound like the PERFECT dog yet? I forgot to mention how smart he is! He will listen intently and seems to understand every word you are saying. How was SHR lucky enough to gain such a sweet and intelligent boy in our program? Well, Gable’s previous "owners" obviously didn't recognize how amazing he truly is- he was dumped and left all alone to fend for himself on the mean streets of Houston. He would follow anyone who would talk to him. Nice people in the neighborhood had been feeding him but were unable to get a leash on him. Our volunteers went out to get him and his new life began. He wasn't so sure about them putting the leash on him. Unfortunately, he had learned that it was hard to trust anybody when you are just trying to survive. However, after a few treats he figured out they were ok, and was off to a much better life! He LOVES car rides, and rides so perfectly in the car. That part of Gable's life is over and he is moving forward. Gable is a 4 year old, sweet male Bull Terrier/Great Dane/American Bulldog mix ( per his DNA results !) Would you like to foster this awesome boy ? He would be so happy to be part of a family again! Better yet, would you like to adopt Gable? He is neutered, microchipped, and vaccinations up to date. If you are interested in fostering or adopting Gable, please contact us at info@scoutshonor.org. You can read all about our foster and adoption process, as well as make a donation for his care, on our website at www.scoutshonor.org. As always, Scout's Honor pays all costs associated with fostering, and if requested, the foster can receive a tax deduction receipt from Scout's Honor for all of his or her own documented expenses related to fostering.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Yellow Labrador Retriever / Husky / Mixed (short coat). Meet Lenny! This sweet guy was found out in Humble on the soccer fields. As soon as people showed up he made his rounds to see who was going to help. Lenny is a yellow lab mix, with a guess at age to be around 3-4 years old . He clearly loves people including kids . He was not even phased by the cheering and yelling going on around him once the game started. Just completely chilled out. He was completely unreactive to all the other dogs out there, even before he was leashed. He just kept moving on. He was walked on leash all over the park to see if HOPEFULLY his family was there but just letting him run around. Nobody claimed him. We walked over to the maintenance shed to ask the guys there, but he did not belong there. We walked to the different concession stands, but he did not belong there either. It honestly felt like we were in the book Are You My Mother? By his AMAZING temperament, you can tell he has had a family and been a great dog!! He's currently in a foster home with another high energy dog and does great! He likes to romp around, but also is very content being a couch potato. He's got great house-manners too. Please contact us at info@scoutshonor.org if you are interested in adopting this precious guy! You can read all about our adoption process, as well as make a donation for his care, on our website at www.scoutshonor.org.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). REX!!! Rex is a big hunk of love! Rex is about 3 years old and weighs in at about 58lbs. He gets along great with other dogs, even got his leash tangled with a few others and had no issue and just waited patiently to get untangled. This big boy even had a smile… He hasn't had the easiest life, but that's all changing!! He was adopted by what he thought was his family from BARC when he was just a tiny pup. Well, over 2 years later he was dumped by that same family back at BARC with no concern for what would happen to him. Their loss for sure because he's one amazing boy!! He's doing great in his foster home and plays well with his canine foster brother and knows how to read him when he's done playing for the day. Rex also buddies up with the kitties in his foster home! He responds well to verbal commands and is happy to lay quietly at the feet of his foster mom while she works. Rex is a GREAT dog and definitely ready for his forever home! Contact us at info@scoutshonor.org if you are interested in fostering, adopting or sponsoring!

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / White German Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Poor little Perry was picked up by BARC, who in turn contacted Scout's Honor Rescue, who brought her straight to our ER Vet, Vergi. This little baby had been left behind at an abandon property. When she was found she was cuddled on a couch left at the property. Perry had very little fur to keep her warm. Her face was dripping blood from all her wounds. She went straight for a soothing bath and started on pain and anti-itch meds. That was about 11 months ago and you wouldn't recognize our little princess now! She's totally healed and full of love and life! Perry is the sweetest little girl. She has blossomed into an adorable girl. Perry is in a fabulous foster home with other dogs and is thriving. She's also done doggy daycare with about 15 other dogs. She is great with other dogs and loves loves to play. She is also a super cuddle bug! Perry is only about 1 1/2 years old and about 45lbs. She has great house manners and is crate trained too. She would make a great addition to just about any family! If you are interested in adopting sweet Perry , please complete our online application. She's already up to date on vaccinations, spayed and microchipped.

Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Shepherd (short coat). Hi everybody! The nice people who rescued me at SHR want me to tell you about myself. So here it goes! My brother and I were found abandoned in TC Jester park on a hot summer day. We had been tied to workout equipment with no food or water. We were so thirsty. I am not good at telling time, but the people at the park said we had been there for several hours. We were so scared that we had wrapped our leads around the equipment and couldn't lay down without choking ourselves. Then, animal control showed up to take us to the pound- yikes! Luckily, the awesome people at SHR got to the park just in time and told us we would be safe forever. What a relief!! But now that horrible day is in my past and I'm looking forward to my new life in a home of my very own. They say a lady never reveals her true age, but the vet said I am about 3-4 years old. If you ask me, this is the perfect age! I'm not an energetic puppy and have had no accidents at doggy day care (where I live)! They say I seem to be accustomed to life indoors. I am well behaved, calm, low key and love to cuddle. If you let me, I will give sweet and gentle kisses to show you just how much I love you. I want nothing more than to be close to you. I still LOVE to play with my toys. A good game of fetch is always fun! I am a beautiful (if I do say so myself), medium sized love bug. They say I am possibly a cattle dog mix (def have that herding dog style), but I am happy just being me - a one of a kind girl! They say I am very special! I am super sweet girl and I love playing with other dogs. I'm not too keen on the bossy or bonkers ones, but another medium to low key dog I definitely can dig. Little kiddos are not really my thing as they are just too darn unpredictable. My brother has been adopted- I am so happy for him, but my one wish is that I can find a home of my own soon too, or at least a temporary "foster" as they call it so I can get out of boarding. I am spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations- so I am ready to be adopted! Could that be you? You can email my people at info@scoutshonor.org to talk to me, yes me, personally! Come on guys - help me find a foster or forever home!

Posted Breed: Rottweiler (short coat). Meet Rocky, who is approximately a 1-2 year old male Rottweiler weighing 90 lbs. We saw this handsome face and physique on the list of a kill shelter and knew he needed saving. Then when we met this sweet boy and his personality sealed the deal. Right now Rocky is in boarding with our trainers and is doing great, but would love a foster or forever home. If you know Rottweilers, you know his typical traits - eager to please, loves to go on walks and of course great food and some affection to round off a perfect day. Rocky can be picky about his playmates and does well with dogs his size since he likes to play rough. He likes to be the boss. He is not good with cats. He is good with older kids who have been taught to respect dogs, meaning no teasing or sitting on him (but duh, who likes that anyway?). He loves to eat (wait, we already said that). Being so motivated by food makes this boy even more likely to follow rules and learn what it takes to get those yummy treats. Rocky does the rottie lean and will never leave your side if he's getting a rub down. This sweet boy would do great with someone familiar with working breed dogs. If you are interested in fostering or adopting our boy, fill out our application and we will contact you for an introduction. Rocky is chipped, neutered and up-to-date on all vaccines.

Posted Breed: Dalmatian / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please meet sweet Sparkle, the Disney Dog! Sparkle is a retriever/Dalmatian mix, and she is just precious. We call her the Disney Dog because she has the most beautiful eye liner and expressive eyes, which make her look like one of the 101 Dalmatians. Sparkle is such a sweet girl and just loves her people and other dogs. Sparkle is housetrained. She is not a fan of her crate, but she is a good girl when left alone in the house. A lot of times, Sparkle's foster mom will find her waiting by the window when she comes home. When her foster mom is home, Sparkle will nudge the back door when she needs to go potty. Even though Sparkle does not like to be locked up in a crate, she does enjoy sleeping in hers when the door is left open. Many nights, she will go to bed in her foster mom’s bedroom and end up sleeping in her crate in the dining room. Sparkle is also wonderful with kids. She is so gentle around them and even listens to their commands. Sparkle also gets along with her 4-legged foster siblings and LOVES to play with them. She is not a cat person, so no cats or other small animals! Sparkle has a lot of energy when appropriate and LOVES to run. She does have a bit of thunderphobia, but we are working on desensitizing her to that. She would do well in a home with kids and/or other dogs. She likes the activity and loves nothing more than to lie next to you and cuddle. She knows when it's time to play versus when it's time to just hang out in the house and be calm. Sparkle also LOVES (she loves a lot of things!) squeaky toys and enjoys playing with them a lot. She also enjoys a short game of fetch. She will bring the object to you, and if you ask for it, she will let it go. She will do this about 4 or 5 times, and then she just prefers to chew on the toy. So cute. Sparkle knows basic commands and will follow them if she is awarded with treats. She walks great on a leash as well. What a great girl! Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Staffordshire Bull Terrier (short coat). I AM A GOOD BOY!!! I AM!!!! And fortunately for me, the people who know and love me KNOW that I am a good boy too!!! Most of the world does not like a little boy like me. They think that I am scary. But all I want to do is have someone to love, have them love me back, and play and play and play. What is so scary about that??? I am an incredibly happy boy and have been told I am really funny. I absolutely LOVE to give kisses. My kisses are so powerful I can even change your hairdo with them :) I do have more energy than a "couch potato" dog, but that is just because I know how much more fun it is to get out there and run instead of watching someone run on tv. Am I right? Exercise is good for everyone and when you have great muscles like I do, you have to make sure to stay in shape. So I need a home that will help me keep up a good exercise routine, but I am flexible as to what that is. I can go running with you. We can play fetch. I am really good at fetch. Or you could teach me how to run alongside you while you ride a bicycle. Lets just get out there and do something together!!!! I have been staying with the Scout's Honor trainer since she has more room for me to run around, and she also loves me. She has taught me a whole bunch of stuff and helped me with my manners. Sometimes I get so excited I forget to use them, but she will give you tips on how to help me remember them. I hear they are really important and even more so when you are a little pit bull like me. I am about 6 years old now, I have been in rescue for a while which I don't understand. Who does not want a cute, happy, fun loving guy like me around? If you think you and I would be best buds forever go ahead and fill out the application so we can meet. I am looking for both a foster and a forever home. So whichever one you want, I am cool with that. It costs the rescue about $400 a month to keep me in boarding. If you could foster me that would help them tremendously. They will continue to cover all my vet care and other expenses. If you cannot foster me but still want to help me out, you can donate to them. Just click the donate tab at www.scoutshonor.org and indicate that the donation is for my care. These guys have helped me out a lot and never stopped believing in me so I just want to do my part to help out. I could at least ask. I am up to date on vaccines, neutered (ouch!) and microchipped.

I know it's an unusual name, but see, my friend Penny and I were on the run together after having been tied up for ages with not enough food. Penny found safety first, and I hung around the area waiting for my chance. Once the nice rescue volunteers took me in also, they had Penny +1 = Two Pence, or Tuppence! My friends call me Tuppers. I am a very handsome young husky and I love to tell you all about it when I 'talk' in true husky fashion. I still have rope marks around my neck from being tied up alone so long, but I just need some more TLC and good food and my coat will be really pretty again! I am doing great with crate training... I've never had a safe soft bed before or regular meals, so why would I not love it?! I still need practice on the leash, but I'm a very smart guy, and I can't wait to meet you and learn everything you have to teach me! I've learned sit, stay, and to go to my crate already from my foster parents, and I'm working hard to learn my manners. Don't get me wrong, I'm really a sweet boy! I just have lots of energy and have never been in a house or around people who want to pet me before. I'm good with my fellow canines, so long as they don't mind me bossing them around a little and being a silly hyper boy. But please, no cats, they drive me crazy! Small kiddos are another thing I'm not too sure about so I am looking for a home with taller people. The littles just move way too fast and are unpredictable to me. Tuppence needs funds for care and a home or foster ASAP! Fortunately, he is in much better physical shape than his poor friend Penny (the emaciated Rottweiler Scout's Honor took in last week). He will make someone a great, fun companion soon!" Contact us at info@scoutshonor.org right away!

When we first met this baby, it truly knocked the wind out of us. We had seen pictures but thought it was a thin coat of grey and white fur. We were wrong!!! See her playing HERE This little baby, at just about a year old, did not have a piece of fur but did instead have horrible blood stains all over her. The grey and white was her skin, thick like an elephant's. She would not left her head or even walk and you could see nothing of her eyes. Straight to the vet where she was given a bath, some pain meds and started on iv fluids. By the next morning this little girl was sitting up, yawning, and leaning her head into hands willing to scratch away some of the nastiness that had tried to take over her little body. Ellie needs some continued vet care but the most important change has already occurred -she has the will to get through this. Please help us continue to care for this baby girl and teach her about all the great things life has to offer a young, sweet pup.

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Australian Kelpie / Mixed (short coat). Meet Chevy! Chevy is a sweet little guy who had been living on the street all alone until a Scout's Honor volunteer was able to help him. Chevy had been living under a truck for a while (it was a Chevy) while a Scout's Honor volunteer was working to gain his trust. He kept going every day to feed him and give him some attention. The business near where he was let him come onto their property and provided him some shelter. Unfortunately, because there was a busy street nearby, sweet little Chevy got bumped by a few cars when he was out and about and lost a few teeth as a result. Luckily, he did not sustain any significant injuries, and just needed to eat and get a bath. He got a good check-up from our vet and is now at our boarding facility where he has been doing well. Chevy is an awesome dog , loves everyone and loves to play with anyone ! Chevy is a high energy dog, but is also very smart and alert. He needs a lot of exercise and positive reinforcement, but will pick up very quickly on what you are teaching him. He would be a great dog for agility or flyball!! As long as you keep him busy and challenged he will impress you with how well he can learn things. He is a very friendly boy and just wants someone who will give him the attention and structure he wants/needs. He would make a great family dog for an active family with older kiddos. True to his Kelpie breed, Chevy likes to herd and run and play . Check out this VIDEO of him just having a grand time running - look at those turns! Kelpie's are unique problem solvers and will find a way to do whatever he deems necessary . Chevy fits these traits to a T, and anyone who knows and loves the herding breeds would just adore little Chevy!! He's a real catch!! Chevy is up to date on vaccinations, neutered and micro-chipped. Sweet Chevy has been in boarding for months and we really need to find a foster for him while he waits for his forever home! Please consider fostering this little guy, he spent so long on the streets that he needs to feel what a loving home feels like. Our vet guesses that Chevy is young, only about a year old and is an Australian Kelpie/Cattle Dog Mix. Please consider fostering him! Please contact us at info@scoutshonor.org if you are interested in fostering or adopting this precious guy!
