Posted Breed: Boxer / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). My name is Apollo and I am a very energetic 18 month old pit bull mix. I was surrendered to the shelter by my former owner because they couldn’t afford me anymore. I love to go on long walks or runs, and then relaxing around the house getting my belly rubbed. My favorites things include playing fetch and tug in the backyard. I am great with people and kids, housebroken, and doggy door trained. I do get a bit of separation anxiety when my foster parents leave because I have never gotten this much attention before!!!!!. My foster parents are still working on crate training, but it's scary in there and I don't like it much, but I am getting better each day.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Dixie Lab

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Labrador Retriever
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Dallas, TX
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Dixie is a 2 yo female, yellow Lab mix, approx. 50 lbs. UTD on shots. She gets along with other pets (dogs) and people, with a small period of adjustment to her new surroundings. Dixie was ignored before rescue, so she craves interaction/play. Dixie will give you signs when she needs to go out, but, if you ignore her, she will have an accident. We are working on commands, crate training with great progress. . She is smart and affectionate. She is the most loving dog, and will come up to where you are sitting and put her head in your lap. Dixie would fit well in a family with older children and room to run.

      Breed: Pointer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Dallas, TX
Posted Breed: Hound / Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Clark is 1.5 years old and will be 2 in May (we think). He is a hound and pointer mix (best guess). He weighs 70 lbs and is as lanky as they come. He loves tennis balls, toys, and running. This guy is a great big bundle of love. He loves belly rubs and melts when you pet his face and ears. He also enjoys massages after play time. Clark does have some hardware in his left front leg (2 screws and a pin) from an old injury, so he will need rest after playing or running for a long time. While he has built up his stamina, his leg gets a little tired from activity. It will be easy to tell when he gets tired as he will start getting slow while playing fetch, or he will get the ball and just lay down. He is great with other dogs (large and small) and cats. He is also crate trained, housebroken, and knows basic obedience commands. He also knows "drop it" and "not yours", which come in handy when he grabs a toy or other objects he isn't supposed to have. He has been working on his "high five", but he wants to give both paws, making it a "high ten". This is fitting with his personality because he gives his all in everything he does.

      Breed: American Bulldog-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Dallas, TX
Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed (short coat). Gage was rescued from a kill shelter and living with his foster family waiting on his forever home. He is a big marshmallow who loves to cuddle with his humans, but needs to be the only dog in the family and no cats. He is great in the house, housebroken and well behaved. He does require daily exercise, loves long walks/runs, and playing fetch with his favorite Nerf football. He is a very smart boy who wants to please and will do anything for a belly rub! Gage will do best with a dog loving family with older children who are home most of the day or an individual who works from home or in the evenings. He loves being part of the family, adores his humans and wants to be where they are. He can be found quite frequently sprawled out in the middle of the bed snoozing away!

      Breed: Chihuahua
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Dallas, TX
Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Leroy is a male Chihuahua. He has a brown, thin, short coat, weighs about 7 pounds and is one year old. He is very sweet. He was pulled along with his mother and siblings from the Arlington shelter the day they were born. At 8 weeks all of the puppies were diagnosed with mange which made them lose their fur and it took about 7 months to grow all of their hair back. They can be a lively bunch, like to play and bark when around other dogs. On their own they are not such big barkers. Please let us know if you are interested in meeting him.

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Pointer Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Dallas, TX
Posted Breed: Pointer / American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Angel is approximately 3 years old and weighs 50 pounds. She is a very sweet, affectionate girl who loves to snuggle with her people. Angel gets along well with other dogs -- large and small, male and female. She rides nicely in the car and is house-broken and crate-trained. She is quiet and has good house manners. Angel is very interested in chasing squirrels. When she's in hot pursuit of a squirrel, she can climb a 6-foot wood fence. Therefore, Angel will either need a very tall (9-foot) privacy fence or she will need to be leash-walked. No cats for Angel. This sweetheart was a volunteer favorite at the shelter. She will be a wonderful companion for a lucky person or family. If you're interested in meeting Angel, please submit an adoption application, available at www.codysfriendsrescue.com. Thanks!
