If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel / Mixed (medium coat). Cookie is a 5-year old Cocker Spaniel mix and she weighs 23 pounds. She was found as a stray and taken to a high kill shelter. Due to her matted hair they shaved her down. She has irritated skin that will need weekly medicated baths for the time being. She is a shy, quiet girl who is a little unsure right now, but she is coming out of her shell at her foster home. Cookie will need an owner who will have the time, love and patience to let her blossom in her own time. We feel she would do best in a home with older children because the excitement younger children bring might make her uncomfortable. She would do well in a home with another dog with a calm energy. Cookie is crate trained and 90% house trained. If you would like to meet Cookie please visit www.greatpets.org and fill out the adoption applicaiton. If you have any questions you can email info@greatpets.org. Cookie's $200 adoption donation covers her vet exam, spay surgery, vaccinations, fecal, microchip and flea treatment.

      Lovely Lolit...

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Cocker Spaniel
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Mission Viejo, CA
Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (medium coat). Lovely Lolita! Lolita is about 6-7 years old and weighs 17 pounds. She was turned into a high kill shelter by her previous adopter after owning her for 5 years, probably because of her eyesight. Lolita is blind due to Glaucoma. The loss of vision, while unfortunate, does not stop her from being a wonderful and loving companion. She relies on her sense of smell and hearing to navigate. Lolita loves to go for car rides, enjoys walks and especially loves cuddling next to you on the couch. She is house trained and she would be a great companion to a person who is home during the day. She is friendly, playful, affectionate and enjoys playing with a ball. Obviously she will need time to adjust to a new environment, but she gets around quite well and can live normally like any other dog. If you are interested in fostering, or adopting Lolita please fill out the online adoption application at www.greatpets.org and you will be contacted. If you have questions you can email us at info@greatpets.org. Lolita's $150 adoption donation covers her spay surgery, eye exam, flea treatment, fecal, microchip, vet exam and vaccinations
