If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Cocker Spaniel-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Mission Viejo, CA
Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel / Mixed (medium coat). Cookie is a 5-year old Cocker Spaniel mix and she weighs 23 pounds. She was found as a stray and taken to a high kill shelter. Due to her matted hair they shaved her down. She had irritated skin under all that hair, but medicated baths helped and her hair is growing in nicely. She is a shy, quiet girl who loves to be in your lap. Cookie will need an owner who will have the love and patience to let her blossom in her own time. We feel she would do best in a home with older children because the excitement younger children bring might make her uncomfortable. She would do well in a home with another dog with a calm energy. Cookie is crate trained and house trained. If you would like to meet Cookie please visit www.greatpets.org and fill out the adoption applicaiton. If you have any questions you can email info@greatpets.org. Cookie's $200 adoption donation covers her vet exam, spay surgery, vaccinations, fecal, microchip and flea treatment.

      Breed: Poodle (Miniature)-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Mission Viejo, CA
Posted Breed: Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (medium coat). ADULT ONLY HOME! Meet Brooke! A 2 year-old Yorkie/Poodle mix who weighs 8 pounds. She is a bubbly, bouncy, energetic, happy girl. She is a going to need an experienced owner who can teach her some doggie manners. Brooke is a smart girl and learns quickly, but she can be stubborn and likes to get her own way. She gets along with other dogs, but can be dog selective so we feel she would be better as the only dog in the home. She tends to bark when she first meets other dogs so a proper introduction is necessary. Because of Brooke's bossiness we will not adopt her to a home with children under the age of 15. Brooke would do well in a home with a yard. Brooke is house trained and crate trained. Brooke has luxating patellas (trick knee) and will soon be having surgery to correct it. This is a condition where the kneecap slips out of its normal position. It is common in smaller breeds and she was most likely born this way. She will make a full recovery. If you are interested in meeting Brooke, please first fill out the online adoption application at www.greatpets.org. If you have any questions you can email us at info@greatpets.org. Brooke's $200 adoption donation covers her spay surgery, vet exam, vaccinations, flea treatment and microchip.
