We will make every attempt to process all applications within 3 business days of receipt // // Meet Atticus! Atticus is approximately 3 years old & an 80 lb boxer mix. The first few years of Atticus' life was rough. His underbite is adorable but his teeth are a bit worn from chewing on his chain. He is the absolute happiest boy when he is with his people. He cries if he has to go out and appreciates any love and attention he gets. He does NOT like male dogs, but he is quite the ladies man. He has been around children and doesn't seem to notice them much. He loves balls almost too much. Once he has one in his mouth he doesn't want to give it up. He is doing well on his house breaking and LOVES to take a walk. He needs to be out of the sun as much as possible- due to his white coat and sensitive eyes. He had some rough, isolated living before his rescue- so he would love a gentle life with a soft bed and someone to kiss❣ Atticus is neutered, microchipped and current on his vaccinations. His adoption fee is $250. All of our dogs are in private volunteer foster homes, and as such these individuals are most qualified to answer any questions regarding the dog. We do not have a central shelter or kennel locations - you must make a private one-on-one meet and greet appointment with each individual dog at the foster family's convenience. To protect our foster families' privacy, we must have an APPROVED adoption application on file before we release their contact information. All of our dogs are fixed (spayed/neutered) and up to date on shots. We have a 2 week foster-to-adopt period to make sure the dog is a fit for your family. Adoption fees vary from dog-to-dog. Please note that an approved application DOES NOT guarantee that the dog will be placed with you. The final decision rests with our fosters as they know the dogs the best, and please be aware that there may be other applicants interested in the same dog. We continue accepting applications on a dog until the dog is with the new adoptive family in their home. Thank you for visiting our dogs located at www.SecondChanceDogRescue.org

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

He actually looks like he might be mixed with Boston terrier with his white markings. Pippin can be the most affectionate boy ever. He is a true lap dog and will stay there all day if you let him. He follows his foster mom everywhere and will surely do the same for his new owners. He doesn't seem to have interest in cats, although there are no cats in the foster home. He does take a while to warm up to strangers and can be quite protective of his people. He doesn't have a lot of tolerance for kids and quick movements, so a quiet adult household would be best. He's good on a leash and enjoys short walks with lots of stops for sniffing. If you're looking for a sweet couch potato, Pippen is your pup! Our boy Pippin is prone to bladder stone and at his last check they have dissolved, If he gets them again he will need Potassium Citrate to break down the stones. Follow up Urine tests & possible X-rays are needed. He also has Renal (Kidney) insufficiency and will need to remain on a special diet of prescription K/D dog food. Not a big deal, he's TOTALLY worth it! Pippin is neutered, microchipped and current on his vaccinations. His adoption fee is $250. Shortly after coming into our rescue we learned that Cowboy has a severe heart condition. We immediately scheduled him to be checked out by a specialist, only to be told he is not a candidate for surgical repair. We are currently able to control some of the heart problems with 3 medications, which cost approximately $70/month. He was given a life expectancy up to 3 years give or take and is doing quite well. He is approximately 4 years young, weighs about 13 pounds, and is a total love bug. Cowboy is not the most confident dog in the pack, but he loves his furry companions! He gets along well with dogs, and could care less about the cats. He would probably benefit from the company of a confident dog in the house. He bonded very quickly to his foster mom's daughter, and follows her all over the house. He is house trained and has good doggy manners. This boy is looking for his furr-ever family, one where he knows he is going to stay! Won't you give him a place in your heart? He LOVEs rides in the car and going out for walks/runs in the park or at the beach. He is house trained and learning not to pull on the leash. He loves belly rubs and playing with his toys. He does have a little food aggression which is easily corrected with verbal warnings or by not giving him food or treats around other dogs. He is a good obedient boy that is eager to please and would be so happy to find his new family. Giacomo is neutered, current on his vaccinations and microchipped. His adoption fee is $250. *Giacomo has been diagnosed with Arthritis in his Lumbara Sacral area (normal for a dog of his size). He is not needing any surgery and is currently managed by medication. We got him a full blood panel test & it came back great! Giacomo is in great shape and looking for a comfortable home to live out his senior years.
