More About Bulldog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: American Bulldog
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Bulldog (short coat). Heath Bar -- Does anyone in the Athens area recognize this precious boy. He was picked up after following an emergency service vehicle, and brought to the shelter for his own safety and well-being. We call him Heath Bar, for our records, but surely he has a name and an owner who loves him and would love to have him back. He has a very sore right hip, and even though he is in some pain and has found himself in the confusing and frightening environment of the shelter, he has a wonderful attitude. He seems very trusting, very affectionate, and is eager to greet everyone with a happy face and a wagging tail. Heath Bar is a sweet, handsome, lovable big sweetie. Hopefully, his owner will reclaim him, but if he is not reclaimed, he will be in need of a new home. This boy would make a fantastic addition to any home. Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Unknown breed (short coat). CoCo is a beautiful female bulldog mix with a very, very sweet temperament. This absolutely gorgeous girl was surrendered to the shelter by her owner who had sweet CoCo's own best interests in mind. CoCo is only about 10 months of age and is apparently healthy and well mannered. She is an active and energetic big girl, and she loves toys and treats. CoCo appears to be a smart girl and could very likely be a good candidate for training. She is attentive and affectionate, and she is a "leaner". At times, especially when she is on a leash, she will gently lean against your leg in a show of affection. CoCo is a wonderful big girl, and she will make someone a great pet and companion. There is no stray hold on CoCo, so she is ready to go to her new forever home. To fill out an adoption application, go to http://limestonepets.org/website/adoptApp.php?species=Dog

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Unknown breed (short coat). Mandaleigh was left in one of the outside kennels after hours, so she is considered a stray. This beautiful girl is lanky and lean, and very pretty. She has a nice coat of short brown hair, and a very erect and alert posture. Mandaleigh is very timid and shy, and she seems confused or disoriented in the shelter, but she is also curious. She is hesitant to allow contact but that will change with time, especially once she is out of the shelter. It is apparent that she does want to be petted and loved, though, and she will react in kind when she has learned to trust her new master/owner. Mandaleigh is a beauty, and she will almost certainly prove to be a very loving and loyal pet and companion. If she is not reclaimed by her owner, she will be made available for adoption. Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Unknown breed (short coat). Blackie is a sweet black Labrador retriever mix who was turned in to the shelter by her owner. Two of her puppies were turned in with her. Blackie has quite a distinct under-bite with some deformity of her chin. She is about seven years old and appears healthy otherwise, and the deformity doesn't hinder her ability to eat and function normally. Both of her puppies also have an under-bite, but to much less severe degrees. Blackie is very timid amidst the noise and confusing environment of the shelter, but she is gentle and very affectionate once she realizes that she can trust you. Fox Trot

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Spaniel / Mixed (short coat). FoxTrot -- This is FoxTrot, a handsome male border collie mix who was brought to the shelter as one of >40 neglected dogs from a very unfortunate hoarding situation. This sweet boy is terrified in the shelter, as were so many of his companions who were brought in with him. Most of the others have thankfully found either foster homes or permanent adoptive homes, but Fox Trot is still awaiting his first ever real home. He is sad, and frightened, but he is not aggressive. He will allow you to pet him, but his fear prevents him from approaching you. The look in his eyes and his body language show the fear, but they also seem to reflect a real desire to be loved. Fox Trot needs a loving but qualified family, but that family needs to understand that this baby is special, and he needs to be treated with patience, kindness, understanding, compassion.....and lots and lots of love. He is classified as an OTI, so there is no stray hold to delay him To fill out an adoption application, go to http://limestonepets.org/website/adoptApp.php?species=Dog

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Sugg is a sweet, but very frightened big boy who is very disoriented in the shelter and is hesitant to allow contact. He is confused, and he ran a lot when I was with him, but he did stop a couple of times and let me really pet him. He even ran between my legs several times while I was trying to get his photos, so he is not afraid of people, just the environment. He is only about 10 months old, but it is evident that he has not been treated for what appears to be a flea allergy, because he has significant hair loss on his hind quarters. Sugg is very sweet, and he deserves a safe, secure home where he will be loved and cared for. There is no stray hold on this sweet boy. Please come by the shelter and spend some time with him in the yard. He needs to be loved. To fill out an adoption application, go to http://limestonepets.org/website/adoptApp.php?species=Dog

      Penelope

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Penelope was surrendered to the shelter by her owner along with her companion, Charlene, with whom she is very tightly bonded. Penelope and Charlene are terrier mixes, and are fully mature. Both of these girls are absolutely terrified in the shelter, but the owner says they are both very sweet. They cower and try to keep as much distance as possible between them and anyone who approaches them, but they don't appear aggressive as a result of their fear, and when approached cautiously and patiently they will hesitantly submit to being petted. I spent a bit of time with them and was eventually able to pet them. I didn't see any sign of aggression during the time I was with them, but they do need to be approached and cared for very carefully and with patience and understanding, until they adjust to new surroundings. It has to have been very traumatic for them to have been given up by the only family they have ever known. These two girls each have a lot of potential to become loving and loyal pets and companions if they are given the opportunity to overcome their fears. There are precious, sweet, loving souls hiding beneath the fearful appearance and temporary scared behavior of these little girls. For more information regarding Charlene and Penelope, please call the shelter at (256)771-7889. To fill out an adoption application, go to http://limestonepets.org/website/adoptApp.php?species=Dog
