More About Catahoula Leopard Dog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

I don’t mean to brag, but I’m the Queen Bee around this place and don’t let those little dogs tell you otherwise. I was dropped off at the vet’s office after someone found me, pregnant and homeless. Happy to say that my pups all found great homes!! I’m glad to be off of the streets and will shower you with love. I am a good old-fashioned mixed breed but I do have some working dog genes thrown in there. I need to have a home where I can expend some energy but still take a snooze on the couch. I would like to be an only dog so I can get all of the attention that a Queen deserves. Once I find my forever people, I want to stay with them forever. NAME: Dale BREED: Catahoula SEX: male COLOR: White with red AGE: will be 2 years in May 2016 WEIGHT: 65 lbs LOCATED IN: Arcadia Dale is very athletic and needs a family to match. He loves to run, run, run! He also loves to play outdoors and to play with other dogs around his size. Once he has had his work out, Dale wants to be a lap dog when you’re sitting on the couch. Dale is still a little nervous when meeting new people, but warms up quickly. He loves the water, has learned how to swim and knows several hand signal commands He has no peripheral vision at all, but can see approximately 15 to 20 feet. If you approach him from the side, he does not see you. Of course he supposedly can’t hear anything but I have my doubts on that. They are certain tones, especially loud, low tones, that he will respond to . She will be your best buddy once she has had a little time and patience to get used to a new environment and people. Sharon does fine with other dogs her size but is not a fan of larger dogs. She loves to chase cats but wouldn't know what to do if they turned on her. Sharon would prefer a quiet adult home but really just wants somebody to love her!! Sharon came to us after a hunting dog attacked her and crushed her right rear leg resulting in required amputation. Filling out an application from our web site at www.caninecastaways.org is the first step in adopting a new furry family member. NAME: Eddie BREED: Cattle dog mix SEX: male COLOR: Brindle/white AGE: 3 1/2 yrs as of July 2012 WEIGHT: 32 lbs FOSTERED BY: Kerry LOCATED IN: St. Pete NOTES FROM FOSTER FAMILY: Eddie is a 3.5 yr old, 32 lb mixed breed. He definitely has some type of herding breed in him because he likes to nip when he plays and he also enjoys herding his chihuahua foster siblings to their dismay. His foster mom is working with him to become more gentle with the human nip playing. He was taken to Animal Services after being hit by a car and his surgery was sponsored by Animal Network. When his foster mom pulled him from Animal Services, he had already completely healed from his surgery. His positives are that he never meets a stranger. He loves everyone and everything. He is also a great guard dog that will bark when someone is at the door. And he is not an excessive barker. His negatives are that he loves to chew on things. This may be something he will grow out of. To prevent her from continuous shoe replacement shopping, his foster mom keeps him busy with lots of chew toys and bones. Eddie does have a bit of a rough exterior. At 32 lbs he has alot of muscle, but he also has a tendency to be a bit of a fat boy. He is short and stocky. And he is the clumsiest dog you will ever meet. Pictures will NEVER do this little guy justice. He sometimes rolls over on his back while on the couch and will slo...w..ly slide off the couch head first to land in the same spot on his back and he is unfazed. If he jumps up on you, he sometimes doesnt lands, but rather falls over on his side. Keep in mind, this chunky monkey can't jump that high. I mean he barely gets his paws off the ground. Again, recovering unfazed to continue jumping for human attention. He is quite the character and anyone who has met him has a tendency to fall in love with his carefree personality. We do not recommend Eddie for a home that has small children or an elderly couple due to his clumsy behavior and the fact that he is totally oblivious to his size. He is convinced that he only weighs 5lbs. He has been around and lived with cats. Whether he could live with your cat would depend completely on your cat's response to him being in the home. If the cat runs from Eddie he automatically goes into hunt mode. If the cat stands his ground, Eddie will back down and only want to sniff curiously and eventually try to get the cat to play with him. As I said, he has lived with small dogs and his reaction to them is comical. If he gets too close to the small ones, some will fuss at him and even back him up a bit. He just looks at them as if to say, "What did I do?" If one of the more blazen ones tries to play with him, he loves it and has shown great restraint as to not to play too rough. Eddie is definitely a special dog and he deserves a home where he will get lots of love and attention. He loves to lay on the couch next to you as you rub his back and tummy. He also will give you sloppy wet kisses as long as you will allow him to. We recommend a nice sized fenced yard for Eddie to roam and chase squirrels in. However, he is to live inside with his humans. Eddie has been sponsored by Al & Elaine's Legacy. Therefore, he has a very small adoption donation as long as we find the best home for this guy. To find out more about Eddie's adoption process, please contact Kerry Barnes @ (941) 400-7399 or alandelaineslegacy@gmail.com MEDICAL INFO: The following has been or will be done for this dog... - Basic Exam by Veterinarian - Spayed or Neutered - Heartworm Tested - Placed on heartworm preventive - Basic Bloodwork - Urinalysis - Microchipped - Intestinal Parasite Exam and medication - Vaccinations - Placed on Flea preventive ADOPTION DONATION: This adoption donation helps to cover the vet expenses for this dog including heartworm preventive which is dispensed at the initial vet visit and then goes with the dog at adoption. Charlotte NOTES FROM FOSTER FAMILY: Hi, my name is Buttons and I'm a super sweet, poodle mix who loves to cuddle with my person and play with my fur-siblings. My eyesight is almost gone but I learn my way around quickly and do very well by following my fur-siblings or my foster mom's voice. Because of my age and my failing eyesight it would be best if there were no children. I don't really like to be crated but I'm such a gentleman in the house I don't really need to be confmed. I love to go for walks and I'm very good on a leash. Right now I'm living with other small dogs and a couple of kitties and we are all getting along just fine. Even though I'm older I still really love to play so I would like to have a brother or sister to play with. Sometimes I don't know when to stop playing so another calm dog that will politely let me know when it's time to rest would be best. I have 2 medications that I have to take every day. I take one in the morning and I have to wait at least an hour before I can eat and I take the second one in the evening. I am really good about taking my medicine because foster mom puts them in peanut butter and I love that. My medicine costs about $95.00 a month. If you would like to know more about me you can e-mail my foster mom at vmiller3489@gmail.com. Poor little girl wasn€™t only homeless, she was sick and in pain. But with proper treatment, she is now well!! She is also spayed. Cindi is about 15 pounds. She is currently in a foster home with other dogs, but would prefer to be an a €œonly dog. She loves being around people and does no€™t like being left in a room alone without her €œpeople€. She is also living with 3 cats. As long as they ignore her, she i€™s fine. But if they run, she thinks they want to play and chases them! And just wait till you give her a treat. She wi€™ll stand on her hind legs for you without any prompting! She is playful, but not excessively active and very alert. She has not taken well to housebreaking, BUT she currently uses puppy pads consistently. Her forever family may very well be able to train her to a doggy litter box €“ a huge plus in the rainy season! She also does fine in a crate. Cindi does no€™t like loud noises like thunder, but is better than she used to be. (No doubt an effect of living on the street and being careful when outside!) She has been fine around children aged 10 to 15.
