Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog (short coat). Please contact AHS (ahspets@gmail.com) for more information about this pet..URGENT: Acadiana Humane Society adopted out a fully vetted deaf Catahoula puppy last year, that they now want to rehome. We have no room and we are not equipped to handle a 60 pound deaf dog. Moses needs a new foster home, adoptive home, or animal rescue ASAP! Moses was originally rescued from being drowned by his breeder because he is deaf. We had him neutered, and fully vetted. Moses knows sign language. However he is very energetic and needs proper training to focus that energy. Because Moses does not know how to focus his energy, he has developed some nervous habits. He is current on all vaccinations. Is heartworm negative and on ProHart injection. He does eat socks, so has had two surgeries to remove them already. While he is good with kids, he needs someone without kids that will leave socks or other things out that would tempt a bored dog to eat. He would do best in a home with female dogs, rather then male dogs. However, he is fine with male dogs that he meets outside the home. He made a year old on January 28 of this year. He doesn't seem to mind cats, however; he is very territorial when it comes to his toys and his food. It’s caused a few fights in his adoptive home, which is one reason he needs a new home or rescue. He gets along with their female dog, but not their male dog. He is fine with male dogs that he meets outside of his home. He loves ALL people and all animals. He is very playful with kids and other pups; he just doesn’t like sharing his territory with males. He is horrible on a leash. He would need someone to train him to walk on a leash. He has never tried to jump their fence, but their fence is also 6 feet high. He is a digger. He has never dug to try to get out of the fence. We think it is more of a nervous behavior, or boredom. Perhaps is someone could work with Moses and train him, he would put that energy into something more productive. He LOVES mud puddles. We're not sure how he is around water. He has never been taken him to a lake or anything due to the fact that he is deaf and they only leash him when not in a fenced in area. His family hates the thought of giving him up, but his behavior with their older male dog is getting out of hand, and it would be best if he leaves ASAP. Also his nervous behaviors are becoming overwhelming to his family, and they are currently trying to have a baby. He barks a lot for no apparent reason (perhaps boredom or wanting attention?). He will just run in circles barking around the house. His family has tried thunder shirts, rescue remedy, a DAP collar, lots of exercise to wear him out, everything short of drugging him. He needs an understanding and patient home or rescue that can work with him and train him so his energy can be directed into a job that Moses would enjoy. He is a very sweet and gentle boy and has the sweetest disposition. His owners think he would make a great pet for a home with a large, fenced in yard, and an energetic female dog to tire him out. Are there any deaf experienced rescue group that can take him please? We have emailed the ones we are aware of. If you know of any, please send us their contact info., or share this listing with them. We do have his vet records already, and he is current on everything! Thank you! If interested in adopting one of our dogs, please fill out our prescreening application. You can find out more about our adoption process and download our application from our website: http://acadianahumane.org/catblogger/view-our-adoptable-pets/.

More About Catahoula Leopard Dog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

He is up to date on vaccinations, neutered, has recently had his proheart injection and knows basic obedience commands. He loves to cuddle, go on walks (or runs!), and go on car rides. But, what he loves to do most is play! Murphy can play all day! He loves dogs of all sizes and is great with children (although he is a bit jumpy so he does best with preschool age and above). Iggy -Pendin...

      rescue
      Breed: Rat Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier / Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact AHS (ahspets@gmail.com) for more information about this pet. . Iggy is currently on hold pending medical treatment. We are accepting applications on him. Once he is finished his medical care, then he will be available for adoption again. Iggy is a handsome brindle and white dog. His birthday is January 16, 2010. His parents were a Rat Terrier and a Peek-A-Poo (Pekinese/Poodle). Iggy has very soft, wavy hair. Iggy is a small dog, with tall legs like a Rat Terrier. He has the underbite, jaw, and beautiful tail of a Pekinese, and fur like a Poodle mix. Iggy enjoys getting his hair shaved down once a year during the summer months. Iggy was a special needs puppy. Iggy apparently suffered abuse at the hands of his former owner when he was a baby. Because of that, he sometimes becomes frightened at sudden hand movements near his face. It would be best if he goes to a home with no small children to startle him. Once Iggy knows someone loves him, he is very attentive and affectionate with them. Iggy is very intelligent and wants to please. With proper training, love, and patience, Iggy would make someone a wonderful companion. Once he understands what we want, he follows instructions well. But, as an energetic young dog he does get distracted easily. Iggy is very energetic and playful. He loves to run and play. He also enjoys spending time with the people he loves. Iggy is fine with other dogs that he already knows. But, he needs to be properly introduced to new dogs or he won't like them. Iggy also gets along well with cats who like dogs. However, like most dogs, if a cat does not like him and tries to antagonize Iggy, he will bark at them. Iggy has some minor food issues that are easily solved by feeding him in a room or crate by himself. He doesn't like it when other dogs or cats come near his bowl while he is eating. This is another reason we recommend a home with older children who can be taught not to touch Iggy while he is eating. Because of Iggy's issues with food, treats, and other dogs, we can not bring him to adoption events. If you would like an appointment to meet Iggy, please send in your prescreening application first to show you are seriously considering adopting him. If you are approved to adopt, and then we make an appointment for you to meet him, you are not obligated to adopt him. This just helps us to make the adoption process run more smoothly if you do like him and choose to adoption. Thank you for understanding. Iggy is neutered, microchipped, up to date on shots, dewormed, and on heartworm prevention. Iggy's adoption fee is only $100.00, as we reduced his fee since he has been with us for so long. If interested in adopting one of our dogs, please fill out our prescreening application. You can find out more about our adoption process and download our application from our website: http://acadianahumane.org/catblogger/view-our-adoptable-pets/ .

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Spaniel. Please contact Kristy (kristymcshan@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet. . Parker is an approximately 6 year old Spaniel/Terrier mix. He was rescued from the Iberia Parish animal shelter so that he would not be euthanized. Parker probably suffered some abuse at some point as he cowers when petted. But, he does enjoy affection. He loves kids and gets along with other dogs. He thinks he is an alpha at only 24 lbs. He would be best suited in a house with a yard, as he fears leashes. He is house broken. He was heartworm positive when we rescued him. But, he went through heartworm treatment via slow kill method, and he is now heartworm negative. He is neutered, microchipped and current on all his vaccinations. His adoption fee is $75.00. Contact Kristy at kristymcshan@yahoo.com if interested in adopting. .

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact AHS (ahspets@gmail.com) for more information about this pet. . Bran is a very sweet and affectionate 4 old neutered, male dog. He looks like a stocky, miniature Broadhead Black Lab puppy mix. He weighs around 24 lbs. He is very playful and loves to run. He adores humans and just wants to please. If you treat him with respect and work with him to reinforce what you want him to do, he will learn quickly. Thanks to Bran's temporary fosters, he is now trained to sit and wait. Before he spent two weeks with them, he only knew sit but wouldn't stay or wait. Bran is such a good boy who has a heart to learn. He really wants to please humans. He is also now house trained! He really does well with positive dog training, so we would recommend taking him to a dog training class as he would really enjoy it and would do very well. We also learned in his temporary foster home, that very energetic young children startle him. While he loves kids, he would do best in a home with calmer, older children. Bran is back at our shelter now, and is hoping for a new foster home, or an adoptive home. Note: Due to Bran's energetic nature, he needs a lot of outside play time. We do not recommend him for apartment life. Someone with a fenced in back yard would be best. He would probably also enjoy being an only dog. He does get along fine with cats, and most dogs. However, larger dogs tend to intimidate him and he tries to act tough around them. Bran is neutered, heartworm negative and on the Proheart injection, and microchipped. His adoption fee is now reduced to only $75.00, as we reduced his fee again because he has been with our rescue for so long. We can not save more dogs when we are full of dogs that keep getting overlooked for adoption. Bran is in need of either an adoption home, or a foster home. If interested in adopting or fostering Bran, please fill out our prescreening application. You can find out more about our adoption process and download our application from our website: http://acadianahumane.org/catblogger/view-our-adoptable-pets/ If you are with a no-kill rescue we will consider transferring him to your facility so that we can free up space here as we are currently overwhelmed, and to give Bran an opportunity to be adopted since he is being overlooked here in Louisiana. .

      Breed: Australian Shepherd-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Australian Shepherd / Mixed. Please contact AHS (ahspets@gmail.com) for more information about this pet. . Indy is a spayed female dog available for adoption. She is 18 months old, up to date on vaccinations, and current on heartworm prevention. She needs a home with no cats. She is a medium size dog and weighs about 41 pounds. We think she may be an Australian Shepherd or a Collie mix. She's very social. She is affectionate, and likes to lick a lot. She gets along well with the grown ups and teenager in her current home. She hasn't really been around children, so we are not sure how she is with kids. She barks rarely, only when other dogs in the neighborhood bark. She also barked once when she saw a snake. She isn't mean to the other dog in her current home, but likes to assert her dominance. She might do best in a home where she can have a job to keep her busy. Maybe a farm, as she seems to want to herd the other dog in her current home.  Her adoption fee is only $100.00 to a qualified family or individual. If another rescue wants her, there is no fee to transfer her to your rescue. We are willing to send her up North if a home or rescue there wants her. If you are an individual or family member wanting to adopt her, the first step is to fill out our prescreening application and send it in. You can download it from our website, fill it out, save it as a new file, and attach it to an email to send to us. If you are a rescue wanting to have her transferred to your group, please email us from the official email address with the rescue's name, address, phone, information, and website & Facebook urls so we can verify first before a transfer is arranged. http://acadianahumane.org/catblogger/view-our-adoptable-pets/ Our email address is ahspets@gmail.com or info@acadianahumane.org .
