Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). // All dogs are altered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm tested/started on prevention prior to being adopted. ADOPT A SENIOR MONTH ~ MY ADOPTION HAS BEEN REDUCED FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER ONLY Claire is a little Chihuahua that was picked up as a stray and ended up at a pound in April of 2015. Scared and not trusting, the volunteers there worked with her everyday to help her overcome those fears. Claire is still a little iffy when it comes to new people she meets but learns to trust. She apparently had an injury to her eye before being picked up by the dog warden. We applied an ointment 3 times a day and her little scratch has healed but she has the start of a cataract. Claire loves meeting people so taking her with you shopping, etc would make her happy. Just don't leave her in the car by herself. She is tiny so we don't recommend her for a family that has young children not used to being around little ones. Families with children that are older would be best for Claire. Claire's idea home would be with someone that does not have other dogs so that she can be the center of attention. She loves being with her people and cuddling on the couch with them. She lives in her foster home with other dogs and will grump and groan at times but they just ignore her. Although she walks well on a leash she does perfer fenced area to potty in so that she can walk around freely. She is NOT to be trusted out of her area or off her leash. Remember she was a stray so wandered off from someone. A simple exercise pen for pets or toddlers will be perfect for her. NO tie outs. Her back legs are a little wobbly at times but she can run just as fast as any of the other dogs in her foster family.

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Rain is from a terrible hoarding situation. She is a sweet little girl who wants nothing but your love and attention. She is working on her house manners and walking on a leash. She is a wild one, full of energy and would love a family with children that like to play play play. Rain's buddy Summer found a home so now she said it's her turn. She still does not like a leash so we feel a home with a fenced yard would be best for her. Rain gets a little too excited and doesn't come when called so care when doors to the outside are opened. She would be gone in a flash if given the chance. Rain loves to run yet loves to cuddle as well. Rain could be your bed buddy during the cold winter months too.

Bonnie had another vet visit and now on 3 different heart medications twice daily. She will need to continue on these meds for the rest of her life. Vetmedin, Enalapril, and Furosemide. Bonnie has 6 teeth remaining after her dental. She has a grade 5 heart murmur out of a 6 so will be starting on some heart medications. This little sweetie is Bonnie, who along with Clyde, were taken to a shelter to be euthanized since their owner passed and the son didn't want them. Thankfully the shelter didn't feel that way and an awesome angel pulled them from the shelter. Stinky and nails curling under, her angel bathed her and trimmed her nails to help her feel more comfortable before helping transport her to us. Her teeth are horrible and her mouth infected. She is on antibiotics to clear up some of the infection before having her teeth cleaned and some removed. Bonnie could use some more Angels to help her pay for her medical bills since dentals are expensive but very necessary. Bonnie likes snoozing under the couch where its quiet or on a bed by herself. She prefers to be by herself even around her humans

We will be doing blood work on him to see if we can determine what is causing it. Clyde is a sweet boy who loves attention and a soft warm bed. He likes to climb up on the back of the couch to watch what is going on in the house. Clyde would be a great for someone that wants a lap dog or a shadow. His guardian angel took him in and into the vets since his little bum was so matted he could not poop. He was pretty matted and they cleaned him up some but we ended up cutting more hair to make him more comfortable. While he was crated in isolation he barked when he had to go outside. Now he goes to the door but doesn't bark so we have to keep an eye on him to watch for his signals. Gruff has a deep bark for a little guy. He is still learning the routine in his foster home but still seems to be searching for something. He is good with other animals in his foster home and good with kids. He walks really well on a leash and does great in the car. Gruff has a grade 3 out of 6 heart murmur so started on 1.25mg vetmedin twice a day to slow down the progression of heart disease. His teeth weren't too bad when he had his dental. He only lost 1 tooth. He does have one eye that is smaller than the other. Phthisis bulbi of the left eye. Which means it is sunken and he can not see out of it. It could have been from an old eye injury not taken care of or something he was born with. It is not painful but he does get a little discharge around it so we just wipe with a clean wet cloth. Gruff is as sweet as can be and would like his own person to spoil him.

ADOPT A SENIOR MONTH ~ MY ADOPTION HAS BEEN REDUCED FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER ONLY Nelson is back in OH and will be going in on Nov 9th for another dental cleaning probably with extractions again. Poor little guy won't have many teeth left. He could use a sponsor to help pay for his dental. Nelson had his dental yesterday His second since he has been in rescue. Yesterday had to have the remaining teeth removed so he has no teeth now. He's doing well...........friendly, happy and active. He eats very well! His only issue is housebreaking, which he just doesn't seem to understand. He does use pee pads.. It takes him awhile to settle down in a lap for a cuddle and he's a little wary of strangers, but not for long. Sweet little Nelson is a timid boy with so much love to give! He was very matted and underweight when he was rescued, but his fluffy white coat is growing back nicely following his emergency "haircut" and he's starting to put on some much needed weight. Nelson is making friends with the other dogs in his foster home and is very curious about the kitty! He is still nervous about being picked up but sooooo happy when he realizes that is means he's going outside or spendingtime cuddling on a lap! He loves to run around in a fenced yard and is learning to come when he is called, and he is excited about going for walks on a leash but needs to learn some leash manners. A home without small children or big dogs (though older, respectful children and doggie playmates close to his own size would be fine), and he needs to have a securely fenced yard where he can be free to run and play!

Charlotte is a sweet little Rat Terrier mix that would love to be your buddy. She was a stray who ended up in a shelter and not wanted by her family. Charlotte has mammary glad tumors which will be removed Dec 1st. After recovering from that she will be ready for adoption. She is a little unsure of new dogs when she first meets them but fine once she knows they aren't going to hurt her. Charlotte has not been around younger children ( toddler age ) so we are not sure how she would be with them. Charlotte does walk well on a leash but we would not trust her off lead. Remember she was a stray so either wandered off or was dumped somewhere. She is curious of her surroundings and does not listen well when called. Caution with open doors that she does not escape. Due to her size and temperment no tie outs for her. She must have securely fenced area or be walked a few times a day to go potty. An exercise pen would be fine for those without fenced yards.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). // All dogs are altered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm tested/started on prevention prior to being adopted. Jax is a character. Jax is super sweet. LOVES everyone and wants nothing more than to PLAY PLAY PLAY. He is learning "sit" and "down" pretty well. Working on "stay". Jax needs an active person that can keep up with his energy. His back leg appears to be fine now. He does not favor it anymore. The vets that we have talked to said we could amputate or leave his leg how it is. He may develop problems later in his life if we leave it but for now he is doing great just the way he is. He gets along with dogs that are not dominate. He will chase cats if they run but otherwise pretty much leaves them alone. He loves anything squeaky and will try to destuff his toys so we normally watch when he is playing with them. He likes rope toys which are pretty indestructible. He's a puppy though when you think about it and enjoying every minute of his life. Jax is a sweet terrier mix that came from a kill shelter in TX. He was turned in by his family 3 weeks after their other dog attacked him. He had a broken front leg and what appears to be nerve damage to his hind leg. His front leg flops around yet this boy is as happy as can be. He's a baby and wants nothing more than to run and play like any puppy does. His back leg is weak and will slow him down a bit at times. Jax will tire and try hopping around on just two legs. He was recently to the vet who took an xray of his front leg as well as his hind leg to see what was going on. As we all knew too well , his front was broken but not the back one. We had a few options to try. First was to put if back in place and splint it to see if it would grow back since he is so young and his bones are still growing. Second, go in and shave both sides of the bone then hold them together with pins. Third, amputate. We decided for the first option. So the vet put a splint on his leg after she put it back into place while he was under for his neutered. This will stay on for 8 weeks and then we will xray again to see if the bone fused together. If not we will try other options. We would like to thank Kym Ann and Amanda with Triumphant Tails, Inc. Without the two of them helping Jax would have been euthanized at the shelter.

Bella was picked up as a stray and not picked up by her owners. She was full of sores and scabs from her adventures outside. She's been on antibiotics to help clear up an infection and given medicated baths to help clear her skin. Her spine is obvious in her pictures so yes she is getting good healthy meals to put some weight back on her. Bella eats Organix canned and dry mixed twice a day. Bella's back legs are stiff. When she walks that is apparent. She will do a little hop when she runs holding up one of her back legs. Bella takes a daily joint supplement.

ADOPT A SENIOR MONTH ~ MY ADOPTION HAS BEEN REDUCED FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER ONLY Shane is a Powder Puff Chinese Crested. He is one of the 8 that a breeder surrendered to us due to a recent stroke. Can we say SWEET? Oh my this little guy is such a luv bug. He is eager to please. Wants to be with his person and cuddling most of the time. He will be someone's constant shadow if they let him. This little teddy bear wants nothing more than to be as close as he can to his human. He pushes his head into you to be as close as he can. Or he turns his head just slightly and gives you that look that says " please love me" He is crated trained and housetrained if we keep on his schedule. He would do best with someone that will give him constant attention. Although he is debarked he does get a little vocal when his people leave the house. You can read more here. http://stopdevocalizing.weebly.com/about-devocalization.html We are working on leash training. He will not potty while on a leash so a home with a fenced yard is preferred at this time - or someone that is willing to purchase an exercise pen for him to go potty while they work with him on leash training. He is not to be trusted to be off -lead. Shane still frightens easily and will run if spooked and not contained some way. He is afraid of smaller children so his foster home feels he would do best with older children. He will hide when his foster family's grand kids come over as well as any other adults. Not sure? Posted Breed: Shih Tzu / Terrier / Mixed. // All dogs are altered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm tested/started on prevention prior to being adopted. We currently need foster homes for small, medium and large breeds. Yes, we are expanding since there are so many dogs that need a home. Help us help them to safety. So many have a sad story and just need a little love and attention to help them blossom into happy/trusting companions. Won't you help them by providing a temporary home for them? Thinking of adoption but not sure ? What a great way to see if a particular dog is the right fit for you too. The more foster homes we have the more we can all save together. Some need fenced yards while others don't. Some are not good with young children. We will let our foster homes know everything we know about each particular dog prior to them fostering them. All dogs are isolated for a minimum of two weeks so that our foster homes' own pets are not in danger of catching something contagious ( kennel cough, etc ) They are completely vetted prior to coming to your home. We provide heartworm prevention for each foster dog as well as all vet expenses. All we ask is that our foster homes provide lots of love, patience, understanding, a premimum quality food, and a crate for training. Foster homes will also provide monthly updates including pictures to be posted on our web site. Please email for more details if you are interested in fostering. Or call Robin @ 234-571-9014 Or click on the link below to fill out our foster application and one of our volunteers will be in contact with you. http://www.wolfspiritsrescue.com/info/display?PageID=3873
