Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Cookie is about 3-4 years old now and is looking for a quiet home that will give him lots of time to warm up to them. Cookie is a very nervous boy who was pulled from a hoarding situation where he got very little socialization. He is currently fostered with dogs and has done very well with them. He is does like to chase cats so he would not do well in a home with cats. Cookie cannot go to a home with children as they will overwhelm him and it would set him up for failure in his road to recovery. Cookie tends to take better to women than men but has started to come up to his foster mother's brother. Cookie will need a very patient home that will not push him and give him all the time he needs to become comfortable with them. Once he is comfortable he is a sweet boy who will look for some love and attention on his terms. He would love to be adopted with his brother Beau. Please note we do not have a central kennel facility, all of our pets are located in foster homes. The first step in meeting one of our furry friends is to fill out an application on our website at www.rainbowrescues.org. A volunteer will be in contact with you in 1-2 business days to review your application and speak with you about the adoption process.

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Beagle / Basset Hound / Mixed. 9 yr old Female Bassett/Beagle Mix, potty trained, good with some dogs, unknown cats, kids 15 years or older, Dolly is a goofy and noisy beagle girl who loves the sound of her own voice. She looks like a beagle Bassett mix with a long thick body and short ears. Dolly came into us because she was not getting along with the kids in her home. Their running and fast movements caused her a lot of anxiety which was not helping her to settle. Dolly came into us not a big fan of other dogs but quickly settled into a noisy routine with her foster siblings. This girl would do very well in a home with minimal to moderate traffic and kids over 15 or no kids at all. When Dolly bonds to her people she is very affectionate but can be mouthy/nibble when excited. We are working on redirecting this habit but the work will need to continue with her new family. Dolly seems to have the hang of potty training and did ok with the cat she was introduced to but does not live now with a cat. Please no apartments or Condos for Dolly. If you can not appreciate sweet musical hound voices this is not yourPlease note we do not have a central kennel facility, all of our pets are located in foster homes. She returned to us here at the rescue and we are working on providing her more structure and confidence. Delilah would like a home that is quieter with older or no kids coming in and out of the house. She is extremely sweet and needs a confident "leader" who will continue to help her grow and thrive in a new environment. She is coming out of her shell at her foster home but would really like a home where she can have more attention focused on her, preferably with no other dogs or one submissive doggie pal. Please note we do not have a central kennel facility, all of our pets are located in foster homes. Posted Breed: Chow Chow / Boxer / Mixed. Betty 4 year old female chow/boxer mix, potty trained, ok with dogs, kids over 12. Betty is our 4 year old little boxer chow mix. She is just adorable and sweet but can be shy with new people and new situations. Betty loves to play with the other dogs in her household and would prefer to play with the dogs rather than with the humans in her household. Betty is good with dogs with proper introductions and likes calm quiet people as opposed to a loud and boisterous household. Betty needs a home that will be patient with her shyness and aloofness and will accept her for her own unique personality. Betty has mastered the basics of potty training and has done very well when kept to a schedule and is fantastic in a crate. Betty thrives on a routine and would do best in a home that can provide that. Betty seems to prefer women to men and would do well in a house with older children Update! Betty has been making some huge progress! Betty is warming up to people much faster than she did when she first came in and once she knows you, she becomes your shadow! She still takes to women faster than men, but has been making friends with men when given a little time to warm up. Betty is currently fostered with cats and has done well with them. Betty is also fostered with dogs and loves to play! She would love a home that has another dog to play with! Betty will need to go to a home with no children or children over 12 as she is nervous at first and needs a home that will give her a little time to adjust. Betty is potty trained as well as crate trained. If you are willing to give her a little time, she is a complete sweetheart. Please note we do not have a central kennel facility, all of our pets are located in foster homes. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Terrier / Mixed. Anndalina 2 year old female, chi mix. black with white, no kids, okay with some dogs, basics of potty training. Anndalina came to us as an emergency surrender. This poor girl was trying to chew her tail off and needed emergency treatment. We rushed her into our vet and it was determined her tail would need to be amputated to prevent any infection from spreading. This poor nervous girl was whisked into surgery and brought back to one of our foster homes where she is undergoing medical and emotional recovery. Anndalina has had a rough beginning to her life and she will need a patient and understanding home to help her become the dog we know she can be. We would recommend she go to a child free home and a home where her Chihuahua bark will not be a problem. A nice quiet couple or single person would be the ideal place for her as she can become overwhelmed with too many visitors. Once she bonds to her people she is very affectionate but it will take a while for this nervous girl to settle into any new home and she will need to be given time to calm and adjust. Please note we do not have a central kennel facility, all of our pets are located in foster homes. Beau 4 year old, male chihuahua, good with some dogs, no kids, no cats, not potty trained Beau is looking for a home that will give him time to become the sweet boy he is. He came from a bad breeding situation where he had very little socialization and very little exercise. He has been doing very well trusting people and would like a home that will continue that work with trust building and socialization. Beau usually takes to women better than men although he has been working on making friends with his foster's brother. She has been trying to adjust to life with people again and is doing better but still has a long way to go. When we first got Candy in she was not happy with one of the members of her foster home and so she had to move to a different foster. She is doing well at her current foster and is starting to socialize slightly. She is very fearful of new people and will run and hide and bark from afar. If she knows you she will start to socialize with you and will sometimes seek attention. Candy came from an environment where she was not kept in a home situation and that has not helped her already she personality. Candy has also had a golf-ball sized bladder stone removed since she has been with us and is currently on prescription food to prevent this from happening again. This poor pup will need a really special home to step up and become her forever home. Is that home yours? Posted Breed: Border Collie / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed. Freya 2 year old spaniel, shepherd, ;ab mix, female, good with dogs and cats, not potty trained Poor scared Freya. This girl came into us just a petrified little thing with her litter of pups. Her litter of pups are all weaned and finding their own homes and now it is Freya's turn to do the same. She will need an extremely special home. Freya is petrified of new people and new places, and new sounds. She needs an extremely quiet home with another dog in it who will help her build her confidence. Ms. Freya has been improving by small increments at her foster home but she still has a far far way to go. Freya's favorite thing to do is hide in her safe place where she can be away from all of the noise and the bustle of the household. For the first month she was with her foster she would not leave from that spot and had to have her food and water brought to her. She will now leave the spot for feeding time but still will retreat there given the smallest reason. Freya is absolutely petrified of outside. When brought outside she completely shuts down and will not move. She gets to scared to do her potty time outside and ends up holding it until she gets into the house. This poor girl needs a home that will very patiently work through these issues with her and that will understand she will most likely never be the outgoing happy go lucky dog. Are you that special home? Please note we do not have a central kennel facility, all of our pets are located in foster homes.
