Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Baxter has handsome ginger hair and long lean legs. Baxter is a sweet, gentle, submissive little dog -until it comes to his toys. He will snatch a stuffed toy out of the mouths of his doggie friends and run away with it. He is a known hoarder of toys. He wants them ALL!!! He enjoys eating, sunning in the window and sleeping on his human's legs. He has no sense of etiquette and will squeeze into any space he can find to sit touching his human. He loves to give stinky kisses and bark at strange noises. He will put his paw on your leg to let you know that you should be petting him. He is working on potty training. He uses pee pads and has full run of the house. He can usually be found dozing on his human's bed or in the window waiting for the return of said human. He is not the best on a leash but he hasn't had much training. He runs around his big backyard - looking for toys to steal and sticks to chew or occasionally a piece of poop to snack on. If you are looking for a dog who will follow you everywhere and give you kisses and adoring glances, then Baxter is the boy for you. Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Chipin
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Baby
      Location: Delaware, OH
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). Special needs pup extra full with “specials”! Hope’s needs don’t require any medical attention or medication, just care in handling and attentiveness, but she is jam-packed with extra special stuff… Like extra puppy kisses, extra love and lots of extra happiness. This super loving pup wants a forever home with a playful companion animal and attention from her humans. Hope is a special needs Chi/min pin x pup. She has Cerebellar Hypoplasia. Hope's former owner (BYB) said from the minute she opened her eyes she has been shaking. In a nutshell, the cells in Hope's Cerebellum (which regulates the control and coordination of movement) did not mature normally. Hope is a perpetually happy, wiggly-butt of a dog who never fails to put a smile on your face. Her antics keep you laughing, like her penchant for bringing rocks inside the house and toys outside the house. At the end of the day, her foster mom will find 5-10 rocks in the family room that she just carries in and plays paw hockey with. She doesn’t chew them, though, just carries them. Hope was on a raw diet from a young age but we are very happy to report that she has now been transitioned to a dry grain free kibble and she is doing wonderful! She had her follow-up appointment with her neurologist, and got a glowing report. He was very pleased with her progress and has cleared Hope for adoption. She just shakes more than normal, and while she can be uncoordinated, she is 100% puppy and nothing stops her from running and playing. Hope’s neurological disorder limits her ability to jump and do stairs. She should not be in a home that requires usage of more than one or two steps, and any more than that can pose a significant danger to her. She tends to be unstable (because of the shaking) and is not very coordinated, so it would be easy for her to fall while going up or down stairs. She would be good for an apartment because of being potty-pad trained, but does require more exercise and play than a inside-only environment would allow. Her play drive almost requires a companion animal that will play with her. She loves to wrestle and tumble with the other dogs and it is a very frequent occurrence. Hope would do best in a home with no small children, a fenced-in yard and a doggy door. She loves to be outside, and in good weather, spends most of her day outside either napping or playing. Please watch Hope's video's, links below, you will see how much she has progressed since being in foster care. We are all amazed at how well she is doing and so proud of her! Location: Delaware, OH
Posted Breed: Pomeranian (long coat). Pearl was found wandering the streets on Christmas Eve. A volunteer with One By One Animal Advocates took her in, tried to find her owners (with no luck), & worked on nursing her back to health. She has now joined COPR, completed her vetting and she is now looking for her forever home. Pearl is the sweetest most loving little senior girl and deserves a home where she will be the queen of the castle. To know her is to love her, she adores everyone she meets and will lounge quietly in your arms or on your lap all day. Her coat is coming back in so beautifully. :) She doesn't have many teeth left and her cute little tongue hangs out the side of her mouth. Can't help but smile looking at her darling little face!!! Pearl has had a dental, x-rays, bloodwork & is spayed. She has a grade 3 heart murmur, but does not require any medication at this time. Pearl has some sort of rectal nerve damage resulting in difficulty with pottying at times. She is not incontinent, but needs to be wiped or assisted with defecating. We are working on diet changes to help with this issue. Please consider giving Pearl a forever home....she will be forever grateful and so will you! :) Pearl is eligible for our Senior to Senior program - Approved Adopters, Age 65 and older, will receive $100 off adoption fee towards adoption of any dog age 7 & older. Posted Breed: Pomeranian (long coat). Happily at home in his foster home, he’s up with the sun at 6 AM, eager to eat, potty and play with his many toys. Eager and energetic, he gets along with the family dogs and the resident cats, and yet, as active as he is, Archie is also quiet, well mannered (politely waiting his turn while treats are distributed – his favorites are sweet potatoes and frozen banana slices). Archie loves going for car rides and he is a very calm passenger. Archie has a heart condition and takes daily medications. He takes his meds very well with cheese. He loves to play and fetch so one needs to monitor his length of time playing. He does have several play sessions daily. A little shy when he first meets people but warms up quickly Archie does require a fenced yard, he is a runner and should never be trusted off leash. Fond of sitting next to his foster mom on the couch, amiable Archie wants nothing more than to love and be loved. His foster mom describes him as being the "perfect pom" . He does have a condition called Paraphimosis, and needs some assistance at times to get his boy parts adjusted. It's not a major issue but could be uncomfortable for some people. Check out Archie's album on our FB page for more info. & pics: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.828266700575425.1073742120.203914489677319&type=3

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Skid is a Stunning brindle colored Chi x . He was surrendered to COPR because his previous owner had too many dogs and was unable to care for them all. Skid is working on his house training and making great progress. He is very nervous and scared around new people, it just takes him some time to warm up. He was not socialized at all in his previous home. He would do best in a home with another confident, friendly dog. Dogs seem to comfort him which isn't a surprise as his previous owner had a LOT of dogs and he had very little contact with humans. Comments from his foster Mom - Skid came to our family needing time and patience to begin trusting people again. Initially so timid he was afraid to be touched, he has gained confidence and has really starting coming out of his shell. Once he warms up, he is a loyal and affectionate companion that is happy to be curled up next to his person. Skid would love to meet a family that will understand his unique disposition and allow him the time to get comfortable! Breed: Pomimo
      Sex: Male Male

      Location: Delaware, OH
Posted Breed: American Eskimo Dog / Pomeranian / Mixed (long coat). Reed is an absolute dream. Very loving and affectionate. He likes to "suckle" on his toys. While he plays with toys some, he does not like when they are squeaked. He has learned to "fetch", "bring" and "give" (still needs work on the give part sometimes) the small tennis balls. He loves playing with them. He walks well with a harness on. He will want to take off at first (from excitement) but walks very well when coached. He LOVES to ride in the car. He thinks he should drive......of course. He is super smart and loves to be brushed. His pictures make him look like a bigger dog than he is. he is mostly hair. Does require regular brushing but happily complies. He will allow you to trim his nails, grudgingly at times, but does well. He loves his bath only because of the towel dry afterwards. He is not a fan of being blown dry. Reed is a real heart breaker and he enjoys mostly just being where you are. I think he would do well with any other animals. Very fearful of storms and has to take medication for them plus Phenobarbital for seizures. He has not had any since starting his meds. I love this little man and he will be hard to let go but would be a perfect companion for someone with a moderate level of activity. He just wants to be with you. I have never crated Reed so I do not know how he does with a crate. He has never bothered my cats. Just a very happy, loving little man. Check out his album on our FB page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.913783428690418.1073742193.203914489677319&type=3

      Breed: Chiranian
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Delaware, OH
Posted Breed: Pomeranian / Chihuahua / Mixed (medium coat). A home with dog experience is preferred as she does need a adopter who is willing to continue with her training. While Sally has been terribly mistreated, when she trusts, she is a different girl. Always wanting to be with her human. I advise an exercise pen if she needs to be contained while you are away (she will "steal" things off of your coffee table to play with). She has learned to enjoy being brushed. Usually when I am brushing the others, she will line up to get her brushing in. Very playful, but hasn't learned to "play" with me with the toys. She just entertains herself. She has such a sweet side to her, she has just been horribly mistreated and just needs LOVE. Soft correction and an even voice and tempermant when working with her. Her biggest issue is probably in the picking up area. It's not so much the picking up as when you set her down. She will react quickly to protect herself. I don't know what might have caused this, but she doesn't like the being put down part. I have learned to lay her down on her side on the couch, floor, or bed and then she does fine. She will let me hold her and cuddle with her and even lets me sneak a kiss in now and then. She will make someone an awesome girl............she just needs love and patience. Sally has been terribly mistreated and trust has been slow for her. Sally does not like crates but she does well in her exercise pen. I have to lead her in on a leash. Sally has learned to let me bathe her, towel dry her, she waits for her feet to be dried off when she comes in. She has started letting me "clean" her face (eyes) off with a wash rag. She loves her toys though. She didn't seem to know what they were when she first came to me. We haven't got the play together and fetch thing going yet though, but she will entertain herself with the toys. She likes to sleep with me and she loves to be wherever I am. Sadly, it has gotten her stepped on a few times. She will lash out if she feels cornered, so slow and easy is the key to her. For some reason she has a terrible reaction to the word "NO" so I tell her uh-uh instead or use verbal sounds like "mouth clicks" to get her attention. It took her over a month before she would even wag her tail. Now her tail wags constantly. She has learned to trust, but needs soft, patient, verbals from her person. She absolutely LOVES my foster Reed. She is constantly "grooming" him. Cleaning around his eyes and such. Sally is learning so much and has come such a long way with me in a very short amount of time. She just needs someone with patience and a lot of love to show her the way. Another dog would be great so she has a companion and a yard to run in. She runs like the wind and has about caught the squirrels.........they like to tease when she misses, but loves the yard to lay in. She thinks she should drive also, but loves to go with you places. I have taken her to Lowes a few times to get her out and about and she does well. A little cautious about others but friendly to them. While Sally is doing very well with potty training there are still the occasional accidents. If I leave her in her exercise pen, she holds it. 99% of the time she will use the potty pads but once in awhile she "misses". I normally am only gone for about 4 hrs before I come home and let them out to potty. She has done very well with this schedule. If I know I may be gone longer, I will put her in her pen...........much to her displeasure as she likes to be with everyone else, but she manages to hold out or use the pads if left there. Rescued by COPR from a Chicago shelter. Posted Breed: Pomeranian / Mixed (long coat). Clark is happiest when he is on your lap getting belly rubs and giving kisses. Clark is house trained, crate trained and leash trained. He loves everyone he meets and wags his tail constantly. He is a very affectionate dog that loves attention! He is laid back when it comes to other dogs and will even let the other dog in his foster home take toys out of his mouth. He does require an experienced owner that understands Clark's protective nature inside the house when it comes to his favorite human. Clark had a rough life prior to being in his foster home. When he came to the shelter we pulled him from he was heartworm positive, infested with fleas, anemic, and had intestinal worms, bronchitis, and a tick borne disease. While undergoing treatment for all of these issues he spent some time at Medvet for what they thought was pneumonia, but it was later discovered that he had a mass in his chest pushing on one of his lungs. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters he was able to have surgery to have the benign mass removed. Now that he is feeling much better after all of these things have been taken care of, he loves to play with toys and run around. He still coughs some because of a collapsed trachea, but it is rare compared to before when the mass was pushing on his lung. It was recently discovered that Clark has hypothyroidism, which means that his thyroid doesn't produce enough hormones. To keep this in check Clark will need to be on thyroid medicine for his whole life. However, it is very cheap ($4.40 for a month's supply at our vet!). Came to COPR from a shelter in KY where he was picked up as a stray. In foster care in Columbus, OH. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). These BONDED Chihuahua x girls came to COPR all the way from TX! We are requiring a fenced yard for these girls. They are young and highly active, see their videos listed below, they love chasing each other around the yard and keep each other entertained! After they finish playing they enjoy nothing more than curling up on a lap together for a nap. Ebony: around 1 yr. old, 7.8 lbs. Housebroken, she goes outside and uses pee pads, she does require a pee pad down to avoid accidents on carpets or area rugs. Friendly with new people, has basic training, likes toys, goofy, lap pet, playful, rides well in car, intelligent. high exercise needs, good with other dogs, unsure about cats, good with men and women adults. Ebony is high energy and needs space to run (FAST) and play, in her downtime she enjoys snuggling on your lap and is very loyal, she is food driven which helps with her obedience, but she does need to be fed separate from other animals in the home. Ivy: around 4 yrs. old, 10.9 lbs. Housebroken, she goes outside and uses pee pads, she does require a pee pad down to avoid accidents on carpets or area rugs. Shy with new people, has basic training. likes toys, affectionate, playful, does well in car, timid/shy, intelligent, high energy level, high exercise needs, good with other dogs, unsure about cats, good with men and women adults. very sweet and loyal, enjoys snuggling with her people and likes to give lots of kisses, she can be timid in new situations or environments but will warm up quickly with reassurance, she and Ebony have a lot of energy and love to run (FAST), they play together most of the day but when they finally nap they enjoy being on a lap. From their foster mom: They sleep great through the night with no accidents. Will sleep in a crate, but they prefer to snuggle up in bed. Both do well on a leash, and enjoy a walk. Ivy listens much better than Ebony. Especially if there is a squirrel in the yard... I have to physically track down Ebony and pick her up to get her inside. She is quite the hunter..
