Posted Breed: Chihuahua. This little girl has been passed around to multiple homes. No wonder she has trust issues. She is sweet but very shy. Kika is extremely protective and territorial. Once she gets to know you & trusts you she will love for you to hold her & get belly rub. She would do best in a home with no children and only 1-2 people living in the home. If you are interested in Kika, take time to get to know her. Come in often & visit with her to gain her trust. Slow & steady is her game. But Kika is worth it. If she doesn't know you or she's afraid, she may get aggressive out of fear. One of our staff will help you to gain Kika's trust. This little girl really deserves to be loved & shown she doesn't have to fear anything! PLEASE NOTE: We require all interested parties to come to the shelter to meet the pet, complete an adoption application, and interview with our Director. We do not do same day adoptions or ship animals. For additional information on our adoption policies, visiting hours and directions please go to Abandoned Pet Rescue.

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Boston Terrier / Terrier / Mixed. Gosh, I hope someone notices me. I was left in a small shelter in a crate when my owner died. I'm a good dog, I love to be pet & like walks. I do need a little training but very willing to learn. I am dog selective, well, I really like to be in a home by myself, so no cats either please. Sometimes, I can get a little protective of my people. I am afraid of losing my family again, so please give me a lot of attention, love & have patience with me. I'm a medium size boy who would love a forever home of my own. I'll be a good boy & give you lots of kisses! Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Terrier / Mixed. Shannon was a rescue from a "hoarding" situation. She is sweet and gentle, but also she timid and shy. Shannon has improved tremendously since she has been here at the shelter. She can now walk well on leash, responds to people she knows but does need training. Don't judge a book by its cover..Shannon will appear to be a little aggressive inside her run but is completely different outside her run. She would do best with an experienced dog owner that can teach her basic commands or can take her to a group basic training class. She would be best in a home with children over 10 years old. She deserves & dreams of a loving forever home of her own. Please come & meet Shannon (out of her run).
