Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Basset Hound (short coat). Wendy is an adorable hound mix. We are guessing Beagle and Bassett. She has been doing great but can become temperamental when asked to do something she doesn't want to do. She has nipped at a couple of people, not serious break the skin kind of bites, but she did nip at a volunteer during a training class and a previous adopter who asked her to get off her bed. We see many positive traits in Wendy including an eagerness to please but feel it will take just the right home to earn her trust and compliance. If you feel you have that home and do not have small children around, please complete the online application. {s3344code3031/} All animals adopted from ACT are spayed/neutered, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped prior to adoption. A lot has happened since I last wrote,I will try to catch you up. First of all i attended all my classes for good citizenship. The hardest part for me was the stay command as I always wanted to be by my trainer, but the rest was easy, and I loved the snacks. I'm still hanging out with Diana and Patch and we have been going out to the front yard a lot to play with the dogs out there. Marie Wilson came and gave another concert with Tom Austin for Remember Me Tuesday and I got to hang out at that event also. There;s been a lot of activity recently at Act, dogs coming and going and I make sure they know who is in charge out here, heeehhee. I've met a lot of new volunteers who are helping me keep my area clean and just hang out with Diana,Patch and me. Thanks for supporting Act,we couldn't do it without everybodys help. I'm going to go wait for breakfast, I have to get in line before Diana! As always, Love,Cassidy {s3344code3031/} All animals adopted from ACT are spayed/neutered, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped prior to adoption. Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $185. Our Denny's pups were born in a pile of railroad ties behind a local Denny's restaurant. Their mom, Tippy Toes, had become quite a local celebrity frequenting local eateries and getting handouts. She evaded capture for many months. Once the puppies were born local rescue groups stepped up their efforts, knowing how dangerous it was for the puppies. Tippy was finally trapped using the puppies as bait. The whole family is doing wonderfully. The puppies will be available anytime after the 24th of August you can see them on the website: they all start with the name "Denny's" UPDATE 10/4/12: Tippy Toes is adjusting well! While she is still timid, she has become very playful and actually loves attention. She now comes to her foster mom but usually plays hard-to-get for everyone else in the family. Her days surviving on the streets are gone and she's learning to live life as a pampered pooch with sofa privileges. While she needs a little more work with leash training, Tippy is ready for her forever home with someone that is going to be patient in building a lasting relationship. UPDATE 11/4/2014: Tippy has adjusted to human companionship and family life well. While she can still be guarded when meeting new people, she has also shown us that she can build meaningful relationships. With a little patience, training, and love, Tippy will be a perfect fit for the right family. Tippy would enjoy a family with older children (or visiting grandchildren), daily walks or even hikes through the hills (on a leash of course), sofa time, and maybe even a little travel. Tippy gets along well with most dogs, she doesn't mind cats, is crate trained and mostly housetrained {s3344code3031/} All animals adopted from ACT are spayed/neutered, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped prior to adoption. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). This handsome guy is full of love. He joined us at ACT after getting a call two dogs were roaming an abandoned building. As we pulled up to the house we were greeted by Wally, his tail was in full swing as if he already knew us. He immediatly led us to his sister who had multiple gunshot wounds and could no longer walk . We carried both dogs through the broken glass and trash. He looked after his sister until the very end. We made a promise that Wally would never have to live like that again. Despite his past, Wally is still as sweet and playful as they come. He is thriving in our playgroup sessions, and easily adapts to different play styles. He would do well in a home with a female dog or a submissive male. He is welcoming to ALL people and is very eager to please. He knows basic commands and is learning how to walk on a leash without pulling. He loves playing in water and would make an excellent hiking buddy. If you are interested in adopting Wally please fill out an application and/or contact sergio@animalcompassionteam.com UPDATE 7-17-17: Brought Wally home for the weekend. Does very well on car rides, sits calmly in back seat. He was a perfect boy inside the house, followed me around a bit then took a nap while we watched tv. Did great on our walk with 3 other small dogs. Slept quietly in his crate all night. Took him on a hike next morning then a dip in the lake. He loved the water and being outdoors. {s3344code3031/} All animals adopted from ACT are spayed/neutered, given age-appropriate vaccinations, dewormed, and microchipped prior to adoption.
