Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). We do not have a facility to house the dogs in our program. They are all kept in foster homes until they are adopted. Therefore, if you are interested in adopting from CCHS, you have to complete an online application at http://www.collincountyhumanesociety.org/adoption-application.html and we will contact you asap about the status of your application. Spud lived outdoor in a rural shelter with over 200 dogs for the first five years of his life and he received very little human socialization. Even though he did not have much contact with humans, he is making progress although he does prefer women. Spud is about 7-8 years old and weighs 7 lbs. He is a very sweet little guy who loves to sleep in a warm bed and appreciates the soft caress of a gentle hand. He gets along great with other dogs and cats. He is a very quiet, well mannered boy who is crate and potty trained. He would do best in a home with no children to minimize his stress. Spud is current on all vaccines and is heartworm negative. He is shy around humans and his forever home will need to have patience, love and understanding to build trust. He has an enlarge heart and takes inexpensive medications for his condition. He is doing very well. If you would like to meet Spud please fill out an online application at http://legacyhumanesociety.org/adoptfoster/adoption-application/.

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Abby is about 1 year old (9.8lbs), and has lots of spirit! She was found stray, along with my two other fosters. This girl has the most beautiful hazel eyes I've ever seen, and the sweetest little face! She gets along with other dogs, cats and would probably do best in a home with older children. She is crate trained and appears to also be house trained. Unfortunately, she will have to undergo heartworm treatment after her spay surgery. Otherwise, she is definitely the perfect little girl, and will be just fine after treatment! Sweet Abner was turned into the local shelter when his family could no longer care for him:( Understandibly, he was sad and confused. He was also very scared. The shelter staff loved him so they reached out to rescue. And when an LHS foster heard his story, she quickly took him into the foster care program where he now waits for his forever home. Little Abner is very sweet but shy and cautious when meeting new folks . And although he has made great strides while in foster care, he will need a home with lots of patience and love to reassure him that life is good! Abner likes to lay in his bed and watch his foster mom cook:) He also LOVES his toys! He does great with the resident doggies and would likely do well with cats. And given his temperament, he would do best in a home with older kiddos. Abner is about 5 yrs old and weighs 15lbs. He is neutered, micro chipped UTD on vaccines and has now undergone HW treatment. He has resumed regular doggie activities and will need to remain on monthly HW preventative like all other doggies. He is crate trained and has nearly mastered potty training . So if you are interested in giving this sweet deserving soul a home, please fill out an application online. His foster family will be in touch within 24 hrs VIA EMAIL.
