Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Please contact Marta (stautsm@hotmail.com) for more information about this pet. We do not have a facility to house the dogs in our program. They are all kept in foster homes until they are adopted. Therefore, if you are interested in adopting from LHS, please complete an online application at http://legacyhumanesociety.org/adoptfoster/adoption-application/ and we will contact you asap about the status of your application. Spud lived outdoor in a rural shelter with over 200 dogs for the first five years of his life and he received very little human socialization. Even though he did not have much contact with humans, he is making progress although he does prefer women. Spud is about 7-8 years old and weighs 7 lbs. He is a very sweet little guy who loves to sleep in a warm bed and appreciates the soft caress of a gentle hand. He gets along great with other dogs and cats. He is a very quiet, well mannered boy who is crate and potty trained. He would do best in a home with no children to minimize his stress. Spud is current on all vaccines and is heartworm negative. He is shy around humans and his forever home will need to have patience, love and understanding to build trust. He has an enlarge heart and takes inexpensive medications for his condition. He is doing very well. If you would like to meet Spud please fill out an online application at http://legacyhumanesociety.org/adoptfoster/adoption-application/.

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Therefore, if you are interested in adopting from LHS, please complete an online application at http://legacyhumanesociety.org/adoptfoster/adoption-application/ and we will contact you asap about the status of your application. Hello! My name is Jade. I'm a 6-year-old German Shepherd. I weigh about 60 pounds, I'm up-to-date on all my vaccinations, and I've already been spayed and microchipped. I'm full of energy and love to play and go for walks, but once I've tired myself out, I kinda just like to lounge around and chew on my squeaky toys. I can be pretty exciteable, so it would probably be best if I ended up in a home where there aren't any small children I might accidentally knock over. I love people and cats, but I tend to not like other dogs, so I’d do best in a home where I’ll be the only one. I'm house-trained and I'll sit and go into my crate when you tell me to. I'd love to meet you! All you have to do is fill out an adoption application for me here: http://legacyhumanesociety.org/adoptfoster/adoption-application/

Ross was adopted from a local shelter to a family with young kids. The family has determined that while Ross is perfect in almost every other way, he would do best in a home with bigger kiddos as he loves to play and can be too rough for a home with children. He is housebroken and crate trained. Ross went through a two week training course at Man's Best Friend, and the trainers did a good job of getting Ross to understand commands. He understands Sit, Stay, Down, Off, and Leave It. To be sure, he does not always follow the commands on the first try, especially when he is excited, but he does understand what you want him to do and with just a little patience he does what we ask him to do. He is current on his vaccinations, heartworm negative, current on heartworm prevenative, microchipped and neutered. All he needs now is a forever home to call is own will that be you? Meet Smokey... Hello I'm Smokey,, I am approximately a 1 year old Chocolate Lab/Strafford mix that came from the Lancaster Animal Shelter. I love to make my people happy and want to be with them all the time. So much so that if I am left in the back yard too long I will try to find you, even if it means I have to climb a 6 ft wood fence!!!! I get along great with the other dogs at my Foster house and haven't had any problems. They have kids ranging from 12-16 and I love playing with them. Smokey is a great dog he goes into his kennel without any problems and sometimes on his own just to take a nap. He gets along with our other dogs(lab, great Pyrenees and black mouth Cur). He is house broken and has not had any accidents yet. He does great with kids and really just wants to make people happy. He loves people and wants to be close to you. He does not like being alone outside to long without someone around (think he has some abandonment issues). Smokey gets along great with other dogs and children not sure about cats. He does well on a leash and we are working on basic commands. This is my third dog to foster and Smokey is the easiest one so far. I really cant believe he sat in the shelter as long as he did. His personality is way, way more lab. He is gently and for his age calm as can be. Some lucky family is going to get an absolute great dog with Smokey!!
