Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Scooter is a 9-year-old, 10-pound Chihuahua mix. The first piece of feedback we received about him from one of our volunteers was, "Scooter should be called 'HAPPY'." He is exactly that! This adorable little dude has a great personality and loves to go for walks. You'll have a blast following his little wagging tail around your neighborhood as he sniffs everything and makes lots of friends - especially of the small dog variety. He is a graduate of the UnChained program, which matches at risk youth with shelter dogs who can benefit from training to help make them more adoptable. Scooter learned a lot in this program - he knows sit, stay, down, come and can even do a bit of agility! He matches his energy to yours. Since he will want to follow you from room to room, you'll set the pace for Scooter's day. When you leave, he might make a little noise to let you know he's ready for your return. So why not take him with you? He loves riding in the car and wants to be close to you. Even at night... In fact, he'd really like it if you let him not only sleep on the bed, but actually in it. Scooter is a burrower who prefers sleeping halfway down the bed with his head facing toward the foot. Maybe so he can be comforted that you're nearby and not leaving him. Scooter has skin allergies which are alleviated by monthly injections. Scooter came to POMDR after being surrendered to a local shelter when his guardian could no longer care for him.

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Belle Terrie...

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Belle is a 12-year-old, 16-pound Silky Terrier mix. More than anything, she loves cuddling with her person. Since she's blind and can't see your face, she will lovingly lick the air until she makes contact with your chin (at which point you should expect copious kisses). Her personality is precious and incredibly endearing. Since her vision is impaired, meeting new dogs can be a startling experience for her. If they bump into her, or vice versa, she can react in fear and start a scuffle. But sometimes she just sniffs and is on her way. We think the happiest scenario for sweet Belle is one where she is the center of your attention and the only dog in your home. Belle navigates her surroundings with caution but surprising ease and enthusiasm. She enjoys investigating the yard and loves going for walks, especially in wide open spaces where she doesn't bump into things. She's easy to handle and enjoys being picked up. Belle is excited to go for car rides and just loves them. When it's time for her daily eye drops or to take a bath, she's a good little girl. Belle has low vision in one eye and light perception in the other, according to our ophthalmologist. Belle loves being brushed and sits patiently for you, then she runs around the room to show off how pretty she looks. She has the most energy when she's fresh out of the bath! One thing to keep in mind: Ms. Belle is a fan of the culinary arts, so it's probably a good idea to keep food put away when it's not mealtime. Belle spent her previous years as an outdoor dog, being passed around among family members. She was picked up as a stray, and the family made the difficult decision to surrender her to Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter.

      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Cattle Dog / Mixed. Shorty is a 12-year-old, 25-pound Basset Hound mix. Patches is his best friend and she is a 13-year-old, 33-pound Queensland Heeler. Shorty is a mellow guy who is very sweet with all people. He has a charming, calm personality. He gets along well with other dogs and is a well-behaved boy. He loves being petted and will give little kisses to tell you he's happy being around you. Patches is also a wonderful dog and has a quiet, calm demeanor. She is happy to accept scratches behind the ears and will walk up to anyone to say "hi." She is mostly deaf and has mild arthritis in her hips but has a very gentle, loving soul. Patches treats Shorty like her puppy and takes care of him. They tend to stick together and are very bonded. Shorty and Patches are house-trained and walk nicely on the leash, though they won't need long walks to tire them out. We do not know if they have lived with cats before but they are very calm dogs and would probably be fine with feline friends in the household. They are currently outdoor-only dogs and would love an opportunity to come back in the house and be a part of a family again. Shorty and Patches came to POMDR after their guardian passed away and their guardian's family members were unable to care for him.

Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Chihuahua / Mixed. Callie (previously known as "Mancha") is an 11-year-old, 10-pound Miniature Pinscher/Chihuahua mix. She is a little lover and is incredibly easy to handle. Her foster mom describes her as a "funny, sweet, playful little monkey." She most adores snuggling in a dog bed or under a blanket and darts around like a much younger dog. She is still fun and lively, don't let her age fool you! Sweet Callie has a mild heart murmur that doesn't require any treatment. She came to us with a non-functional left eye, which had to be removed. She's good with other dogs of all sizes and would fit in easily to a low- to mid-activity level home. She rides nicely in the car. She walks surprisingly fast on the leash and finds comfort in having a loving person around. Callie walks with a pronounced arch of her lower back. She has been seen by an orthopedic surgeon, and he said she has a chronic intervertebral protrusion. It is not causing her overt pain. She is going to physical therapy (laser and swim therapy) and it definitely helps her feel more spunky. She also takes joint supplements and an anti-inflammatory for pain control. Callie was part of a family before ending up at the shelter. She was brought in as a stray but her previous guardian was unable to pay the necessary fees to get her back and surrendered her instead.

      Breed: Pomeranian-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Pomeranian / Mixed. BB King is a 10-year-old, 14-pound Pomeranian mix. He's a real charmer with a gentle, loving soul and beautiful, kind eyes. There are three things you need to know about BB King: he does a happy dance when you pull out his leash to go on a walk, he loves a good brushing like it's a full-body massage, and feeling the wind in his face while riding in the car is about the best thing ever. He happily greets every new person he meets, sometimes even flopping on his back for a belly rub. BB King has a mellow personality and gets along well with the dogs, cats, bunny, birds and fish at his foster home. Sometimes he wrestles with the dogs and one of the cats, who all seem to understand he's a little older and treat him gently. Otherwise, he's more into cuddling than running around. BB King does have a severe heart murmur and is on several medications. The cost of the medications is about $100 per month. He will also need a veterinary exam and possible x-rays every 4-6 months. Because of the risk associated with putting him under anesthesia, we will not be altering BB King. He has a very gentle, easy-going personality, and we know someone will love him exactly as he is. BB King came to us from the Hollister Animal Shelter. He's just the coolest old guy who's hoping for a wonderful companion for some quiet time, cuddles, brushing, and short walks. He's content to simply be part of your life and know he's loved.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Dachshund / Mixed. Stewart is a 10 pound, 12-year-old Chihuahua/Dachshund mix. He's a mellow old gentleman who enjoys the company of other dogs and people. He can be a little shy when first meeting someone, but is curious and soon wants attention. Stewart enjoys a short, slow walk, politely sniffing dogs that he meets. He's happy to be carried, also. Stewart rarely if ever barks or whines. Stewart does very well in the car. His preferred position is in a passenger's lap. He enjoys looking out the windows too. At home he is calm and quiet and will follow you around both inside and outside when he's not enjoying a nap. He doesn't seem to be interested in toys. He would do great living with other dogs. Stewart is house trained and an overall "easy-keeper." He is a graduate of the UnChained program, which matches at risk youth with shelter dogs who can benefit from training to help make them more adoptable. Stewart came to POMDR from Salinas Animal Services after coming in as a stray.

      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Shepherd / Mixed. Barney is an 8-year-old, 71-pound Labrador/Shepherd/Chow mix. This boy has a simple mission in life: to love and be loved. He's a joyful dog who adores getting attention - and then giving it right back. He has a big smile on his face for everyone he meets. He walks well on a leash and likes to run and play with other dogs his size. Barney gets along famously with his foster brother and sister, Mortis and Layla, and they have great fun hanging out together. Sometimes he gets overly excited around small dogs and cats, but he's generally a gentleman. He hasn't shown interest in toys, but he does very much like bones. Barney is overjoyed to ride in the car. When he goes outside, he immediately runs to the car hoping you're off on an adventure. He loves to stick his nose out the window and smell the air. At home, he likes to stay in the house and keep you company. When you come home from work or running an errand, Barney greets you with little yelps of "you're back! you're back!" joy. Barney had surgery in March 2015 to remove an anal sac tumor and a lymph node. The cancer is now gone, but there's a chance it may return. Barney has been cancer free for a whole year and is happy and healthy so far. Barney is a proud graduate of the UnChained Program, which matches at risk youth with shelter dogs who can benefit from training to help make them more adoptable. Check out his video! Barney came to us from Sammie's Friends Rescue in Grass Valley, where he'd been for nine months. He was passed up for adoption over and over because of his age, but he's still a vital presence with a lot of love to give.

      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed. Dixie is a 23 pound, 11-year-old cuddly Cockapoo. She is a peppy little senior gal that loves attention and really thrives on human contact. She is on the timid side when meeting new people; she takes her time and then slowly warms up to them. Dixie's sight is impaired which may explain her timidity. Dixie is intrigued by cats and would love to have a cat friend in her life if possible. She has lived with dogs, too, and would be fine as an only dog or part of a pack. She hasn't shown interest in toys. When walking on a leash, she doesn't pull, but she wanders in all directions. She never runs unless encouraged to do so. When she gets excited in the house, she does have accidents. This can likely be corrected with training. She whines a little when separated from her foster, but quiets down eventually. Her foster mom says "Dixie loves to take car trips. She doesn't act her age. Minus the cataracts, you wouldn't know she was about 12. She acts younger -- bouncy, and happy!" Dixie has multiple health issues that need ongoing attention. She is on daily eye medication, but only sees the ophthalmologist every six months. She has chronic ear and skin issues and is under the care of a dermatologist. She has environmental allergies and takes daily medication to help keep her skin and ears healthy and needs weekly medicated baths. She also has low thyroid and is on a thyroid medication and needs to have her thyroid levels checked every 4-6 months. She is looking for a devoted adopter who isn't bothered by her special needs. Dixie came to us as a stray from Salinas Animal Services.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Bologna is a 6-year-old, 7-pound Chihuahua. He is super spunky, loves being petted, and does great with every person he meets. When a stranger approaches, he responds with a wagging tail and a big smile. He's basically a social butterfly who gets along with gentle children, other dogs of all sizes, and kitties too - even when said kitties don't like him. (Bologna once lived with a cat who wasn't fond of him, but he never let that get him down.) He is house-trained, crate-trained, and walks great on a leash. He even behaves while you're gone, which means he's a breeze to take care of. When you get home, he's there at the door with a big smile on his little face. Bologna enjoys riding in the car as long as he can look out the window from his favorite perch (right on your lap). Bologna would make a great companion, whether you're a senior who sticks close to home or a young family who's always on the go. He is loyal and affectionate and still has a lot of puppy-like enthusiasm for life. Both of Bologna's guardians passed away recently. A family member gave him to a loving couple who offered to help him find his forever family, and that's how he made his way to POMDR and to you, his second chance.

Posted Breed: Norfolk Terrier / Silky Terrier / Mixed. Jerry is an 8-year-old, 10 pound Norfolk Terrier mix. He is a quiet, gentle dog and gets along fine with other dogs. He doesn't have much experience walking on the leash but is making progress. He calmly tolerates being groomed and treated by the vet staff and is learning to understand that humans are also petting him to show him love. Jerry is looking for the perfect person to show him some kindness and affection and make him part of their "pack." He would love someone patient enough to teach him that the world is a safe place to be! This sweet soul really needs someone who understands that because of his turbulent past, he will never be a terribly outgoing boy and will have to become your friend over time, making gradual progress. He will sometimes approach his foster mama (a display of confidence that has taken time to achieve) and will even lick her hand. He just needs that special someone to be loyal to and trust. Jerry arrived as a stray that was really in need of medical attention and grooming. He is being treated for skin issues that are responding well to medication. He has re-grown a considerable amount of his coat and is now looking very handsome! Jerry came to POMDR from San Jose Animal Services after being picked up as a stray.

      Location: Pacific Grove, CA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. We would like to introduce you to Olivia, an 8-year-old, 7-pound Chihuahua mix. This super-sweet girl was picked as a stray and has a hard life, but her award-winning personality immediately charmed the shelter staff. She is looking for a home that can provide her with the love and care she deserves. Could this be you? Olivia loves to be the center of attention, is very easy to handle, and is great on walks, in spite of having weakness in one of her legs (see below). She reacts well to newcomers, eager to greet both people and dogs. She will check them out, then moves along. She has a tendency to want to be the pack leader with her foster siblings, moving to the front of the pack on walks and also by helping them settle down around the house when the get too rambunctious. Olivia has a medium energy level and does not bark much, except the usual when we get home or the doorbell rings. We don't know yet about her reaction to children or cats. Being very motivated by tasty treats, Olivia should be very easy to teach new things. Olivia loves her crate, and often relaxes there during the day. She stills needs some help with her bathroom habits, occasionally having accidents. With a little work and attention, she should do well since she is both treat-motivated and crate-trained. Besides going for walks, Olivia loves to ride along in the car. Her foster parent says she is most happy as a constant companion, following her around or just settling down together and relaxing. She is especially fond of belly rubs! She doesn't appear to be very interested in toys. Olivia is an overall wonderful companion for that special someone. She has been diagnosed with a unique bone condition common in humans, called osteopenia, which is the result of years of poor nutrition combined with bearing several litters of puppies. In order to support her puppies, Olivia's little body leached the minerals from her bones. We are happy to be able to offer Olivia the healthy diet she needs and deserves now, and is going to undergo treatment that should be able to improve her condition. Olivia came to POMDR from Salinas Animal Shelter.
