Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Hey folks, I’m Orem!! I am a 3 year old Chihuahua mix looking for a place to call home. I was voted “Least Likely to get Adopted Based on Looks Alone” but that’s just a joke between me and my pack. I have quite the sense of humor so it’s all good. I am funny, spunky guy who is learning that life isn’t too scary anymore. My foster mom has diagnosed me with what she calls “insecurity” so I’m taking my time at finding out things are okay here. Because of this so-called insecurity, I am prone to growling at new things but with time, correction, confidence and security, I’m learning that’s not nice and that I shouldn’t do it. I am potty trained and crate trained (though I’ll bark if there’s fun taking place that I’m not involved in). I enjoy going for walks, playing with my toys and also just being lazy on the couch. I’m not a huge fans of cats or kids (again, the insecurity thing I’m working on) so it’s best I go to a home without cats and small children for the time being. I am doing alright with the dogs in the house but I’m not interested in playing with them or cuddling them just yet. I’m currently an introvert that prefers my human. Ultimately, I need a chance. Some dogs are told they are “perfect” and “beautiful”… I don’t get either of things. But, I’m still a good boy!! With some love, patience and leadership I make a great companion. If you’d like to find out for yourself, apply for my adoption today!! Love, Orem. Orem's adoption fee is $150 which includes all his shots, bordotella, rabies, microchip and neuter

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Did you feel your world just shake? Its probably just the shock of how cute this boy is! Meet Earthquake, an 8 yr old male pitbull. While he is a shorter boy, he weighs in at a healthy 83 pounds of stocky love. He is okay with other dogs his size with lower energy levels but would really love to have a human of his own. Earthquake is house broken and kennel trained. Is okay with kids but with his energy level and size would probably be better with older, dog savvy kids. He is not a fan of cats, small dogs or anything else that might be prey-like. Earthquake loves balls and any kind of toy which makes training easy. He walks well on leash and loves to cuddle on the couch. Do to his size and issues with smaller animals Earthquake will need to go to a home who has bully breed experience. If that might be you, please apply today at www.rescuerovers.org

I like to play fetch, I like to take car rides, I like to play with other dogs, I like to do tricks for you and I LOVE to cuddle! Hi there! My name is Sardonyx, and I am a 2 year old pitbull/husky mix. I get along well with other dogs and would be happy to have a sibling to play with! I am good with dogs of all sizes and I have a little bitty foster sister who I play with all day long! I LOVE people! I am good with kids, but maybe not tiny ones because I can get a little exuberant and I would hate to knock someone over! Also, I don't want to brag, but I am SUPER smart. I am house trained and crate trained. I know basic commands like sit and down and I even do some tricks for treats! I can hold a treat on my nose until you tell me it's okay to eat it and I know how to spin and shake, too! I also fetch!!! I would be the perfect companion for an active family that will love me forever, take me lots of places and keep teaching me tricks. If you think I would fit into your family, apply today and let's meet!

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler (medium coat). I am a spunky, outgoing, beautiful tri-color Heeler. I am 4 years old. I don't remember much of my previous life before I was in the shelter. I am so happy to be with a family now, my foster family gives me lots of love and even let's me sit in the couch (special privilege so I'm told). I am so eagar to please, I lay on the ground and want belly rubs. I may be on the short side but I have a long reach and can see what I'm curious about on the table or counter. I am confident and adaptable to my environment. I love to give kisses and stay connected with my humans. As a herding breed, my instinct is to nip. It's not meant to hurt, just to direct. My foster family is trying to help me understand I can invite to play without nipping but it's hard to change instinct. I get along with other dogs and get excited to play. I have not been around cats to know if I like them. I love my human foster siblings. Since I am working on my nipping instinct, best to keep kids to older or dog savvy types. Getting used to the crate is not fun after being at the shelter, so a small treat makes it easier. I'm a good girl once inside. I have had a hard time remembering to go potty outside but I'm smart, so a little practice will get it right. I have learned to use the doggie door so it makes it easier to go outside when I need to. I am looking for a active family that can give me loves, keep me busy (put that herding instinct to good use) and help me stay safe and healthy. If you meet this description contact Rescue Rovers. I'm waiting for you!

I may not be a spring chicken but I do have energy and love to get it out by playing fetch, going for walks & playing with other dogs. My favorite thing is to be with my family! I'm great with kids but do have a happy tail so older kids would best. I can be a couch potato too, for those rainy & snowy days. It makes me sad to be by myself for long periods of time. Due to this I get a little anxious and would love a family that is home more often. I am crate & potty trained. I'm so eager to meet my forever family, I hope it's you!

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Posted Breed: Akbash. AVAILABLE! My name is Isaiah. I have spent the entire 3.5 years of my life living outside as a working dog. I am a very large (100+ lbs) male Akbash. I am looking for my new home, but there are a few things that I must have to be successful. My forever home must have another large dog for me to play with and gain confidence from. I am still somewhat scared of people and it helps if I have an outgoing buddy to show me its ok. I get along with male and female dogs of all sizes, but do want one my size, or close to it, to play with. I am very sensitive and learn easy. My new mom and dad need to be patient with me while I learn that people really are ok. I want to learn. I would probably do best in a quieter home because I'm still nervous about loud and quick movements. My foster mom says I have an 'old soul'. She says that when you look at the scars on my face and into my deep eyes its like looking into that of a much older dog who has learned wisdom through struggles in life. She may be right, but I really do want to move forward and enjoy lots of belly rubs. I'm even starting to get brave enough to play gentle game of tug of war. I also need to have a good sized, well fenced yard. Being in the house is new and foreign to me. I am slowly starting to come in more and more often because I really want to be with those that I love, but I still need to be able to retreat to the outside world where I am more comfortable. I LOVE sleeping on soft dog beds. :) I am doing pretty good on leash and actually enjoy car rides. I'm no where near going into a crate though. When I'm not following my Mom around I like to lay on the porch and watch for her until she comes back out to see me again. Sometimes I get brave and will follow her around the house for a while. I know how to use a dog door and I'm learning to go outside to potty. I showed interest in the cats at first, but with just a few soft no's, I have learned to leave them alone. More than anything I want to please my mom and have her pet me. Even when I don't feel real well, I always get up and wag my tail for my Mom. Someday I want to be confident enough to snuggle, but I'm not there yet. I am recovering from a broken toe, so my current activity level is low, but once recovered I will need long walks to keep me happy and healthy. My Mom keeps telling me she will cry when I leave and wishes she could keep me. I will be sad too, but I have a lot of love to give and a lot of journey still left ahead of me. I want to share that with the perfect family. If you are that family please apply at www.rescuerovers.org Isiah's adoption fee is $150 which includes all shots, bordotella, rabies, microchip, and neuter.
