Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Did you want a hippopotamus for Christmas but only got a doll or toy. Well meet Ocean, a 3 year old Staffordshire Terrier mix female. I call her my little hippo because of her blue coloring, short stocky legs, snorty snores and huge personality. Ocean is house and kennel trained, loves to go for car rides especially if she gets shotgun. Walks well on a head harness but pulls a bit on a normal leash. She has been good with dogs her size or bigger but smaller animals are out. Did I mention she is a big girl? She weighs in at 80 pounds of solid muscle so when she wants to cuddle or lay in your lap, she tends to get her way so little kids, under 5 may not be a great idea but only because she is a big girl. She actually loves kids and would love nothing more than a few of her own to love on forever. If you would like to meet Ocean and see if it is a match made in furry heaven apply today at www.rescuerovers.org today

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Did you feel your world just shake? Its probably just the shock of how cute this boy is! Meet Earthquake, an 8 yr old male pitbull. While he is a shorter boy, he weighs in at a healthy 83 pounds of stocky love. He is okay with other dogs his size with lower energy levels but would really love to have a human of his own. Earthquake is house broken and kennel trained. Is okay with kids but with his energy level and size would probably be better with older, dog savvy kids. He is not a fan of cats, small dogs or anything else that might be prey-like. Earthquake loves balls and any kind of toy which makes training easy. He walks well on leash and loves to cuddle on the couch. Do to his size and issues with smaller animals Earthquake will need to go to a home who has bully breed experience. Posted Breed: Rottweiler (medium coat). Hi, I am Latona! I’m an 8 year old Rottweiler looking for love! A little about me – I’m a little older, which is awesome for you. No potty training, crate training or doggy door training. I know it all already! I’m easy-peasy out of the box! I’m very cuddly. I love it when people love me. It’s pretty much my favorite thing EVER. I love to take walks around the neighborhood and hang out in the yard outside with my family. I’m in great health, I take a little something to keep my joints limber with my breakfast, but that’s it. I am fine with other dogs, but I don’t really want to live with one. I prefer to be the only dog around to pet, it ups the frequency! I do not like cats, so none of them, please. If you are looking for a sweet, mellow companion to watch tv or take walks with apply to meet me today! I can’t wait to find my very own forever family!

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Hi there! I'm Sardonyx, and I am a 17 month old pitbull mix. I was adopted as a baby and was recently returned due to some changes with my family. I am still a puppy and am still learning. I am very large and strong, but I don't realize it. I think I should be a lap dog and I don't really understand this personal space thing they talk about. Due to my size and clumsiness, I would probably be best in a home without small children. I would feel bad if I knocked someone down. I get along well with other dogs, but I think the cat looks like a fun toy. I haven't actually caught up with her yet, but I'm very curious about her. I am house trained and crate trained. I know basic commands and I even do some tricks for treats. I would be the perfect companion for an active family that would get me lots of exercise and some training. If you think I would fit into your family, apply today and let's meet!

Posted Breed: Bulldog / Mastiff / Mixed (short coat). Are you looking for a guy that has soft chocolate brown puppy eyes? Who will listen and hang on ever word you say. Lean on you when you need comfort or just because. Well here I am! My name is Byamba, but please call me B. I'm a 7 year old 70ish pound pointer mix. I'm a fun loving lug of a guy. I adore being around people! Big and small. I'm good with kids but I should probably be around bigger ones so I don't knock anyone over, I'm still pretty active! I'm crate and potty trained. I would love a family who might be home a little more often because I have separation anxiety. Foster mom says it's very manageable though with a few tricks. My dream is to find a family that would give me lots of cuddles, a yard to play fetch in and maybe another big dog sibling. I sure hope that you're my forever family and you find me soon.

This sweet 60lb bulldog mix spent the first 6 years of her life tied up in a backyard and forgotten; she came to Rescue Rovers starved of food and love; but no more! Bodhi has come a long way since then, she is now house and crate trained, gets along with people and dogs big and small and has discovered the joy of warm beds, a full belly, and lots of hugs. It's been fun watching Bodhi learn about life off a chain and now she's ready for her warm forever home. No cats.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Two little lovebirds sitting in a tree….K.I.S.S.I.N.G! These bonded lovebugs are Nacho and Minky. Nacho is a male 2yo Chihuahua and Minky is a female 3yo Chihuahua/Pekignese mix. Their love story began with a rough start. You see, they had a family once that wasn’t the best situation for them as someone there was very mean. Their little hearts were broken. Eventually this family found themselves without a home to live in so Rescue Rovers stepped up and took them far away from all of that. Since coming to their foster home, they have learned what LOVE is and guess what – they love LOVE! They have learned that all people (especially men) are not bad. They have learned that big hands are for loving, tender strokes on their soft fur and that a loud voice might not be because someone is mad at them. Nacho and Minky are both very well behaved pups. They are fully housetrained, do well in a crate (although are so well behaved there is no need to crate them). They both love to go for walks and are great on a leash. They love to go for rides in the car and will sit patiently in the seat until you reach your destination. Both are great with other dogs of all sizes and would do best with dog-savvy kids. Cats are more of a curiosity and they like to bark at them. In their past, they were fed mostly table scraps and people food so they are little finicky but are slowly learning to eat what dogs are supposed to eat. If you are willing to be patient and gentle with these two lovebugs, they will show you a lifetime love and joy. These two so deserve their special “furry-tail ending”. If you would like to help write the next chapter of their love story, please apply now at www.rescuerovers.org . Nacho and Minky have a special bonded-pair Valentines adoption fee for the month of February of $214!

Posted Breed: Jack Russell Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Hi, I am Orem. I am roughly a 3-4 year old JRT/Chihuahua. I have had a very rough go at life but I am finally living life like a happy dog should. Here is a brief history of what I know. I have been in foster care for over a year now. I came from Southern Utah with another dog and he has been adopted. I am happy for him but now it is my time. I was in the shelter so long that I have urine burns on my back legs because they wouldn't take me outside. I didn't understand what love was. I used to be super scared of men, kennels, fences and even love. I am now happy, potty trained, I love my kennel (because it is my protected space), playing with my older dog friends and sleeping in with my human. I am very protective of my human though because of my past. I never want to be abandoned again so that is why they knick named me the stage 5 clinger. I will follow you to the ends of earth. I get intimidated by big dogs and will try to fight them away. I ignore cats but would prefer to be with a single family (preferably a woman). I promise to take care of you! Sorry for my long history but I feel it's important for you to know. Love, Orem
