Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua. Hello, Ayce is my name, and all I really need in life is a steady lap to sit on, and a warm bed to put my blanket. I am a Chihuahua. I am approximately 3 years, old and I weigh about 13 pounds. I am a little heavy right now, so it would be great if you wouldn't mind walking me a little bit. I really do enjoy it! I am doggy door & kennel trained. I am great with other dogs & kids, but would be just fine being the only spoiled pup. I haven't been around cats, but my foster mom thinks I would do just fine with my calm demeanor. If I could choose, I would probably like a quieter home with someone at home to cuddle with. I really am a good boy! Please apply to meet me at www.rescuerovers.org.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Hello, humans! My name is Anivia and I am a 2 year old female pitbull weighing in at a sturdy 50lbs. Given my age, I do still have some energy to burn so I’d love to be able to accompany you when you go out for a jog or play in the yard with some toys. I love my people like there is no tomorrow . I am well-mannered around the house, though I can get excited sometimes and may knock over little children. I am nearly crate trained, though I don’t always love being in there. I’m still learning that it’s a safe place and I"m getting better every day. I enjoy lounging in the sun, swimming and curling up on the couch. At this point, I would do well as the only pet in the family. I’m still learning that most dogs are okay but my defenses are still up. So, while I’m still being socialized and getting practice, it’s best I’m a solo gal. I am potty trained, I walk well on a leash and I know basic commands. If you’re interested in a sweet girl to like me, please apply for my adoption today! Love, Anivia.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Mixed (short coat). Say hello to Brown Betty. This sweet girl is a happy 6 1/2 years young bully breed mixed spayed female. Betty loves to cuddle and spend time with her people, and will search out the older kids in the house to spend time with. She loves to play ball and is getting better at going for walks. She is house and kennel trained as well. We don't have a lot of information about Betty's past but sadly she came to us with some bad facial burns and pretty scared. Her scars are getting much better and while she gets afraid of new situations, she recovers and gets comfortable quickly. Betty likes some more mellow dogs, but the higher energy ones still scare her and she may do better as an only dog. If you want to give this girl a chance at forever with your family, please apply today at www.rescuerovers.org

Posted Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer / German Shepherd Dog / Mixed. Oh hi there! I am Abraham Fordpup (my foster mom says my name comes from this Walking Dead show, but it sounds kinda scary to me), and I’m a 1 ½ year old German Shepherd mix puppy. I say puppy because I still have lots of puppy energy and still need some help remembering my manners (I’m a pro at potty training though). When I am done running around the backyard (or going running with you – I LOVE that!) or chasing the tennis ball, I love to snuggle and be your lap dog (so what if I am 60 lbs?). I can play a little rough and my little doggy foster sister says I’m a little annoying, so I should probably be with other dogs who are a little closer to my size. Foster mom says I can be kinda vocal (but I have stories to tell her!) and I have some anxiety (there are these things called scooters and bikes that really freak me out) but she says if I go to training classes and have a strong leader at home, I can be an awesome dog! Foster mom loves giving me belly rubs so much that I go ahead and let her (don't tell her but I LOVE belly rubs, heehee). Will you be my forever home and help me learn to be the best dog ever? I will love you for always!

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Harmony, a special 2 year old Heeler mix. In the beginning Harmony was terrified of everything! With lots of love and patience Harmony is coming out of her shell! She is still very shy of people and is afraid of loud noises and sudden movements, but she's getting better! Now she allows people to love and pet her, though she is not quite ready to ask for attention on her own yet. She is beginning to realize she is safe and cared for she is ready for the right forever home! Harmony loves to play with her foster brothers and sisters and runs around the yard having fun with them. Harmony is crate trained and house trained and does excellent on a leash. She has had no reaction to cats during introductions. She would do best in a home with a fur brother or sister and no younger kids because of her fearfulness. Posted Breed: Akbash. AVAILABLE! My name is Isaiah. I have spent the entire 3.5 years of my life living outside as a working dog. I am a very large (100+ lbs) male Akbash. I am looking for my new home, but there are a few things that I must have to be successful. My forever home must have another large dog for me to play with and gain confidence from. I am still somewhat scared of people and it helps if I have an outgoing buddy to show me its ok. I get along with male and female dogs of all sizes, but do want one my size, or close to it, to play with. I am very sensitive and learn easy. My new mom and dad need to be patient with me while I learn that people really are ok. I want to learn. I would probably do best in a quieter home because I'm still nervous about loud and quick movements. My foster mom says I have an 'old soul'. She says that when you look at the scars on my face and into my deep eyes its like looking into that of a much older dog who has learned wisdom through struggles in life. She may be right, but I really do want to move forward and enjoy lots of belly rubs. I'm even starting to get brave enough to play gentle game of tug of war. I also need to have a good sized, well fenced yard. Being in the house is new and foreign to me. I am slowly starting to come in more and more often because I really want to be with those that I love, but I still need to be able to retreat to the outside world where I am more comfortable. I LOVE sleeping on soft dog beds. :) I am doing pretty good on leash and actually enjoy car rides. I'm no where near going into a crate though. When I'm not following my Mom around I like to lay on the porch and watch for her until she comes back out to see me again. Sometimes I get brave and will follow her around the house for a while. I know how to use a dog door and I'm learning to go outside to potty. I showed interest in the cats at first, but with just a few soft no's, I have learned to leave them alone. More than anything I want to please my mom and have her pet me. Even when I don't feel real well, I always get up and wag my tail for my Mom. Someday I want to be confident enough to snuggle, but I'm not there yet. I am recovering from a broken toe, so my current activity level is low, but once recovered I will need long walks to keep me happy and healthy. My Mom keeps telling me she will cry when I leave and wishes she could keep me. I will be sad too, but I have a lot of love to give and a lot of journey still left ahead of me. I want to share that with the perfect family. If you are that family please apply at www.rescuerovers.org Isiah's adoption fee is $150 which includes all shots, bordotella, rabies, microchip, and neuter.
