Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). 01/03/16 Herschel does not do well with small children!! 10/14/15 Update! Herschell's foster mom would like for you to know about this special boy. Loves to snuggle, go for walks and especially car rides. His age and cataracts doesn't stop this little man. Hershell is housebroken and crate trained All he wants is love and a forever home. 09/12/15 What is it about senior dogs that warms our hearts??? This little gentleman is Herschel. He is thought to be an 8 to 10 years old Chihuahua. As you can see, Herschel is somewhat vision impaired with his eyes being blue. This can be scary for such a small fellow. He will need time and patience to learn his way around a new home and get familiar with smells and touches of his new person or family. Soft, gentle talking is the way to win Herschel over to help make him feel safe. If someone comes up too quickly on him and attempts to scoop him up without warning, his only defense is to nip. Once Herschel feels safe with his person, he just loves to cuddle and snuggle deep into your chest. Herschel seems to be partial to our male volunteers. He does well with other older, laid back, small dogs. This little sweetie is so deserving of a second chance of having a new home to spend the rest of his golden years, and he promises to ask for too much - a soft bed, good food and a lap to snuggle in. Her adoption fee is $145.00 He is neutered, current on vaccinations, has his annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. Adoptions are held at the O'Fallon, IL PetSmart every Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm and at the Glen Carbon, IL PetSmart every Sunday and the first Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm. We are also at Petco in Edwardsville Crossing on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of the month from 11:30-3:30 pm. The cats are only at Glen Carbon. Please let us know if you are interested in a pet and we can arrange to have them meet you at one of the adoption events.

Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). 06/24/15 Yet another member of the Heartworm Heartthrob club, this little compact, blocky headed sweetheart is Tallie. Thought to be 4 yrs old, Tallie is a Pit mix with a maybe a splash of Border Collie. Whatever mix she is, Tallie is a gem. She has come a long way in a short time from the scared, sad girl that first walked through our doors. It takes her about 5 minutes to warm up and Tallie just want to be your best friend. She is so loving, all she wants to do is crawl into your lap and give and get kisses. We haven't had a lot of opportunities to see how she is with other dogs due to her heartworms, however she can come across as dominate, but wags her tail the whole time. The last walk she went on with another male dog went pretty well and we are confident that with proper introductions Tallie could get along with another male dog in the home. Tallie will need some time and patients to be allowed to learn what is expected of her and to know she is safe. Her adoption fee is $145.00 She is spayed, current on vaccinations, has her annual rabies vaccination and micro-chipped. . If you are interested in adopting please go to www.partnersforpetsil.org and fill out an online application. Adoptions are held at the O'Fallon, IL PetSmart every Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm and at the Glen Carbon, IL PetSmart every Sunday and the first Saturday of the month from 11am-3:30pm. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Came in w/ 3 pups Hi I'm Miley. I do not have a tragic tale of unfortunate beginnings like some of my kennel mates do. I was just stray. Well not just a stray, I was a mom dog with my three precious babies, sitting in the pound. A lady from Partners came and saved my babies and took me too. Oh how grateful I was that my babies were going to live. I was even more grateful to hear that all three were adopted into loving homes. I was so hopefully that soon it would be my turn to find a forever home where I be loved and cherished too....but here I sit. You see, I have what you'd call "stranger danger" issues. New people can be kind of scary for me. I do much better with women and warm up faster to them, but men take me a little longer. I have gotten much better over the years, but the issue is sometimes still there. I do just great with the male care givers at the shelter that I've grown to love and trust. I love to roll over for tummy rubs and play with other male dogs. There is a volunteer that comes a few times a week to walk me and it took me 5 minutes to fall in love with her. I wish there was someone out there who would take a chance on me and be willing to help me work through my fear. I'm really a fun loving girl who loves play, snuggle and give lots of kisses. I am spayed, current on vaccinations, has her annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. Location: USA
Posted Breed: Manchester Terrier / Mixed (short coat). 11/05/15 Update! Snickers, My precious old boy. He beats to his own drum. Very laid back, stays away from trouble. He would love being and only pup, or just one other older, preferably a female. He can be shy at first, but given time he warms up and loves his people. He is house, crate and car trained. He loves car rides, jumps right in and out of the car. He has his favorite bed, doesn't let anyone else use it, and that comes with him. He's been around kids and just ignores them for the most part, but probably not good around children under 2! 10/14/15 I always like to update Snickers, this is him in his bed in his foster home. This is his favorite place to relax!! Sweet boy! 01/07/2015 Snickers is doing great in his foster home. He is not fond of the larger high-energy dog in the home, but does well with the other laid back dogs. He would love to be an only dog as he loves to be loved on and curl up in your lap once he trusts you. We do believe he was abused in the past as he is very wary at first where your touch him until he gets to know and trust you especially around his neck where it appears he had an imbedded collar or some trauma to his neck at some point. He now allows his foster mom to touch and love on him anywhere and give him kisses on the face. He does a happy dance when he's excited and has begun to play with toys when the other high energy dog is not around. He is house broke but will mark to let the other dog he doesn't care for to stay away. This has diminished greatly with correction and the help of "no mark" spray. We believe being an only dog or with very laid back dogs he will not do this. We believe that he may only be about 8 years old. He has had a hard life so it is not easy to tell. He is very laid back and would make someone a great low maintenance dog. He does not require to go outside often and will hold it if it rains. He does not like the cold or the rain. He will go out if instructed. Please give this poor boy a home. He will make someone a loving companion who is loving to him. 10/27/14 Snickers with Sarah!! He loves this young lady!! 07/06/14 Sue wanted to update Snickers pictures, he has came a long way since he first came to partners. He is a sweet boy who wants to hang out with the volunteers and staff. He is a quiet boy and minds his own business. He just needs someone to give him the love he deserves. Older dogs make great companions. Won't you give Snickers a second chance? 12/29/13: This is Snickers he came to Partners For Pets a very scared boy. He's doing much better now and attended adoptions today. He is a handsome guy but will take some patience from someone to understand. He can be very fearful at first. Snicker's adoption fee is $145.00. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm neg, has his annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. If you are interested in adopting, go to www.partnersforpetsil.org and fill out an online application. Posted Breed: Lhasa Apso / Mixed (long coat). 11/05/15 Update!! Honey, This guy is my shadow. He is really a lover boy, if he feels your unconditional love for him. He is very smart. He has a history that only he knows, so he needs love despite this. He would benefit my being with just one other dog, or an only dog. He doesn't need crated if you have a dog door. Car, house and crate trained, but prefers the bathroom with a gate. He has been around children and my grandchildren love him and he them, but all kids are different. He will be at your feet, or on your lap, depending on what you are doing.' Will act for treats. I am my foster moms shadow. I follow her everywhere. I do not like to be crated and would prefer a home where someone is around most of the time. I need someone with confidence to make me feel secure. 01/28/14 Shoney is doing well in his foster home with Dawn and the pack. He has been tested with cats and is doing well. He did good with the grandchildren. More to come on Shoney's adventure with his new foster family. 04/07/13 Shoney is really a sweet and loving boy, he wants nothing more then to be with his people. He really just wants to hang out with you, but he does have some times when he gets a little freaked out and gets a little snappy. He would not do well in a house with not a lot of action going on. We would be glad to do a trial with Shoney as he does not show well at adoption events. He deserves to have a forever home. Shoney would not do well with children, he can be a nippy boy. 12/06/12 Shoney aka Honey is a male not a female, so we had to change his name. :) 11/09/12 Honey is a Lhasa Apso mix. He was rescued from Clinton County Animal Control. He is a cute boy. He gets along well with the shelter dogs, is crate trained and walks well on a leash. He is looking for her forever home. He is neutered, current on vaccinations, heartworm negative, has his annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. The adoption fee is $145.00. He is very smart, The people in his forever home, need to be dominant. He has been to obedience school and knows his stuff. with a few walks a day, he will be great to listen. He follows direction and correction. He would be a better only dog, or with and older female. (Females are all hes been around on the older side) He respects them. He would make a good jogging buddy. Needs a yard to run in. He is crate and house trained. Markus would be great with older children, he does not do well with small children. 05/08/15 Update from Markus's Foster Mom. I have calmed down but I still like to play. I listen so much better since I have calmed down. If I were an only pup you would get my undivided attention. I am still a kid at heart and smart to boot. If I am left on my own to think I get distracted. I need a strong but loving person to be my best friend. I love to jog and won't poop out on you but when we get home I will take a long nap. 12/23/14 Hello, I am Markus, I have been told that I am very smart. My foster mom and dad say so, an so does, my obedience teacher, at La Best. I graduated!!!!!!! That was rough. They made me listen for 2 hours straight. I can still make my mind wonder and have energetic streaks, if not on command, but hey, I'm a young boy. My wish is to get a preteen (10 or older) for Christmas. I have been tried out with young kids and I am to springy for them. I need people around me that will stand firm. If I could be an only furbaby, I would be calmer. (If my playmate is young and energetic, I will be too.) I could be with an older dog, but that depends on personalities. 11/22/14 Update: Markus has completed his puppy training classes, here he is with his certificate!! 08/09/14 Another picture of Marcus and his foster friend Bindy!! 07/13/14: Markus would do best with pre-teen or older children. 05/03/14: Markus is doing great in his foster home. From his foster family: "He is around 5 other dogs, and that is an accomplishment in itself to behave. He knows who is who and is minding his manners. He is on a grain free food, which helps a lot. We also have a calm down treat for when he is going out, because he does get excited and wants to run. He uses a dog door that leads to a run and a good sized fenced in back yard. He is doing well, and letting loose of some of the energy. As I am here sending this out, he is sleeping in a recliner. He loves truck rides, and follows me all over the house. I havent had him chew on anything but bones and he loves to play with ropes. He will chase a ball, but wont bring it back. Crate trained, although he will cry at first when put in there. he has a bed in the crate and hasn't tore it up yet. He is food aggressive, but many dogs are, They just have to be fed separately, (in the crate), and all is fine. Possessive with soup bones. House trained also, and hasn't learned to raise the leg yet, lol! If another dog is in the picture they probably need to be younger or close to his age, (3). My older dogs don't care much for his youthfulness. 05/23/14: Markus is being returned due to no fault of his own. 01/19/14 Markus was adopted Sunday at the Glen Carbon Petsmart. 01/02/14 Markus is guessed to be a 2-3 year old, lab/terrier mix. He was rescued from Madison County Animal Control. They were owner turn ins. Markus is a sweet boy, although he likes to protect his food. He listens well but needs more manners. He does like to play rough! He will need some obedience training to help him calm down and learn how to play. Markus is neutered, current on vaccinations, heatwormn neg, has his annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. His adoption fee is $145.00. Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Cattle Dog / Mixed (short coat). 10/04/14 Serta is guessed to be a 2-3 year old, cattle dog mix. Serta is a sweet and loving young lady. Serta was found June 10 with a horribly embedded rope around her neck and severely emaciated. She was taken to Horseshoe Animal Hospital where the rope was removed. For awhile there, she had lost her vision too. But through all her treatments and bandage changes, with people she didn't even know, she was wonderful! Always happy, tail wagging, and giving kisses. As if that wasn't enough, the poor girl had to endure heartworm treatment also. Once again, she came through like a champ. Now Serta is ready to know what it's like to have a real home with lots of love. She knows some basic commands like "sit", "down", "shake", and "stay" and she walks well on a leash. Serta would be best as an only dog and in a home with no children. Her adoption fee is $145.00. She is spayed, current on vaccinations, heartworm neg, has her annual rabies vaccination, dewormed and micro-chipped. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ADOPTING, GO TO OUR WEBSITE AT www.partnersforpetsil.org to fill out an online adoption application. Please visit our adoptable pets at PetSmart in O'Fallon, IL every Saturday or the Glen Carbon, IL PetSmart the 1st Saturday of the month and every Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. If there is a dog in particular you would like to meet at PetSmart, be sure to email and inquire whether that dog will be at that particular PetSmart that day.
