Chihuahua

Overview: The Chihuahua is a tiny bundle of joy. Kids love him ' and for good reason. This breed seems always excited about something. They do best as an indoor dog, but they love to scamper around in the yard ' in suitable weather.
Breed Group: Toy
Weight (lbs): 6
Height (in): 6-9
Colors: Any.
Coat: Smooth with soft, glossy hair or long with soft straight or wavy coat and fringed ears.
Character: Chihuahuas are very intelligent little dogs that are much more brave than their small size suggests. They often bond with only one person.
Temperament: This breed usually lives with other dogs and cats very easily. Children should be taught how to play with this small dog as many try to treat it as a toy.
Care: The Chihuahua requires occasional grooming with a brush and comb. Trim claws and check teeth on a regular basis. Care of the long coat entails brushing 2 to 3 times a week.
Training: This breed is eager to learn, so don't let the small size deter you from properly training him.
Activity: Chihuahuas can typically get sufficient exercise by playing indoors.
Country of Origin: Mexico
Health Issue: This breed has a short nose and large eyes, which can cause some problems (e.g., wheezing, dry eye, glaucoma). They are prone to slipped stifle, gum problems, colds, stress, and rheumatism.
Life Expectancy: about 15 or more

More About Chihuahua Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Wilmington, DE
Posted Breed: Shar Pei / Pug / Mixed (short coat). My name is Zena and my two most favorite things to do are smile and wag my tail…followed closely by being with my human. I am an amazingly cute pug and shar pei mix **don't even ask**. I am between 2 to 3 years old and I simply ADORE all people. I enjoy walks and even jogging with my foster mom. I am fully vetted, crate trained and…wait for it…house trained. Did i mention i smile all time? I AM GREAT WITH KIDS! Sorry for shouting but folks think this is important. I simply just love to be with my people. In the interest of full disclosure, I need to be an only dog…which brings me back to early socialization. I would love to explain, what, in my history, caused this quirk but I cannot. I am not a fan of other dogs or even kitties. My foster mom thinks it’s because i was never properly socialized…but I am a work in progress….and I am correctable in public…I am just not ready to co exist with another dog or kitty. My foster mom would love the opportunity to sing my praises..except she can’t sing. I believe my forever family is looking for me as I wait patiently for them. Give me a chance…I won’t disappoint.

Posted Breed: Beagle (short coat). Hi! Thanks for stopping by. My name is Diesel and I am going to tell you a bit about myself. I was found in rural WV, stashed away in an outside cage. I had very little interaction with people. My owner didn't want my siblings and me anymore and we were kinda just forgotten about. Well, some kind ladies caught wind of what was going on and they sprung into action. They pulled all of us out of our dirty, cold and meager existence and brought us to a vet office to be examined and cared for. Well, I am now in a foster home and am slowly settling into living life as an inside pup. I'm eating good food, learning my manners, and building my confidence daily. I am approximately 4 years old, neutered, up-to-date on shots, wormed, on flea/tick and heartworm preventatives, shy and learning to live in a house. I am crate trained and working on my potty training. If you would like to have me join your family, please go to www.allmuttsmatter.org and fill out an adoption application. Thanks so much for reading about me and I hope to hear from you soon. Luv, Diesel. Diesel seems to have been mistreated by a man. He flourishes in the presence of women. Diesel needs a home without men. .

But, I'm in a wonderful foster home now while lookin' for my furever family. I am about 4 years old and am blind in one eye. But, don't let me fool you! I'm always on the move and see just fine out of my good eye! I am up-o-date on vaccinations & heartworm prevention and have been wormed, spayed, and michrochipped. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Chihuahua (short coat). Oy Chihuahua!! That's me, Buddy! I am an excellent companion dog, only about 7 years old and the most loveable, sweetest little fellow you'll ever meet! Part of my irresistible cuteness is that sometimes my tongue hangs out because I'm missing a few teeth! I'm seeking a wonderful home where I can share all of this love! I have a heart murmur that requires me to take a daily pill (which only costs $20/month). I can't be neutered because of my heart murmur, so therefore I pee on things. I'm also crate and house trained, up to date on my shots and I get along with other dogs and cats. If you are looking for a gentle, little lap dog then please fill out my adoption application and one of the kind folks here at AMMF will be in touch soon! Our adoption process is below: 1. Submit an application and it will be processed, evaluated and we will contact the vet and personal references; 2. All other applications that have been submitted on Buddy will also be processed (best suited applicant is chosen, not first come first serve); 3. Schedule a home visit; and 4. Adoption is finalized when the best-fitting home is found for Buddy. If you have young children and/or other pets and everyone gets along, Buddy will be able to stay at your home and do a foster to adopt for about a two-week trial period. If all is going well after the trial period, the adoption will then be finalized. Our adoption fee for Buddy is $150.00.

Posted Breed: Dutch Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Hi all Noah here! I have had some life. My foster mom had her hands full when I first came to her from our friends in Virginia. I was in a high kill shelter and was at the end of my time. AMMF and Miss Kathryn got with the shelter and saved me. I had a real long ride with my friend Hunter and his dad David from Virginia to Delaware. They thought I had a broken jaw because I was not eating. As it turned out my jaw thankfully was not broken but I was really sick. My foster mom found all I would eat was cooked chicken or pot roast so that is what she fed me for a few weeks or maybe longer. Then I started eating canned food for awhile now I eat dry food too. I have gained about 15 pounds. My foster mom says I am just so handsome. I do need to take a few medicines for my heart but I am doing awesome. I am house trained I do not need a crate as I do not get into or chew anything up. I sometimes get excited when I see foster mom and I run to her wagging my tail. I am really a happy guy and am fun to have around. If I really like you in time I will give you some kisses. If you would like to bring me into your family please go to allmuttsmatter.org and fill out an application. Love Noah!!

      Mooch - FOST...

      rescue
      Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Wilmington, DE
Posted Breed: Hound / American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). We were brought up and taught by our parents to honor elderly people. We were taught to respect them and learn from all of their life experiences. We were also taught to take care of our elderly when they are in need and never abandon them. As animal lovers, we are to love, care for and respect our pets for their entire lives too. Tragically and too often, the elderly are abandoned during their most vulnerable time of need and this is what happened to Mooch, through no fault of her own. Mooch lived with the same family for 10 years where she gave them her all of her love, affection and devotion. What did she get in return when she needed them most, nothing but thrown away as if she didn’t matter, into a scary, noisy and cold shelter where she had very little chance of making it out alive and was banished to live her remaining days frightened and alone. This is absolutely not the proper thing to do. After all Mooch has been through, she has plenty of giddy up in her step and tons of love and affection to give. Mooch is a lady who wants you all to herself. She cannot live with other furry animals. She’s house trained, healthy, spayed, up-to-date on her shots and wormed. Mooch is exceptionally affectionate with people and she still wants to live. Mooch stayed with a professional trainer for two weeks and she had nothing but wonderful things to say about Mooch and it is also her professional opinion that Mooch remain an only child. Because All Mutts Matter is a foster-based rescue and all of the foster homes have other pets, Mooch is staying at a very lovely boarding facility in PA and the folks there are taking great care of her. This elderly gal really deserves a loving family who will appreciate Mooch and we promise that she will give you her all. Please, find it in your heart to consider fostering and/or adopting Mooch and we promise you will gain the best companion ever. If you are interested in having Mooch join you, please go to www.allmuttsmatter.org and fill out either a foster or adoption application which are located under the ‘Adoption Info’ tab on the left. Thank you so much for reading Mooch’s story and we pray we hear from you soon. at www.allmuttsmatter.org . Below is our adoption process. 1. The application will be processed, evaluated and we will contact the vet and personal references; 2. All other applications that have been submitted on Mooch will also be processed (best suited applicant is chosen, not first come first serve); 3. Schedule a home visit; and 4. Adoption finalized when the best-fitting home is found. Our adoption fee for Mooch is $150 .00.
