Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Dawson came to APA! under weight, a little banged up, and kind of freaked out by life. But once he was shown a little kindness and stability in foster, he slowly opened up to show us the kind of dog he can be. And he can be pretty great. Dawson assumes the worst. He can be very skittish and reactive to loud noises and sudden movements, and he can be tense in new situations. But if you approach him calmly and patiently, he will soon accept your olive branch. And then you've got a friend for life. As he has gotten more comfortable, he has gotten a bit more bouncy and cheerful. In fact, he's been caught having some full-blown fun, and was only a little embarrassed about it. We think Dawson would do best as a single pet in an adults-only home. In a quiet home, he is very well-behaved and low-maintenance. He just kind of cruises along, doing his thing. But he can get very tightly wound in a home with lots of bustle and activity. He's cool with quieter dogs that match his energy, and he'd probably be fine with a very aloof cat. But he really prefers not to be hassled. Your quiet lifestyle will be rewarded with a fun and funny little guy with a lot of spunk and sass buried under all of those anxieties. He does love toys and car rides. He is extremely good at balancing himself so he can look out the window. He prefers the world with a couple inches of glass between him and it. Dawson isn't interested in being everyone's friend, but he wants to be a very special friend for one or two very special people. If you are careful about who you let into your own circle of trust, then maybe Dawson is exactly the dog you are looking for.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: American Bulldog-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Austin, TX
Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Mixed. Long trail hikes? Check. Cuddle forever friend? Check Polite and well mannered? Check. Santana has learned so much in her stay at APA! She's accomplished leash walker and takes her volunteer buddy around Lady Bird Lake just about every morning. She knows all the skills to make her successful in a home: sit, down, coming when called and stay to name a few. Her perfect day is a long, leisurely hike followed by a snooze in your lap. She is a perfect lady in the house, and quite a beauty. She is sure to improve your decor just by lying on the couch. Her home skills are being impeccably house trained, a napper and she won't snatch anything off the counter. Santana takes her role as 'dog of the house' seriously, so she prefers to rule the roost as the only four-legged family member, and as the queen of the house, she'll need her new subjects to take it slow when meeting her. And remember, all APA adoptions come with free behavior assistance through APA's behavior team. And when you adopt a dog from APA, you are saving not one, but two lives - the life of the dog you're bringing into your home, and the next dog APA can save in the adopted dog's place.

      Location: Austin, TX
Posted Breed: Pointer / Catahoula Leopard Dog. Galaxy is APA's version of Princess Leia with eyes that sparkle brighter than stars in the sky when she sees the people she loves. This affectionate, sometimes goofy girl can be shy when first meeting new humans, but once she gets comfortably acquainted, she lights up and her personality shines. She loves, loves and loves her human friends and wants to cuddle with them, sneaking in kisses and curling up in their laps. Galaxy has great leash skills and is crate and house trained. Quick to learn, she's in APA's TOP (Total Obedience Training) Dog program and answers to the sit, down, stay, come, shake and place commands. When she's not demonstrating her obedience, she is happy to take walks and play with toys, then lay next to her people and ask for petting. And if it's been a while since you gave her a treat, she'll put her paw on your arm as a polite reminder. Come meet this girl with the cutest, most contagious smile and see if she can be part of your galaxy!

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Austin, TX
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever. Good looks? Check! Good manners? Check! Good fetching skills? Check, check check! Sleek bullet Bock has the focus and determination to fetch for hours. He loves to carry his ball around in his mouth, and sometimes if you're not fast enough with the next one, he'll ARWOOF around the ball! He's almost got the drop command mastered, so the fun never has to end. Don't worry, Bock has a softer side too. As soon as you call him over, he's all wiggles and back scratches. He loves to snuggle after a full day of fetch, so get comfortable! Bock loves learning too. He's happy to hang up his ball for a little bit while he's learning the finer points of obedience. He already knows sit and down and drop (most of the time). And his leash walking skills are on point! He does a little pulling here and there but because he loves treats so much, he's happy to trot alongside his person while being rewarded with treats for his awesome eye contact. Occasionally a squirrel or other little critter will run by, but a few quick moves and he's back to his attentive self. Don't miss out on the gorgeous dog! Bock is all retriever and will reward long days of fetching with companionship. Like all APA! adoptions, Bock comes with free lifetime behavior training. From pre-adoption, through the life of your dog, APA! is there to answer your questions and give helpful tips to help each dog be successful in their forever homes. Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Austin, TX
Posted Breed: Hound / Labrador Retriever. You couldn't ask for a better looking dog than Ellis. He is so handsome and strong, he almost resembles a Palomino stallion more than a humble dog. But Ellis is all dog, all the time. Ellis loves to play with tennis balls, and he loves to go on runs. He's definitely a sporty kind of dog. He also bonds strongly with his people. Once he's declared you family, he will protect you forever. As alpha as he is, he will still gently ask for pets with a dainty paw placed on your lap (or treat bag). He can be quite the dapper gentlemen when he wants to be. Ellis is best suited for an active adopter who has a yard or can take him for daily jogs. If you're looking for a real dog's dog, then you might consider Ellis.

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Austin, TX
Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed. Captain Jack takes his "captain" title seriously. He can seem like he's All Business when you first meet him. But once he gets to know you, he will show you the fun, goofy side he has underneath. Jack is house trained and knows sit. He is very people focused, and once he is bonded, he will want to be with you all the time. He is a pleaser at heart, the kind of dog that prefers to have a job to do. So it should be fun to train him. Captain Jack is a bit business in the front, party in the back. He is not the easiest dog to get to know, but once you do, you will have a loyal and charming companion for life.

Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Austin, TX
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed. Alex's smile and joyful spirit lights up every room he walks into, though it's hard to call it a "walk" because it's more of a wiggly prance. His sparkling eyes and tongue hanging out only add to his charm. His joy is contagious, so you just have to smile when you see him coming! You would expect a senior to be a little slower to move, but Alex loves chasing the tennis ball and is surprisingly athletic at his age! He'll leap into the air to catch it and run (wiggle) back to you. He's a curious boy who loves to explore. Alex came to APA as a stray, so little is known about his life before us. What we do know is that he has cancer and has been deemed a hospice case -that just means the APA clinic believes in his case, his quality of life would be better without treatment. Don't judge him by his diagnosis, though, because he's active, playful, and full of life! He brings SO much joy to the APA staff and volunteers who have spent time with him, and he's sure to add joy to your home! Come meet our happy, prancing senior who will wiggle his way right into your heart!
