If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Note: Please scroll further down to read more about this dog. Foster homes welcome reviewing an application that can be completed online by visiting our website at www.carepets.org We are open on the 2nd & 4th Saturdays from 10:00am-1:00pm. Our adoption center is located at 1080 Saratoga Ave., Suite #3 (facing DeMille Dr.) More info is on our website at www.carepets.org Tia is a darling 5 year old, spayed Pit Bull, with an exceptionally kind and sweet demeanor. As a rescue dog, she’s been through a lot; yet she shows love towards anyone she meets. She really enjoys hanging out with her human family, including older children. She currently is a part of all of our family gatherings, and is always happy to be the center of attention. Tia is also an active and playful girl. She needs daily exercise and loves going for long walks. She’s also good at retrieving, and is always willing to drop the ball in return for a treat. She travels well in the car too. Tia is house trained and sleeps comfortably through the night in her bed. She has learned basic commands (come, sit, stay, down) and she would benefit from additional training to be the well-behaved dog as she could be. She is being socialized with other dogs and does well with any dog, large or small. She is extremely food motivated and is willing to do anything for a treat. As much as she loves food, Tia does not show any aggressive behavior towards food or any high value treats. Tia has chronic dry-eyes (a condition known as KCS - keratoconjunctivitis sicca) and will require daily eye drops for the rest of her life. She also suffers from atopic allergies (such as grass) that will need to be cared for with daily medication as well. Tia is a true gem and has stolen our hearts. She’s truly precious and deserves a forever home that will love and pamper her as part of the family. If you are interested in adding this sweet girl to your family, please visit our website at www.carepets.org and complete an online application for Sharon to review. If Tia is not yet posted, please email Sharon@carepets.org and tell us a little about yourself and what you’re looking for in a dog. SPECIAL NOTE: KUDOS and Gratitude to everyone who helped to support Tia’s rescue: San Jose Animal Care & Services (SJACS – Guardian Angel Program), San Jose Animal Advocates, PAWS for SJACS, Dr. Karin Rapal DDS and staff, many individual donors, and Kaajal Tiwary with D for Dog Training. We are still accepting donations to offset Tia’s medical expenses – donation information is on our website – www.carepets.org- indicate your donation to go towards Tia.

Our adoption center is located at 1080 Saratoga Ave., Suite #3 (facing DeMille Dr.) More info is on our website at www.carepets.org Cody is a cute little Chihuahua puppy, who's about 7 months old. He is very playful with his toys and with kids. He is very smart dog - he sleeps well in his crate, he is fully potty trained, with no accidents in the house. Cody is very loving and playful. He goes for walks and becomes friendly with others very quickly. Cody gets excited and wags his tail to meet you to play. We promise you that Cody is going to have a great time with you. You might have noticed from his pictures that his right eye is smaller and lighter-colored than his left eye. Our veterinarian has examined his eye and it is likely he was born that way. Even though he is unable to see out of his right eye, it certainly doesn’t stop him one bit from being a fun, loving pup. Cody has his vaccinations up to date and also been neutered and microchipped. He's waiting for his forever home to adopt him today! If you're interested in this great pup, please visit our website at www.carepets.org and fill out an online application for Sharon to review.
