Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Lucky lived up to his name when he was rescued, but hasn't yet found a new home. He has bonded very strongly to his fosters, but can be shy around new people so will require time to adjust. Lucky would probably do best in a home without very young children as loud noises and fast motions can scare him. He's already leash, crate and house trained so ready to go there. As with all our rescue dogs, Lucky has been neutered and is current on his vaccinations, worming, flea control and heartworm prevention. Lucky's adoption fee is just $95.00 plus a one-time charge of $10.99 for his LIFETIME, transferable microchip registration with HomeAgain. If you think you might be lucky to call this cute little guy yours, please click on the green arrow icon above to submit an online application. Once approved, we'll gladly arrange a time for you to meet this delightful dog in person. Thanks for offering a rescue pet a home!

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Dexter

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Conroe, TX
Posted Breed: Hound / Mixed (short coat). Dexter is a handsome and sensitive guy who was found injured (perhaps hit by a car?) as a young puppy. An SPCA volunteer nursed him back to health under veterinary supervision and he's now ready for a new home. Guessing his mixed ancestry may include Hound and others. However, he's not a very large dog and we'd expect him to mature in the 50 to 60 lb. range. Dexter has learned to walk very nicely on leash in his foster home and one of his favorite games is chasing tennis balls bounced off walls. Dexter has been neutered, and is up to date on his vaccinations, worming, flea control and heartworm prevention. His adoption fee is just $95.00 plus a one-time charge of $10.99 for his lifetime microchip registration with HomeAgain. If you'd like Dexter to become a faithful member of your family, please click on the green arrow icon near the top of the page. Thanks for thinking rescue!

      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Conroe, TX
Posted Breed: Border Collie / Mixed (medium coat). Walker's personality is as delightful as his beautiful Border Collie mix looks! He's a very friendly dog and was perfectly behaved at his first Petco Adoption Event, greeting everyone with enthusiasm. His foster family reports he's a wonderful companion around kids, though he hasn't been thoroughly tested for his reaction to other dogs and cats yet. Walker is a relatively young adult so he should reasonably have plenty of happy healthy years ahead. A home with a nice large fenced yard and playmates would be ideal, as he does have some energy to expend! As with all our rescue dogs, Walker has been neutered and is up to date on his vaccinations, worming, flea control and heartworm prevention. Walker's adoption fee is just $95 plus a one-time charge of $10.99 for his LIFETIME microchip registration with HomeAgain. If you'd like Walker to join your family fun, please click on the green arrow icon near the top of the page to fill out an online adoption application. We bet he'll easily keep up with your best athletic efforts and thanks for thinking rescue!

      Location: Conroe, TX
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Willie and his sister Trisha were rescued from rough conditions by an SPCA volunteer, and he should be ready to go to a new home in early February. They are truly mixed breed pups, mostly Dachshund-Chihuahua (Chiweenie), though we're told they have a small Shepherd-Dalmation grandparent! Even though their dad was small, mom is medium sized and we think their growth rate suggests that should mature in the 25-35 lb. range. With improved care, they are both thriving and loving all the attention they're getting. However, due to their small size and young age they'd do best in a home with older children and adults. As with all our rescue dogs, Willie and Trisha have been neutered/spayed, and are up to date on their vaccinations, worming, flea control and heartworm prevention. Their adoption fee is just $95.00 each, plus a one-time charge of $10.99 for a lifetime microchip registration with HomeAgain. If you'd love to call one of these adorable pups a member of your family, please click on the green arrow icon near the top of the page to submit an online adoption application. Breed: Black Mouth Cur-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Conroe, TX
Posted Breed: Black Mouth Cur / Hound / Mixed (short coat). This adorable, calm and friendly pup named Ezra is as mixed breed as they come--our best guess is some Black Mouth Cur and possibly hound. The Black Mouth Cur breed makes for great family dogs that are both sensitive and social, best bonded with their people before training begins. The BMC thrives with human companionship, daily routines and free access to at least an acre of yard. These dogs will NOT be happy spending the day on the couch alone! Ezra still has a lot of puppy in him but he is already trained to walk well on a leash and knows basic obediance commands. We think Ezra should mature into a medium sized adult (around 45 to 50 lb). Right now he's at that gangly stage but is quite well-behaved considering he was just picked up as a stray. His adoption fee of $95.00 includes completed neuter surgery and he's up to date on vaccinations, worming, flea control and heartworm prevention. There's an additional one-time charge of $10.99 to cover the cost of his lifetime transferable microchip registration with HomeAgain. Ezra will be ready to go to a new home around November 14 (he's going to be a star in our Doggies & Divas event on November 12th!). If you'd love to have Ezra at your side furever, please click on the green arrow icon near the top of the page to submit an online application. Ezra thanks you for picking a rescue pet!
