Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Hi! The name's Dax - and I know... you think I'm adorable. And I am - but I'm so much more! I'm a nine year old Chihuahua snuggle machine - seriously, you will never be cold with me around. I'm also super smart - I know how to sit and stay on command! I'm still working on my house training, but I promise I'm trying to get better! I play well with others - even dogs that are larger than me (not hard to be, am I right?). I'm also super loving and affectionate, and I'm an excellent companion for walks. Seriously, what more could you ask for in a lifetime friend?! Come see me today - let's get this adoption started! For adoption information or information on fostering this sweet boy, or to complete an application, please go to: http://www.pawsinthecity.org/adopt.htm References and a home visit are required for all adoptions.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

He is house trained and crate trained. zzMarty is going to training classes. He is good with children but has not been around house cats. zzMarty likes to play with other dogs but does not know his limits and can get too rough. I believe he would do best in a single dog home that has time to return all the love and affection he has to offer! Posted Breed: Pharaoh Hound / Great Dane / Mixed (short coat). My name is Scotch, and I've been waiting patiently for my furever home for a while now and, quite honestly, the waiting is getting old. I'm more than ready for my furever family, thank you very much. I'm a handsome two and half year old medium to large guy - the rescue folks think I'm a Pharaoh hound and Great Dane mix - with a gorgeous tawny coat and beautiful green eyes. And I'm graceful, too! Or so the rescue folks tell me. Had a somewhat rough beginning, but thanks to all the training the rescue folks have invested in me, I'm now much more confident in myself. I'd make a wonderful addition to your family - as long as I'm the only four-legged family member and there's no young children around. The ideal human will be a strong leader for me and help me continue to mature. The wonderful folks here at Paws in the City will provide training to the right person. Please consider making me a part of your family. You won't regret it! Posted Breed: Appenzell Mountain Dog / Retriever / Mixed (long coat). zzMaverick is a ten year old that is still very healthy and active. He is current on all his vaccinations, micro-chipped, and house trained. He knows the basic commands (sit, come, quiet). He is also very loving and super gentle with children. He is a medium sized blonde mixed breed (possibly appenzell mountain dog and some kind of retriever or shepherd) approximately 40 pounds. He has lived his entire life with an older dog, but may need to be re-acquainted with other dogs. Because of his innate hunting trait, he probably shouldn't live with cats or other animals. Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). zzSweet Pea needs a patient, safe, loving home. She lives up to her name and really enjoys nothing more than a good cuddle and watching TV. She's awesome on the leash and is alright with other dogs when introduced appropriately but will growl at them if cornered. Living in a home is still new to her and she may get anxious moving from room to room, or the stairs may scare her at times so she needs a home and family that will help her gain confidence. zzSweet Pea was found shivering and hiding in bushes this past January, her rescuers bribed her with treats and took her home. zzSweet Pea has been vaccinated and spayed. Posted Breed: Bulldog / Boxer / Mixed (short coat). I'm Maggie, a Bulldog/Boxer mix. People tell me I'm almost a senior dog (they keep insisting I'm about 8 years old), but I have no idea what they're talking about. Senior dogs are OLD. And lazy. I am NOT old. Or lazy, thank you very much. I'm quite active, as a matter of fact. I love, love, love walks...but they do need to be structured. I'm a bit head strong, so I'll need a family that'll let me know I'm not the boss, and will provide me the structure I need to thrive. The people here tell me I've done really, really well in my training program and as a bonus, Paws in the City will train my adopter too! Sounds like a win- win to me! Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). This is zzBlessy. She was found under a bridge in March starving and pregnant (of course we didn’t know that). What we did know was that she has had MANY litters and has been abused. She’s covered in scars and is very un-trusting and skittish. We brought her home and we started the process of trying to get her healthy but it seemed like no matter what we did, we couldn’t get weight on her. We took her to the vet and got her current on all her vaccinations and that’s when we found out she was pregnant. On June 1st, she gave birth to 14 puppies. A few weeks later, she developed a severe skin allergy that forced us to take the puppies away and wean them. After treatment with antibiotics and no nursing, her skin infection cleared up and she started putting on weight. Today, she is completely healthy and needs a home. It takes her a while to warm up but once she’s comfortable, she is loving and sweet. She also does well with our 11 year old daughter. We’ve taught her to sit, lay, shake, get up and get down; she is very smart and I feel in the right environment and with some training, she will be the best dog! Sex: Male Male

      Location: Dallas, TX
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). Meet zzStaley, a Min Pin/Terrier mix, about 4 years old, neutered, short/docked tail, 30 lbs. In good health, current on heart worm prevention and vaccinations. zzStaley's original owner left Staley and his sister crated, alone, in an apt for 12-18 hours a day. Neighbors complained about them crying so the owner surrendered them both. The current foster responded to a Facebook plea and has had zzStaley since January. zzStaley is vey smart. He knows sit and lay. A routine suits him best. He prefers to have his own plastic bowl (metal bowls frighten him) and his own eating area. He is very loving to the person he bonds. And is protective of everyone. When someone cries or yells he tries to figure out the aggressor and will bark/nip until the situation calms down. He is a protector. He is not aggressive with other animals or with people in general. zzStaley needs a calm loving home preferable without small children and maybe as an only dog. He is doggie door trained to potty outside. He would make a fantastic companion for a single woman or a couple without children or an older retired couple. Disclaimer: This dog is a participant in the Paws in the City Guest Dog Program, so ongoing care and custody are provided by the foster, not by Paws in the City. Posted Breed: Doberman Pinscher / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Buddy has been through a lot since he was rescued at White Rock Lake by a nice couple . They tried to find someone to take him without much luck and ended up at their Mom's house in Dallas. He was doing fine although not getting enough attention . Unfortunately the next door neighbors are backyard breeding- and one of them attacked Buddy through the fence and he almost lost his foot. He was recovering in the couple's bedroom but they knew they needed a better place for him... that's when we stepped in. No other rescues in Dallas responded to their pleas. We are all so full...but sometimes you just have to make room. He is at the rescue now. He is over his shyness, might be a little slow to trust , but once he knows you he is a doll...he loves to play tug a war with a rope toy, plays with a football, loves to walk on a leash and go in our woods to play. He is a great dog, and will be a terrific protector of his home and family. He likes to protect his food but was said to be living with a Yorkie. Just separate feed bowls and supervision will control the situation. He would do well with some obedience training, but he is a big puppy at about one year old with lots of energy and gives sweet kisses, too. If you think Buddy might fit well into your household, please go to: http://www.pawsinthecity.org/adopt.htm "Buddy is a participant in the Paws in the City Guest Dog Program, so his ongoing care and custody are provided by his foster, not by Paws in the City."
