Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). These BONDED Chihuahua x girls came to COPR all the way from TX! We are requiring a fenced-in yard for these girls. They are young and highly active, see their videos listed below, they love chasing each other around the yard and keep each other entertained! After they finish playing they enjoy nothing more than curling up on a lap together for a nap. Ebony : around 1 yr. old, 7.8 lbs. Housebroken, she goes outside and uses pee pads, she does require a pee pad down to avoid accidents on carpets or area rugs. Friendly with new people, has basic training, likes toys, goofy, lap pet, playful, rides well in car, intelligent. high exercise needs, good with other dogs, unsure about cats, good with men and women adults. Ebony is high energy and needs space to run (FAST) and play, in her downtime she enjoys snuggling on your lap and is very loyal, she is food driven which helps with her obedience, but she does need to be fed separate from other animals in the home. Ivy : around 4 yrs. old, 10.9 lbs. Housebroken, she goes outside and uses pee pads, she does require a pee pad down to avoid accidents on carpets or area rugs. Shy with new people, has basic training. likes toys, affectionate, playful, does well in car, timid/shy, intelligent, high energy level, high exercise needs, good with other dogs, unsure about cats, good with men and women adults. very sweet and loyal, enjoys snuggling with her people and likes to give lots of kisses, she can be timid in new situations or environments but will warm up quickly with reassurance, she and Ebony have a lot of energy and love to run (FAST), they play together most of the day but when they finally nap they enjoy being on a lap. From their foster mom: They sleep great through the night with no accidents. Will sleep in a crate, but they prefer to snuggle up in bed. Both do well on a leash, and enjoy a walk. Ivy listens much better than Ebony. Especially if there is a squirrel in the yard... I have to physically track down Ebony and pick her up to get her inside. She is quite the hunter.. Lol...a big personality in a tiny body, no doubt! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pomeranian (long coat). Our tripod Libbi is currently recovering from knee surgery. Although she is cleared of activity restrictions inside at this point, she does still have some outdoor restrictions. She is a diva that loves attention, but also does well hanging out on her own in a pen. She will require a fenced in yard, a family with no children and only one or two other small pets. She is very active and would love to run and run once she is cleared of all restrictions. She is mostly a very sweet dog that enjoys being the center of attention and will let you know when she needs to be pet (which is all the time that you are around her). She doesn't particularly enjoy being held and will try to jump out of her arms if she sees a nearby couch or rug that she could be on, but will stay in your lap when she's tired (which is rare). She can display some undesirable behaviors when she doesn't get her way, however a stern no solves the problem in most situations. Libbi does not do well in a car so a close adopter is preferred and it is hard for her to walk on wood/tile floor because of her missing leg so some carpetted areas are a must. Owner surrender – couldn’t care for. 2 yrs. old. 4.3 lbs. In foster care in Columbus, OH. Posted Breed: Pomeranian. Owner surrender - terminally ill. Frankie is a very loving, sweet, affectionate Pom. He wants and needs to be the “center of attention” therefore, he should be the only dog. He does not like cats at all. And because he is very protective of his owner, there should not be childen in the home. He would make an excellent doggie for an active senior or a home with adults only. He LOVES going for rides and playing/being outside, he enjoys playing fetch or just chilling outside, he also loves his toys. Frankie is also leashed trained and enjoys his walks. Frankie loves to lay beside his owner and is very proctective. Frankie does tend to get angry and growls when he doesn’t want to be “bothered”. He also gets angry and growls when he thinks others might be harming someone close to him or his owner. Frankie will make an awesome companion for someone that needs or is looking for a active, loving and protective family member, he is very loyal to his owner. In foster care in Frankfort, KY. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Papillon / Mixed (medium coat). super sweet, 11 lbs., 1 ½ yr. old Chi x. Thanks to our friends at One By One Animal Advocates for their help in getting Fifi to us from a shelter in WV where she ended up as a result of a hoarding case. Fifi is a very fearful little girl. She bonds really quick to her people but she is quite shy in new situations. We are working on socializing her. She is a velcro dog to the max! Fifi just wants a kind human to cuddle with and love on her. She is just starved for attention. Fifi is definitely a Velcro dog, and will stay with you at all costs. She will nap with you, sit with you, even put her head in your lap at the dinner table. She is fine with smaller dogs. She occasionally snaps at our big dog, but has never bit him. She wants to be the prima Donna. She divides her love between those in the house. She will steal your heart. She is the quintessential lap dog. Fifi is doing really well with going out to potty but she does need to be encouraged to do her duty as she will act like she is done so she can be with her human. She uses the pee pads at times. She does fairly well on a leash. In foster care in Columbus, OH. Check out Fifi's album on our FB page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1368298633238893

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed. Meet Brody, approx. 5 yr. old, 20 lbs., chi x. COPR took him into rescue because his owner passed away. We want to thank our friends at One By One Animal Advocates & Laura's Lost Pet Services, Inc., for their part in saving this poor soul. You can read his incredibly story here: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.373293723063174 Comments from his foster mom: He is not comfortable in the car. He should be harnessed or in a crate as he tends to run around the car and will want to bolt out as soon as a door is open. He hasn’t been socialized that much, so he is a little shy, but I think he will work through that as he gets more comfortable and confident. He is so sweet and snuggly, but because of his background, he will need an owner that will be sensitive to his fears and will work to socialize him. He gets along with other dogs, but does get a little possessive of his owner and likes to have the attention on him. He can be playful, but would be best in a house with low-key dogs. He has so much love to give, he loves to jump on my lap and give me kisses. Someone is going to be so lucky to get this guy in their life! In foster care in Lakewood, OH. Breed: Pomeranian

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pomeranian (long coat). Leo is an approximately 6 year old stray from an OH dog shelter. Leo is very affectionate and showers the older children in his foster home with kisses. His foster mom says he is quite silly and enjoys playing with toys, but doesn't like to share. His adopter should be someone who enjoys taking walks as Leo would rather go on a walk than hang out in a fenced in back yard. Leo keeps to himself and wouldn't mind being an only dog, but also gets along with other dogs his size. He does not seem to like large dogs or the cats in his foster home. He does not like to be picked up, but does enjoy the company of his foster family. Despite consulting with our veterinarian and starting a joint supplement and anti-inflammatory possible arthritis in his back, Leo will growl, spin and attack his back side when he is up on his hind legs and comes down or when you put him down. It very well may be a normal behavior for him since the medications did not help. Check out Leo's album on our FB page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1249386811796743

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Skid is a Stunning brindle colored Chi x . Update! Skid is now totally housebroken and very social with women. He has warmed up to his foster dad with time, so he can be comfortable around men given time to get used to them. He was surrendered to COPR because his previous owner had too many dogs and was unable to care for them all. He is very nervous and scared around new people, it just takes him some time to warm up. He was not socialized at all in his previous home. He would do best in a home with another confident, friendly dog. Dogs seem to comfort him which isn't a surprise as his previous owner had a LOT of dogs and he had very little contact with humans. Comments from his foster Mom - Skid came to our family needing time and patience to begin trusting people again. Initially so timid he was afraid to be touched, he has gained confidence and has really starting coming out of his shell. Once he warms up, he is a loyal and affectionate companion that is happy to be curled up next to his person. Skid would love to meet a family that will understand his unique disposition and allow him the time to get comfortable! Check out Skid's album on our FB page: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1003414216394005.1073742252.203914489677319&type=3
