Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). ~~Q-tip or just Q is a very sweet older boy. He weighs in at 20-25 pounds. We think he is a chihuahua mix. At 7 years old he led a very hard life of being locked in a cage in a basement living in his own filth. What his WV foster and his PA foster have learned is that he just wants to lay on your lap in a blanket and be loved. He will lay on the back of the couch and look out the window and wait for your return, so leave the blinds up a bit so he can see. He is great on a leash. While walking, fast cars or trucks might scare him, but that is getting less and less. He likes other dogs as long if they are laid back. If the dogs are energetic and in his face he will growl and retreat for safety. He has shown bouts of play, but when it gets to high energy he panics. Cats seem to be a sense of curiosity for him and he is overly curious. If they hiss or swat and hiss at them him may begin to ignore them. He is crate trained, he might whine for less than 5 minutes but will settle after that. He loves ALL people. He no longer has a nervous shake. Do you have room in your home and heart for this special boy?

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (medium coat). Hey everyone! I'm Peppa, but I respond to Pep Pep Pep too. I'm a Treeing Walker Coonhound/Australian Cattledog/Blue Heeler mix. What a mouthful! Anyway I'm searching for a very special family. You see, after receiving life-saving treatment for a variety of issues, it was noted that I have something neurological going on. I've seen the docs at Penn and had an MRI - nothing we can fix, probably congenital, and unfortunately we don't know if I'll progress - but I am stable . But aside from a high step and sometimes walking in circles I'm pretty steady on my feet! More importantly, I am SUCH a love bug and a really happy go lucky dude. I've been working hard at learning what my foster mom teaches and I even use the dog door and go potty outside. I have exactly 0% understanding of my size so kids over 10 would be better but I'll love on kids of any age if you let me. Can I come home with you? Apply mostlymuttz.org

Posted Breed: Golden Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). My name is Marley. I am around 2 years old, a Lab/Retriver mix. I was found tied to a telephone pole on March 14th and was taken to a local shelter. I soon became ill and had a stay in the ICU for a few days - the folks at MMR stepped up and rescued me. They were really worried! Once I went to foster I proved to be super smart - I learned my basic commands in just one morning! I did have a little trouble with impulse control so it was decided I should not go to a home with young children while I worked on my jumping. Unfortunately, the foster home was only temporary and I had to go to the kennel. Now a small crew of volunteers is working with me frequently to help me learn how to show my excitement without jumping or being mouthy. I am on a carefully planned positive reinforcement training plan that is teaching me focus and patience both with and without distractions. The distractions definitely made a difference. I've come to love and appreciate the volunteers for taking the time to teach me how to be a good boy so the right forever family will find it difficult to pass me over when they're looking for a furry companion. We are now hoping to expand the group of people working with me to see if the work holds up with other people. It's come to my attention that my stay here in the kennel isn't exactly cheap, so if you can't adopt me, I'd sure appreciate it if you could click on "Sponsor This Pet" and help offset the Rescue's costs! I'm not quite ready for adoption yet, but stay tuned for updates! 5/1/17 Hey! Marley here checking in. I have been in my foster home for about a week now and I am loving it. No more kennel life for me! My favorite things to do are sleep, relax, and play with my toys. I love the sofa! It is probably my favorite place to hang out. My Foster home also has other dogs in it, so i have been making new friends and learning so much. My friends are teaching me how to play and have fun! Stay tuned for more updates!

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Update: Sky has been a constant love bug as a foster. Although her stated aged in not a puppy, dont tell her that - she thinks she can act like a puppy and run like a puppy. She chases the ball when the kids are playing baseball out back. She is doing well with the three other dogs in the house. She is on medication for a skin condition and is doing very well with it. She does jump and bark much but she will nuzzle your hand when she wants you to pet her. Please consider Sky for her forever home, this girl deserves the best. See her running around the yard, thinking she can play lacrosse by carrying a baseball bat! https://www.facebook.com/andrea.s.galambos/videos/10209269652400480/ Skylar's savior. A good Samaritan saw this little girl running through traffic on I95 and almost get hit by two cars. He stopped and she came to him, he put her in his back seat and took her to ACCT. He was not a dog person; a younger guy who was so upset by her condition he was crying in the parking lot and waiting room. He said he stopped because he couldn't think of her getting hit. We would love to find out who he is so we can Thank him for saving this girl. She is esti mated to be 6+ years old. We are not able to determine her breed at this time due to the horrid condition of her body. What we do know is that she is sweet and loving. Although she can not be introduced to other dogs right now we do think she will be fine with them. This little lady will undergo surgery to remove mammary tumors as soon as her skin and ear infections are under control. Until then she is safe in foster care being pampered and celebrating life she is scheduled for her mammary tumors on 3/30/16 at 10:30 AM. She is truly good with other dogs but when she picks a person she loves she is your forever shadow.

Posted Breed: Terrier / Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Zoey is a wonderful senior girl who makes a perfect companion dog. She likes to follow her foster mom around the house and wags almost constantly! Being older, Zoey is quiet and laid back, but she does have a spunky side and will join in with her foster siblings when they play. She does well with most dogs, but prefers not to have a high energy dog in her face; she will bark at the dog to let them know. Zoey's favorite activities cover both extremes - she loves laying on the couch but she also loves going for walks. Zoey is overweight so she is currently on a diet and daily exercise regimen. She has already lost a few pounds, and her foster mom is noticing a more alert, energetic, happy Zoey! Weight loss is a big deal for Zoey - as she loses weight, her diabetes will be better controlled. She gets insulin injections twice a day with her meals, but she wants you to know that it doesn't bother her at all. Her foster mom is a nurse so she can teach you how to do it! Also, due to the diabetes, Zoey cannot have very many snacks throughout the day. She doesn't seem to mind this at all, because when her foster siblings get a treat she gets extra kisses and snuggles! Upsate 8/29-- Zoey has been very playful over the past couple of weeks! She continues to follow her foster mom around, but she now does it with a spring in her step, and sometimes a playful grumble. She also enjoys bouncing around with a fellow foster, Kindra, who is small like her. Zoey is also showing her foster mom how well she listens when told "stay". She will stop dead in her tracks if she hears the word, even if it is directed at one of her siblings! There's a little bit of stubborn in this girl when you ask her to sit. She knows how to do it but prefers to do it on her own time; how much can one ask of a little spunky old lady?! She thinks "stay" is plenty!

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Do you see how happy I am in all of my pictures? It’s because despite being cast aside by my owners I still love and trust people, especially the Mostly Muttz volunteers who have made it their mission to enrich my life with many new adventures every day when they pick me up from my new, quieter kennel. They tell me I have a light in my eyes that proves my spirit won’t be dimmed! I am putting on much needed weight since my move and I’ve learned I have a few quirks. First, did you know how absolutely terrifying duck decoy statues are? They are seconded only by killer rocks that hide in the tall grass and baby pools where I might find my dainty paws wet if I’m not paying attention. I like to build a pillow fort behind which I hide with my tennis ball and happily chew for hours (if you let me!) but I’ll also just as soon snuggle on your lap. So why am I still not adopted? Well, I need to be an only pet. I never learned to properly interact or play with others because my owners didn’t socialize me, and at 7 years old that’s just not going to change. I know there are plenty of people out there who just want that one special companion and I dream of one of those people bringing me into their home forever! 8/31: I am developing a love of various bodies of water and those funny looking dogs that swim under the surface. They're fun to watch! I get very excited when the volunteers arrive to take me out but I behave like a lady on the harness because I know a nice long walk awaits. I do hope one of these days I don't have to return to the kennel after one of those walks...do you know someone who can accept that I must be the only furry love in their life? If so, send them my way!

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Gypsy is a 5 year old heartworm positive lab mix who made the long trip with the others from SC. You may remember her puppies, the G litter, who needed to be bottle fed so that she could begin heart worm treatment. Gypsy was spayed and began treatment in her new foster home. Gypsy is a shy but sweet loving girl on the path to be as healthy as she is beautiful. She is less stressed but a little nervous around men - we are working on that with her. She just really wants to sit in your lap and be loved! Gypsy is all done with her heartworm treatment, she is healthy, happy, active and eager to find her forever. She is still a little nervous with anything new and very nervous with men. After all this girl has been through before coming into rescue who could blame her for being nervous. She just needs love and patience and you will not be disappointed with the wonderful dog that is under that shyness. Could you give her a chance?

Babe was living outside and the owner was willing to surrender her to rescue. She is safe and in foster care and would love to find a place to live out her days. Babe is a great sweet older lady and has learned how to give kisses and loves to roam the yard! Babe would most likely do best as the only dog, but a laid back mellow house mate would be okay too. Babe loves to spend time out in the yard and she also loves walks, she is great on a leash. She really loves her people and would really like to have her own person once again that she could enjoy walking with and then laying at their feet. She is a real sweetheart who really deserves her own home to enjoy her senior years. Could it be yours? Apply at mostlymuttz.org!

She is now in a wonderful foster home in PA who are working on helping her regain some much need pounds. She is a young terrier mix who is good with other dogs. She's nervous from her past life, but when approached slowly does well. .Henna is a very loving girl but she has had some rough patches in her life which have made her very cautious with new people and new dogs. She just needs a little extra patience to be able to come around to show you just how sweet she is and fun loving as well. She likes other dogs and enjoys play time with them, she just needs to do slow intros to know they are ok. Henna does experience seizures occasionally, which she takes medication daily but it doesn't hold her back in anyway from enjoying life.

Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). 09/21/2016 I am now down to attending physical therapy once a week. Yesterday, I actually took a few independent steps while walking on the water treadmill! I haven't been walking like that since before my knee surgery. I'm really looking forward to cooler weather and being able to run around outside more with my foster brother. That also means snow will be coming soon and I LOVE to run around playing in the snow! Happy Fall folks! 08/29/2016 Hello! Bunny here checking in! I have been super busy over the past several months having surgery on both of my knees. I'm now recovered from the surgery and they are feeling much better. I am now back to attending physical therapy to see if they can get me to walk using both rear legs independently. In the long run, that is what will be so much better for me so that I am not putting all of the stress on my front legs. But, I may just be in the routine of "bunny hopping" everywhere and this may just be what I will do forever! W e are also working on strengthening my core with exercises several times a day at my foster home. I am fast and can run around the back yard chasing my foster brother without any problems! I don't even understand why he doesn't hop like I do. The Surgeon said I'm quite special and he really cannot predict what exactly my future will hold for me as far as my mobility is concerned. I'll just keep working hard and doing my exercises to strengthen up! I enjoy spending time with the 2 younger children that come here often. They are 2 and 5. However, I do not like when they decide they want to get rough with one another. I'm afraid someone is going to get hurt and I like to jump in to break them up so they don't hurt each other. I don't understand why they want to fight so much. I'm gently trying to teach them to keep their hands to themselves. I just have to bark at them and run over and they understand what I'm saying and stop what they're doing. I'm just going to continue hanging out here in my foster home with my foster family and siblings until my forever home finds me! 02/19/2016 This is Bunny. She was given this name because of the unique way she gets around. She will "bunny hop" everywhere she goes if allowed. Bunny has scoliosis and other spinal abnormalities and is currently having physical therapy to build up her muscles as she is experiencing some discomfort. Her foster family affectionately calls her "Bun Bun". This girl hasn't met anyone she does not like. She's friendly with everyone she meets and always happy to greet them. She is house broken and crate trained. She prefers to sleep in bed with someone if allowed. Bunny will climb up on your lap or lay on top of you any time she gets the chance. She is currently living in a home with a male and female resident dog. Initially, she was very guarded around them and would snap at them if they went to sniff her. They are now getting along without any issues. Bunny is also frequently exposed to children from 2 through 18 and loves all of them. She loves to run around outside in the fenced in yard and play, but will come in and take a nice long nap on the sofa in front of the fire. Do you have room on your sofa for her? Please consider this sweet girl for your furever pet. Apply at www.mostlymuttz.org

Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Mixed (short coat). Meet Chubby! This handsome dude is an middle age Basset mix. Chubby was found to have a heavy heartworm burden and has since been treated. He did have some complications during treatment that required medical attention, but now he's fit as a fiddle. He needs to continue on activity restriction for a few more weeks, but honestly this guy is so low key he restricts himself. IF your looking for a super senior hound this is your man! 9/5 update: Chubby loves to play with his furry foster siblings - he has a lot of energy and they help him burn it! He loves to run along the fence so it would be awful nice if he moved to a furever home that has a fenced in yard. He enjoys walks twice daily. Chubby is probably best suited for older children given his age and even better to move into a home where his people aren't gone too much - he doesn't love it when they leave.
