Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). ~~Q-tip or just Q is a very sweet older boy. He weighs in at 20-25 pounds. We think he is a chihuahua mix. At 7 years old he led a very hard life of being locked in a cage in a basement living in his own filth. What his WV foster and his PA foster have learned is that he just wants to lay on your lap in a blanket and be loved. He will lay on the back of the couch and look out the window and wait for your return, so leave the blinds up a bit so he can see. He is great on a leash. While walking, fast cars or trucks might scare him, but that is getting less and less. He likes other dogs as long if they are laid back. If the dogs are energetic and in his face he will growl and retreat for safety. He has shown bouts of play, but when it gets to high energy he panics. Cats seem to be a sense of curiosity for him and he is overly curious. If they hiss or swat and hiss at them him may begin to ignore them. He is crate trained, he might whine for less than 5 minutes but will settle after that. He loves ALL people. He no longer has a nervous shake. Do you have room in your home and heart for this special boy?

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Henna was found emaciated and so overloaded with fleas she needed a transfusion! She is now in a wonderful foster home in PA who are working on helping her regain some much need pounds. She is a young terrier mix who is good with other dogs. She's nervous from her past life, but when approached slowly does well. .Henna is a very loving girl but she has had some rough patches in her life which have made her very cautious with new people and new dogs. She just needs a little extra patience to be able to come around to show you just how sweet she is and fun loving as well. She likes other dogs and enjoys play time with them, she just needs to do slow intros to know they are ok. Henna does experience seizures occasionally, which she takes medication daily but it doesn't hold her back in anyway from enjoying life.

Posted Breed: Treeing Walker Coonhound / Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Mixed (medium coat). Hey everyone! I'm Peppa, but I respond to Pep Pep Pep too. I'm a Treeing Walker Coonhound/Australian Cattledog/Blue Heeler mix. What a mouthful! Anyway I'm searching for a very special family. You see, after receiving life-saving treatment for a variety of issues, it was noted that I have something neurological going on. I've seen the docs at Penn and had an MRI - nothing we can fix, probably congenital, and unfortunately we don't know if I'll progress - but I am stable . But aside from a high step and sometimes walking in circles I'm pretty steady on my feet! More importantly, I am SUCH a love bug and a really happy go lucky dude. I've been working hard at learning what my foster mom teaches and I even use the dog door and go potty outside. I have exactly 0% understanding of my size so kids over 10 would be better but I'll love on kids of any age if you let me. Can I come home with you? Apply mostlymuttz.org

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). 10/7 Gloria here checking in. As you can see I have some updated pictures from a wonderful rescue volunteer. I did my best cheese for the camera and I think that I look super cute! I have been super busy these last few months looking for a home and can you believe it?! I haven't found my perfect forever yet! I don't have any idea why... not to brag but really, I'm smart, super cute, low key and wonderful companion! Today I went to meet a forever family and they loved me! but they had this thing call a cat. My foster mom said that I did awesome in not reacting but she didn't like me much. I sniffed at her and walked away she grabbed me and scratched me in the face. I didn't really like it so after she got under the couch and started hissing at me I decided that I might want to get to her. So even though the family loved me they decided it was best that they didn't keep me. I'm super bummed but my foster mom stopped at this magic window thing on the way home and I got to share a chicken sandwich (yum!) so it wasn't all bad. I did really well and my foster mom was super proud of me for not trying to eat her so we are saying no cats for now. Anyway, now to share what I am looking for in a forever family. My top 3 things are 1. they will love me forever (of course) 2. they will take me on walks and spend lots of time with me and 3. they will have cool toys and snacks at their house (I mean a girl knows what she likes). Thanks for considering me! Kisses- Gloria 8/30 I'm still here can you believe it? I'm available and looking to be your forever! Pick me, pick me! 7/24 Gloria checking in. She went to an event yesterday and enjoyed every minute! She was the official meeter and greeter at the store. She checked with each person coming into the store. If she didn't get them checked in she made sure to stop them on the way out. She met a family with several kids and did wonderful with all. She got to meet the resident cats through the cages, she sniffed and walked away with no interest at all. She was good with all of the dogs at the event as well as the dogs coming into the store. She is wonderful girl looking for forever! 6/25 Gloria is doing awesome! She went to hang out with another foster while her foster mom was out of town for a week. She fit in nicely with multiple dogs, all ages and sizes. Her temp foster said that she worked out really well with the pack at her house. She loved playing with all of toys and enjoyed her time away at camp. Gloria enjoys making a nest to sleep/nap in. Other then toys her second favorite thing is tossing pillows and fluffing the bed for a perfect nap time and spot. She is looking for forever and would love to be in a home for the summer! 5/29 We can't believe that Gloria is still available! She has been patiently waiting for someone to see what a gem she really is. She has so much love to offer and just wants a home of her very own. 5/23 Gloria is a wonderful girl who has been with us a little over 3 months. She has been out to several events and done wonderful at each one. She is good with other dogs, people and has been good around kids of all ages at events. She has turned it to quite the sweet girlie. She enjoys spending time with her people and pack most of all. She loves toys rope toys and tug of war toys seem to be her current favorites. She is a perfect girl just looking for a forever home. Could it be with your family? 4/16 Gloria came into ACCT after having at least 1 litter of puppies, she was brought up to date on shots and spayed. She has now had some time to decompress and show us what a wonderful girl she really is. She enjoys meeting new people and dogs, walks of any kind and snuggles are her favorite! 3/5 Gloria arrived to rescue about 2 weeks ago from ACCT Philadelphia. She is wonderful, sweet girl looking for a forever home. She loves walks, car rides and snuggling. Please consider making her part of your family today!

She really loves her people and would really like to have her own person once again that she could enjoy walking with and then laying at their feet. She is a real sweetheart who really deserves her own home to enjoy her senior years. Could it be yours? Apply at mostlymuttz.org! Babe wonders why she hasn't found her forever. She doesn't need much, a soft bed, walks in the park, time in the yard. She loves to be outside and enjoys time spent with her people.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Gypsy is a 5 year old heartworm positive lab mix who made the long trip with the others from SC. You may remember her puppies, the G litter, who needed to be bottle fed so that she could begin heart worm treatment. Gypsy was spayed and began treatment in her new foster home. Gypsy is a shy but sweet loving girl on the path to be as healthy as she is beautiful. She is less stressed but a little nervous around men - we are working on that with her. She just really wants to sit in your lap and be loved! Gypsy is all done with her heartworm treatment, she is healthy, happy, active and eager to find her forever. She is still a little nervous with anything new and very nervous with men. After all this girl has been through before coming into rescue who could blame her for being nervous. She just needs love and patience and you will not be disappointed with the wonderful dog that is under that shyness. Could you give her a chance?

      Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Dachshund / Mixed (short coat). Zoey is a wonderful senior girl who makes a perfect companion dog. She likes to follow her foster mom around the house and wags almost constantly! Being older, Zoey is quiet and laid back, but she does have a spunky side and will join in with her foster siblings when they play. She does well with most dogs, but prefers not to have a high energy dog in her face; she will bark at the dog to let them know. Zoey's favorite activities cover both extremes - she loves laying on the couch but she also loves going for walks. Zoey is overweight so she is currently on a diet and daily exercise regimen. She has already lost a few pounds, and her foster mom is noticing a more alert, energetic, happy Zoey! Weight loss is a big deal for Zoey - as she loses weight, her diabetes will be better controlled. She gets insulin injections twice a day with her meals, but she wants you to know that it doesn't bother her at all. Her foster mom is a nurse so she can teach you how to do it! Also, due to the diabetes, Zoey cannot have very many snacks throughout the day. She doesn't seem to mind this at all, because when her foster siblings get a treat she gets extra kisses and snuggles! Upsate 8/29-- Zoey has been very playful over the past couple of weeks! She continues to follow her foster mom around, but she now does it with a spring in her step, and sometimes a playful grumble. She also enjoys bouncing around with a fellow foster, Kindra, who is small like her. Zoey is also showing her foster mom how well she listens when told "stay". She will stop dead in her tracks if she hears the word, even if it is directed at one of her siblings! There's a little bit of stubborn in this girl when you ask her to sit. She knows how to do it but prefers to do it on her own time; how much can one ask of a little spunky old lady?! She thinks "stay" is plenty! Zoey has lot some weight which helps with her diabetes stay controlled. This sweet senior girl is easy going. loving playful and just an all around good girl! She does require her insulin shots twice a day but she is an absolute angel for it and her diabetes doesn't stop her in anyway from enjoying life!!!
