Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Amber Ortiz (talia8621@aol.com) for more information about this pet. The Helotes Humane Society is a non profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted animals in loving homes. Remember, don't shop, adopt! Need a pocket pup? That’s Lucy. All 7 pounds of her. She loves cuddling and sleeping with kids! She likes walks, playing with other dogs and following you around the house. Lucy is very mellow and enjoys just hanging out. She is about 2 years old. If you would like more information on how to adopt Lucy, please call her foster Mom at: 210-274-2283 All of our animals receive vaccinations, testing and altering appropriate for their age. All pets will be microchipped prior to placement. The pet overpopulation problem has reached a crisis stage. We will use all of our resources to spay and neuter all pets in our care.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). The Helotes Humane Society is a non profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted animals in loving homes. Remember, don't shop, adopt! Chihuahua Hi, my name is Yolanda, but they call me Yolo (You Only Live Once). I'm a Chiweenie--you do know, we make the best friends. My foster mom tells me that I am beautiful (pleasingly plump, though), I am smart, and I am a love bug. She wouldn't lie. Humans who don't know me think I have an attitude. I'm just afraid. It takes me about a week to trust a human who is caring for me, and THEN, I shower 'em with love. Temporarily, I am an official 'Office Dog' so that I can improve my social skills. I like my crate and do OK with that potty business. If you're single (no kids please) and live in cozy home with a fenced yard, my foster mom takes all my calls. All of our animals receive vaccinations, testing and altering appropriate for their age. All pets will be microchipped prior to placement. The pet overpopulation problem has reached a crisis stage. We will use all of our resources to spay and neuter all pets in our care.

Remember, don't shop, adopt! My name is Arizona! I am a happy, active and sweet 18 month old female Retriever/Shepard mix. I was abandoned by my owner on a busy street . I get along with most polite dogs my size, but no cats! I would do best starting out as a single dog so we can work on potty, leash, obediance training and later on my adopter can let me pick out my fur sibling. I love hanging out with humans. I am crate trained and working on my leash training. I love toys and bones to chew on. I will need daily walks and an active family. I have to be adopted to someone without breed restrictions and willing to have me for 15 + years. I am not an apartment dog! For more info contact Foster parent at kzyrnr17@yahoo.com. Posted Breed: Staffordshire Bull Terrier / Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Please contact Geri Coleman (gericoleman@aol.com) for more information about this pet. The Helotes Humane Society is a non profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted animals in loving homes. Remember, don't shop, adopt! staffordshire terrier/lab mix Pun (also known to his foster family as Poe) is one special guy. He came to HHS as an owner surrender due to the fact that his owner had a change in his life and could no longer keep this boy. As sad as that was, Pun was a trooper. He went from being an only dog, into a foster home with some very bossy dogs(while always keeping his sweet nature). He was diagnosed with heart worms shortly after and began his treatment. He has since battled some other respitory issues. He has been with his foster family for almost a year now and has been cleared for adoption. Where ever he goes, people comment on what a sweet boy he is with such a calm demeanor. This boy is one big, sweet, loveable guy! As one might decipher, his foster family has become very attatched to him. He has excellent house manners in that he is housebroken, crate trained, does not chew on anything other than his toys and seems to hang out where ever his bed might be (he currently uses a dog door but don't foresee any issues with adjusting). Pun does very well on and off leash. He would make an excellent candidate as a therapy dog for visiting nursing homes and such. He is up to date on shots, on monthly heart worm and flea preventative. He is also microchipped. He is approximately 4yrs old. All of our animals receive vaccinations, testing and altering appropriate for their age. All pets will be microchipped prior to placement. The pet overpopulation problem has reached a crisis stage. We will use all of our resources to spay and neuter all pets in our care.

Posted Breed: Corgi / Mixed (medium coat). The Helotes Humane Society is a non profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted animals in loving homes. Remember, don't shop, adopt! Diego was found as a stray and picked up by good Samaritans . He had what appeared to be a large wound on his side. Upon further examination it was determined to be a skin cancer lesion. It was successfully removed and Diego recovered at the Helotes Humane Society. He is now completely healed and ready for adoption. Diego likes to be the leader of the pack. He would do best as the only dog, no kids and no cats! He would make a good "indoor/outdoor" dog as he does enjoy the company of his people but also enjoys yard time. He would make a great pet for a retired person or someone who is home all the time. If you are looking for an easy going companion who just wants a quiet place to chill, Diego is your boy. Posted Breed: Husky / Yellow Labrador Retriever (short coat). The Helotes Humane Society is a non profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted animals in loving homes. Remember, don't shop, adopt! Brady is a wonderful dog for adults! He will need an active adopter with a house with a yard without cats, dogs and children! No apartments! He is strong and very energetic and would do great with someone who will take him for lots of walks, runs, or other outdoor excursions. He is very loving and will snuggle and give kisses. He has been an indoor dog and is house trained and crate trained. When left home alone, he has no problem staying in his crate with his pillow, toy, and bone. Brady has shown food and toy aggression with children and other dogs, so he needs a home without children and where he can be the only animal. He has not shown aggression toward the adults in his life, loves to have balls or sticks thrown for him, and is very gentle when taking treats from your hand. All of our animals receive vaccinations, testing and altering appropriate for their age. All pets will be microchipped prior to placement. The pet overpopulation problem has reached a crisis stage.
