Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). The Helotes Humane Society is a non profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted animals in loving homes. Remember, don't shop, adopt! Nikki was picked up on the streets of San Antonio as a stray. It was obvious when she got into foster care that she hadn't had much interaction with people. She feels very comfortable with other dogs however. She is slowly learning that people can be pretty nice, especially ones with treats! Nikki weighs 10 lbs and is very portable. She is learning about how to ride in a doggy booster seat in the car. Nikki needs a home that will be patient with her and help her become more confident. She enjoys the company of other dogs her own size. She seems fine with cats. The perfect home for her would be a single active retired person or couple. If you'd like to learn more about Nikki, please call , email or text me. 210-218-0835. info@hhsanimals.org All of our animals receive vaccinations, testing and altering appropriate for their age. All pets will be microchipped prior to placement. The pet overpopulation problem has reached a crisis stage. We will use all of our resources to spay and neuter all pets in our care.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Labrador Retriever-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Baby
      Location: Helotes, TX
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Geri Coleman (gericoleman@aol.com) for more information about this pet. The Helotes Humane Society is a non profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted animals in loving homes. Remember, don't shop, adopt! Male lab mix Cody is a spunky, happy little guy who is about 9 weeks old (DOB is 12/23/2016). Helotes Humane Society was able to save Cody and 18 other small pups from a hoarding situation. He is now thriving (and spoiled) in his current foster home. Because of the large number of pups saved, it is unclear who his parents were. He appears to be a Labrador mix and will likely weigh between 35-50lbs when fully grown. Cody is typical of any pup as he is exploring his surroundings and doing a bit of chewing. He is a fast learner in that he knows to go potty when he goes outside. He has already learned to come in using the doggy door(hasn't mastered going out yet). Cody is scheduled to be neutered in mid March where he will also be microchipped. At that time he will be available for adoption. His adoption fee is $150.00. If interested, please contact his foster mom at Gericoleman@aol.com. All of our animals receive vaccinations, testing and altering appropriate for their age. All pets will be microchipped prior to placement. The pet overpopulation problem has reached a crisis stage. We will use all of our resources to spay and neuter all pets in our care.

Posted Breed: Doberman Pinscher (short coat). The Helotes Humane Society is a non profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted animals in loving homes. Remember, don't shop, adopt! Evie was found abandoned and tied to a park bench at a local church. She had obviously had many puppies in her lifetime. She is at least 6 years old and came to us with heartworms, which have been treated. She enjoys the company of people and loves affection. She is definitely not a fan of cats. She could get along with other dogs if they don't try to dominate her. Evie is pretty mellow and loves lying around and playing with stuffed animals. She likes her yard time and her new owners should have secure fencing. Evie is house broken and crate trained but prefers to be close to her people. She is learning commands, like sit, come, etc... Evie will alert you to sounds she hears with a bark, otherwise, she doesn't bark in the house. Evie knows how to walk on a leash but she is strong and pulls. She has come in contact with bicycles, skateboards, and joggers on her walks with no reaction from her. Some of the walkers she comes across, she wants to greet and others she just walks pass them. Evie enjoys her walks and also likes car rides. If you'd like to meet Evie, please call us at 210.422.6242. All of our animals receive vaccinations, testing and altering appropriate for their age.
