Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). The Helotes Humane Society is a non profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted animals in loving homes. Remember, don't shop, adopt! Nikki was picked up on the streets of San Antonio as a stray. It was obvious when she got into foster care that she hadn't had much interaction with people. She feels very comfortable with other dogs however. She is slowly learning that people can be pretty nice, especially ones with treats! Nikki weighs 10 lbs and is very portable. She is learning about how to ride in a doggy booster seat in the car. Nikki needs a home that will be patient with her and help her become more confident. She enjoys the company of other dogs her own size. She seems fine with cats. The perfect home for her would be a single active retired person or couple. If you'd like to learn more about Nikki, please call , email or text me. 210-218-0835. info@hhsanimals.org All of our animals receive vaccinations, testing and altering appropriate for their age. All pets will be microchipped prior to placement. The pet overpopulation problem has reached a crisis stage. We will use all of our resources to spay and neuter all pets in our care.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Pointer-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Helotes, TX
Posted Breed: Pointer / Mixed (short coat). The Helotes Humane Society is a non profit organization dedicated to placing unwanted animals in loving homes. Remember, don't shop, adopt! Dearest Briar Rose (a.k.a. Sweet Bree) is as sweet and friendly, playful and affectionate as can be. Once she gets to know you she is your best friend! But she came with apparently very scary experiences in her history and she has a very fearful nature. It will take her some time and you lots of patience to become comfortable with her new family, but once she does she is loyal and exceptionally friendly. Her most favorite thing to do is walk up and lean on her foster mom and wait for a bear hug around her whole body! She is solid LOVE !!! We don't have experience with her with children, but we suspect she will get along with calm and respectful kids once she gets to know them. She might even be good with very small children because of their smaller size, but definitely not sure about that at this time. Bree is very playful and would love to have another young and friendly dog to play with in their fenced-in yard. She will thrive with someone that is sensitive and understanding of a fearful nature. Bree is crate trained, house trained and playful with other friendly dogs. She is spayed, heart worm negative, fully vaccinated and current on all preventatives. She is 1-2 years old and around 65 lbs. As she fills out she may be about 75 lbs at a healthy weight. To meet sweet Bree, or even arrange to go for a walk with Bree and her foster mom in the Helotes area, go to http://hhsanimals.org/pet-adoption-information/ to complete an application. You may email it to spiritdog1@me.com. All of our animals receive vaccinations, testing and altering appropriate for their age. All pets will be microchipped prior to placement. The pet overpopulation problem has reached a crisis stage. We will use all of our resources to spay and neuter all pets in our care.

Diego was found as a stray and picked up by good Samaritans. He had what appeared to be a large wound on his side. Upon further examination it was determined to be a skin cancer lesion. It was successfully removed and Diego recovered at the Helotes Humane Society. He is now completely healed and ready for adoption. Diego likes to be the leader of the pack. He would do best as the only dog. He would make a good "indoor/outdoor" dog as he does enjoy the company of his people but also enjoys yard time. He would make a great pet for a retired person or someone who is home all the time. If you are looking for an easy going companion who just wants a quiet place to chill, Diego is your boy.
