Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Paula (pjstoppler@msn.com) for more information about this pet. Dash reached rescue in a round-about way. He was rescued the first time, as a tiny 8 week old puppy - being sold at a garage sale for 5 bucks. Three little puppies were stuffed in a guinea pig cage and offered up for sale. Two of the puppies were immediately sold. An animal lover, and Good Samaritan, couldn't bear to see this little dog being given to any one that had a five dollar bill in his pocket, and although she had 3 dogs at home, she took this one, too. She still worries about what happened to the other tiny pups. It didn't appear that the puppies had been socialized very well. Dash was very shy, but once he warmed up to the family, everything was good. However, this busy family still had 3 dogs and this little busy Chihuahua seemed to require much more attention than the older ones. Reluctantly, with tears in their eyes, the family that rescued Dash from an unknown future, has decided that he would be happier in another home, where there is not so many other animals, and more attention is devoted to him. He's a big lover, loves sitting on your lap, and this busy family just doesn't have the time for this love-bug. Dash is crate trained; in fact. he looks forward to going into his crate at night; it's his man-cave:) He's neutered, current on his vaccinations, and will be microchipped prior to rehoming. He's now a friendly, happy dog, but still a bit on the shy side. He gets along OK with older children, who respect his small size and treat him gently. Dash is an athletic little guy; can jump and scale a 4' fence if there's something/someone on the other side that grabs his attention. A fenced yard is imperative. d If you would like to complete our Adoption Application, please do so! If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Age: Senior
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Pekingese / Chihuahua. Please contact Paula (pjstoppler@msn.com) for more information about this pet. Kenai and Dottie were adopted 14 years ago, tiny littermates. Daddy was a purebred Pekingese, Momma was Japanese Chin/Chihuahua. They lived the next 13 years in Alaska with their beloved owner, who doted on them and considered them her furkids. Then tragedy struck, and their owner passed away, leaving these two gentle little dogs alone. They were brought to Washington, and found a temporary home with family, but the home is just that: temporary. These little pups need a permanent home, a quiet environment, where they have live out their Golden Years. They are experiencing skin problems, as they have no immunity toward fleas. (fleas can't live in snow :) With some good quality food, and regular applications of flea control, these two will be gorgeous again very soon. Dottie is still looking for her Forever Home. UPDATE: Kenai has been adopted. Dottie is still looking for her retirement home. If you would like to complete our Adoption Application, please do so! Jack is a happy, intelligent, athletic little dog who needs an experienced JRT owner, one who understands how to train this little smarty-pants. Jack has a mind of his own, and unless trained properly, won't be a very welcome addition to your home. They are a busy dog, and get bored easily. According to Dogtime.com: "If you want a dog who can learn tricks, run an agility or flyball course in seconds flat, play fetch until you drop, and who will make a charming companion when he's not getting into mischief, the Jack Russell may be the dog for you. If you can't deal with a dog who will chew, dig, and bark, rocket through the house multiple times daily, chase cats and other small animals with glee and murderous intent, and will always find the loophole in any command you give, he's definitely not the dog for you, no matter how cute and small he is. She lost "her man" suddenly, and she has been lost ever since. Her beloved owner died suddenly, and Molly was placed in a foster home with a senior lady. But she just moped around. The only time she perked up was when a senior gentleman came to call. Then Molly would get excited and dance around. She needs another senior gentleman to complete her world. She's a tiny girl, only weighs about 10 pounds. She is about 14 years old, spayed, current on vaccinations and microchipped. She will make a wonderful companion to a senior gentleman. Posted Breed: Pomeranian / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Paula (pjstoppler@msn.com) for more information about this pet. Three adorable little dogs who, through no fault of their own, are in need of new retirement homes. They will be neutered on October 24, brought current on their vaccinations, including Rabies, and microchipped. You can meet them now, and pre-adopt so that once they have their surgery, they will be ready for their new homes. Jet is a 9 year old PomChi who is a little shy when meeting new people, and warms up and and will seek out your lap for snuggling. He gets along with other small dogs. He does not like large dogs, however, or cats. Really doesn't like cats. He has lost most of his teeth because he didn't have any dental care when he was younger, and appreciates soft food rather than hard kibble. He's not a playful dog; he takes his place in the family very seriously; he will bark to let you know when someone is at the door. That face! Isn't he adorable? Chewy is a 12 year old senior Shih Tzu/Doxie mix. He's a playful boy, surprising in light of his age, and he really loves balls. He's a bit protective of his family; he wouldn't be a good match in a family with small children or cats. He's a bit of a grumpy old man, and we think his best placement would be with a senior citizen or a quiet home. Johann Sebastian Bach is a 5 year old purebred Lhasa Apso. This photo was taken before his visit to the spa. He's a special needs pup; he appears to have some minor neurological problems. He will sometimes walk into a glass sliding door. He occasionally walks in circles. But he's so adorable! He's a big time snuggler. Loves everyone he meets, children included. He will require some extra vigilance in keeping him safe, but he's worth it ! He's intimidated by large dogs, but does OK with small ones. He's not too sure of cats. Posted Breed: Mastiff / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Paula (pjstoppler@msn.com) for more information about this pet. Bella is a young dog, about 2 years old, who has lived the majority of her life on the street with her guardian, who was also without a home. Bella became homeless when her guardian was arrested and jailed. Her future was really up in the air. She had no one to advocate for her, no place that she could hang out and be safe. Thankfully, she was signed over to rescue to find a stable environment for her. She is a very social girl, meets new people easily. Loves attention. Because of her size (100#), she shouldn't be placed in a home with other dogs; she's still a puppy herself, and puppy-play could injure a smaller animal. Bella is spayed, current on her vaccinations, and microchipped. She's ready for her permanent Forever Home. If you would like to complete our Adoption Application, please do so! Callie is a playful high-energy girl with an athlete's body. She is muscular, with not an ounce of fat on her. This girl keeps in shape :) Her favorite type of exercise? Playing fetch. She'll fetch anything you throw, weather it's a ball or a stick or a rawhide chew. She'll wear you out! Callie is a social girl, who has the biggest grin on her face when she's happy: her entire face becomes transformed in her "happy grin." Her tongue lolls uncontrollably out of her mouth, and her lips take up her entire face :) she looks like a goofy cartoon character when she smiles. Such a funny girl. We think the best home for Callie would be with an active family. Callie would be an excellent jogging partner, or your best buddy as you're hiking the North Cascades or exploring the Pacific Northwest.
