Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Dear Forever Person/Persons, I know you've been looking for me, and I've been looking for you!! I've got my bag packed and I'm ready to come home! I even put on a fancy good luck tie just hoping it might help us find each other :) . I'm Jerry a healthy short-hair Chi mix! I love to sleep under the covers with you, and love taking walks! I require a special diet but goodness knows, I love to eat! I currently live with a bunny and we both like carrots! I am also good with dogs and cats. I weigh about 12 lbs, and best guess is that I'm around 10-12 years old - don't let my age make you question me though - I've got plenty of spunk and years left - you'll see! Even though I'm so excited to meet you, come home, and love you, I just ask for a little patience - moving from my foster to forever home could just take me a minute to get used to. I'm ready and excited to meet you, forever person! I love you already! See you soon! Jerry xoxo Every Underdog has been spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, flea/tick treated, de-wormed, and received rabies, bordetella and distemper/parvo vaccines. All dogs have had a recent visit to the vet as well. Jerry's adoption fee is $200 We offer a 10% discount for seniors, veterans and students. All of our dogs are in foster homes. If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Lhasa Apso / Mixed. Meet Zelda, an absolutely adorable little low rider girl around 2 yrs. old and 14 lbs. Maybe a Lhasa Apso mix? She has the best smile and tail wag. She is such a love. She can be fearful and shy unless paired with another friendly and confident dog around her same size. For this reason her BEST FIT will be in a home with another dog who can help her be brave. While Zelda has the whole cuteness thing completely covered, what she needs is someone who has the time and patience to work with her on building trust and basic training. She loves walks and her leash skills are improving, but still need a little more work. House training is going well, as long as she is consistently taken outside. She is very food motivated, which is helping a lot in her training. She is not happy about being crated, but will sleep in her crate at night without too much fuss. She becomes a shadow to whoever she attaches to and doesn’t like to be separated from them. She would not do well if left alone for extended periods of time. She does great in the car. Loves belly rubs. Not sure about cats, but has shown herself to be a small animal chaser on walks. She has a medium energy level. Does really well energy wise if given a morning walk and some play sessions throughout the day. Zelda is currently being treated for an allergen response (itching). This may be due to stress and environment changes. Best case scenario her immune system will kick in and the allergen response will disappear. Worst case scenario she will need on going treatment to keep the itching under control. No way to know, except to wait and see. If you think you would be interested in meeting this sweetheart, be sure to complete an Underdog Railroad Rescue adoption. Posted Breed: Poodle (Toy) / Terrier / Mixed. Hello world I'm Jarvis! I'm a 1 year old, 10 pound black toy poodle. I just arrived and I'm pretty cautious of new people. I need to learn proper interaction skills with people, so no kids for me at this time. I can be a little excitable and energetic. Some dog are ok with that and some are not. Not sure about cats. I'm now in the care of a foster who will work with me and help me blossom! So stay tuned as I progress and blossom! Posted Breed: Miniature Schnauzer / Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (medium coat). Stevie here. I am a Schnauzer/ Poodle mix boy around 3 Yrs. Old and 22 pounds. I sure was a mess at the shelter, I was super skinny, I had demox mange (non contagious) and was losing my beautiful coat, I had an ear infection and an eye infection too. Everyone walked by my cage and didn't give me a second look. To top it off I was really scared too. I didn't stand much of chance of being adopted. Then Underdog came to save me! Now I'm in Portland in a loving foster home. I'm getting better everyday. I'm learning to trust people, and I within just a few weeks, I'm doing so great! I'm still skinny, but I've gained weight already, and my hair is starting to grow back. My ears and eyes are all better too! I'm really a funny, loving boy and I just love to play with my foster mama. I love to snuggle and I have a great appetite and I'm treat motivated for sure! I'm learning basic commands, walking on a leash and I'm potty pad trained and I'm learning to go outside for potty time too! I sleep really well in my crate and I don't make a sound at night. I do well at home alone too. I'd do best in a home without small kids. I'm okay with dogs as long as they aren't too high energy, and I haven't met a cat yet so I'm not sure how I would do with one. I do know I'm going to make someone a very loyal and loving companion. Is it you? Stevie's Adoption fee is $380 We offer a 10% discount for seniors, veterans and students. Posted Breed: Poodle (Miniature) / Mixed (medium coat). Hello- allow me to introduce myself. I am Mr. Jingles and am around 2 yrs old. I am in need of an experienced Foster or Foster to Adopt person who will work with me on impulse control. And, who can take things slow with me because I can be a little shy. Could you be the one to help give me a chance? Although I look a little rough around the edges, I just need a little TLC to blossom into the adorable love bug I know I can be. Posted Breed: Miniature Schnauzer / Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet adorable Hurley! Hurley is 6 years old and around 15 pounds. Hurley was left at a local shelter on a freezing cold morning in a crate at the end of the shelters driveway. Hurley wasn't able to walk on his hind legs. The shelter took X-rays and found no broken bones or spinal damage and after some rest Hurley is now walking and he is improving each day. He is almost back to 100% and his gait is amost back to normal now. Hurley wasn't doing well in the shelter atmosph ere and needed a foster home and a rescue who could work with him. You see Hurley is a bit fearful at first when he is in a new environment and can nip. Its like PTSD really. Therefore we are working with him to get through his fears. Hurley will do well in a home without children or cats. He likes other dogs, loves walks and his squeaky toys. He is house trained and walks well on a leash. He does like to snuggle once he trusts no one is going to hurt him. A seasoned dog person would be best for dear Hurley to continue the training he is currently getting in foster. Every Underdog has been spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, flea/tick treated, de-wormed, and received rabies, bordetella and distemper/parvo vaccines.
