Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Shownes for more information about this pet. Hi!!! My name is Cooter and I am a sweet man. My foster mommy loves me so much and I love her because she hugs me and cuddles me a lot. I had a happy life with my owner until my owner died. I had a companion dog and we found ourselves in the animal shelter. I was scared because I didn't understand what was happening. My companion dog got moved to adoptions. I was so scared that they did not move me. I was lonely and didn't know what was going to happen to me. Why was I so disposable once the owner I loved died? Well, this nice lady came along and saw how afraid I was and she brought me home to live with her and other foster dogs until I can find my next furever home. I am a good boy. I am approximately 5 years old and just want to sit beside my owner and cuddle. My face looks like I am always worried, but I am always ok as long as my owner is around. I am house broken and really just LOVE being with my human. I would be a perfect fur baby for an older person who wants to have someone to watch tv with. I promise to give my new human more love than they can imagine. My foster mother says I am such a good boy and I deserve a nice home with my very own human.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Rey

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Rey is a lovely, affectionate dog who loves sitting on a lap and being cuddled. She is a timid dog, and can be very shy around new people, particularly men. However, once she bonds with her person (though this will take time and patience), she is very loyal and affectionate. Due to her timidity, she will require plenty of time, space, and patience to get accustomed to her new environment, which might take a few weeks. She gets on very well with other dogs, and would likely do best in an environment where she can have a friend to play with. Rey also is very adept at climbing out of wire or chain link fences - a wooden fence is a must to ensure she can't climb out and go exploring!

Posted Breed: Boxer / Black Mouth Cur / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $150.00. I am a very sweet and beautiful girl! I like to play with my toys and if you don't close your sock drawer all the way I love to play a game I invented called "Empty The Sock Drawer". Maybe I can show you how to play sometime? I have ALOT of energy that foster Mom helps me get out with a backpack! I have a VERY important job of "plant watering expert" because I carry bags with water in my backpack to help feed all the thirsty plants along the paths! I'm kinda important like that. I like to meet new friends too! I make friends wherever I go whether it's the dog park, the pet store or just running along with my foster Mom! On rainy days I get to borrow my foster sisters rain jacket and after we go for walkies I get to do the TREADMILL! I am also the BEST CUDDLER EVER. Seriously. I should get an award. I'm THAT good at cuddling. I like to give kisses and crawl all over you if you try to take a nap too! I'm a pretty quiet gal except when I want to play and my sister wants to take nap. I don't enjoy the kennel but I'll go in if you insist. I can be a little skittish with new people so I need somebody who is patient and will help me work through my insecurities. Do you like cuddles and kisses? If you do then we will be a great match! Call me sometime! (And by call me I mean e-mail my foster Mom) Love, Treasure (aka Luv Puppy)

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $150.00. Please contact Rhame for more information about this pet. Russell is an extremely shy, neutered, 1 year old little boy. His shyness can be a lot to deal with if you are not an experienced dog owner. He needs a very patient pet owner that has experience with shy dogs. He has been known to bolt from new people until he's comfortable. He is about 12 pounds and loves to run and play and just be near his person once he gets to know you. He loves other dogs of all sizes, not sure about cats. He needs some time and patience to adjust to his new home and you will have to earn his trust. He'd do best in a home where someone can be around to help with his transition and for bonding purposes. An ideal home for Russell would be a single person home or a couple who spends most of their time at home. Another dog would be good to help him feel more secure although he'd be okay as an only dog. Not kids please! He needs a calm quiet environment. And he is micro chipped. Please consider giving this sweet boy the forever home he deserves.

Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Petrie for more information about this pet. Light HW+ May is a minx! But very sweet. She was supposed to go on transport but unfortunately tested lightly positive for heartworm. We are doing the slow kill method on her by making sure she gets her heartworm prevention every single month. She should be good to go in just a handful of months. She is very active and loves to play with the other dogs. She can be bossy but only in a roughhouse way. She is so funny with those big ears when she lies in wait to pounce on her playmate. A companion dog would need to be able to hold its own. May can be a little reactive to a dog she does not know, but it doesn't take long to consider him or her the next playmate. She is smart and loves her toys and people. She is not food aggressive with other dogs. She could use a more time on the leash and preferably a harness. Her trachea seems a little sensitive to just a collar. When a playmate is going away from her, she tries her best to get to them. May is 99% housetrained. She is not in a house. During the day she plays out in a yard, but at night she is in an indoor/outdoor kennel for up to 12 hours. She doesn't do her business until she is let out. She could be a roamer, so a fence would be needed, but once she knows you as home, she will come back. May does like to jump up and hug you with her legs. The hugs and kisses are lovely, but the jumping up might not work with small children. Or with you, but she could easily be trained out of that if you'd rather forego the hugs. May would make a great family dog and love to come to your fur-ever home!

Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog. Please contact Piotter for more information about this pet. Echo was in a litter rescued from a local shelter. She is the only one in the litter that has not yet been adopted. Echo was a puppy fence climber. Some pups quickly learn to navigate the puppy pen wiring and are able to climb to the top and jump down to freedom! These are typically 24-36". Little did we know that she was such a tomboy she would not back down from a 6' fence! Unfortunately her landing on the other side was not a soft one and she fractured her hind leg. She has had x-rays and had to be in a splint (fortunately bones were still in alignment). She is now out of the split but needs about 2 more weeks to fully recover. She doesn't let this interfere with her puppyhood as you might imagine. Sweet, good with other pets, crate trained and working on potty training, she'll be a good as new very soon and her fence climbing days are over!

Posted Breed: Corgi / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: $150.00. Please contact Petrie for more information about this pet. Angel is a very playful girl! She loves her people but needs consistency. She is almost never mouthy now but still likes to jump when excited. I think its because she is short and wants to make you see her, but she will sit when told. Someone who is firm and does not allow her to do that will have great success with this great girl. She is a Corgi mix which is a breed that likes to boss the other dogs. Not usually an issue for my other fosters. Most of the time this is a very playful group in spite of Angel's bossiness. She has beautiful eyes and is housetrained. She does great in a crate with her chew toys. She needs the toughest chew toys you can find. Since she is still chewing, I would definitely crate her when you are not home. Angel is a happy girl but needs her people's attention. She wants to curl up next to you or sit in your lap. She loves her toys and will carry them around. She always seems to be smiling. She is not good with children. Mostly because she is protective of her adult people and doesn't care for a lot of chaos. She is leash trained and rides well in the car. In fact, she loves to ride in the car. She is up-to-date on vacs and she is spayed. She is barkie/growly/protective at people she does not know, especially in a crate, but she overcomes that quickly due to her loving and playful nature, especially if given the space to come to you! She would make a great dog for the right forever family!

Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact McNeely for more information about this pet. Lucy is a sweet mama dog that had 9 babies in MCAS and was doing the best that she could in a stressful situation. Lucy is/was a great mama to her puppies and passes that watchful eye and protecting nature on the other dogs in her pack too. She feels that all the dogs around her are hers to watch out for and take care of -- she is very protective. This protective quality also extends to her/your home - she will help keep strangers out. In her down time Lucy is just a big couch potato who loves hanging out with her people and chilling. I do not know what her life was like before the shelter but I believe it was pretty rough. One look in her eyes and you can tell that for yourself - she has one eye that is a little cloudy and that slightly affects her vision but it does not slow her down! Lucy is house trained and dog door trained. She is heartworm negative and up to date on all her shots. She is not so great on a leash and pulls especially when she wants something. She knows sit but that is about as far as her knowledge of commands go. Cat - well they are just toys that run right? Seriously, she likes to follow the cat and if the cat runs she will chase but she has not tried to harm her once. It is just the running that catches her attention.
