Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Shownes for more information about this pet. Hi!!! My name is Cooter and I am a sweet man. My foster mommy loves me so much and I love her because she hugs me and cuddles me a lot. I had a happy life with my owner until my owner died. I had a companion dog and we found ourselves in the animal shelter. I was scared because I didn't understand what was happening. My companion dog got moved to adoptions. I was so scared that they did not move me. I was lonely and didn't know what was going to happen to me. Why was I so disposable once the owner I loved died? Well, this nice lady came along and saw how afraid I was and she brought me home to live with her and other foster dogs until I can find my next furever home. I am a good boy. I am approximately 5 years old and just want to sit beside my owner and cuddle. My face looks like I am always worried, but I am always ok as long as my owner is around. I am house broken and really just LOVE being with my human. I would be a perfect fur baby for an older person who wants to have someone to watch tv with. I promise to give my new human more love than they can imagine. My foster mother says I am such a good boy and I deserve a nice home with my very own human.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Mostly house trained, may have a few accidents until she gets your routine of going outside. Very affectionate, loves hugs, having her head rubbed and snuggling. Older children instead of small would be good. She just wants to be loved and would make someone a wonderful addition to the family.

      Location: The Woodlands, TX
Posted Breed: Basset Hound / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Petrie for more information about this pet. Angel is a very playful girl! She loves her people but needs consistency. She can be mouthy but less and less and likes to jump when excited. Someone who is firm and does not allow her to do that will have great success with this great girl. Keep in mind she is just over a year and still needs some training. She knows how to sit and is working on a down/rollover mix. She is a Corgi mix which is a breed that likes to boss the other dogs. Not usually an issue for my other fosters. Most of the time this is a very playful group in spite of Angel's bossiness. She has beautiful eyes and is housetrained. She does great in a crate with her chew toys. She needs the toughest chew toys you can find. Since she is still chewing, I would definitely crate her when you are not home. Angel is a happy girl but needs her people's attention. She wants to curl up next to you or sit in your lap. She loves her toys and will carry them around. She always seems to be smiling. She is not good with children. Mostly because she is protective of her adult people and doesn't care for a lot of chaos. She is leash trained and rides well in the car. In fact, she loves to ride in the car. She is up-to-date on vacs and she is spayed. She is barkie/growly/protective at people she does not know, especially in a crate, but she overcomes that quickly due to her loving and playful nature, especially if given the space to come to you! She would make a great dog for the right forever family!

      Sex: Male Male

      Location: The Woodlands, TX
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Harvey has completed his treatment for scabies. He was the least affected (of his siblings) by this illness - so he looks really cute with a good coat of hair. He is very sweet. He will be medium size - I think. He is a mix - who knows? There must be more than one dad in this litter - lots of variety. He has had his first puppy vaccinations and is ready (or nearly ready) for adoption. He has also been treated for worms - so he is a little thin. We are possibly bringing him to the Woodlands on Saturday. FYI - my husband and I found Harvey and his 5 siblings in a ditch on the side of a highway while jogging (no mother dog). These sweet puppies have a tough start - I am hoping they are adopted by truly loving people.

Posted Breed: Boxer / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Please contact McNeely for more information about this pet. I’m a Hunka Love ~ Adopt me for just $14 Feb 1-14! Lucy is a sweet mama dog that had 9 babies in MCAS and was doing the best that she could in a stressful situation. Lucy is/was a great mama to her puppies and passes that watchful eye and protecting nature on the other dogs in her pack too. She feels that all the dogs around her are hers to watch out for and take care of -- she is very protective. This protective quality also extends to her/your home - she will help keep strangers out. In her down time Lucy is just a big couch potato who loves hanging out with her people and chilling. I do not know what her life was like before the shelter but I believe it was pretty rough. One look in her eyes and you can tell that for yourself - she has one eye that is a little cloudy and that slightly affects her vision but it does not slow her down! Lucy is house trained and dog door trained. She is heartworm negative and up to date on all her shots. She is not so great on a leash and pulls especially when she wants something. She knows sit but that is about as far as her knowledge of commands go. Cat - well they are just toys that run right? Seriously, she likes to follow the cat and if the cat runs she will chase but she has not tried to harm her once. It is just the running that catches her attention.
