Posted Breed: Dachshund / Shar Pei / Mixed (short coat). Adoption Fee: 250.00. Owner surrender with lesions and loss of hair. Pupdate 2017 Well, for goodness sakes! I'm still in foster care and it will be a whole three years come August! I am really looking forward to being adopted into a family who won't mind giving me my medication I need. It's very simple, I have 1/2 teaspoon of enzymes put in my kibble every mealtime. I have a strict diet, 3/4 cup of grain free food, top it off with water and my enzymes. Foster mom lets the enzymes incubate for 15 minutes then I can eat it. I eat two meals a day, I can't graze or eat treats because of my EPI. The cost of my enzymes is $18.00 a month and my special food is 22.00 per month. I love other pups, I am fully potty trained and I love to snuggle. I am OK on a leash, sometimes I get so excited I try to pull. I am crate trained and UTD on all my vaccinations and I am microchipped. I would love to go to a family with no other pups or maybe just one. I love attention and want my new home to have time to pay attention to me because I will love you with all my heart and I would hope you will love me too. I do need a fenced yard so I can get the exercise I need to keep my girly body in shape. I love exploring and being outside. My adoption donation is $250.00 8-24-2016 Lilly continues to do well with her medication. She has kept her weight stable for almost a year now and seems quite content. Lilly is now potty trained and will run to the door when she need to relieve herself. Lilly loves all people including young adults. She would love to find her forever home where she will get all the attention she needs. She loves to cuddle and rarely barks and will make a family very proud to call her their baby girl. Lilly needs a securely fenced yard where she can get plenty of exercise. Lilly gets along with all dogs, small and large, a playmate would be ideal for Lilly. Update on Lilly! We are proud to announce that Lilly is on the road to recovery. Although she will be on daily medications for the rest of her life, she will certainly make that ONE certain family a happy-go-lucky pup. Lilly was diagnosed with EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insuffiency), a digestive disorder that can cause devastating starvation. It is a very treatable disease, and successful management can be achieved with the correct balance of treatment (proper enzymes, diet and if needed, B12 and or antibiotics) So far, Lilly has gained back the weight she had lost and continues on a steady road. She will need enzymes in her daily meals to keep her from starving to death. She is happy-go-lucky girlie100% of the time but will need to continue with her enzymes daily. Sept. 7, 2014 Lilly came into rescue on September 6, 2014. Lilly is an owner surrender who was given up because the family could no longer financially care for her. On intake, Lilly had abrasions of unknown origin from her right shoulder, down her spine to her left lower side. She was seen by our vet immediately upon arrival to Beloit. She was given a heart worm test (neg) a fecal float(neg), given her needed vaccinations and seen for her abrasions. Lilly is currently on an oral antibiotic, topical antibiotics and antibiotics for ear infections. Once Lilly is healed, she will have her dental and be microchiped. Lilly is a sweet, loving girl that gets along well with other dogs. She is not leash trained or potty trained but we are currently working with her on these issues. She loves her time outside in our fenced in backyard, running with the wind and flashing her face to the sun. She will make a great pup for any family. Lilly Jilly Bean requires a grain-free diet to maintain her beautiful coat and keep her healthy. Update/10-20-14 Lilly has healed completely! She is a lovely little girl that just wants to please you. She gives great kisses and loves to hug close to your neck. Due to the severity of Lilly's burns, the hair will not be growing back in. Her lovely personality and her warm eyes will capture every beat of your heart. We are still working on potty training her, she has come a long way since she was brought into our rescue. Lilly gets along great with all pups, she loves to play chase with the youngsters. All Lilly Jilly wants is a warm loving home where she will never be tormented and loved for the beautiful little girl she is.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      rescue
      Breed: Papillon-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Papillon / Toy Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 300.00. Pupdate 6-6-2017 This is Rufus. He's a Papillon mix who came to us from a neglect situation. Despite this, Sir Rufus has an incredible outgoing personality and a zest for the outdoors. Although he is five years old, he loves to run and is a high energy pup who will need a fenced in yard. He is also a great companion indoors, where you may catch him napping in his crate, on his favorite pillow, or underneath a table. When he gets bored of a location, he will drag his bed with him to wherever his imagination takes him. He also loves stuffed toys, and carries his beloved Gumby with him throughout the house. He gets along with other dogs with a proper introduction, with older kids (12+), but unknown around cats. He is very vocal when anyone new comes to the house, but after they sit down and allow him to approach, he is quite friendly. He needs much more time to acquaint himself with men. Intake 5-13-2017 Owner surrender, came from a HS in north central Wisconsin. More to follow after Rufus settles in and decompresses. HS observations: Rufus does not like small children, male dogs, thunderstorms or fire crackers. He likes going on walks but needs to learn leash manners. Can be a bit of a resource guarder with his food bowl. Loves toys and cuddling. Will need to be placed in a home with no other dogs or children. He will be neutered and microchipped on May 17th, Rufus visited our vet today and was updated on all vaccinations including Bordatella. Also given a steroid injection because of past flea infestation with hair loss on his lower back. Rufus will need a fenced yard. Adoption fee is $300.00

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu (short coat). Adoption Fee: 250.00. Please contact Cynthia for more information about this pet. Meg Update: Meg is healing well after her extensive dental and extractions. Meg will be getting her spay on December 22, 2017. The Vet requested a lengthy amount of time for Meg to heal completely from her dental before they spay her. Meg is quite a dominant female and we are hoping she will be less dominant once she is spay. Meg will be ready for adoption on January 1, 2018. Hello everybody! Welcome me, Meg, to A Promise of Love! Today is the beginning of my new life. I am a 17 pound, tan and white, 10 ½ year old Shih Tzu. I am a breeder release, which means I spent my whole life making babies. My foster mom tells me that I do not have to do that anymore. That now it is time for me! I am very excited!! I am a friendly little girl, love to be petted, love other dogs, and love my foster mom and dad. The ONLY thing I do not like is to be picked up. That scares me a lot, and I try very hard to get away. This means that I am probably a flight risk, so I will need a secured fenced in yard if you adopt me. No small children please, as they may scare me. Responsible children over 15 would be okay. I am doing pretty good on the potty thing. But still need some work in that area. I will be available for adoption once I get my teeth cleaned, or pulled, as they are pretty bad, and I have my spay. If you would like to donate to my care, that would be just pawsome. Keep an eye on me as you will be seeing quite a bit of me in the future. Noselicks and Kisses, Meg

Posted Breed: Wirehaired Fox Terrier / Yorkshire Terrier Yorkie / Mixed (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 300.00. Update 12/4/2017 I am doing so well in my foster home. I never bark unless it's time to eat and I am potty trained!! I love other pups and will interact with them while playing with toys are balls. I am a snuggle bunny, I love to get way down under the blankets at night to keep foster mom's legs warm. I am doing so well and I am as healthy as a newborn baby. I give the greatest kisses and respond well to the kindness of others. I have not met anyone that I don't like or trust. I'm a very easy going fella! Hi! My name is Taz, but I am not a devil! I was taken into the SWHS originally in July because my owner was homeless. The very next day, my owners friend adopted me. I was surrendered back to the SWHS because of landlord issues. I have been told I have epilepsy because some time before July of 2017, I had a seizure. I have had had NO seizures since. Because of this, I was up for Rescue Only. A Promise of Love grabbed me up so fast, and I couldn't be happier. I am being fostered in a nice warm home with plenty of puppy beds scattered around and good food to eat. I am loved beyond the stars. Foster mom is keeping a close eye on me to figure what kind of home will be the best for me. I am not potty trained but we are working on it. I am afraid to go outside with the other pups, maybe I fear not being able to come in out of the cold? Being homeless again? Anyway, I do wear a belly band while I am indoors. I love my people, I am a bit skittish of other pups, but I cause no danger or harm to them. I am quiet and will retreat to a place where I can rest. I love sleeping in the big bed with my foster mom, I love to burrow under the blankets for a long uninterrupted night of sleep. I have funny eating habits, I like to dump my bowl of food out on the floor, and then gobble it up. I have a great appetite, but I do need to gain a little weight. I am on a great grain free diet of both kibble and canned. I have no interest in toys. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with them! Foster mom is working on that also. She wants me to enjoy life being a pup with no worries. I am leash trained, but I am not crate trained. I love car rides and sit nicely strapped to the seat belt. I come when called and am first to the kitchen when I know it's time for a meal. I love my walks, I am leash trained and love the outdoors as long as someone is by my side at all times. I will require a fenced yard. Once I get used to going outside, I will be exploring the new smells and observing nature. I am neutered, micro chipped and UTD on all of my vaccinations. My adoption fee is $300.00 PS, I have long legs that would make Michael Jordan look short!

Posted Breed: Maltese / Maltese (medium coat). Adoption Fee: $250.00. Autumn and OakLee are a bonded pair and require being adopted together. Since they both love to explore outside, they require a securely fenced back yard. Update 10-01-2016 Hello, My name is Oaklee. I am now 6years and 10 months old who has many wonderful years of love to give. I am a sweet boy once I know you. I am starting to give kisses and play with my human. Since I was a breeder in a puppy mill it took me a while to show love since I was never shown it. Though I am leashed trained, my favorite thing to do outside is run in a fenced yard and bounce like a bunny, which makes my foster parents laugh. l love to exercise, but I am a good, calm boy in the house. I love to sleep next to Autumn inside and coax her to play. I sit nice for my meals when told. Call me and I will come to you. I sit like a champ for ear cleaning, grooming, and baths. I am very patient when being fussed over. I wear a belly band and am dry 50% of the time. I have gone on a pee pad with my belly band on. It may be possible for me to be trained to go on pee pads in a small area for breaks. I do my poop outside all of the time. It does not matter if my new owner is male or female, I will love either one. If you are chosen to adopt us, please give us time to adjust and we will love you whole-heartedly with hand kisses and playful bounces. Much Love, Oaklee Update 09-12-2016 Check out my new professional photos! I am a very handsome boy! Update 6-9-2016 Autumn and Oaklee have been in foster care for just over 6 months. They both have become pretty dependent of each other, trusting their foster mom and are no longer frightened. Update Monday December 7, 2015 OakLee and Autumn have been fostered in the same home for the past four weeks. It has come to the attention of Foster mom and dad that these two pups should not be separated. They rely on one another for cuddles, company and love. At this time, we will not be adopting out Autumn and OakLee separately. They will be looking for a home together. My name is OakLee. I am named after my foster mom's family home. You see, there are 5 big oak trees in the yard. She wanted to name me after them because of the beauty of nature and remembrance. I was in a cage for over 6 years of my life. You would be amazed how happy I am to be free. I love people, love to be pet and love, love, love running outside. I am quite social. Because I came from a puppy mill, my mouth and teeth are a mess. I lost many teeth, but I can tell you that my mouth feels so much better. And smells better too! We will be available for adoption after the 19th of November, 2015. Foster mom says I have to heal real good first before I can go to my forever home. We will be looking for an all adult home, we are very fine boned and need extra special care. We also will need some time to get potty trained, this is a whole new world for us and I hope everyone can be patient with us while we learn. I will also need a fenced in yard, we mill pups have flight issues, and boy, can we escape and run fast!

Update 10-01-2016 Hi, My name is Autumn and I am 6 years and 10 months old. Since I am a small breed dog, I can live a long time. I am a very sweet girl who loves to play with you and kiss your hand. Since I have been fostered, I have learned to walk on a leash. I am not much for running in the yard. I just wish to quickly do my business and come inside to be near you. When you have the time, I love to sit next to you on the couch and be petted. I will give you kisses ‘cause I really appreciate being loved since I was a former mill dog. At mealtime, I will sit nice when told. I eat soft food and clean my dish. Though I wear diaper, I am dry overnight and most of the day. My foster mom feels if I was put in a small room with pee pads for potty breaks that I eventually would not have to go out in the weather. I do enjoy being outside for a bit on the patio. Foster mom takes care to keep me out of the sun to prevent cataracts and off the grass after breaks to prevent fleas. My favorite thing is being near my human and sitting on the couch with her. I favor women, but can get used to a man with patience. The lucky person who adopts us will find that once I warm up to you, that I will bring you great joy and love. Please consider us as your forever friends, much love, Autumn and OakLee Update 09-12-2016 Check out my new professional photos! I am a glamour girl! Update 8-18-2016 Autumn continues to thrive in her foster home. She loves being outdoors in the summer months. Autumn and OakLee are are looking for a family with a fenced in backyard so they can explore yet be safe. Autumn and OakLee's adoption fee is $500.00 for both. They are both UTD on all vaccinations until November of 2016, both just had their dentals, and are HW neg. Update 6-9-2016 Autumn and Oaklee have been in foster care for just over 6 months. They both have become pretty dependent on each other, trusting their foster mom and are no longer frightened. Update Monday December 7, 2015 Autumn and OakLee have been fostered in the same home now for about 4 weeks. It has come to the attention of foster mom that these two should not be separated. They rely on each other for company, cuddles and love. At this time, we will not be adopting out Autumn or OakLee separately. Hellooooooooo! My name is Autumn, just like the day today, crispy and bright. I was named after my foster mum's family home. It's so beautiful there this time of the year. 5 pretty oak trees in the yard with stunning colors. My mate, OakLee is also named after their family home! I came out of a puppy mill. I have given birth to many babies, and well, it was time to be retired. I now live in a super duper home with other pups. I get along well with small pups, I've been around pups all my life. Anyway, for the first time in my life I have had a lovely bath and a warm snuggy bed to sleep in. I am in love being free. I love people and will keep nudging you till you pet me. Foster mom says I'm pretty much socialized, but I need some potty training. I am wearing a pair of panties now, we don't know if I will ever be able to go with out them. You know what people say? Accidents happen! To no fault of my own, I will try to only go potty outside. There are no guarantees in life, but I am a great girl and this should not stop you for putting in an adoption application. Due to my size and fragility, I will need to be in a home with adults only. I will need a fenced in yard so so I can enjoy my freedom. Foster mom has watched me play outside and snoop for holes under the fence. Not to worry, I couldn't go too far, she always has her eye on me and she's pretty quick to pick me up. I don't have many teeth, I had my dental today and most of my teeth were rotted and had to be pulled. I will require a soft diet of grain free food so I can continue on the road to good health. I will be available for adoption on November 19th. I need time to heal and my foster mom needs to learn as much about me as possible to make sure I find the right 'match'.

Posted Breed: Xoloitzcuintle/Mexican Hairless (medium coat). Adoption Fee: 300.00. Pupdate 6-5-2017 Holy Man! Can you believe I have been in foster care almost a full year? Wow, that's a long time! And before I get started telling you all about me, I need to let you know two very important things. #1. I need to be adopted out as a bonded pair with my daughter Taffy. We have been together since her birth and we need to stay together. #2. Taffy and I were raised to hunt squirrels. This is not a laughing matter, we go into a frenzy when we see them. We are so fast, if we are not restrained with a harness and leash or securely fenced back yard, you may never see us again. Ok, glad I got that off my mind. Just want to be straight forward with you. I love to be loved. I give the longest wet kisses of any pup on earth. I will love you every day of my life and I show it in many ways. I am potty trained to do my business outside, I am also paper trained in the house. I love my crate and will gladly go there for my meals or some quiet time. I am a hearty eater and since I've been in foster care my coat has a beautiful sheen to it and has grown a lot. I don't need grooming but I will need a monthly bath to keep me smelling nice and clean. I need more training with my leash. Like I said, if I see one of those critters with the long and fuzzy tails, I am hysterical. Actually Taffy and I sit in front of the sliding glass doors and watch the back yard for hours. Once we see a squirrel, we will screech like there is no tomorrow! Foster mom thought we were really hurt the first time she heard us screech and came running to check on us. Yep, that critter was on the fence tantalizing us. Shame on him! I love sleeping in the big bed with foster momma. I curl up on a pillow next to her. My adoption donation is $300.00 Pupdate 6-17-2016 I have been in foster care for 5 days now, and thank goodness foster mom and dad have discovered that I need to be with my daughter, Taffy in order to be happy. It has been decided that we will be adopted out as a bonded pair so we can live our lives together like it is meant to be. We love all other pups, even big ones and we have no problem playing with the 'big' girls. We sleep in the big bed with foster mom and we are very sound sleepers. Intake June 12, 2016 My name is Tiffin. I am an unusual type of pup called a Coated Xolo. I am very loving and love to give kisses. I am tiny enough to fit in your coat pocket and go with you everywhere! I came from Mexico where my owners took me to the vet to be euthanized. They no longer needed me or my daughter Taffy to be part of their family. A wonderful lady scooped Taffy and I up and took us to her rescue. We have been potty trained, love to go for walks on our leash with our person. We are now at our second foster home looking for our forever families. We would like to stay together, but if that isn't possible, we can find our very own loving forever families. On my way into the USA on the transport, somehow my cornea got scratched. Foster mom took me to the vet first thing this morning so I could have my HW bloodwork checked, my bordatella injection and my eye checked. For the next week I am on special eye drops and internal medications to help me heal faster. I am HW negative, spayed and UTD on all my vaccinations and I am microchipped. I am a beautiful, loving girl that needs a family of my own! PS, Just so you know, I was bred to squirrel hunt, so I need to stay away from them!!!

Then I will tell you about my life. #1. I must be adopted out as a bonded pair with my mom Tiffin. We have been together since the day I was born and momma Tiffin always protects me. If you see my mom, you will see me right beside her. #2. We were raised to hunt squirrels. We both go into a frenzy when we see one or more. If we are not properly harnessed and leashed, or in a securely fenced in yard, we will run and you may never see us again. I am doing extremely well in foster care. My mommy takes good care of me and is my protector. We love other pups, but would like to be the only two pups in your home. We both love attention and give the best kisses. I am potty trained to do my business outside and I am also paper trained in the house. Often times I get so excited outside I forget to do my business and will come into the house and head for the puppy papers. I love toys and have not ever destroyed a toy to this day. I am totally crate trained, eat my meals in my crate and will go there for some quiet time. I sleep in the big bed with foster momma at night, and I lay on a pillow with my mom. I have the most amazing eyes. I can almost see right through people and I know I am beautiful. My little legs are a bit longer than momma Tiffins, but we pretty much look alike. I love my momma and I can't go anywhere without her. I do well in the car, but I do need more training on leash. Too much excitement this time of year with all those fuzzy long tailed critters running about. Foster momma has never seen us catch a squirrel so we won't tell her what we do with them once caught. She won't give us the chance! My adoption donation is $300.00 Pupdate 6-17-2016 I have been in my foster home for five days now. Foster mom thinks it would be best if my mom and I are adopted out as a bonded pair. We are pretty much inseparable and I have been with Tiffin (my mommy) all of my life. If mommy can't see me, she starts crying and searching all over. I am so happy that foster mom and dad have discovered this, we will be together always and forever. My name is Taffy and I'm a very small Coated Xolo. My coloring is remarkable, I am a bowl of ice cream sundae for your eyes! A little bit of this and a little bit of that and you get a beautiful girl like me. I have stunning eyes and a beautiful coat. I get along with other pups, but when it's feeding time, I need to be crated to eat because I just might eat someone else's food and I will let everyone know what my intentions are. I came from Mexico where my previous owners wanted me to be euthanized. They didn't want us anymore. My goodness, I'm only two years old and deserve far better than that!A very nice lady came to my mommy's (Tiffin) and my rescue and saved us from sure death. This nice lady brought us all the way to the United States so we have a better chance of being adopted to a loving family. I love other pups as long as I am introduced to them slowly. I was bred to hunt squirrels, so I need to stay on my leash at all times while I'm out for a walk. I do need a fenced in backyard, and it must be secure. I can jump pretty high and I can run fast! I saw my doctor today, I am HW negative, UTD on all of my vaccinations, spayed and microchipped. I am ready for my forever home! I couldn't possibly be any more healthy than I am now. I love people, I love to give kisses and I make the perfect lap pup. It did take me a small minute to warm up to my foster daddy, but we are inseparable now. No small children for me, I am very fine boned and need older children that can respect my small stature. I'm a lion in a small package!
