Pet Information CONTACT: UHA ADOPTION COORDINATOR SANDRA AT 323-350-7207 OR AT sandraburkhardt07@yahoo.com Description: A5030688 Vernon is a curious 10-year-old dark-chocolate (with white age icing) neutered male Chihuahua and Dachshund mix (aka Chiweenie) who came to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on February 4th as a stray from West Covina. Weighing 9 lbs, Vernon is the perfect plug-and-play dog who will thrive in any type of home. Vernon is great on leash and loves to walk and explore rather than be held. He shows signs of housebreaking and has a moderate energy level. Calm and sweet with other dogs, Vernon would be happy to meet new friends with you on adventures in your neighborhood. Right now, Vernon has a tiny (pink blush) cherry eye (usually easily removed by a vet), but that doesn’t stop him from looking all around and getting to know everyone. He’ll make a great indoor pet and companion for any individual or family (as long as any children know to respect his tiny size).

Overview: The Chiweenie is a mix between the Chihuahua and a Dachshund. This mix makes a good pet in homes with older or no children.
Breed Group: Unspecified
Weight (lbs): 5-15
Height (in): 10-18
Colors: black and brown, fawn, chestnut, silver, sand, black, parti color

Temperament: Chiweenies will get along with older, gentle children. They may not tolerate other dogs or animals well.
Care: The coat needs little care, just bathe as needed.
Training: The Chiweenie responds best to firm, consistent training. They may be difficult to housebreak.
Activity: This breed needs very little exercise.
Country of Origin: Afghanistan
Life Expectancy: 14-16

More About Chiweenie Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Pet Information CONTACT: UHA ADOPTION COORDINATOR JANA AT 857-998-7970 OR AT jana@hope4animals.org Description: A5038784 Henry is a friendly, athletic 4-year-old white male Pit Bull and Dogo Argentino mix who entered the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on March 7th as a stray from West Covina. Weighing 75 lbs, Henry loves to give kisses, wants to exchange touches and be in contact with people, loves to think he’s a lap do g, and can’t stop his tail from wagging. He shows signs of being housebroken, has a medium energy, and passed his shelter-administered temperament test. He knows how to walk on leash, but will benefit from additional training so that he’s fully manageable. He is good with other dogs and can use some guidance there on how to be less exuberant in greeting them. We think Henry will do great in a household where he’ll be an indoor companion who will be a central part of everyday life. [Note: The shelter originally assigned Henry, who’s a male, a female name, Keisha. Don’t be surprised if this other name and some “she” references crop up in places!] HENRY’S VIDEO: https://youtu.be/ 06rgt0BOcEA For more information on this pet, contact volunteer UHA adoption coordinator Jana at 857-998-7970 or jana@hope4animals.org. — at County of Los Angeles - Baldwin Park Animal Care Center .

A5022179 Sebastian | Bull Terrier/Pit Bull A5022179 Sebastian is a fun-loving 2-year-old black-and-white neutered male Bull Terrier and Pit Bull mix who was found as a stray in La Puente and brought to the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center on December 30, from which he was transferred to the Carson Animal Care Center. Weighing 63 lbs, Sebastian is the shelter clown: he makes everyone laugh with his happy, silly smile and endlessly-wagging tail. He is a happy participant in the doggy playgroups at the shelter, where he has made a lot of friends and has helped some more insecure dogs feel confident. Sebastian’s favorite activities include having his belly rubbed, kissing, and going for walks. A sporty fellow, Sebastian will be an excellent companion on walks, hikes, or runs. He would benefit from some basic obedience instruction to help him really shine as a companion, especially as he still has some puppy behaviors. Sebastian has a one-in-a-million sense of humor, and is guaranteed to make the lucky individual or family who makes him their indoor pet and companion laugh and laugh and laugh. CONTACT: Katja at katja@hope4animals.org or 951-973-2757 MONKEY is a charming 11-month-old brindle-and-white neutered male Bull Terrier mix (probably crossed with some German Shepherd, Pit Bull, or some other magical breeds) who was rescued from a high intake public shelter. Weighing 55 lbs, Monkey is a playful and affectionate young fellow who really knows how to monkey around! He is a favorite at doggy day care, and would be delighted to continue to have an active social life with other dogs in his forever home. Monkey is accustomed to living in a home with cats and other large dogs. He walks politely on leash, is crate trained and housebroken, and knows many key commands having completed a basic obedience course. Monkey's favorite activities include being with his people, going on walks, playing with other dogs, chewing on Nylabones, cuddling, sunbathing, watching people cook, and eating. He has adorable markings and we think it's extra special that he has brown eyelashes on one eye and white eyelashes on the other. Monkey has a laid-back medium energy level, and is best suited to households with teenagers and adults only (we don't know why, but Monkey is uncomfortable around small children and while he responds well to training with this issue, at this time he will not be placed in a home with kids in residence under age 10). Monkey will thrive in a household that will continue to provide the structure and guidance for him to develop into the outstanding adult dog he is meant to be. He will do especially well in a home that has previously had large-breed dogs. Monkey is a loyal and loving pup who will bring a lot of fun and friendship into his forever home. Application, home check, and adoption fee are required. CONTACT Katja at katja@hope4animals.org or 951-973-2757 for more info and an application. MONKEY is a COURTESY LISTING and not part of UHA's Shelter Support program.

Shelley and Emily have lived with the same family since they were puppies, and both girls are gentle, companionable dogs who have grown up with children and cats. Shelley and Emily are used to living outside with their own dogloo shelters, and go on daily walks and hikes. I am about 18-months-old and I am a bluenose Pit Bull mix puppy. I am full of lots of puppy energy! I adore playing with other dogs and get very excited around playtime. I currently live with FIVE other doggies who are my best friends, and I am currently being trained how to control my energy level. When I go to my new home, I will need to continue to work with trainer so I can become the best canine citizen there is! I ride very well in the car and I am currently potty trained. I know how to listen to my foster mama and will only chew on appropriate toys. I walk very well on leash, and I also know many commands! I know how to "sit," "wait," "down," "leave it," "stay", and "easy." I also know how to "shake" and "roll over" (both ways!) I get along very well with older children and can respect younger children, but I probably shouldn't live with them since I might accidentally knock them over with my puppy energy and enthusiasm. I am spayed, up to date on shots and rabies, and microchipped. If you are interested in adopting me, please contact my foster mama, Heather, at obeachgirl@yahoo.com ZULI’S VIDEO: http://youtu.be/TG8v_y7MYpQ MORE PHOTOS OF ZULI: http://on.fb.me/1smmDe6
