Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel / Shih Tzu / Mixed. Please contact Jill (xianshihtzu@embarqmail.com) for more information about this pet. AVAILABLE FOR SPONSORSHIP AND/OR ADOPTION J J's adoption donation is $175 and he is being fostered in Central Ohio. He has been neutered, microchipped, received his rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworm and started on prevention. He is also on flea prevention. J J is a special boy. He is a 6 year old Cocker Spaniel - Shih Tzu mix and definitely looks very much like a Cocker Spaniel. He was an owner surrender with his mother, Pearl, who was adopted into her furever home last year. Both JJ and Pearl had not received a lot of vet care in the last couple years. The day after JJ came into rescue, he went into the hospital with pancreatitis and was also diagnosed with diabetes. He most likely had had this going on for quite awhile since there were a few days that were touch and go, but JJ pulled through and is doing very well in foster care! He was a bit chunky when he came into rescue, but he's lost a couple pounds and he's a very good boy for his daily insulin shots. JJ loves to be with his person and he's very well mannered. He will need a home that has a strong vet history, because he does require daily insulin shots, and he will need to stay on a low fat diet since he did have pancreatitis. His condition is very manageable, and his medication is not that expensive. His insulin costs about $20-25 a month. JJ loves to go for car rides and walks well on a leash. JJ is also blind from the diabetes but will follow you anywhere as he sees and loves with his heart. He loves to be with his person, so if you're looking for a sweet companion, JJ is your boy! PLEASE NOTE: If you are viewing this biography on a website other than the Ohio Fuzzy Pawz website, not all information transfers to partner websites in some instances. If you go to the individual webpage of our dogs, you will be able to get more information each dog. Visual breed identification in dogs can be unreliable so, in many cases, we are only guessing at the predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. Our Adoption Process The adoption process has several steps involved. Please review prior to submitting an application. Our adoption process is detailed here: http://www.ohiofuzzypawz.com/info/adoption Our volunteers work very diligently to process each application and we try to ensure that we are making the best match possible for each dog. We do not schedule meetings with dogs until an application has been approved. It can take up to a few weeks to process an application or as little time as a few days, from the time you submit an application, please be prepared to adopt as we cannot hold dogs. Special Requirements Some dogs may have special requirements (for example, medications, a fence) -- if you apply for a dog, please be sure to read over the biography completely to see if there are any special needs and if you're home would be suitable. If we indicate on the dog's biography that a fence is required, this means your home must have a physical fence. Other dogs may require a "strong vet reference" which indicates that we are looking for a home that has a documented history of veterinary care with previous pets. The first step in our process is to submit an online adoption application at www.ohiofuzzypawz.com/forms. The application MUST include the personal references and veterinary, grooming, and landlord references (if applicable) and their respective contact information. If you do not include the references and the contact information, your application will be delayed as it CANNOT be processed. Once the references have been successfully completed, a home visit is then scheduled when a rescue representative can meet all members of the family or residents of the home. No application is approved prior to the home visit being done. At that point, the Directors will discuss any and all applications on a foster dog and make a selection--in many cases, there are multiple applications for each dog, so please be understanding that our only priority is the successful placement of each of our foster dogs. Out of State Adoptions We do adopt out of state to outstanding applicants, however, our process requires a home visit, so out of state adoptions can take longer. We do not ship our dogs, adopters should be prepared to pick up the dog in Central Ohio.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

    • Maltese-Poodle (Toy) Mix Dog For Adoption in Pataskala, OH

      Mindy Pauldi...

      rescue
      Breed: Maltese-Poodle (Toy) Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Pataskala, OH
Posted Breed: Maltese / Poodle (Toy) / Mixed (medium coat). Mindy's adoption donation is $175 and she is being fostered in Central Ohio. She has been spayed, micrcochipped, received her rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworms and on prevention as well as flea prevention. Due to her small size, only families with children over the age of 8 will be considered. This sweet girl came into rescue through no fault of her own. Her previous elderly owner passed away so she went to live with the lady's son. After about a year, he decided he could no longer care for her so he surrendered her to the shelter. Friends of the shelter contacted OFP to lend a helping hand for this darling little lady. Mindy has good potty manners if kept on a schedule. She is happy to just snuggle with her human or lounge around in a cozy doggie bed. She does interact with her foster sibs and has no trouble holding her own when necessary! She no longer has any teeth, not uncommon for small breed dogs, but that doesn't stop her from chowing down on hard dog food if it is small-bite kibble. For the health of her kidneys, she is on a special diet we get from the vet, which we assume she will need to remain on for the rest of her life. She is leash and crate trained and seems to enjoy car rides. So far she seems to be a pretty quiet little lady, happy to be wherever her people are! Now that she is feeling much stronger she will run around the yard and sometimes does "zoomies" around in the house. It's hard to remember she is not a young dog, because she can be pretty spunky. She does have some vision impairment and limited hearing, but that doesn't prevent her from engaging with her people and letting you know when she wants something. If you feel you could give this super sweet girl a loving forever home, please submit an adoption application to be considered. Oscar is ready to start his new life. He was abandoned when his family moved and a good Sam stepped in to save him. Oscar is very friendly and loves everyone. He is a Bassett Hound/ Shih Tzu mix and he doesn't shed. He has done well on house training if kept on a schedule and is crate trained in his current foster home. Oscar is still a puppy and would benefit greatly from a training to help him focus and better learn basic commands. He will sit on command . He isn't high energy he just likes to be near his humans. Once he settles in, he is a complete cuddlebug. He would benefit from a family home with a companion dog and a fenced yard. He does well with children. He ignores cats. Oscar likes to sleep cuddled up with his human, I think he needs to know he is safe now. He is the best mix of theses two dogs and will make any home happier just by being in it! She has been spayed, microchipped, received her rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworms and started on prevention, as well as flea prevention. Olive requires a home with a strong veterinary history. Olive is an incredibly sweet girl who was abandoned at the Franklin County Dog Shelter when she had been attacked by a larger dog and was left with a ruptured eye. She was in very bad shape and such extreme pain that the shelter couldn't examine her. We got her to our vet who was guarded as she also had skull fractures from the attack. Thanks to our vet and a very patient foster, Olive has made an astounding recovery. She is very spunky and full of life. Olive loves attention and is fine around other dogs. She is estimated to be a bit older at 11 - 12 years young but Olive has lots of living to do. She does well on a housetraining if kept on a schedule. Olive does really love to be with her person so someone who is home a lot or can take her along is the best match for her. She is a smaller girl so no children under the age of 8 -10 and we do require a strong vet history. She has been spayed, microchipped, received her rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworms and started on prevention as well as flea prevention. Luna came into rescue from a local kill shelter where she was not doing well in the shelter environment. Luna is a 3 year old Bichon mix that is on the shy side but she does warm up. She will require an experienced home with patience and she does need to be an only female dog. Luna does well on housetraining if kept on a schedule and preference is given for a home with a fenced yard and no children under the age of 10.

He has been neutered, microchipped, received his rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworms and started on prevention, as well as flea prevention. Phelps came into rescue when his owner could no longer care for him. He is a 4 year old gray Shih Tzu or Lhasa mix who loves to be with his person. He does well on housetraining if kept on a schedule. Phelps gets along with other dogs of similar size but would be fine as an only dog as well. Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Please contact Jill (xianshihtzu@embarqmail.com) for more information about this pet. AVAILABLE FOR SPONSORSHIP AND/OR ADOPTION Cassie's adoption donation is $200 and she is being fostered in Central Ohio. Cassie has been spayed, microchipped, received her rabies, distemper/parvo and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworms and started on prevention as well as flea prevention. Adorable Cassie is a special little Shih Tzu girl and quite the survivor! She came into rescue with 5 other dogs from a hoarding situation near Cincinnati. These dogs suffered incredible abuse and neglect, but 9 year old Cassie required the most medical attention. She had both ACLs torn and required surgery to repair those as well as both of her wrists dislocated and required surgery to fuse the joints. Cassie has been a trooper through it all. Our hope was that she would be able to walk once her surgeries were completed, however, that was not to be. We then discovered that due to the neglect she suffered, she would never be able to use properly use her hind legs to walk. But Cassie is very determined and scoots to get whatever she wants! She has a wheelchair that is available to her as well, but Cassie can be a stubborn girl and "just wants to do it herself". She is full of personality and does not let any other dog intimidate her. Cassie may not be able to walk, but she deserves to have a family of her own who loves and cares for her! She does well on housetraining if taken outside regularly. She will require a home with a strong veterinary reference and no children under the age of 8.
