Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel / Shih Tzu / Mixed. Please contact Jill (xianshihtzu@embarqmail.com) for more information about this pet. AVAILABLE FOR SPONSORSHIP AND/OR ADOPTION J J's adoption donation is $175 and he is being fostered in Central Ohio. He has been neutered, microchipped, received his rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworm and started on prevention. He is also on flea prevention. J J is a special boy. He is a 6 year old Cocker Spaniel - Shih Tzu mix and definitely looks very much like a Cocker Spaniel. He was an owner surrender with his mother, Pearl, who was adopted into her furever home last year. Both JJ and Pearl had not received a lot of vet care in the last couple years. The day after JJ came into rescue, he went into the hospital with pancreatitis and was also diagnosed with diabetes. He most likely had had this going on for quite awhile since there were a few days that were touch and go, but JJ pulled through and is doing very well in foster care! He was a bit chunky when he came into rescue, but he's lost a couple pounds and he's a very good boy for his daily insulin shots. JJ loves to be with his person and he's very well mannered. He will need a home that has a strong vet history, because he does require daily insulin shots, and he will need to stay on a low fat diet since he did have pancreatitis. His condition is very manageable, and his medication is not that expensive. His insulin costs about $20-25 a month. JJ loves to go for car rides and walks well on a leash. JJ is also blind from the diabetes but will follow you anywhere as he sees and loves with his heart. He loves to be with his person, so if you're looking for a sweet companion, JJ is your boy! PLEASE NOTE: If you are viewing this biography on a website other than the Ohio Fuzzy Pawz website, not all information transfers to partner websites in some instances. If you go to the individual webpage of our dogs, you will be able to get more information each dog. Visual breed identification in dogs can be unreliable so, in many cases, we are only guessing at the predominant breed or breed mix. We get to know each dog as an individual and will do our best to describe each of our dogs based on personality, not by breed label. Our Adoption Process The adoption process has several steps involved. Please review prior to submitting an application. Our adoption process is detailed here: http://www.ohiofuzzypawz.com/info/adoption Our volunteers work very diligently to process each application and we try to ensure that we are making the best match possible for each dog. We do not schedule meetings with dogs until an application has been approved. It can take up to a few weeks to process an application or as little time as a few days, from the time you submit an application, please be prepared to adopt as we cannot hold dogs. Special Requirements Some dogs may have special requirements (for example, medications, a fence) -- if you apply for a dog, please be sure to read over the biography completely to see if there are any special needs and if you're home would be suitable. If we indicate on the dog's biography that a fence is required, this means your home must have a physical fence. Other dogs may require a "strong vet reference" which indicates that we are looking for a home that has a documented history of veterinary care with previous pets. The first step in our process is to submit an online adoption application at www.ohiofuzzypawz.com/forms. The application MUST include the personal references and veterinary, grooming, and landlord references (if applicable) and their respective contact information. If you do not include the references and the contact information, your application will be delayed as it CANNOT be processed. Once the references have been successfully completed, a home visit is then scheduled when a rescue representative can meet all members of the family or residents of the home. No application is approved prior to the home visit being done. At that point, the Directors will discuss any and all applications on a foster dog and make a selection--in many cases, there are multiple applications for each dog, so please be understanding that our only priority is the successful placement of each of our foster dogs. Out of State Adoptions We do adopt out of state to outstanding applicants, however, our process requires a home visit, so out of state adoptions can take longer. We do not ship our dogs, adopters should be prepared to pick up the dog in Central Ohio.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

He has been neutered, microchipped, received his rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworms and started on prevention as well as flea prevention. Reggie has also had a dental cleaning. Reggie is a handsome, fun, and loving guy. He is a 4 year old Lhasa Apso mix and he was pulled from the Franklin County Dog Shelter during their closure. Reggie was surrendered at the shelter with Bella by their owner as they said they could no longer care for them. Both dogs were extremely matted and in poor condition. It took hours of grooming to get the matted hair removed. Reggie was such a sweet and patient boy that he knew we were trying to help him. He is bonded with Bella and they do very well together and we do want to keep them together. Reggie does great on housetraining and crate training, but he is doing so well in his current foster home that he is not being crated. He loves to play with toys (especially those with squeakers) and does well on car rides and on a leash. We do prefer a home with a fenced yard. Location: Pataskala, OH
Posted Breed: Poodle (Miniature) / Cocker Spaniel / Mixed. Please contact Katie (krowswel@columbus.rr.com) for more information about this pet. Angel's adoption donation is $325 and she is being fostered in Central Ohio. She has been spayed, microchipped, received her rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworms and on prevention, as well as flea prevention. Angel has also had a dental cleaning. Angel came into rescue from an owner who could no longer care for her dog because of her family situation. She is a 5 year old loving Poodle - Cocker Spaniel girl who weighs about 15 pounds. She has a super sweet temperament and loves to burrow under the blankets and cuddle with you! Angel is also an active little girl who loves to run and play, often seen just trotting about the house carrying a stuffed toy in her mouth. She loves to go for leash walks and is in the process of learning how not to pull in all her excitement at the great outdoors. When outside in the the fenced backyard, she gets so excited barking at all the squirrels and birds- such new smells and sounds! She takes her job as "guard dog" very seriously, quickly letting you know if someone knocks on the door or might be walking by. She gets along with other dogs but would be truly happy as an ONLY dog as she is totally focused on you as her person. She has been trained to potty pads and has good potty manners but will also go outside once she learns your home routine. She is a bit on the shy side, so a quieter home with no children under the age of 8 would be best, and a fenced yard is preferred (just because she loves to run outside!) Posted Breed: Shih Tzu (long coat). Razzle's adoption donation is $350 and he is being fostered in Central Ohio. He has been neutered, microchipped, received his rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, is on heartworm prevention and flea prevention. Razzle has completed treated for heartworms and also had a dental cleaning. Razzle was one of the seven treated heartworm positive dogs that came to Ohio by way of our sister rescue in Texas. As a condition in his adoption contract, Razzle will be required to be kept on heartworm prevention year round for the remainder of his life. Razzle is a sweet and playful approximately 4 year old, gold with white Shih Tzu. He does very well on housetraining if kept on a schedule and he can also use a doggy door. Razzle loves to be the center of attention and enjoys snuggling up for some lap time. Due to Razzle's zeal to play, he will do best in a home where he can have another doggy companion. He is a smart boy but can also be a little mischevious at times. So he will need a house that keeps tempting things (like socks) out of reach. Preference is given to homes with a fenced yard. A strong vet reference is required. Cash is a liver and white 1 year old Shih Tzu - Brussels Griffon mix. He is a bit on the reserved side so he will need a patient home with a companion dog. He was turned into the shelter because he nipped a child in the home, but it does appear that he was teased and tormented by the child. We have seen no aggression from him at all. He very much wants to please his people and loves to be around other dogs. He does well on housetraining if kept on a schedule.

Posted Breed: Shih Tzu (long coat). Please contact Brenda (smithfactory@sbcglobal.net) for more information about this pet. Dinah’s adoption donation is $175 and she is being fostered in Central Ohio. She has been spayed, microchipped, received her rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworms and started on prevention. Dinah has also had a dental cleaning. Dinah is an approximately 8 year old Shih Tzu girl who loves to cuddle and be with her person! She came into rescue when her owner dumped her at a kill shelter in a severely neglected, matted condition. Once the vet removed Dinah's ruptured eye and bladder stones, she started to feel SO much better! Dinah has cleaned up very well, but she is a bit of a "chunky monkey" and still needs to lose a couple pounds (but then again, who doesn't?!) Dinah eats a special diet to prevent bladder stones, so she certainly enjoys her food like a good girl. In August we discovered that Dinah has a low Thyroid and started her on medication. She has lost two pounds in the last three weeks and has a lot more energy. She can even climb a flight of stairs now! She does well on housetraining if kept on a schedule and would definitely benefit from someone who enjoys taking her for walks on a leash. She has been through a lot in her little life, so a quieter home with no small children would be the best fit for her. She gets along with other dogs but would do wonderfully as your one and only furbaby! Dinah sees well with her bright good eye and doesn't mind the eye drops that keep her eye nice and moist. Dinah has gotten a second chance and is taking full advantage of it by relishing her new lease on life! She would love to find her forever person to enjoy life together! Posted Breed: Shih Tzu. Please contact Jill (xianshihtzu@embarqmail.com) for more information about this pet. AVAILABLE FOR SPONSORSHIP AND/OR ADOPTION Cassie's adoption donation is $200 and she is being fostered in Central Ohio. Cassie has been spayed, microchipped, received her rabies, distemper/parvo and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworms and started on prevention as well as flea prevention. Adorable Cassie is a special little Shih Tzu girl and quite the survivor! She came into rescue with 5 other dogs from a hoarding situation near Cincinnati. These dogs suffered incredible abuse and neglect, but 9 year old Cassie required the most medical attention. She had both ACLs torn and required surgery to repair those as well as both of her wrists dislocated and required surgery to fuse the joints. Cassie has been a trooper through it all. Our hope was that she would be able to walk once her surgeries were completed, however, that was not to be. We then discovered that due to the neglect she suffered, she would never be able to use properly use her hind legs to walk. But Cassie is very determined and scoots to get whatever she wants! She has a wheelchair that is available to her as well, but Cassie can be a stubborn girl and "just wants to do it herself". She is full of personality and does not let any other dog intimidate her. Cassie may not be able to walk, but she deserves to have a family of her own who loves and cares for her! She does well on housetraining if taken outside regularly. She will require a home with a strong veterinary reference and no children under the age of 8. He has been neutered, microchipped, received his rabies, distemper/parvo, and bordetella vaccines, tested negative for heartworms and started on prevention, as well as flea prevention. Phelps came into rescue when his owner could no longer care for him. He is a 4 year old gray Shih Tzu or Lhasa mix who loves to be with his person. He does well on housetraining if kept on a schedule. Phelps gets along with other dogs of similar size but would be fine as an only dog as well.
