Cocker Spaniel

A.K.A. : American Cocker Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel
Overview: The Cocker Spaniel is one of the most popular breeds in America. They're playful, love people, and adapt to both city and country dwelling. A Cocker needs a lot of exercise, but you'll find it a joy to have around!
Breed Group: Sporting

Coat: Silky, flat or slightly wavy, not overly long.
Character: Cocker Spaniels are intelligent, cheerful, lively, and affectionate.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets.
Care: The Cocker Spaniel requires regular grooming with a brush and comb. The ears should be cleaned frequently and a professional clipping and scissoring every 2 to 3 months.
Training: This breed requires consistency in training, but do not be too firm. He's eager to please and willing to learn, with the right approach.
Activity: The Cocker Spaniel can get by with three walks a day, although he welcomes being able to run freely now and then and enjoys swimming when given the opportunity.
Country of Origin: USA
Health Issue: This breed may be prone to major problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, and patellar luxation. Minor problems are hip dysplasia, ectropion, entropion, progressive retinal atrophy, allergies, seborrhea, lip fold pioderma, and otitis.

More About Cocker Spaniel Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Even with her advanced senior age Missy is an active and healthy dog and has adjusted well to the recent changes in her life. She doesn't act her age! Missy is a healthy senior dog who needs a wonderful home in which to spend the rest of her golden years. Iron therapy replacement due to low red blood cell count. Recent blood work revealed continued decrease in red blood cell count and low platelets. Red meat and organ meats added to her kibble help to get her red blood cell count within normal limits. Remains under vet care. Began treatment for dry eye. Began Apoquel for chronic itching. Overall she is doing very well. Missy does not have teeth. She is a joy to care for and is pleasant in every way. She's a sweet and gentle dog. She is getting daily exercise which should continue, and is looking forward to finding a safe and secure place to live. She is crate trained but really loves to cuddle up on a soft pillow or doggie bed on the floor. She might even jump up to sleep on your easy chair if you would allow that. She has an adorable heart marking on her side. Might there be room in your home for sweet Missy? She's a precious angel! She would add much joy to a lucky family. Bonded with Buddy C 16-108, her long-time companion. Casey is a tiny little bundle of joy who came to the rescue with her companion Buddy. History of chronic urinary tract issues from unknown cause but stable at this time with controlled medications and diet. She does wear a diaper in the house due to dribbling and at night but it is almost always dry in the morning. Casey has had various diagnostic tests but this remains a puzzle. She had GI issues as well but with a home cooked diet that is now behind her. Home cooked food also helps to keep Casey's pH in balance. Casey gets around so lightly on her feet she is almost like a cat. She does have one cataract but sees well with her other eye. Enjoyed motor home road trip with foster family and foster dog brothers and sister. Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Hi, I'm Zeke and I'm 11 years old, but you would never know it. I don't sleep as much as most dogs during the day because I always need to know what's going on so I don't miss anything. Wherever you are, look down, and I'm there. I am easy-peasy, love people and other dogs, and especially walks and riding in cars. My trips with my fosters are so much fun as I get to see all parts of the USA! Baths and brushings are the best and I my favorite sport is rolling in the snow. I am hard of hearing, and sight impaired in one eye. Also, I have a heart condition, but it is controlled with medications and doesn't slow me down. I am housebroken, but if you leave me for long periods of time, please put down puppy pads just in case. Abdominal ultra sound revealed bladder cancer. Medications started to slow tumor growth and decrease inflammation. Cancer stable at this time. I do make it through the night, so I can sleep with you. (hint, hint). My foster mom says I'm a silly boy and am always trying to get into something. I will go through trash, laundry, cupboards, anything else if given the opportunity. If you want a snuggle buddy who will bring you years of love and companionship, I'm your man! If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Howdy! My name is Barchie, and I come from the big ol’ state of Texas! I’m a happy, dapper little guy. Life is great, and I am excited to get out and see, um, smell it! My eyesight is pretty poor so I can’t find you on my own very well. My hearing isn’t so great either … Just give me a little tap when you want my attention, or a little brush on my back. Mostly I just like to sit around, and the best place is on your lap or right beside you. I love sleeping on a big soft bed, and I will try to leave you some room, BOL! I like riding in the car, but I get worried that we are going someplace bad. Just give me a little love and help me know everything is ok. Walks are great, I like being outside. Be warned, though, my MO is to just amble along beside you, sniffing and sniff some more. And I’m a real southern gentleman, no pulling on my leash. No barking either. When you are gone for a while, I get so excited when you come home, I dance and run around like a crazy man! My foster mom says I am pretty darn cute, especially in my snow sweaters. I made a big milestone for Thanksgiving, I went down the stairs all by myself! Those steep stairs are scary when you can’t see ‘em… My foster ‘pack’ and I get along great. I’ve met a couple of neighborhood dogs and everyone was nice and polite. The kiddos in the neighborhood love my soft brown fur, they are real gentle because they know I’m an older guy. Plus Ma helps them to be nice. I don’t know why my last people left me, but Ma says she will work hard to find me a wonderful new and forever family. Would that be you? Foster Mom says, Barchie is a sweet, happy and loving little (16 lbs) guy. A real ham, too! He does have severe separation anxiety but we are working on that, and he is getting much better now that he feels secure. Going down the stairs was HUGE. We’ve been working hard on that as well, but any new home he goes to with stairs he will need help and encouragement for a while. Barchie may also need some time to get acclimated to a new home; where the furniture, walls and doors are. He is kind of a picky eater, but at 12, I guess he knows what he likes! His ear infection is still an issue, we start a new round of treatment right after Thanksgiving. He loves having his chin, armpits and belly rubbed. Barch still associates any car ride with either the vet, or being dumped. Once he realizes it’s a ‘good’ ride, he calms down and sits quietly. Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. They are also micro-chipped, groomed (if needed), and given a thorough professional veterinary exam to identify any health issues or potential issues. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Katrina is a loving dog who wants human companionship and also enjoys the company of other dogs. She will look deeply into your eyes with love. Katrina came into the rescue very overweight and with a good controlled diet she has lost several pounds and is looking good. Katrina does need help walking up slick stairs. She runs down just fine and has no trouble with outdoor stairs. She is a happy little dog who has come through some tough times before coming to RMCR. She loves to play with rocks. She is house-trained for the most part but needs reminders to go outdoors and will defecate sometimes when lying down if she has gotten spooked. Wears a diaper at bedtime or when being left for a few hours. All in all Katrina is a love and would do well in a home with mature adults. She is a joy to foster. Katrina's hind legs stumble sometimes but that does not cause her problems. The vet feels that this is most likely due to a prior neurological issue which causes her legs to "not know where they briefly". Is now on Gabapentin for suspected neurological issues. This does not cause her problems. Rear legs seem weaker recently. Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. They are also micro-chipped, groomed (if needed), and given a thorough professional veterinary exam to identify any health issues or potential issues. My name is Spike and I am a handsome buff and brown cocker weighing in at about 25 pounds. I am very sweet and affectionate. The thing about being a senior dog is, I have a great big heart of gold and I have so much love to offer any human lucky enough to adopt me. Maybe my hearing isn’t what it used to be, and I have fewer teeth than back in the day, but I am house-trained and pretty healthy overall. My vision also seems ok. My mind is in great shape. My foster family says I am smart as a whip. For the record, they also call me “cutie pie.” (Tee hee). I am an energetic boy with lots of character. I am very attentive to my foster. I love walks and have no problem going up and down stairs. I like riding in the car and stay very still. As for my fellow canines, I have not met a furry friend I did not like - big or small, I am ready to play. I can assure you of one thing, I am loyal. If you take me home forever, you can count on having a second shadow – one with big black eyes, long sexy eyelashes and the sweetest freckles ever. I am the dog that can go anywhere with anyone and always behave!! I'm very passive, obedient, and kind. Not much seems to bother me. Loyalty is one of my strongest assets - I never lose track of my brothers or family members and always follow, never lead. Together we enjoy sleeping and our daily outings. As any good cocker would, I LOVE my food but at times struggle seeing the food in front of me. I am looking for someone who is patient, structured and willing to take me on slow, leisurely walks to avoid soiling in the house. Must go to a family with another dog in the home. He should be adopted with his long-time companion Casey C 16-109. These 2 dogs really love each other. Buddy is blind from cataracts but does seem to see shadows and movement. He is on daily eye drops to keep the pressures low in his eyes as he does have a history of glaucoma.. Once coming to my foster home he learned his way around the house and yard rather quickly and gets around very well. He will even try to play with a ball on the floor. It has been heartwarming watching Buddy blossom into a silly little dog. He seeks human companionship frequently and will run to meet us at the door if we have been gone. Buddy loves cuddling and being pet. He is hesitant on the leash but will follow once he trusts his handler. Enjoyed motor home road trip with foster family and foster dog brothers and sister. There is a lot to love in this little bundle of joy! Buddy would really love to go to a home where there is another small dog as he has not lived without a doggie companion in the past.
