Cocker Spaniel

A.K.A. : American Cocker Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel

Character: Cocker Spaniels are intelligent, cheerful, lively, and affectionate.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets.
Care: The Cocker Spaniel requires regular grooming with a brush and comb. The ears should be cleaned frequently and a professional clipping and scissoring every 2 to 3 months.
Training: This breed requires consistency in training, but do not be too firm. He's eager to please and willing to learn, with the right approach.

Country of Origin: USA

More About Cocker Spaniel Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

She loves her hugs and body rubs and prefers to sleep in her bed by her foster's. She is a very low maintenance girl. She wants to be where the action is. Until her teeth are attended to, she eats soft food. She wags her tail in appreciation when any attention is paid to her. She is able to climb three stairs but a flight might be a bit much. Maddie is deaf and can see only light and moving shadow. She gets around in the house just fine and when the door is open will potty outside. She has a dental scheduled during which teeth may be extracted. She has a 3/6 heart murmur without symptoms. She is not on meds. Casey remains under vet care for bladder issues / bladder incontinence of undetermined cause. She has had several bladder infections that come and go. She wears a diaper while in the house. Casey has had various diagnostic tests but this remains a puzzle. She had GI issues as well but with a home cooked diet that is now behind her. Casey gets around so lightly on her feet she is almost like a cat. She does have one cataract but sees well with her other eye. At this time Casey remains on the sidelines while we care for her medically. Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Buddy is very sweet and easy going. He has been living with his companion Casey C but is doing well in a pack of other dogs and is now up for adoption without Casey. Buddy is blind from cataracts but does seem to see shadows and movement. Once coming to my foster home he learned his way around the house and yard rather quickly and gets around very well. He will even try to play with a ball on the floor. It has been heartwarming watching Buddy blossom into a silly little dog. He seeks human companionship frequently and will run to meet us at the door if we have been gone. Buddy loves cuddling and being pet. He is hesitant on the leash but will follow once he trusts his handler. There is a lot to love in this little bundle of joy! Buddy would really love to go to a home where there is another small dog as he has not lived without a doggie companion in the past. They are also micro-chipped, groomed (if needed), and given a thorough professional veterinary exam to identify any health issues or potential issues. She will look deeply into your eyes with love. Katrina came into the rescue very overweight and with a good controlled diet she has lost several pounds and is looking good. Katrina does need help walking up slick stairs. She runs down just fine and has no trouble with outdoor stairs. She is a happy little dog who has come through some tough times before coming to RMCR. She is house-trained for the most part but needs reminders to go outdoors and will defecate sometimes when lying down if she has gotten spooked. All in all Katrina is a love and would do well in a home with mature adults. She is a joy to foster. He goes along mostly with what is wanted of him but if he lays down, it is best not to push him. He is late riser in the mornings and enjoys snuggling down in his bed. He loves his food so it is necessary to feed him away from other dogs. He will wait patiently for his meal and takes treats nicely. Max loves car rides, the dog park and going for walks. His foster family is working on getting him to walk at a slower pace. He loves his toys and can be a little territorial about them, giving a soft growl to other pups. He gets along good with other dogs once he knows them. He is protective and loving to his people. Max would do good by himself or with just one companion dog. She is a bit shy but once she is comfortable will come up to you and want to be petted and loved. Chloe is very bonded with her sister, Bridget 16-125-2. They like to lay together and groom each other. Chloe helps Bridget (who is vision impaired) get around by walking next to her and showing her the way. Chloe likes to go out for walks, but doesn't need a lot of exercise. Chloe was found wandering the streets with Bridget. She had a terrible ear infection when she arrived to RMCR. She was given oral medication and ear drops and since has greatly improved, however years of untreated ear problems has left Chloe almost fully deaf. As Chloe is Bridget's eyes, Bridget is Chloe's ears and always alerts her to what's going on. They are so cute together! Other than her hearing impairment, Chloe is a healthy and happy girl! He loves to follow you around the house, sit by you while you are working on the computer, or sit with you on the couch. He loves to be near his people! He is pretty much laid back and doesn't require a lot of maintenance. We keep him in a kennel when out for long periods as that is his 'safe' place. Gus barks when he hears noises or doors shutting, it is manageable, but possibly not appropriate for an apartment. Gus is a 2015 Alumni, returned due to family illness.
