Cocker Spaniel

A.K.A. : American Cocker Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel
Overview: The Cocker Spaniel is one of the most popular breeds in America. They're playful, love people, and adapt to both city and country dwelling. A Cocker needs a lot of exercise, but you'll find it a joy to have around!
Breed Group: Sporting
Weight (lbs): 24-28
Height (in): male: 14-15, female: 13-14

Coat: Silky, flat or slightly wavy, not overly long.
Character: Cocker Spaniels are intelligent, cheerful, lively, and affectionate.
Temperament: This breed gets along well with children, other dogs, and most household pets.
Care: The Cocker Spaniel requires regular grooming with a brush and comb. The ears should be cleaned frequently and a professional clipping and scissoring every 2 to 3 months.
Training: This breed requires consistency in training, but do not be too firm. He's eager to please and willing to learn, with the right approach.
Activity: The Cocker Spaniel can get by with three walks a day, although he welcomes being able to run freely now and then and enjoys swimming when given the opportunity.
Country of Origin: USA
Health Issue: This breed may be prone to major problems such as cataracts, glaucoma, and patellar luxation. Minor problems are hip dysplasia, ectropion, entropion, progressive retinal atrophy, allergies, seborrhea, lip fold pioderma, and otitis.

More About Cocker Spaniel Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Bob O. is very loving and playful! He enjoys short walks at the park as well as being a lounge around dog at home. DO NOT let his being blind or semi-deaf fool you though, as his other senses are sharp for a senior guy. He's got a healthy appetite, It is safe to say Bob has somewhat of a sweet tooth Bob loves to play with his teddy bear,he also loves to play with his squeaky toys,to Bob, every box is a toy box! At night he prefers to sleep next to his human in a big bed.Bob is house broken, and makes noise or cry's when he needs to go outside. When on walks please be patient with the him as he tends to walk in circles due to his blindness. This doesn't stop Bob from being well behaved and great on his leash though! Even though Bob is happy and active, his intake vetting revealed several issues that need further evaluation and treatment before he will be ready to go to his forever family . Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. They are also micro-chipped, groomed (if needed), and given a thorough professional veterinary exam to identify any health issues or potential issues. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Buster is a happy boy who will be your faithful follower. Wherever you go, he will follow to satisfy his curiosity. He loves car rides and going for walks. He is learning to chase a ball but does not like to give it back so his foster family is working with him on that. He prefers to be asked about things. Buster will need some training for resource protective issues. We feel Buster did not have much human interaction. When Buster had a spiritual reading he said he needed a home with teenagers. He says they understand a dog like him. Buster prefers a calm safe environment and does not do well with too much excitement. He does like to meet new people. He will chew things when anxious and needs to be redirected at these moments. Socks are his specialty. All in all , our Buster is a loving pup who wants his forever home. Woof he agrees. Buster is a laid back lovable boy. He gets along well with other dogs and is very friendly and is interested in meeting new folks. He likes viewing life from the front seat of the car with his head up high. Buster seems to have discovered a love for Frisbee's and rubber balls and his nyla bone. We think that he was never played with as a pup so throwing a ball or frisbee is new to him....he loves it. Having a companion dog is ok with Buster and he likes to play/hang with them. Needs to be in a home without children. He cuddles up beside you on the couch and likes to sleep at the end of the bed. Needs lots of activity to interest him so he does not eat your socks. Buster is a sweet boy who is independent but loves to be near his people. He can be very territorial with his possessions. Buster loves to walk so he would be a good hiking buddy. Buster needs one on one attention although one other dog would be fine. Buster is a nice dog who really needs a place to live out his senior years. Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. They are also micro-chipped, groomed (if needed), and given a thorough professional veterinary exam to identify any health issues or potential issues. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Hi Friends. My name is Spike and I am a handsome buff and brown cocker weighing in at about 25 pounds. I am very sweet and affectionate. The thing about being a senior dog is, I have a great big heart of gold and I have so much love to offer any human lucky enough to adopt me. Maybe my hearing isn’t what it used to be, and I have fewer teeth than back in the day, but I am house-trained and pretty healthy overall. My vision also seems ok. My mind is in great shape. My foster family says I am smart as a whip. For the record, they also call me “cutie pie.” (Tee hee). I am an energetic boy with lots of character. I am very attentive to my foster. I love walks and have no problem going up and down stairs. I like riding in the car and stay very still. As for my fellow canines, I have not met a furry friend I did not like - big or small, I am ready to play. I can assure you of one thing, I am loyal. If you take me home forever, you can count on having a second shadow – one with big black eyes, long sexy eyelashes and the sweetest freckles ever. Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. They are also micro-chipped, groomed (if needed), and given a thorough professional veterinary exam to identify any health issues or potential issues. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Katrina is a loving dog who wants human companionship and also enjoys the company of other dogs. She will look deeply into your eyes with love. Katrina came into the rescue very overweight and with a good controlled diet she has lost several pounds and is looking good. Katrina does need help walking up slick stairs. She runs down just fine and has no trouble with outdoor stairs. She is a happy little dog who has come through some tough times before coming to RMCR. She loves to play with rocks. She is house-trained for the most part but needs reminders to go outdoors and will defecate sometimes when lying down if she has gotten spooked. Wears a diaper at bedtime, just in case. All in all Katrina is a love and would do well in a home with mature adults. She is a joy to foster. Katrina's hind legs stumble sometimes but that does not cause her problems. The vet feels that this is most likely due to a prior neurological issue which causes her legs to "not know where they briefly". Is now on Gabapentin for suspected neurological issues. This does not cause her problems. Rear legs seem weaker recently. Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. They are also micro-chipped, groomed (if needed), and given a thorough professional veterinary exam to identify any health issues or potential issues. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Hi, I'm Zeke and I'm 11 years old, but you would never know it. I don't sleep as much as most dogs during the day because I always need to know what's going on so I don't miss anything. Wherever you are, look down, and I'm there. I am easy-peasy, love people and other dogs, and especially walks and riding in cars. My trips with my fosters are so much fun as I get to see all parts of the USA! Baths and brushings are the best and I my favorite sport is rolling in the snow. I am hard of hearing, and sight impaired in one eye. Also, I have a heart condition, but it is controlled with medications and doesn't slow me down. I am housebroken, but if you leave me for long periods of time, please put down puppy pads just in case. I do make it through the night, so I can sleep with you. (hint, hint). I'm happy and doing well other than recurrent bladder infections. My foster mom says I'm a silly boy and am always trying to get into something. I will go through trash, laundry, cupboards, anything else if given the opportunity. If you want a snuggle buddy who will bring you years of love and companionship, I'm your man! Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Jack is a very, very sweet dog who gets along with all humans and animals. Gentle, sweet, and loving. There's not much else to say about this guy. He loves everyone he meets and just wants to be around you as much as he can. He loves to go on short walks, loves his toys and treats. He never begs and knows a lot of basic commands and hand signals. Give him a good belly rub and a hug and he's your best friend. He is good around cats, kittens and kids of all ages. He is good alone but prefers company of course. Not a picky eater and has short bursts of energy but get's tired pretty easy. (He will even chase a squirrel if he's feeling frisky). He will bark at the doorbell or if he gets really excited, but quiets down quickly. He sleeps on his bed next to whatever human he feels like but doesn't really play favorites. This guy's is a real love and just needs a nice place to rest a lot and get some love. Early stage Leukemia. Has no symptoms and is doing well. Has a low thyroid and is now on thyroid supplement. Vet's impression is that Jack could live several more years even with leukemia. Jack Is now available for adoption into a forever home where he can live out his senior years. Jack had a seizure. Last time one was seen was in the shelter before he came to RMCR. Put on trial of neuro-formula kibble rather than seizure medication. No further seizures. Otherwise he is doing very well and would still like a forever home! I am the dog that can go anywhere with anyone and always behave!! I'm very passive, obedient, and kind. Not much seems to bother me. Loyalty is one of my strongest assets - I never lose track of my brothers or family members and always follow, never lead. Together we enjoy sleeping and our daily outings. As any good cocker would, I LOVE my food but at times struggle seeing the food in front of me. She would add much joy to a lucky family. Bonded with Buddy C 16-108, her long-time companion. Casey is a tiny little bundle of joy who came to the rescue with her companion Buddy. History of chronic urinary tract issues from unknown cause but stable at this time with controlled medications and diet. She does wear a diaper at night just in case, but it is almost always dry in the morning. Casey has had various diagnostic tests but this remains a puzzle. She had GI issues as well but with a home cooked diet that is now behind her. Casey gets around so lightly on her feet she is almost like a cat. She does have one cataract but sees well with her other eye. Enjoyed motor home road trip with foster family and foster dog brothers and sister. Must go to a family with another dog in the home. He should be adopted with his long-time companion Casey C 16-109. These 2 dogs really love each other. Buddy is blind from cataracts but does seem to see shadows and movement. He is on daily eye drops to keep the pressures low in his eyes as he does have a history of glaucoma.. Once coming to my foster home he learned his way around the house and yard rather quickly and gets around very well. He will even try to play with a ball on the floor. It has been heartwarming watching Buddy blossom into a silly little dog. He seeks human companionship frequently and will run to meet us at the door if we have been gone. Buddy loves cuddling and being pet. He is hesitant on the leash but will follow once he trusts his handler. Enjoyed motor home road trip with foster family and foster dog brothers and sister.
