If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Jack is a very, very sweet dog who gets along with all humans and animals. Gentle, sweet, and loving. There's not much else to say about this guy. He loves everyone he meets and just wants to be around you as much as he can. He loves to go on short walks, loves his toys and treats. He never begs and knows a lot of basic commands and hand signals. Give him a good belly rub and a hug and he's your best friend. He is good around cats, kittens and kids of all ages. He is good alone but prefers company of course. Not a picky eater and has short bursts of energy but get's tired pretty easy. (He will even chase a squirrel if he's feeling frisky). He will bark at the doorbell or if he gets really excited, but quiets down quickly. He sleeps on his bed next to whatever human he feels like but doesn't really play favorites. This guys is a real love and just needs a nice place to rest a lot and get some love. Early stage Leukemia. Has no symptoms and is doing well. Has a low thyroid and is now on thyroid supplement. Vet's impression is that Jack could live several more years even with leukemia. He could really use a dental to help him feel even better if we can raise the funds! WOULD ANYONE LIKE TO SPONSOR JACK FOR A MUCH NEEDED DENTAL? Jack Is now available for adoption into a forever home where he can live out his senior years. Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. They are also micro-chipped, groomed (if needed), and given a thorough professional veterinary exam to identify any health issues or potential issues. Max Y 17-026...

      Age: Adult

Posted Breed: Cocker Spaniel (medium coat). Please contact RMCR (Inquiries@RockyMountainCockerRescue.org) for more information about this pet. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ In the time that we have had Max, we have really enjoyed his sweetness and his ability to adapt. He loves going on walks playing in the stream, lounging in the backyard on the grass and just lounging period. He enjoys a good scratching and his tail never stops wagging especially if you're by the fridge where he hopes he will get a treat. We have a cocker spaniel and he has done great with her, and he has also had multiple other interactions with dogs that have gone well. We think Max would be best in a home with 0 to 1 dogs because we feel like he does best when there's not a lot of commotion and anxiety around him. We take him for walks regularly which he loves and he gets excited when you grab the leash, but don't expect a pup that walks right by your side. He is an active dog. He had a bit of an ear ache and he was easy to give medicine to, he also gets glucosamine and fish oil and he eats them like they are treats. He is a sweet loving boy that is eager to please and will be a great addition to a home. Max is very much the independent dog who has a will of his own. He goes along mostly with what is wanted of him but if he lays down, it is best not to push him. Needs to know he is going to be touched, get his permission first. He is late riser in the mornings and enjoys snuggling down in his bed. He loves his food so it is recommended to feed him away from other dogs. He will wait patiently for his meal and takes treats gently. Max loves car rides and going for walks. His foster family is working on getting him to walk at a slower pace. He loves his toys and can be a little territorial about them, giving a soft growl to other pups. He gets along good with other dogs once he knows them. He is protective and loving to his people. Max would do good by himself or with just one submissive companion dog. He loves to cuddle and be told what a great boy he is. He is an awesome guy, and he is very partial to his Wookie Toy! He gets along well with other dogs. He is very healthy! He is a very loving boy. He is not comfy around cats. He is a ladies man and will follow his "lady" everywhere. He is good with men as well but pretty much ignores them! Understands boundaries and limits, and works best when they are set. He is a sweet and gentle dog. Doesn't ask for much. No children under 13 and NO cats. Would do best in a quite but active home with no dogs or only one other calm dog. Max Y only has trouble with little, loud barking dogs who are barking right at him. Really, he is a doll! A great and majestic dog! Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. They are also micro-chipped, groomed (if needed), and given a thorough professional veterinary exam to identify any health issues or potential issues. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Hello! My name is Maddie. Or maybe it’s Little Miss! Hold on, foster mommy calls me Princess all the time and Funny Face, too. It doesn’t matter, I will still wag my tail, jump up and down to see you, and give you lots of LOVE! I’m a tiny girl, but I pack a lot of energy and love into my life. My favorite thing is snuggles and cuddles. I love my people, I just want to be with you. I’ll keep your back warm at night, and wake you up with kisses! I *love* car rides. Traveling is my ‘hobby’ BOL! The first thing I do when I get out the door is make a beeline for the car. I make a great traveling companion. I love everyone I meet and since my hearing is gone, I can sleep long distances in the car, no problem! I don’t bark much. Other dogs don’t make me bark, unless I can see them barking and then I feel like I need to hold up my end. I love going for walks, and behave very well on a leash. No tugging at all! My legs aren’t as young as they used to be so sometimes we need to just amble along. I get to sniff all the smells that way, too. Woof! I’m quite the foodie, meals are my favorite part of the day, not counting when you come home from… whatever you do without me. Sharing my food isn’t something I ‘do’ so I have to eat away from my foster siblings. I spend most of my day sleeping and - if you are home – sitting on your lap getting pets and giving love. I’m not much for toys but I have a couple of things I do like to chew on. My only big problem is stairs. I can usually go up and down without a problem, but some days… my little legs feel a little tired, so I need a lift. And it’s important you keep the trashcans covered or where I can’t get to them. I am a fabulously creative dumpster diver, you would be amazed what I can get into! If you offer me a treat, though, I’ll come give you a twirl and leave the trash alone. If a little furry co-pilot of love and life is what you’re looking for, contact RMCR and let them know that Maddie is for you! Our dogs are temporarily housed in pre-screened, loving foster homes while waiting their new forever home. They are also micro-chipped, groomed (if needed), and given a thorough professional veterinary exam to identify any health issues or potential issues. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ My foster Mom says I'm the kindest cocker she's ever met. I am the dog that can go anywhere with anyone and always behave!! I'm very passive, obedient, and kind. Not much seems to bother me. Loyalty is one of my strongest assets - I never lose track of my brothers or family members and always follow, never lead. Together we enjoy sleeping and our daily outings. As any good cocker would, I LOVE my food but at times struggle seeing the food in front of me. I am looking for someone who is patient, structured and willing to take me on slow, leisurely walks to avoid soiling in the house. If you are interested in adopting this beautiful cocker, please go to our website for more info: www.rockymountaincockerrescue.org/adopt-a-dog/adoption-information/ Casey is a tiny little bundle of joy. Casey should have a dog companion. Casey is bonded to Buddy C 16-108, her longtime companion and they must be adopted together. She is a sweet little girl who enjoys running outdoors and spotting things to watch. History of chronic urinary tract issues from an unknown cause. Stable at this time with controlled medications and diet. She does wear a diaper at night just in case, but is almost always dry in the morning. Casey has had various diagnostic tests but the urinary tract issue remains a puzzle. She had GI issues as well but with a home cooked diet that is now behind her. Casey gets around so lightly on her feet she is almost like a cat. She does have one cataract but sees well with her other eye. She would bring much joy to a lucky family. He has been living with his companion Casey C 16-109 and the two must be adopted together. Buddy is blind from cataracts but does seem to see shadows and movement. Once coming to my foster home he learned his way around the house and yard rather quickly and gets around very well. He will even try to play with a ball on the floor. It has been heartwarming watching Buddy blossom into a silly little dog. He seeks human companionship frequently and will run to meet us at the door if we have been gone. Buddy loves cuddling and being pet. He is hesitant on the leash but will follow once he trusts his handler. There is a lot to love in this little bundle of joy! Buddy would really love to go to a home where there is another small dog as he has not lived without a doggie companion in the past. She will look deeply into your eyes with love. Katrina came into the rescue very overweight and with a good controlled diet she has lost several pounds and is looking good. Katrina does need help walking up slick stairs. She runs down just fine and has no trouble with outdoor stairs. She is a happy little dog who has come through some tough times before coming to RMCR. She is house-trained for the most part but needs reminders to go outdoors and will defecate sometimes when lying down if she has gotten spooked. All in all Katrina is a love and would do well in a home with mature adults. She is a joy to foster. He enjoys short walks at the park as well as being a lounge around dog at home. DO NOT let his being blind or semi-deaf fool you though, as his other senses are sharp for a senior guy. He's got a healthy appetite, It is safe to say Bob has somewhat of a sweet tooth Bob loves to play with his teddy bear,he also loves to play with his squeaky toys,to Bob, every box is a toy box! At night he prefers to sleep next to his human in a big bed.Bob is house broken, and makes noise or cry's when he needs to go outside. When on walks please be patient with the him as he tends to walk in circles due to his blindness. This doesn't stop Bob from being well behaved and great on his leash though!
