Posted Breed: Dachshund (short coat). Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. Julian is an independent little guy, who came to us from a neighboring county, where he had been turned in as a stray. He prefers a quiet home with few visitors and to be either an only dog or to be with other dogs who will not invade his personal space frequently. He is housebroken, crate trained, up to date on shots, neutered, and about 3 years old. He requires a good quality dog food for his coat. Julian prefers to be a couch potato, snuggling in his blankies on the couch or love seat, and will sleep there all night. He does not require crating when home alone, but will comply if required. He needs a bit of patience, and a new home that will allow him time to settle in and get to know new people on his own time. He loves to explore the yard on sunny days, and will spend hours on the screened porch in the sun when the weather is nice. Is this beautiful boy the perfect one for you? If interested in Julian please email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org for an application. For more information on this animal email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. Pet Helpers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit foster based volunteer rescue located in Fairmont, WV. We do adopt out of state to approved applicants, if you are willing to drive to WV to pick up your pet. If they are too young at the time of adoption, then it is your financial responsibility to spay/neuter the pet by the age of 6 months and you must provide proof for our files that it has been done. All of our pets are checked by a vet, given the shots appropriate for their age and any other treatment deemed necessary by the vet. All of our pets are adopted as indoor pets and are not be outdoors tied to a box 24/7. The pet you are adopting has been living in a home with a foster family. You are expected to take possession of the pet you are applying for within a few days of application approval. This will enable us to accept another pet into that home. More About Dachshund Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Breed: Cairn Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Senior
      Location: Fairmont, WV
Posted Breed: Cairn Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. ~~Precious Piper would love to have her own Forever Family! She is a sweet, 8-year-old Scottish Terrier weighing around 30 pounds. She came to us with substantial hair loss on her hindquarters due to flea dermatitis as well as needing spayed. She was also found to have mammary tumors, so the left chain of those was removed during her spay surgery after her skin condition had healed. A second surgery had to be done several weeks later to remove the right-sided chain of tumors. We, of course, had her tumors biopsied, and it was found that Piper has a malignant cancer. You would never know anything is amiss as you watch her run, hop and jump with excitement, then roll and scoot on her back across the carpet! She may have months or she may have years of glorious life left in her, only time will tell. She has been updated on all vaccines and is on monthly flea preventive. Piper is crate trained and housetrained as long as she is taken out on a regular basis (but may have a potty accident occasionally if you wait too long). She does well with dogs close to her size, but is a little intimidated by large dogs...we have not had her around cats yet. She also likes children and adults and loves to lounge on the couch with her human. Piper is fostered in Fairmont, WV. To request an adoption application for lovely Piper to share your heart and home, please email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org For more information on this animal email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. ~~Theo has stolen the hearts of everyone who has met him or read his story. For months he waited for someone to come back for him. He learned to survive on his own and waited and waited. One day a lady came to look at the house and tried to catch him but he was to afraid. She worried about him and started taking him food and water everyday. She even put straw out for him in a building to keep him warm. Then she called Pet Helpers. Two volunteers went out with a trap and caught him. He watched out the window and cried and howled as the van pulled away from the house. As if he felt if he left he would not be there when his humans returned. Once in his foster home he could not get enough human touch. Theo is estimated at 4-5 years old by our veterinarian. He is neutered, vaccinated, wormed and on flea preventative. He will need a home where he is the only dog or with an experienced owner that knows how to work with his fear of other dogs. Theo loves to be petted, get belly rubs and run to play with people. If you would like to meet Theo email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. He is being fostered in Fairmont, WV and his adoption fee is $150. For more information on this animal email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. I am Paw Paw Bones Starr and let me tell you about the good old days. Well they were not good for many years. I had a broken pelvis. I was never treated for it. I had to learn to maneuver in pain. It has healed, but I walk with a limp. I am not sure I remember my parents, but they left me alone in the middle of a field with limited mobility. I was missing hair. I had bad eyes and ears. I have received medical treatment, and I am doing great! I used to drag my hind end around. Now I can walk pretty good. I can go up a couple steps, but need carried down them. I will be on pain meds the rest of my life, but they are not expensive. I get along great with other dogs, cats and people. Foster mom says I'm the sweetest guy ever. I love going to McDonald's for coffee and pancakes. If you are looking for a special lap guy I am the one! Apps have to be golden like I like my girls and the arches! Paw Paw is 12 years old, he is up to date on his shots. He was also neutered and had a dental. Hank continues to search for his forever home. He has been in foster care since December when his owner abandoned him, and he was pulled him from a kill shelter. Hank is a very lovable eight year old hound. He loves cuddles on the couch, and he loves constant attention. He plays well with other dogs. Hank is a special needs dog. He is blind in one eye, and he sometimes has a little difficulty with depth perception. This disability causes him to get under one's feet, but he means no harm. Due to his food aggression, Hank would do best if placed in a home without other animals. Definitely a home without cats!! He needs a loving home to live out his senior years in luxury. Breed: Rottweiler-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Fairmont, WV
Posted Breed: Rottweiler / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. Ava is a 2 year old Rottie mix who was an unclaimed stray. We believe she has been an outside dog but picked up the crate training and house training really fast. She is around 40-45 pounds, vaccinated, spayed, wormed and flea treated. She has learned to sit in just a couple of sessions so she will be easily trained if you take time to work with her. She is a little high energy at times so she will likely do best with an active family who can give her plenty of exercise. Ava is used to a fenced yard so she still needs some leash work. Ava would love to have a running partner or someone who likes to hike. She loves to run but also likes to snuggle once her energy is burned off. Ava would prefer to be an only dog so she can have all of the attention but she does well with non-dominant similar sized dogs if given time to adjust. Ava is fostered in Fairmont, WV, adoption fee is $150. Email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org for an application. For more information on this animal email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org. Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Please contact Pet (information@pethelpersinc.org) for more information about this pet. Minnie, Harley, Chip and Rocky came from a Kentucky hoarding situation. When we first brought them home they would not even come out of their crates. They are still scared, but we are making a lot of progress. They get along great with other small dogs, they are now following me all around the house, and they absolutely LOVE toys. However, they aren't really sure yet of other humans and being touched. They are all under 2 years old, all under 7 lbs, and cute as buttons. With some time and patience, they will make their person a very loyal and loving friend. They are all available for adoption. We would prefer someone with some rescue experience, as it is going to take a good deal of patience, understanding, and some one on one time to get them to where they need to be. Their adoption fee is $150.00. They have been vaccinated, spayed, neutered, wormed, and flea treated. If you are interested in giving these babies a new forever home, please email adoptionisforever@pethelpersinc.org and request an application. Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher. Ruby is a Min Pin mix who weighs around 25 pounds. She is estimated to be around 5-6 years old and was rescued from animal control. She is very sweet with people and seems to be housetrained. She does better with male dogs or dogs similar in size but can be a little snippy with them on her initial meeting. Once she has a little time to get used to them she does fine so she will need a slower introduction. We were told she lived with 2 male dogs of similar size. She is a happy little girl and loves to share kisses. There are no cats in her foster home so we don't know how she is with them yet. She has been spayed, is current on vaccinations, wormed and flea treated. Ruby is fostered in Fairmont, WV, adoption fee is $150. Email information@pethelpersinc.org for an application.
