Posted Breed: Dachshund (short coat). *Special needs dog* Hello! I’m Precious but my foster mom calls me Pebbles. I am a beautiful black & tan mini dachshund of 5 years old. I get along with other pets. I live in a foster home with four other dogs and a cat. I am a bit of a princess and like to be snuggled and spoiled, as all dachshunds do. I also like to sleep late! Sometimes my foster dad has to get me out of bed. I like my bed in the closet for naps, quiet time or when the humans are not home. I do have to wear my Pro Collar though, but you can see in the picture that I don’t mind wearing it. What can I say? A princess needs her beauty sleep! I like to go for walks and play with balls and toys too, so I’m not always a couch potato. My ideal home would have an older child for me to play with and/or another dog that will play with me so I don’t get bored. I have Mega-esophagus (ME), but don’t let that scare you. It just means that a part of my esophagus is enlarged. That means I can’t move food down into the stomach like I’m supposed to. I eat my meals sitting upright in a Bailey Chair. It kind of looks like a dachshund-sized high chair. This allows gravity to move the food to my stomach. After I eat, I stay sitting in the chair for a minimum about 30 minutes so my food does not come back up. I'm used to sitting in my chairs after meals and settle right down in the bailey chair to wait. I know that if I sit down in the bottom of the chair I can rest my head on the side and rest. And my chair will come to my forever home with me. I eat when I’m hungry, usually once or twice a day, and am 9 pounds. So we can work out a schedule that works for both of us. I can’t drink water from a bowl on the floor so, while in my chair, I get fluids from a Mature Dog Supplement that my foster mom found at Walmart, of all places. It's like doggie Ensure! And I LOVE IT! I’m an outdoors kinda girl. I like it if you hold me in the pool or I can ride on a float with you. I have Doggles and a Life Jacket. My foster mom says we are going to try going in the Kayak. I can definitely be your on-the-go pal, we just have to be sure I don’t get overheated, just like with any pet. My foster mom says there is an excellent Yahoo support group for Mega-esophagus or ME, so if you adopt me you can make new friends with humans who have a pet like me. And my foster mom will teach you all about feeding me so you’ll know just how to take care of me when you adopt me! We have it down to a good routine so it will be an easy transition. If you’d like to take me home, fill out an application with my name on it. I’m in the Brooksville, FL area and I’m waiting for you! Please scroll to bottom of page for additional info about me and my email contact. If you know that I am your forever dog please fill out an online application at www.daretorescue.com and put my name on it. If you can not adopt me but would like to help DARE pay for my care while I am in their care please send check or money order made payable to DARE to: DARE 4495-304 Roosevelt Blvd. PMB 179 Jacksonville, FL 32210 You can also contact us at info@DAREtoRescue.com Even if you do not see a dog that matches what you're looking for, you may fill out a no obligation application and we will work to find a match for you. We receive dogs into foster care almost daily, so it is impossible to have every available or soon-to-be-available dog on the website.

Dachshund

A.K.A. : teckel

Height (in): 5-9
Colors: Solid red, sable, or cream; black and tan, chocolate and tan, wild boar and tan, gray and tan, or fawn and tan, brindle.

More About Dachshund Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). CJ and Kody are 8 year old dachshund/lab mix brothers, they have been separated and are doing well.. They are sweet and affectionate and obedient, quick learners. They have not spent a lot of time on a leash, but someone who walks them regularly would be able to quickly train them. While I have not spent a lot of time walking them because we have a ½ acre back yard, when they are on a leash they do listen to me. It’s easy work to leash train a good dog like this, and I am not a trainer. We would recommend a home with a doggie door as the perfect home rather than an apartment type home. As they are very housebroken with a doggie dog but not so much without access to a yard. They both like to talk to you and sing. They want to be rubbed, petted and would love to be lap dogs or right beside you on the sofa or in your chair. Overall, they are good boys who each need a good, loving home. CJ is neutered, up to date on his vaccines, just had a dental, and is on a diet and is losing weight. He is a good boy and just wants someone to love. If you think you are the right family for CJ please fill out an on line adoption application at www.DAREtoRescue.com and put CJ's name on it. He is in the Jacksonville Florida area. Location: Jacksonville, FL
Posted Breed: Dachshund (medium coat). A Bonded Pair My name is Charles, but I answer to Charlie. I’m a really loving, 10 years-young, frosty faced wire haired dachshund boy. I'm the first two pictures. My foster mommy says I’m not really “frosty-faced” it’s more of my coloring. I came to DARE with my son, Bo, who is 7 years old. He is the third and fourth pictures. We have been together since his birth, so I am looking for a home where he and I can be adopted together. I like to lie down in a safe area, but close enough to see what you are doing; I don’t want to miss anything. Belly rubs are to best part of our day, so a home with plenty of belly rubs would be our dream home. Hunting is the other thing we want to do all day; we are dachshunds after all and our breed is well known for our hunting skills. CATS are a big NO-NO for us. We also should not be in a home with other small pets like birds, hamsters, ferrets, etc. And lizards don’t stand a chance with us on guard duty. A well fenced yard is a plus because we really like to explore and hunt the lizards. We LOVE kids, especially ones who like to give belly rubs. We are crate trained and are okay with sleeping in the crate, but we really LOVE to snuggle and burrow under the covers in the big bed. We promise NOT to take the whole bed; you can have some space too. I'm very afraid of men. I don't bite or even bark, I just run and hide! My foster mommy keeps telling me no one is ever going to hurt me again, but I'm not so sure yet. But if there is a man in my forever home, and he will be patient with me while I learn to trust him, I bet we could learn to be friends. Bo will take on the role of letting you know any time someone is coming to the door. He also loves to give kisses while he sits in your lap. We really want a forever family of our very own with a fenced yard, maybe some children and as many belly rubs as we can get. If you think we are the perfect addition to your family please fill out at application at www.daretorescue.com. We are being fostered in the Tampa Bay area of Florida. Please scroll to bottom of page for additional info about me and my email contact. He is 15 years old, and because he is a double dapple he is also blind and deaf, but he is very active and loves to explore the fenced yard at his foster home. He shares his home with a cat and a few other dogs. Oscar isn't too sure of strangers so you must be patient with him on your first meeting, but once he warms up to you....look out...Casanova might have been a better name! Smell means everything to him since it is the only sense he has left. He can detect vibration and you should do you best to ensure he can detect the vibration of your approach so as not to startle him. He can nip if you startle him but it won't take long for you to learn how to communicate with him. Oscar would do best in a home with no small children. It is not the life any dog deserves but DARE is making sure Jared has a good life now. We want him to have a Great life, but that is dependent on YOU! You see, Jared’s Great life includes a forever home of his very own. Jared had a back injury at some point in his life that was left untreated. DARE provided him treatment, though it was far past the point where surgery was an option, and he is now walking with a cute little wobble. He does not have bladder or bowel control so a home that understands this is a must. He would love to be an only dog in a quiet home but he is okay with other dogs and might be okay with cats. He is an absolute love and cherishes large amounts of attention from his humans. I would be good with older children who will treat me kindly and with respect. I am very mindful and come when called. I am working on my potty skills, so I will need my new family to be patient and kind. I love to sleep in the big bed under the covers. My favorite treat is a rawhide chew. I am afraid of thunder and loud noises but I am sure I would be okay if my new family snuggles and comforts me. I am looking for my forever home. Are you my new forever family? She is only 3 years old but in those few years has experienced abuse that, while we do not know the details, certainly shows in her behavior. We believe that Bailey is a good girl who has had a rough start in life but most definitely deserves a forever home that is as special as she is! Bailey would really like a calm, quiet home of her very own. She is slow to trust, and does seem to be more attached to women, but is okay with men. She will need time in her new home to become comfortable and gain trust. She will sometimes bite strangers, as she has not learned to trust them and due to memories of her past abuse, so she you will need to remove her from those situations. She must never be crated as her abuse had something to do with a crate, though we are not sure what, and causes her immense anxiety. She will require a home with no children (and no plans to have them in future years as it would displace her from her home). She does use the doggie door but will have an accident if left home alone too long. As a special needs dachshund Bailey’s adoption fee is $150. She is being fostered in Jacksonville, FL. Please fill out an application with her name on it if you’d like to give Baily the quiet, safe, loving home she deserves. Posted Breed: Dachshund (short coat). My name is Shorty. I’m a miniature dachshund with short red hair & frosty face. The humans think I’m around 14 years old. I recently had a dental cleaning, spay & heart worm check that was negative so I’m all vetted and ready for a forever home of my very own! I’m a very loving little girl, but I do tend to prefer men. I’m a little hand shy so I will cower when you first go to give me attention, but when I knows that I won’t be hurt, I will relax and let you love me. I love to go for long walks and rides in the car. I sleep in the human bed every night, snuggled under the blankets, just as close to my foster dad as I can get. I do have accidents once in a while, so my foster parents try to encourage me to go out every couple of hours. Please be patient with me as I learn. I’ve only been with my foster parents a couple weeks and they say I’m adjusting a little more each day. I’ve learned to bark when the other dogs bark. I am protective of my food so I get a little snappy if the other dogs get close to my food. I’m a little possessive of the humans too. My foster mom says I’m a little sassy but she also says they have no idea what kind of life I had before that might be the cause for my behaviors. My foster parents give her lots of love, attention and belly rubs that I love so much. My foster mom says I might have a little cat in me since one of my favorite places to nap during the day is on the back of the sofa. I love my foster parents but I dream of a day I can have a forever home of my own! If you would like to make me a permanent part of your family please fill out an application with my name on it.
