Posted Breed: Dachshund. ATDR 2242 Jenna was rescued in a rural area where she was found injured with two large breed puppies. She was rescued by a good samaritan who couldn't leave her on the street with two babies. She was injured by another dog as she has multiple bite marks and scars on her head. In addition Jenna had a significant pelvic fracture and was not able to get around too well at that time. The pups have been rehomed by another group as they were not dachshunds and looked to be large breed pups. Jenna is great with people and other dogs. She loves snuggling in the comfortable chair with her foster mom and foster siblings. She’s a good laid back well minded girl who causes no problems for anyone. She’s also fully house trained. She’ll make a wonderful loving pet and companion for the lucky home who gets to adopt her. She's doing great, completely healed and happy an is ready for her next big adventure...she hopes that it includes a home to call her own! Please consider this sweet, affectionate and loving girl!

More About Dachshund Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Age: Senior
      Location: Pearland, TX
Posted Breed: Dachshund. ATDR 1023 UPDATE - 08/24/16 - Sweet senior girl Rosie is such a happy girl! She LOVES to eat more than anything on earth. She is a fan of kibble just as she is cheese or meaty treats. She is a good-natured little girl who loves to merrily trot around the house and yard with her tail up high and nose busily sniffing. She loves to be talked to, and will often trot over to foster mom for a head scratch or a back rub. She is a bit leery of being picked up quickly, and has never tried to venture up the ramp to the big bed---but her eyes are gigantic and have that far-sighted look that we seniors tend to develop, so it is believed she is just easily startled by rapid movement, particularly elevation. However, consultation with the vet revealed she has no actual vision loss, just age-related changes that resign the rest of us to bifocals. She does like to sit in foster mom's lap, but, let's face it-----being a lapdog pales in comparison to being a chowhound, so she will never enjoy it as much as she enjoys mealtime. She gets along well with the other dogs in the household. She minds her own business and never indulges in arguments or disagreements, like *ahem* we all know some crotchety, senior, spayed doxies do. That is just not Rosie. She has a "live and let live" attitude and enjoys her peaceful existence. She is looking for a happy home where she has a comfy bed she can call her own, a regular feeding schedule, and an interesting outdoor space she can explore. That is not too much to ask for a regal dachshund in her retirement years. 02/28/15 Rosie is a very sweet, frosty-faced girl. She is fully vetted but she has had some minor issues to fix. She is HW-, but she had some other parasites and just basic malnutrition that were giving her a dull coat. And she was just a skinny girl! She recently had a major dental so we are expecting her to start gaining weight and shining like a new penny very soon. She is a calm, low-key senior girl. She gets along with the rest of the dogs in the household by presenting an accepting but aloof attitude. She does not snuggle with the other dogs or play chase. Really, all she wants is a soft bed in a quiet area to call her very own. For some reason, she will not use the ramp to go up to the sofa or big bed. So---she likes to stay grounded and in her own corner. She also likes to EAT. She has not done any food guarding, but she chomps her meals down so quickly it appears she may have had some periods in her lifetime when food was hard to come by. She is a standard-sized girl--and needs to put on a pound or two--up from her current 16ish. She is VERY bowlegged and is just a hoot to watch as she trots around the yard. She loves to have her head and ears scratched. She would do very well in a quiet, one-dog household. She just wants a soft bed, a full tummy, and some love and affection.

      Breed: Dachshund-Jack Russell Terrier Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Young
      Location: Pearland, TX
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Jack Russell Terrier / Mixed. ATDR 1942 Brownie is an adorable, sweet and playful little guy, with tons of energy! He loves to play with his rope toys or tennis balls, and has a great love of the backyard sprinkler! Brownie has a very Jack Russell personality. He can be mischevious, but he has a very good heart. He can jump super high and he loves to run full speed around the house and back yard. He plays well with his foster brothers and sisters, and loves to snuggle on the sofa or under the covers in the big bed with his favorite person. Brownie recently went through obedience training. He is super smart and learns new commands very quickly. Part of his training was learning to cope correctly with his fear of strangers. Brownie gets nervous around people he does not know, but over the six weeks of training learned that strangers are not all bad. He will always have some fear though, so he would do best in a house that does not get tons of visitors. He will also need a home with someone that has been through training with a dog before, or would be willing to take him to more classes. He does best when his mind is kept at work. Brownie's foster mom will work with his new family to make sure that his transition is a smooth one, and to teach them the commands and training that he has received. He would love to find just the right people who will understand him and make him feel safe. Brownie is an adorable, sweet and playful little guy, with tons of energy! He loves to play with his rope toys or tennis balls, and has a great love of the backyard sprinkler! BROWNIE WILL BE ADOPTED IN THE HOUSTON AREA ONLY

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed. ATDR 2353 Rocky was found abandoned but tied to a tether in Lampasas, Texas. He was rescued by neighbors and brought to a vet in Austin. Rocky was emaciated, covered with ticks and fleas, and had both heart worms and intestinal worms. Those days are gone and now Rockey is one handsome boy with a beautiful shiney black coat! He is happy and healthy and shows no signs of his earlier life! Estimates put him at 5 years of age. He is very long, still skinny, and has legs just a bit longer than usual. “Longer legs” equals a super-jumper and runner. Rocky will chase and catch tennis balls for an hour at a time. This has become the high point of his evening when he and his buddy Ellie chase balls. Rocky is very affectionate and loves attention. Please consider this loving and very grateful boy!

She would be best suited for a home with no children and no other pets although it's possible she could do ok with a similar sized male dog. Betty should be in a home where she will have her human with her the majority of the day and would love nothing more than to be a lapdog. She loves to be right by her humans side at all times and would make a faithful affectionate companion.

      Breed: Dachshund-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male

      Location: Pearland, TX
Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed. Shooter is a seven year old red standard male with a wanderlust that found him in the local area shelter. Tracking back his microchip, we discovered that Shooter had a colorful past with a family dating back 3 years where he was a youngster pup without a fenced yard and would spend his days roaming the countryside in rural farm country. He spent a lot of time being picked up by animal control and eventually the family was asked to relinquish ownership. Shooter's second family owned a goat farm and again we can only imagine that he didn't have a fence to keep him at home because is is clear from his gait that he has suffered a broken pelvis in recent months that was allowed to heal on its own. Shooter doesn't seem to notice and gets along fine, but he is a little wobbly at times and is probably a lot slower than before the accident. Shooter wound up in another local shelter a year later miles from where his second family lived. We have tried our best to find them but they moved to the Houston area, where he was found and left no forwarding address! Shooter hasn't tried to leave once since he arrived in foster care - I think he kind of likes the structured life and his foster brothers and sisters! He gets two squares and lots of play time! Why would a guy want to leave? We hope the next time Shooter goes anywhere it will be home with the perfect family! That could be one with kids and other dogs, and just the right amount of space to explore, with a big fence of course! Shooter is the best guy ever and deserves so much more than he has had in his short life! If you are in need of a loyal and loving companion, this is your guy! Shooter is happy in the back yard with his buddies and equally comfortable in his soft bed in the house! He is easy going, a bit laid back and starting to play with the other dogs in his home. Please consider this great standard when you are considering adding to your family!

Posted Breed: Dachshund / Mixed. ATDR 2349 Phoenix – (def.) a sacred, mythical bird that arises from its own ashes, reborn anew to live again. This is the reason this lovely little spirit is named Phoenix. Phoenix was reborn after being thrown over a cliff from a car. Fortunately, some teenagers saw it happen and they gathered up Phoenix and took him to a local vet where he remained recovering for two weeks. A call went out to have him moved to a foster home and ATDR answered that call. Needless to say, it is taking Phoenix a little time to recover his trust of humans; but he is making incredible progress. He really enjoys playing with his foster siblings. Phoenix isn’t entirely doxie, he has a little mixture in there that just makes him more interesting. He is a double dapple, with limited vision and hearing; but he certainly doesn’t let that slow him down during playtime. Hopefully, there is someone out there for young Phoenix who has the time to help this little man recover his trust in humans and who can appreciate his gentle nature. His recovery so far is nothing less than his namesake; he has arisen from the ashes, reborn anew, and starting to soar. UPDATE 5/26/12 - Hello! It is me Phoenix!! I know you haven't heard from me for awhile. Life has been good and a bit challenging for me these past two years. First of all, we moved from my first home to a new one in a new town. It took me a little bit to adjust but I am doing great now. Remember how I used to be afraid of my foster parents? Well, I am not anymore! I sit on/in mom's lap and when she isn't home, I sit in/on dad's lap. I have two places that I sleep at night. One is on mom's pillow, above her head or right next to her. Sometimes under the covers even! I used to freak out when mom would put anything over my face. I will go in and out the door without having to be encouraged. I do it all on my own! Which is a HUGE obstacle for me to overcome. (Mom and dad used to have to chase me, corner me, and carry me in when they first got me cause I was sooooo scared of them) They rub my head and give me kisses when I come in now! I am such a big boy! A couple of month ago, my foster mom said that someone was interested in meeting me. So I got to go on a road trip to Buda. I walked like a champ on a leash, played with the other doxies there and was a gentleman in all areas. Mom was so very very proud of me! I was even a champ at Aunt Kim's house where we stayed! Foster parents say I have come such a long, long way from when they first got me. And I was such a scared little boy that had just been thrown off of a cliff and left to die! I am still hoping to find a furever home. If you have a place in your heart please consider me! I am a super good boy! Update: 6/1/13 Phoenix is doing fabulous!!! He has come out of his shell so nicely. He now sleeps either on my pillow, right next to me or under the covers next to me. Phoenix has NEVER been a fan of having his head covered and one night he was looking at the covers. I raised them and under he went! He was kind of confused and curious at the same time. It took him a bit to realize that he could sleep under them. After going in and out a few times, he settled right in and went to sleep. Now it is an every night occurrence. Phoenix likes to go on walks in the neighborhood. He is really good on a leash. Despite his deafness and tunnel vision, he really enjoys being out. His tail wags non stop when we are on walks. When I am home, Phoenix is never far from me. He watches my every move and follows right on my heels when in the back yard. If I am at work, or away from the house, he buddies up with my husband, something he used to never do. A good friend of mine was here this weekend and Phoenix hasnt seen her in over a year. He remembered her and was so happy to see her. He even allowed her to pick him up and love on him. Every bit of Phoenix's progress has been on his terms. My husband and I have not forced anything on him. Sleeping close to me was his idea. Then the pillow and now under the covers. We get out in the backyard and play chase with Phoenix. He is a hoot to watch run everywhere. There are two or three other doxies that we have that he runs and plays with also. One is quite a bit faster than him, so he loses her. Once she realizes that he has lost her, she runs real close to him so he can see her and then the chase is on again, until he loses her again. Phoenix has the most calm spirit and loving heart. He has also start giving kisses. Not often but he does give them. When you get a kiss from Phoenix, you know you have made him very happy! Thanks for asking about our fella! He is a great boy and we love him dearly!
