Email: ddrtxinfo@gmail.com Primary Website: www.DDRTX.org While we do not always have puppies available for adoption, from time to time we do take in an abandoned litter or a pregnant mother. DDRTX maintains strict provisions regarding the adoption of puppies. We DO NOT allow puppies to go to adopters until they are 3 months old OR have had 3 sets of their first puppy shots. In addition, we require a stringent Puppy Provisions Contract be signed and the adoption fee paid in full before a puppy goes to the home. Our Puppy Provisions are: 1.) The puppy still belongs to Diamond Dachshund Rescue of Texas (DDRTX) until the puppy has been spayed/neutered 2.) At 5-6 months old the puppy will be returned to DDRTX to be spayed/neutered by a DDRTX veterinarian 3.) The puppy will receive all vaccinations required by DDRTX by a DDRTX-approved veterinarian 4.) The adopter will provide a safe, enriching, and loving environment 5.) ANY exceptions to this agreement must be in writing and approved by the Executive Director Please Note: puppies take a lot of time and effort. They demand a lot of attention during their first year of life in order to develop a happy, well-balanced dog and an equally-pleased owner—including house training, learning good manners, basic obedience skills, and mind-enriching playtime and activities. Puppies provide many laughs and lots of fun, but they also require a LOT of patience and energy. PLEASE be sure that you have the extra time, energy, patience, toys, and cleaning supplies necessary before you bring a puppy into your life. If you do feel you have what it takes to bring a puppy into your home, please indicate that you are interested in a puppy when filling out the adoption application form. More About Dachshund Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Possibly a dachshund-poodle mix (as his recently trimmed hair is soft and he doesn’t shed), this little guy is 13 pounds of pure cuteness. He likes the outdoors, enjoys walks and following his snout to investigate different smells. He enjoys sitting next to people, having his belly rubbed, enjoying treats, giving kisses and playing with and chasing balls. Keep in mind though, that like all kids, his toys are HIS toys and he doesn't like to share! He is a good eater though he needs to be fed separate from others as his food is HIS food, sleeps quietly in the crate (or on the bed), is well behaved in the bathtub, good on the leash (using a harness), and is housebroken. He is somewhat unpredictable around other dogs and might do best as an only dog. He loves people and will make someone a great one dog only family pet! I am a cuddly, fun guy who has recovered from paralysis. I had a back injury, likely due to genetics, and I had the surgery to fix it. After I rehabbed, I can walk again. I love to rip apart my stuffed toys, run around with the other foster dogs and sit on my foster parent's laps. As if my good looks weren't enough, I am pretty well housetrained. I am quiet and easy going. My favorite place to hang out is in the kitchen because that is where the snacks live. Meeting new people is no problem for me because I am friendly and charming. Having someone home with me all the time would be a dream come true, but I can certainly nap while you go to work if that means more snacks and toys, but I will need attention and love when you come home. I enjoy the company of other dogs and pretty much ignore the cat. Love dachshunds and not ready to adopt or circumstances won't permit having a dog? How about being a sponsor or making a donation. Email: ddrtxinfo@gmail.com Primary Website: www.DDRTX.org Special Needs Really Cool Rita is a funny, black and white piebald dachshund, whose greatest joy is sitting with her daddy. She loves getting head scratches and will let you know when you’re not petting her enough. Rita is talkative and sassy. She’ll bark, run in circles, and roll on her back, just because it’s funny. She came to DDRTX paralyzed, and she has recovered, but because of that, she walks a little like a drunken sailor. If she spoke English, she’d probably curse like one too! Rita is one of her foster dad’s all-time favorites. She’s a joy to be around all the time. Rita gets along with dogs and cats. When she’s gets the zoomies, she’ll bounce around the other foster dogs and kiss them all over their faces. We’re not sure how she does around children. She can get nervous around strangers, but once she warms up, she’s the life of the party. Rita does need her bladder expressed several times a day, but the good news is, she’ll never pee in your house! She doesn’t have total control of her bowels, but with regular trips outside, accidents inside are pretty rare. Love dachshunds and not ready to adopt or circumstances won't permit having a dog? This puppy-sized senior has become extremely loyal to his foster family and has even decided that his foster dad is the BEST person in the whole world! In fact, at night Sammy likes to play with his toys with his foster dad and they have fun every night together. He has become sweet, loving, and cuddly with his foster family and is really a joy when he feels secure. Sammy is still dealing with past trauma and he is looking for a home that is very calm, very stable, and of course very understanding of his needs. He is a very small dachshund who is distrustful—however, once he gets comfortable with you, he WILL be a dream. Sammy deserves to be given a chance to learn what love is. Sammy is still working on his fear and anger but really has made some great strides with his foster family. He was well taken care of. Due to the health of his owner he is now with DDRTX. We're glad his owner has peace of mind knowing he'll be taken care of. He is good with people and would do well with one other small dog however no big dogs as they scare him. He likes to play and be chased around outside. He has a tendency to jump on the couch or chair and his foster family is working to break him of this habit. He is crate trained when no one is home but at night he prefers to sleep in the big bed under the covers. Romeo would like someone to "talk" to. Once he is comfortable with you, he will be vocal (barks when he wants out, when he wants back in, when his bowl of water is dry, when he wants you to play with him). He is super sweet and does not have a mean bone in his body at all. He is not aggressive at all, but scared and nervous all the time. He would do best in a quiet home, with older considerate kids, preferably with someone elderly or have someone at home most of the time that can work with him or someone with experience with fear dogs. He does not like laminate wood floors, the noise and texture on his feet scares him. He is slowly getting used to it but walks best on carpet and tile. If you're looking for a lap pet and someone to keep you company while you read or watch TV Romeo Too is your guy. Love dachshunds and not ready to adopt or circumstances won't permit having a dog? He's a huge cuddle bug, but youngsters beware, he cannot see well out of his left eye, so caution when going in for a hug! He prefers a very gentle touch and does not like to be startled or have his ears touched. Merle will take some patience in the beginning because he was not very well socialized. However, once he warms up to you, he is your new best friend. He is crate trained, loves rawhides, toys, and basking in the sun. I am the more serious of our dynamic duo. I must check out every nook and cranny of every room to be sure it is safe and if there is anything that needs further investigation. My foster mom says I am just plain nosey. Well, I AM a dachshund! Thanks to DDRTX, my buddy and I have had 2 great homes, each one for several years. Both homes had to give us back because they had to move and could not take us with them. But we are fine and we know we will find another loving home soon. We prefer a home with a doggie door so we can go outside when we need to. Goofy Hank likes toys and stuff but I just like to patrol things and be sure all is in order. We don't care about cats or other dogs, they are all fine. Nice, respectful kids would be OK too. We just need a safe place to hang out and be good dogs. So, if you have room for a pair, give us a call! Love dachshunds and not ready to adopt or circumstances won't permit having a dog? How about being a sponsor or making a donation. Every one of our dachshunds receives excellent medical care along with day to day food, love and housing. Reduced rates for pairs (when adopted together). Email: ddrtxinfo@gmail.com Primary Website: www.DDRTX.org My name is Topaz! I have been told that I have beautiful hazel eyes and gorgeous red piebald markings. I am estimated to be a little over a year old so I have a long time to learn the things I need to learn to be a more confident dog. I'm really not cool with other boy dogs or small dogs in general... I'd love to be an only dog, but I'd do well with a large female dog! You see, I worry that my stuff (bed, blankets. food, etc) will be taken away by other dogs and I don't yet understand how deal with those feelings so I get kinda grouchy. A home without small dogs or children is necessary for me because I am a big guy who plays too rough. When I first meet people I get scared and will run and hide so I need someone who is patient to help me learn social skills. As Topaz learns and changes, we will update his profile. He is ready for a patient home now! Love dachshunds and not ready to adopt or circumstances won't permit having a dog? How about being a sponsor or making a donation.
