If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Moses (deaf)...

      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Catahoula Leopard Dog (short coat). Please contact AHS (ahspets@gmail.com) for more information about this pet. . Acadiana Humane Society adopted out a fully vetted deaf Catahoula puppy, that they now want to rehome. We have no room and we are not equipped to handle a 60 pound deaf dog. Moses needs a new foster home, adoptive home, or animal rescue! Moses was originally rescued from being drowned by his breeder because he is deaf. We had him neutered, and fully vetted. Moses knows sign language. However he is very energetic and needs proper training to focus that energy. Because Moses does not know how to focus his energy, he has developed some nervous habits. He is current on all vaccinations. Is heartworm negative and on ProHart injection. He does eat socks, so has had two surgeries to remove them already. While he is good with kids, he needs someone without kids that will leave socks or other things out that would tempt a bored dog to eat. He would do best in a home with female dogs, rather then male dogs. However, he is fine with male dogs that he meets outside the home. To adopt this dog, please download our application from our website. Once you have completed the application, you can save it as a new file and then attach it to an email & send to us. A volunteer will get back with you as quickly as possible. Please be sure you have answered every question completely to ensure quick processing of your application. Look under Downloads for 'Prescreening Application' and click it to download. http://acadianahumane.org/catblogger/view-our-adoptable-pets/ Please be advised that our fax machine is broken. He doesn't seem to mind cats, however; he is very territorial when it comes to his toys and his food. It’s caused a few fights in his adoptive home, which is one reason he needs a new home or rescue. He gets along with their female dog, but not their male dog. He is fine with male dogs that he meets outside of his home. He loves ALL people and all animals. He is very playful with kids and other pups; he just doesn’t like sharing his territory with males. He is not real good on a leash. He would need someone to train him to walk better on a leash. He has never tried to jump their fence, but their fence is also 6 feet high. He is a digger. He has never dug to try to get out of the fence. We think it is more of a nervous behavior, or boredom. Perhaps is someone could work with Moses and train him, he would put that energy into something more productive. He LOVES mud puddles. We're not sure how he is around water. He has never been taken him to a lake or anything due to the fact that he is deaf and they only leash him when not in a fenced in area. His family hates the thought of giving him up, but his behavior with their older male dog is getting out of hand, and it would be best if he leaves when the right home is found. Also his nervous behaviors are becoming overwhelming to his family, and they would like to have a baby. He barks a lot for no apparent reason (perhaps boredom or wanting attention?). He will just run in circles barking around the house. His family has tried thunder shirts, rescue remedy, a DAP collar, lots of exercise to wear him out, everything short of drugging him. He needs an understanding and patient home or rescue that can work with him and train him so that his energy can be directed into a job that Moses would enjoy. He is a very sweet and gentle boy and has the sweetest disposition. His owners think he would make a great pet for a home with a large, fenced in yard, and an energetic female dog to tire him out. Are there any deaf experienced rescue group that can take him please? We have emailed the ones we are aware of. If you know of any, please send us their contact info., or share this listing with them. We do have his vet records already, and he is current on everything! Thank you! If interested in adopting one of our dogs, please fill out our prescreening application. Posted Breed: Terrier / Spaniel. Please contact Kristy (kristymcshan@yahoo.com) for more information about this pet. . Parker is an approximately 6 year old Spaniel/Terrier mix. He was rescued from the Iberia Parish animal shelter so that he would not be euthanized. Parker probably suffered some abuse at some point as he cowers when petted. But, he does enjoy affection. He loves kids and gets along with other dogs. He thinks he is an alpha at only 24 lbs. He would be best suited in a house with a yard, as he fears leashes. He is house broken. He was heartworm positive when we rescued him. But, he went through heartworm treatment via slow kill method, and he is now heartworm negative. He is neutered, microchipped and current on all his vaccinations. His adoption fee is $75.00. Contact Kristy at kristymcshan@yahoo.com if interested in adopting. Posted Breed: Rat Terrier / Poodle (unknown type) / Mixed (medium coat). Please contact AHS (ahspets@gmail.com) for more information about this pet. . Iggy is currently on hold pending medical treatment. We are accepting applications on him. Once he is finished his medical care, then he will be available for adoption again. DONATIONS to pay for his veterinary care are urgently needed! He can NOT have this vet care if we do not raise the money first. Please see our website for donation options: http://www.acadianahumane.org/catblogger Iggy is a handsome brindle and white dog. His birthday is January 16, 2010. His parents were a Rat Terrier and a Peek-A-Poo (Pekinese/Poodle). Iggy has very soft, wavy hair. Iggy is a small dog, with tall legs like a Rat Terrier. He has the underbite, jaw, and beautiful tail of a Pekinese, and fur like a Poodle mix. Iggy enjoys getting his hair shaved down once a year during the summer months. Iggy was a special needs puppy. Iggy apparently suffered abuse at the hands of his former owner when he was a baby. Because of that, he sometimes becomes frightened at sudden hand movements near his face. It would be best if he goes to a home with no small children to startle him. Once Iggy knows someone loves him, he is very attentive and affectionate with them. Iggy is very intelligent and wants to please. With proper training, love, and patience, Iggy would make someone a wonderful companion. Once he understands what we want, he follows instructions well. But, as an energetic young dog he does get distracted easily. Iggy is very energetic and playful. He loves to run and play. He also enjoys spending time with the people he loves. Iggy is fine with other dogs that he already knows. But, he needs to be properly introduced to new dogs or he won't like them. Iggy also gets along well with cats who like dogs. However, like most dogs, if a cat does not like him and tries to antagonize Iggy, he will bark at them. Iggy has some minor food issues that are easily solved by feeding him in a room or crate by himself. He doesn't like it when other dogs or cats come near his bowl while he is eating. This is another reason we recommend a home with older children who can be taught not to touch Iggy while he is eating. Because of Iggy's issues with food, treats, and other dogs, we can not bring him to adoption events. If you would like an appointment to meet Iggy, please send in your prescreening application first to show you are seriously considering adopting him. If you are approved to adopt, and then we make an appointment for you to meet him, you are not obligated to adopt him. This just helps us to make the adoption process run more smoothly if you do like him and choose to adoption. Thank you for understanding. Iggy is neutered, microchipped, up to date on shots, dewormed, and on heartworm prevention. Iggy's adoption fee is only $100.00, as we reduced his fee since he has been with us for so long. If interested in adopting one of our dogs, please fill out our prescreening application.
