    LINDY

    verified

    rescue
    Breed: English Setter
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Adult
    Location: Ramsey, NJ
Posted Breed: English Setter (medium coat). Miss Lindy is estimated to be 8 years old. She is a gorgeous lady! Are you looking for a setter that roos? Here’s your girl. Miss Lindy roos every morning when her foster dad leaves for work. She sure loves her foster daddy!! She is good with her foster mom but there is a definite affection and respect for men. She is the same way with our adult sons when they come to visit… it’s very sweet to see. Lindy loves toys and walks well on a leash. She is, however, very picky about whom she likes when it comes to her other foster siblings. Lindy definitely wants to be the alpha dog in the pack, but she has not won that spot at her foster home. She gets along well with the pack leader, Darby, as you can see from her photos. As for the other foster siblings at her home, they have learned respect for each other. Anyone interested in Lindy that currently has dogs needs to know that it will take some time, patience and extreme supervision before everyone will mesh. Lindy is also food aggressive when fed with the other dogs but is very gentle if you feed her in a different location or in her crate. She cannot share a water bowl either. Lindy does well when we feed her treats by hand and she will wait her turn with the others when we share our morning toast. Lindy did well when her fosters’ small grandchildren came for a visit, but again that was with a very close eye. We think she would do well with older children that would understand and respect her space. She has great house manners and has not had accidents in the house. She sleeps quietly in her crate at night and when we are away from the house. She loves to be outside and also loves to hitch a ride in the car where ever you are going. Lindy will sit when instructed and will also shake hands, but stay and lie down are still a work in progress. She understands the meaning of NO and we are working on keeping her from being a counter surfing. Lindy’s foster home does not have a cat but we are guessing she would NOT do well with a cat. Lindy is a great watch dog as she hears everything and will bark to alert you. Her health is excellent and she is super sweet and easy to LOVE. We are thinking she would do best in a one dog home; however, she does really like to play with other dogs, but only on her terms. So, if your home already has a dog just know you will need to take it slow with our Miss Lindy.

    DEXTER-ADOPT...

    verified

    rescue
    Breed: English Setter
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: Ramsey, NJ
Posted Breed: English Setter (medium coat). Dexter is a 2 to 3 year old, 57-pound male, and he is the perfect companion for a family without small children. He was found as a stray but had stitches in his ear so likely had received some level of human care before he came to the rescue. It was reported by the shelter that Dexter could not be with cats, but he has since been to the veterinarian and had no reaction to the cats at the office, but better safe than sorry so no cats for this guy. Dexter has been treated for kennel cough and chronic hookworm and is gaining weight and feeling much better in his foster home. It appears that Dexter was kept as an outside dog. In his foster home he required some house training but has done very well. He does not bark to go out or to come in so he will require more training in those areas. He does still have the tendency to mark at times when he finds a new area of the house, so his new family will have to be on alert for a short time, but he’s a quick learner! Dexter is willing to be crated but will complain a bit, especially if he knows the family is in the house. With a consistent crate routine he will do well. He has been left in a gated room for 8 hours with no accidents. With some morning exercise he seems happy to lie around for much of the day when the house is quiet. Dexter is generally an easy-going dog but can get into mischief if a fuzzy glove or yummy smelling dinner plate catches his attention, so he does need to keep working on his house manners. He is at times happy to be alone, just lying in the yard in the sunshine or on his favorite rug or sofa. Dexter also loves the snow and will do the cutest slide on his belly making doggy snow angels. He plays with a ball tossing it to himself, but doesn’t quite seem to understand the concept of fetch and deliver. He loves to run, and with a little leash training he could make someone a wonderful jogging companion. This love to run also may be the reason why he was found as a stray. If given the opportunity he has the potential to take off and not look back. As he became more familiar with his foster family and new home he was happier to stay in the yard, but he will be safest living in a home with a fenced in yard. Dexter seemed familiar with the tones of the invisible fence and therefore may have had that training before coming to the rescue. He became a bit sad after receiving the correction a few times and had to really be encouraged to play and explore and so the fence training was reduced. He would probably be happiest in a yard with a physical fence but could be slowly and carefully trained on new invisible fence boundaries. He is very respectful of gated areas in the house and is generally a people-pleaser. Dexter is a sweet but sad boy. He may have not been treated the best in his first home. He startles easily and especially at night and in the dark. He will bark in a way that can be intimidating if he is scared. He likes to involve himself in the household commotion but it also seems to make him nervous. He has been confined to the crate or a doggy-proof room during the night to prevent him from being startled. Dexter will do best in a home with no children or older children who can understand the importance of respecting his boundaries.

    DUKE

    verified

    rescue
    Breed: English Setter
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: Ramsey, NJ
Posted Breed: English Setter (medium coat). Duke is a 6 year old neutered male English Setter. He was an owner surrender, because he was not comfortable in a family with young children. Duke gets a bit nervous when a person or dog gets in his personal space when he is lying down and can be a bit grumbly. We think that he may feel as if he is going to get hurt by being stepped on or sat on. While in foster care, Duke did well when our 12 year old granddaughter came to visit. He was happy and relaxed like a true gentleman. We feel that Duke would do well with kids that are old enough to understand and respect his personal space. Duke came into rescue being heartworm positive. During his treatment, he had an adverse reaction to the medication used in the injection. He is now on a long term, slow kill treatment for the heartworms. Duke also has an old injury that is non-repairable; he has a bilateral tear to the ACL on his right leg. This tells us that he has had some fairly significant pain in his past, which may require arthritis meds in his future. Duke lives in a foster home with other dogs and he does well with all of them. He also lives with an indoor cat. When Duke is inside, he ignores the cats, but, on the other hand, when outside, if a cat runs he may give chase. I think it is safe to say that Duke would do well with a cat if that cat was strictly an indoor cat. Outdoors, Duke is a little more prey driven. For instance, Duke is not chicken friendly at all, and he has worked his way through a wire fence or 2 to get at the chickens. Because of his increased prey drive outdoors, we feel it is best that Duke have a home with some type of a physical fence. This boy is super sweet and he does enjoy being the center of attention. He is a talker and he will give you a long drawn out ROOO to let you know that he has to go outside or he thinks it is time to eat. Duke is not crated when we leave the house and he has proven to be respectful and trustworthy. When you return home, he will be waiting for you with more ROOO’s and his happy dance Do you have room on your couch for Duke?

    PENNY

    verified

    rescue
    Breed: English Setter-Labrador Retriever Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Baby
    Location: Ramsey, NJ
Posted Breed: English Setter / Labrador Retriever / Mixed (medium coat). This adorable little girl is Penny. She is a very affectionate, playful, 14 week old puppy. She LOVES to run and she is a girl that adores her toys! She is great with children of all ages (we have a 19 month old daughter and they are great together)! Penny is a girl that knows her manners and knows proper etiquette around people. She has not chewed on anything that is not hers, but she does have plenty of toys and chews to keep her occupied. Penny is 100% crate trained and sleeps about 8 hours through the night. She is also 90% potty trained, which is great for her age! She currently has 3 doggie friends in our house and she gets along with each of them very well and also respects their boundaries when needed. There are no cats in her current foster home, but she is young enough that she might be fine growing up with a feline friend. At the end of the day when it's time to unwind on the couch, she has no problem curling up and getting comfy on your lap. She's your typical happy puppy! Penny is young enough that she will adapt to most any environment. If you are interested in adopting this adorable little girl, please fill out an application because this amount of cuteness won’t last long!
