    Banjo (JoJo)...

    Breed: Miniature Schnauzer-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Miniature Schnauzer / Terrier / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Banjo, affectionately known as JoJo. This little guy recently lost his family in the blink of an eye. They went on vacation and hired a pet sitter to watch him, but decided they didn't want him when they returned and never picked him up. Luckily, the pet sitter helped this sweet boy find his way to rescue. JoJo can be tad shy when you first meet him, but once he warms up has a lot of love to share. He's done great in his foster home interacting with his foster family, but can be nervous and barky around some strangers who come to the house. He's a little bit insecure and needs an experience owner who who's not hesitant to correct and redirect him on walks or when he's pushing boundaries. JoJo is true to his Terrier nature and will push boundaries, but responds well to correction and leadership. JoJo's foster family is very fond of him, his foster dad, Greg, sent us this update: “JoJo is a joy. He is a dog, but just a wonderful and affectionate one. He has boundless energy and is always ready and willing to go, but when you don't want to engage, he will respect that and calm down. I have seen him fix his eyes on an object when on a walk, but to date, redirection has worked for me. After we pass the 'thing', within 10 feet he seems to have forgotten what had his attention and gets back to walking. He took a dental chew on a walk with Margo and buried it. Two days later, he dug it up on a walk with me and brought it home. Yea, he is a dog. We went to the Farmer's Market and he was a perfect companion. I had to carry him because of the rules for part of the time and he was cool with it. He doesn't seem to interact a lot with our dogs Stella or Cookie, the three of them just exist in the same space. I think he knows his place in the pack and hasn't tried to challenge it. He is adventurous but we have left him loose in the house for hours and haven’t found any damage or mess. It would be good for him to have an active and engaged home. I think he enjoys interaction and while he could exist in a quiet place, at this point, exercise/play is something he loves.” JoJo has lived with kids and other dogs. He is house trained, enjoys going for car rides, and loves to cuddle. The one issue they have seen with Banjo thus far is reactivity on leash to some dogs. He's great off leash with dogs, but will bark at select dogs on leash. His foster family is working to get him more comfortable on leash, it's still new to him and will require some time to adjust. Posted Breed: American Bulldog / Pointer / Mixed (short coat). Meet Eve. This gorgeous sweet girl finds herself homeless and searching for a family of her own. She recently arrived a high kill rural shelter in SC where her chances of local adoption are quite low. She came in with an embedded collar, which has healed well, and she is ready to start her new life. She hopes that she'll be lucky enough to find a foster or forever home in order to be able to come to the DC area. Eve is being temporarily fostered in SC with multiple other dogs, and is described by her foster mom, Kim, as calm and submissive. She loves to play, and will play gently with the other dogs, so she will make a great pup companion. She's also very connected to her person, and would do well as an only dog too. She loves to give hugs and kisses, and has very sweet, good nature. Her foster mom says she is very eager to please and learned the routine of her home quickly. She takes correction well, is very loving, and is going to make some lucky family very happy. If you are looking for a loving companion, please apply today. You can't go wrong with this sweet girl. Posted Breed: Dachshund / Wirehaired Fox Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Oscar, no-not-so-grouchy dachshund terrier mix. This sweetie recently found himself in an overcrowded shelter, scared and alone. He wasn't sure what was going to happen to him but luckily he was rescued and recently arrived in town in the hopes of finding a forever home. Oscar is now a friendly and happy guy who loves to give kisses and looks forward to a soft bed, toys of his own and nightly walks with his new owners. We believe however that he would do best in a home with adults, because he may get overwhelmed by kids. Oscar can be picky with his dog friends at first, so he needs a gradual introduciton, or would be great as an only dog. He's currently being fostered with other dogs, and took some time to warm up, but now does well with them. He's also good with cats. Oscar is still working on his potty training, and his foster mom is starting to introduce him to leash walking. He is ready to start his new life and thinks it would be great to have his family of his own. If you are looking for a scruffy little dachshund buddy, Oscar may be your guy. Please apply today. Zeus

    Breed: Siberian Husky
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Adult
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Siberian Husky (medium coat). This handsome Husky boy was found as a stray and was on the move for many weeks before he was captured. He was fearful and would not approach people, but bonded with a local St. Bernard and kept coming back to the same home to see his buddy. The family of the St. Bernard put food and water out for Zeus, and would update the local rescue folks who were trying to capture him. Once he was captured and brought to safety, he was taken to the vet for a thorough exam and thankfully is the picture of health. DDB takes in a lot of outdoor dogs likes Zues, so we were contacted to help. Zeus is currently being fostered in a home with 2 kids and 2 other dogs, and has settled in surprisingly quickly. He is still timid and new people and hesitant to be petted, but he's warming up quickly and starting to appreciate life indoors and being part of a loving family. Zues LOVES other dogs, and really needs another pup in his next home. He has a very sweet, gentle nature and is good with kids too... He will need a little time and work to fully settle in, but he's made great strides in his foster home quickly. See foster updates below... Coming to N. VA 6/10 FOSTER UPDATE - 5/19/17 - (First few days in a home) - "Zeus is doing so much better than I expected. He is still not really comfortable with people petting him, but will tolerate it by his neck. It's clear he's not lived in a house, before and going through the door from outside to inside makes him nervous. Once he's inside, he's ok. He does not seem to have any aggression issues, and is very sweet with the kids and my other 2 dogs. He takes treats super gently and comes back for more. He seems to like being around my two dogs. He's met 4 of my neighbors dogs while on a walk, he was on a leash and they were not, and he had no problems. He definitely feels most comfortable outside, but is starting to relax inside, and has already taken two naps! He's good around kids...I have three ages 7, 9 & 11. They have been able to pet him on his head, but he does have some fear of touch that I think can be worked through with time. .He comes close to you, and only reacts when you go to pet him. He's great on walks, he hasn't pulled or tried to get away. I assume he is not house trained but he hasn't had any accidents so far. I take him out frequently, always on a leash, so that helps. He is such a beautiful, sweet dog." FOSTER MOM UPDATE - 5/22/17 "Zeus is having a good day! I have worked with him a lot after researching the best way to help a timid dog. He has relaxed and will come to me for treats now. He is still skittish trying to get the leash on him, but it's getting a little better. I think he's enjoying being inside more and more. He wouldn't cross the threshold yesterday unless I pulled him a little, now he comes right in with ease. Our hearth has become his favorite spot to nap and hang out. He's an amazing dog. He's had no accidents and goes to the door or paces when he wants to go out. He doesn't pull at all when walking on leash. My street is very social. There are 25 kids under the age of 12 and 12 dogs. Not including the 20 or so adults that are out all the time with their kids/dogs. He is totally fine with all of it. Loves watching the dogs play. He also seems less fearful with kids than adults, and actually lets people pet his head and neck outside. He doesn't try to get away. Aside from his fear issues, he really is a dream dog. He's only barked once, and he doesn't chew anything either. I had to run out for 2 hours today and he was great with the full run of the downstairs. He's still nervous when you touch him, and will jump if you touch his back or feet. Once he calms down you can pet his areas, though. I just can't walk up and start with his back. He's very close with our dog Penny and stays near her. I think he needs a 2nd dog in the home to help build his confidence. Posted Breed: Yellow Labrador Retriever / Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Meet Molly. This gorgeous girl is a sweet dog who is currently living in a shelter in SC. She gets along with other dogs and possibly even cats (she tested ok at the shelter but it could change in a home environment). Molly knows some basic commands, such as sit and come. Being a little older, she's described as a calm dog and so will make a good companion for someone wanting a friend who is past the puppy stage. Molly is currently being treated for heartworm and once she's finished, she'll need a foster or adopter in the DC area who can help her out by giving her a place to stay. Paisley

    rescue
    Breed: Mutt
    Sex: Female Female
    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Paisley was one of seven puppies being given away for free in her community. She was taken in by a family with good intentions who also helped her siblings find their way to rescue and good homes, but they were not ready to add a dog to their home. Paisley's family just had a new baby, and already have toddlers in the home, and feel they can no longer give Paisley the attention she deserves. She’s been in the same who her whole life and is great with the kids in the home, but her parents have their hands full. She has not has a lot of socialization and exposure to the outside world and tends to get nervous around strangers. She's not aggressive, she's more submissive and timid, but is a flight risk when she is spooked on leash. Paisley is an active, playful young pup and needs someone who is committed to her daily exercise, walks, and playtime. With more nervous dogs, making sure they have proper exercise to drain nervous energy is helpful. She is being fostered with another dog and really learns from him. We think a dog buddy in her home will help build her confidence and serve as a playmate...She loves to play outside. She has OK leash skills, but could use some training on leash, like most young dogs. She is house trained and loves to snuggle, and will sleep on the bed with you, but also likes to burrow underneath the bed for naps. Paisley is a kid tested dog who would do well in a home that has some structure and routine that she can count on. She's still timid meeting new people, and needs more exposure to the world around her. We think a patient and experienced owner who has a little time and patience to settle her in will discover an excellent family dog. FOSTER MOM UPDATE 5/15 - Paisley has really improved on her walks and I am so proud of her. She now bounces around like a deer during her walks (cracks me up) and is no longer afraid of bikes and strangers coming towards her with one exception: she still gets scared when young men are running towards her, but we are working on that. She's such a sweet dog. She loves affection and jumps into my arms on the chair and in bed. Paisley is a young active dog who needs an active family. Apply today! Oliver

    rescue
    Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Male Male
    Age: Young
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Meet Oliver, a playful, active, friendly young bully boy who was found running the streets in Northern Virginia. He wasn’t chipped or neutered, and we think there is a good chance he was abandoned in one of the parks in the neighborhood. After a very active search for his family, going door to door, putting up flyers, posting on various lost dog sites, and multiple calls to the county animal shelter, no one appears to be looking for him. The Good Samaritan who found Oliver was wise to reach out to one of DDB’s foster families, which is how Oliver came into our care. He will be getting neutered and having all his vetting done this week. Oliver is currently being fostered in a home with 3 other dogs. He’s curious about them, and wants to play, but we are doing a very controlled introduction until he’s been fully vetted. He shows no aggression towards other dogs, so we look forward to allowing him to romp and play freely in the back yard with them once he’s recovered from his neuter. Like most young pit pups, Oliver is a higher energy dog that requires an active home and daily exercise to remain calm and balanced. He does sleep through the night without issue, and is starting to relax as he learns his family’s routine and has time to settle in. We have not seen Oliver with young kids yet, but he will be meeting his foster dad’s niece very soon, so we will update. He has a very sweet, social disposition, so he has the right temperament for kids. As is the case with many young dogs, he gets excited when meeting new people and likes to jump up when he greets you, so from that perspective, kids 7+ years in age would probably be the best fit. Oliver needs some basic training to address his jumping, and his foster dad is already working on that and says he’s responding quickly and has already shown a lot of improvement. He’s a smart boy and eager to please. Oliver is house trained and crate trained (he may whine initially, but will respond quickly to a firm “No!”). He has no food or toy guarding issues, and walks pretty well on leash. He may pull when walking past another dog, but is just excited to meet them. He’s a strong, active dog who will need a capable handler, but for being new to leash walking, he’s doing very well. Oliver’s foster dad describes him as a happy dog with a really good nature, who wants to be around people and other dogs. He’s very playful, and will jump on the couch next to his foster dad and lick his face to try to get him play. He loves to chase his ball, and will sometimes return it, but also likes to be chased. He’s a goofy and fun dog who will bring lots of laughs and joy into your home. Apply for Oliver today! BREED ESTIMATE: American Staffordshire GENDER: Male APPROXIMATE WEIGHT: 45-50 lbs APPROXIMATE AGE: 10 - 11 mos COAT TYPE: short ADOPTION FEE: $350 OTHER INFO: utd on shots/neutered/microchipped LOCATION: Falls Church, VA FOR MORE INFO OR TO ADOPT: Please go to http://adopt.ddbnova.org and complete the application. Breed: Miniature Pinscher-Unknown Mix
    Sex: Female Female
    Location: USA
Posted Breed: Miniature Pinscher / Mixed. Lucy is a sweet little pup who is looking for a family to love. She was adopted by an elderly woman in SC who was not able to properly care for her. Her owner noticed Lucy was having some mild seizures, but could not afford to take her to the vet, so she contacted DDB for help. Our team took Lucy to the vet, and had tests and blood work done, which came back clean, so they assessed she may have a mild form of Epilepsy. We changed her diet over to a healthier grain-free kibble, and our vet started her on meds to address seizures. Thus far, we have not seen Lucy have a definite seizure in our care. On one occasion, Lucy woke up and seemed a little disoriented, but recovered quickly. Her foster mom is keeping a close eye on her, but so far she's been an easy, laid back, snuggly pup. Lucy is currently being fostered with 2 girls (8 & 13 yo), and a senior Chi named, Wicky, and has done well with all. She's was a little nervous when she first arrived, but has really settled into her foster home quickly. She's crate trained, potty trained, and just a very sweet, good-natured dog who loves to go on walks, and enjoys car rides, and is going to make someone a great companion pup. FOSTER UPDATE - 4/25/17 - "Lucy is a great dog! Really sweet, calm, laid back, gentle, fine with Wicky and the kids, good with visitors and meeting new people. She gets excited and likes to play fetch, loves to go on walks, has perfect potty manners, and no seizures that I have seen. She's fine with the crate, fine with being picked up, and has no problems with my dog walker. All around an A+ pup." Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Staffordshire Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Honey was taken in as a young puppy, and his owner had good intentions but did not stay committed to her, even after moving back home with his parents. Honey is now the primary responsibility of the grandma, who is also caring for a husband recovering from a stroke. She doesn't have the time to take on a young, active dog right now, and has 3 older dogs and a cat of her own. Today, Honey spends most of her days alone out in the yard, and that's not a good life for her, so Christy contacted DDB to find her a new home. Honey is a very affectionate and cuddly pup who fancies herself a lap dog. She's very sweet, but also an active young dog who needs daily walks, exercise, and playtime. Don’t let her white face fool you. She's currently being fostered with a cat and 3 other dogs and does well with each of them. She would make a great family dog, and is great with kids. She can be a little excitable and jumpy when she meets you, but we’re working on that. After about 5 minutes with a new visitor to the house, she will settle down and is ready to snuggle. She's house trained, crate trained, and loves her toys and cuddling on a soft comfy bed. Honey is going to make someone an excellent companion, and we can't wait to meet her when she comes to town. FOSTER UPDATE - 5/6/17 - Honey has been in her foster home almost two weeks now, and is enjoying her foster family, the big back yard to romp in, her stay-at-home foster dad, and snuggling up in bed with her foster parents at night. She was instant pals with the resident kitty, and has been wonderful with the visiting 3-year-old grandson too. Honey has a very submissive nature, and quickly fell in line behind the senior pup, Belle, who rules the roost. Honey wants to play with Belle, but respects her space when Belle corrects her. Honey is a super affectionate, social pup who loves to play. She would be ideal in a home with kids or another young dog playmate and really enjoys the company of other dogs. She’s an ideal family dog who will bring a lot of love and joy to your home. Her foster mom calls her a “snuggle bug.” Crate trained, potty trained, walks pretty well on leash, and loves toys.
