If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

A volunteer posted a photo of them on FB as they needed to get out- the shelter was extremely full and these were owner surrenders which means they would be the first on "the list" when the shelter needed to make space. We agreed to accept them into our program and a volunteer kept them overnight. The next morning a friend of ours who is a strong supporter of rescue agreed to foster them- they were transported to her at The Canine Bungalow where they have met lots of other dogs in the boarding program and their families. These babies have had lots of socialization and love and are just sooo happy.. However, it is now their time to find their happily ever afters.. Temperament- Soooo happy, loving, and adventerous Energy Level- Sweet tiny girl who just can't get enough loves from everyone she meets.. In the attached video she had just met me for the first time and was so excited and happy to meet someone new to love. Dogs/Cats- Gets along with all the other dogs and cats. Housetrained- Currently using a dog door consistently. Such a smart girl.. These sweet, beautiful babies will make amazing additions to any family.. He was badly matted and just lived in a backyard by himself. A fellow rescuer pleaded with the owners to allow her to get him into rescue. They finally agreed. We have now had him for quite a while and he has made some progress but we feel he would greatly benefit if he had his own family to bond with and so he can get more one on one time.. He desperately wants to be loved- he wags his tail, and talks to us, and jumps around us when we get home. But he is still extremely fearful and must be caught to be petted.. He really needs a special person in his life. He is not leash trained, he doesn't come when called, he doesn't come to anyone for attention, he doesn't like being held, he is scared of being groomed, and basically he is almost feral; however, he is making progress -- baby steps, he is crate trained, house trained to use a dog door, comes when we yell treats and will take them from your hand as he stretches forward, acts excited when we get home, dances around us as though he wants attention, will occasionally allow us to pet him if there is another dog between us and he really does enjoy it, there is hope but he needs a very special person with time and patience and who understands that this boy is not your typical happy for attention dog who loves people.. We do have hope and feel with more one on one and more socialization he will learn to trust people but as of right now this is where we are at. This is a dog who needs a yard, a dog door, and no kids just due to his fearfulness. He has never bit anyone but he is terrified of being caught so will run and try to get away, but once you have him he relaxes a tiny bit but not much but in time with more and more holding he should continue to improve, Temperament- Very sweet and playful, but extremely fearful.. Energy Level- Mid level-- loves playing with the other dogs.. Dogs/Cats- Great with other dogs- should go into a home with at least one other dog. Great with cats Housetrained- Crate trained and using a dog door Lambough is a wonderful little boy who desperately wants someone to love.. Someone who will be patient but at the same time be very encouraging to come to them for attention.. I am sure once he realizes his person is safe, loving, and fun to be with he will make a drastic change and become the super loving little dog I know he wants to be.. They were quickly tagged for rescue however before they could get to rescue they all got sick.. The rescue refused them but the transport organization had found a foster already so they begged for help so they could save these 5 little lives.. Four of the babies recovered but now they need a forever home.. Someone to love them forever-- they have had a rough go so far in life but we along with their foster mom and the folks with Underdog are determined to give them the very best life has to offer.. Temperament- These babies are all a little standoffish with strangers.. But overall very playful, and very, very smart.. They have already started learning basic commands.. They get along with all the other dogs they have met (all sizes and ages) and are very loyal and protective of their family.. They will need more socialization and training to be the very best they can be but they are wonderful babies.. Energy Level- This big boy is very calm and quiet for being a baby.. Lots of training and socialization are in this baby's future so he can be the best he can be.. Dogs/Cats- Gets along with everyone. Housetrained- House trained using a dog door.. This boy is darling!!! He is just a big teddy bear. He is very calm and quiet for a puppy. He just loves to snuggle in your lap, and be held in your arms. He loves kisses, hugs, and belly rubs. He loves chew toys and to be chased around. He is very smart and alert. Picked up sit command in 5 mins. He has beautiful hazel eyes and is very gentle. He loves being the center of attention and loves to steal toys from his sisters. Even though he loves his loved ones and gives hugs and is a very loving boy we will not be placing him with small children just due to his fear of strangers. Oftentimes kids run around and don't always no boundaries and with him taking a while to warm up we do not feel it is fair to him or a child to go into a home with small children who he will be freaked out by... Adoption fee $150 includes spay/neuter, age appropriate vaccinations (4 for puppies), deworming, microchip, rabies vacc, collar and tags, training information, and all the support you need. A lady out there was able to pick them up, and hold them until rescue could be found..This way they could get altered and not continue adding to the over population problem we are currently experiencing in NM.. One of our fosters/volunteers saw the post and asked if we could bring them into our program.. We already had Micky and Minnie coming in from out there so we said sure.. Now we just needed transport.. Luckily one of our previous adopters saw our plea for help to get them from Roswell to Albuquerque and offered to let them hitch a ride.. A huge team effort for so many of our kiddos coming in needing rescue.. Temperament- Very sweet, gentle, and loving.. Energy Level- High energy puppies who love running and wrestling and playing chase with the other dogs.. Dogs/Cats- Loves her brother Jack (of course) and the other dogs that are in their pack but scared of new dogs when they come in... It's actually kind of funny because they get so worried and then once they realize they are friends they get happy again and start playing with them.. But initially they scream and act like the other dog will kill them.. They have not yet met the cats but we will update this soon.. I am sure they will be fine as they are still so young.. Housetrained- House trained using a dog door Jill is a wonderful puppy full of potential.. She comes when called and is just so sweet, loving, playful, and gentle.. She would make a wonderful hiking or running partner.. She and her brother will make wonderful additions to any family.. Dogs/Cats- Gets along with everyone. Housetrained- House trained using a dog door. She is fine in a crate- quiet and well behaved but due to her past she will potty in the crate (bad habit we have not been able to break).. Currently her group has a bedroom to themselves with beds and a dog door and they do not have accidents- we do let them take turns coming out into the living room when we are watching them and they are awesome dogs.. This is Chile Piquin- she is pretty small compared to her brothers but so loving and very cute.. She is a beautiful brindle with stunning markings. She can be a little standoffish with strangers and can be protective of her family but she does seek approval and corrects easily.. She is still learning what behavior is ok and what is not.. She is a doll - loves laps, walks, and playing with her toys.. . She is a cutie, loves to cuddle and her favorite thing in the world is to sit in your lap with her toy and watch tv. She is very smart and learns quickly. She loves the treat ball and puzzles. She is tiny but has a big personality and tons of energy. She can be rough and very vocal when playing. She is tiny compared to the others but can hold her own when rough-housing. Piquin needs a very active home that can tire her out and/or a very active dog that can wear her out- she should not be an only dog.. Even though she loves her loved ones and is a very loving girl overall we will not be placing her with small children just due to her fear of strangers. Oftentimes kids run around and don't always no boundaries and with her taking a while to warm up we do not feel it is fair to her or a child to go into a home with small children who she will be freaked out by... The best home for her will have a dog door leading in and out of the house and not a crate. Due to her being hospitalized she started using her crate to potty in since they were not taking her out enough.. However she is active and playful in the house and uses a dog door perfectly.. Turned in because her family was moving. Due to her super sweet and playful temperament the shelter hung into her hoping they could get her transferred to a rescue or adopted. However, she started losing weight quickly and became extremely lethargic. They needed to get her out ASAP- a plea went out on Facebook begging for someone to save her. We could not leave her like that so agreed to bring her in. We immediately took her to our vet to see if maybe it was something medical. It was!! She had Erlichea a tick born disease. She was started on medication immediately and is doing great. She will make a full recovery!!! She is a wonderful girl who loves playing fetch and wrestling with the other dogs and us.. Temperament- Super sweet and very happy.. Loves everyone she meets. Energy Level- Higher medium level energy.. Very playful.. Dogs/Cats- Loves playing with the other dogs.. She has met the cats and wants to be friends however they don't feel the same way.. Housetrained- She is house trained, crate trained, and uses a doggy door Quinn is just a doll.. I love this cute baby so much -- she is just so playful and full of life.. She is just sweet and loving - she will make a great addition to any family. She will go out on a foster to adopt contract until after all her medical is complete..
