Posted Breed: Dachshund / Miniature Pinscher / Mixed (short coat). Shy at first, but once she warms up she's your best friend. Beauty has a distrust of new people yet seems to LOVE small children. She gets so excited to see them, yet barks and growls at new adults. Once she knows you she absolutely loves you and gives you her all. She is a cuddler, she is as affectionate as she can be, loves to sit in your lap and give kisses. She likes cats, crates, other dogs, and food. She is not housebroken but can probably be trained to potty on puppy pads. She is a special girl. She becomes very protective of her home once she settles in. Want to meet her?? Please fill out our online application: http://members.petfinder.com/~KS87/application.html Beauty's adoption fee is half price for the month! $75.

If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      Franklin

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Rat Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Senior
      Location: Richmond, MO
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Franklin is estimated to be about 10 years of age. He is a small boy...probably 15 pounds or so. He's a total doll baby with people. Just wants to sit your lap and lean in for hugs. He's very affectionate. Franklin is good with other dogs...but if on a leash, behind a fence, or being 'held back' he'll bark and act ferocious to other dogs. He seems to be housebroken and he's crate trained. He is not destructive to bedding, furniture, etc. Franklin does have some scarring on his head, we don't know what it is from, but it doesn't seem to bother him at all. Franklin's adoption fee is only $75. He's a great little dog and he will make some lucky person a wonderful companion. Franklin has been looking for a forever home for quite awhile. We've added new photos...maybe his people will see his posting now. If you could share his posting on social media sites we'd really appreciate the help. He's such a cuddle bug and deserves to be in his own home.

      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Richmond, MO
Posted Breed: Newfoundland Dog / Mixed. Willow went missing on 2/14/08. She is microchipped and was outside for 10 minutes. We have never seen her since. We posted flyers and contacted all of the area vet offices. Willow loved people but didn't like cars so if someone took her she didn't jump willingly into their car. She had a red heavy duty collar with tags to our rescue and her rabies tag on it. We live in a rural area but we do have neighbors and no one ever spotted her. We will be keeping her listing active until we know what happened to her...

      Breed: Akita-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: Richmond, MO
Posted Breed: Akita / Mixed (medium coat). Gemma is really ready for her forever home. When she came from KCPP she was named Schwip, but we quickly renamed her with your help. She is good with male dogs and a total sweetheart when she knows you. She is a little unsure of new people. When she arrived at KCPP she had some pretty significant hair loss, but look at her now! She is GORGEOUS and so adorably fuzzy! She is located just outside of Kansas City, but we do allow out of state adoptions. Gemma would really appreciate your help in finding her home. Can you share? Interested in adopting Gemma? Our application can be found here: http://members.petfinder.com/~KS87/application.html

      rescue
Breed: American Eskimo Dog-Rat Terrier Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Richmond, MO
Posted Breed: Rat Terrier / American Eskimo Dog / Mixed (medium coat). Sparky is about 2 years old and around 20 pounds. He's a playful guy who loves to wrestle, cuddle, and be with his people. He does not like children. He is good with other dogs...both big and small and is crate trained. He's been getting some one on one training time with a really nice dog trainer named Jamie Eaton with Lewis and Clark Canine Coaching...just to let him work his mind a bit. He's a good boy but has learned that children can hurt and be rough and cause bad things (in his mind) so he needs to be kept away from them. His adoption fee is $150.

      rescue
      Breed: Chiranian
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Richmond, MO
Posted Breed: Pomeranian / Chihuahua / Mixed (medium coat). Fido is now available for adoption. He was a cruelty case at the shelter and our belief is that he was mistreated. He has trust issues, if you have 2 hands on him at once he gets quite nervous, but he has learned that some people are nice and he is willing to trust again. He loves us and is quite affectionate and loving, but it will take time to build that trust with a new person. No kids for Fido. He needs someone willing to go slow and shower him with kindness and gentleness because he hasn't had much of that in his lifetime. He is probably 12 pounds, 5 years old and a Pomeranian/Chihuahua mix.

      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Young
      Location: Richmond, MO
Posted Breed: Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Small adorable pit bull girl Petunia is a sweetheart who needs more work on basic training. She is very willing to please but doesn't know what is expected of her. I believe she was a house dog at one time. She was found as a stray but her nails were painted blue. She had to sit still and allow that...most likely cuddled up on a couch next to her owner. She was never found at the shelter and our rescue ended up pulling her to help make room so that they didn't have to kill as many dogs that week. Petunia has leash aggression issues with other dogs. This is a workable issue, but this is something her new owner needs to be aware of and willing to work with her on.

Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever / Mixed (short coat). Coco is around 8 years old. She's as sweet as can be. She's a little timid when she doesn't know you, but once she knows you she's a total love bug. Coco is housebroken and has been ok when left alone loose in the house, but she doesn't do well if locked in a bedroom. She wants to be with her people. She is good with some dogs and good with some cats. She's a shy girl...so she'd prefer a quiet home. Looking for a sweet calm dog that likes to cuddle? She's your dog! She is about 40 pounds and has the softest coat...not a labby coat at all.
