More About German Shepherd Dog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

      November

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Spaniel / Mixed (medium coat). November is a very handsome black Aussie/spaniel mix or perhaps border collie mix with a white chest who was brought to the shelter from a hoarding situation, along with numerous other dogs who are in desperate need of new homes. Most of these dogs are extremely frightened in the shelter and are very hesitant to allow physical contact. Those who do allow contact shy away from being petted and most of them refuse to accept treats. All of them really need to be treated with patience and kindness, and they need assistance in becoming more socialized. It seems that gentle, affectionate human contact is totally foreign to them. They are all very nice looking dogs and their are some potentially wonderful, loving pets and companions to be found among them, but they really need and deserve a chance. Potential rescues, fosters, or adoptive families should contact the shelter at (256)771-7889. To fill out an adoption application, go to http://limestonepets.org/website/adoptApp.php?species=Dog

      Sugg

      rescue
Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier / Mixed (short coat). Sugg is a sweet, but very frightened big boy who is very disoriented in the shelter and is hesitant to allow contact. He is confused, and he ran a lot when I was with him, but he did stop a couple of times and let me really pet him. He even ran between my legs several times while I was trying to get his photos, so he is not afraid of people, just the environment. He is only about 10 months old, but it is evident that he has not been treated for what appears to be a flea allergy, because he has significant hair loss on his hind quarters. Sugg is very sweet, and he deserves a safe, secure home where he will be loved and cared for. There is no stray hold on this sweet boy. Please come by the shelter and spend some time with him in the yard. He needs to be loved. To fill out an adoption application, go to http://limestonepets.org/website/adoptApp.php?species=Dog

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Labrador Retriever / Mixed. Tisdale is another of our little furry friends who has ended up lost from his owner and ultimately as a ward of the shelter, at least temporarily. Hopefully his owner will find and reclaim him. Tisdale is a sweet young boy with an air of mischief about him, along with a very affectionate personality. He also seems very intelligent and inclined to learn with the right teaching. Tisdale could be taught basic commands very easily with a little patience and a few treats. Tisdale is about 3-4 months of age and would love to have a child or children to learn, grow, and play with. He will make a wonderful pet and companion for anyone. Owen

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier. Owen needs a break. Actually, this big boy needs a miracle. He is an older bulldog mix who was brought to the shelter as a stray along with two other dogs and a cat, all of which have been reclaimed. This big baby is still at the shelter. Owen, unfortunately has an intimidating appearance and is of a breed that has unfairly (as a whole), been stigmatized as aggressive. Owen is a big, lovable sweetheart who loves his treats, loves to play, and will take all of the loving you will give him. Owen likes toys, especially squeaky balls, and he will tease and play "keep away" as long as you will play with him. The most likely way to get him to drop a ball is to offer him a treat, and even that doesn't always work. This big boy is a "people dog" and he literally begs for attention and affection. He will love you forever if you will just drop by the shelter for a visit and maybe bring him some Pupperonies of a couple of Oinkies. Owen has been at the shelter so long that his stray hold has expired, so he is immediately adoptable. Owen needs a happy, loving, caring family that will understand his size and strength and keep him safely away from small children or frail, elderly members. He is not aggressive, but because of his size and playfulness, he might be more than a child or older person can handle. Pleaase contact the shelter at (256)771-7889 for more information. Owen is rapidly becoming a favorite of the shelter's staff! To fill out an adoption application, go to http://limestonepets.org/website/adoptApp.php?species=Dog

      Location: USA
Posted Breed: American Pit Bull Terrier (short coat). Jester is a sweet big boy with a lean body and an affectionate nature. One can only guess why this sweet boy's ears were ever cropped, because even though they do cause Jester to present a somewhat intimidating appearance. he is a very sweet dog. Jester is at a disadvantage because of his black coloring, his breed Lab/bulldog mi), and the look presented by his ears, but he has wonderful potential as a loving pet and companion. Jester was brought to the shelter as a stray. If this sweet big boy is not reclaimed by his owner, he will need a new home and family. Agatha

      Breed: Bulldog
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Bulldog (short coat). Sweet Agatha was found at the river and brought to the shelter as a stray. She was by herself, but she has recently had puppies. She is somewhat aloof and distracted, and acts as if she is searching for something when she is in the yard. Perhaps she is searching for her puppies. Agatha is a very sweet girl with a patient, gentle temperament, and she is very affectionate. She does sometimes seem to have a sad countenance, and I'm sure she would have made a great mother for her puppies, just as I'm even more certain that she will be a wonderfully gentle, loving, and loyal pet and companion for her new family. Agatha will be held at the shelter until her stray hold expires unless she is reclaimed first. Assuming she will not be reclaimed, she will be made available for adoption. rescue
      Breed: Mutt
      Sex: Female Female
      Age: Adult
      Location: USA
Posted Breed: Terrier / Mixed. Penelope was surrendered to the shelter by her owner along with her companion, Charlene, with whom she is very tightly bonded. Penelope and Charlene are terrier mixes, and are fully mature. Both of these girls are absolutely terrified in the shelter, but the owner says they are both very sweet. They cower and try to keep as much distance as possible between them and anyone who approaches them, but they don't appear aggressive as a result of their fear, and when approached cautiously and patiently they will hesitantly submit to being petted. I spent a bit of time with them and was eventually able to pet them. I didn't see any sign of aggression during the time I was with them, but they do need to be approached and cared for very carefully and with patience and understanding, until they adjust to new surroundings. It has to have been very traumatic for them to have been given up by the only family they have ever known. These two girls each have a lot of potential to become loving and loyal pets and companions if they are given the opportunity to overcome their fears. There are precious, sweet, loving souls hiding beneath the fearful appearance and temporary scared behavior of these little girls. For more information regarding Charlene and Penelope, please call the shelter at (256)771-7889. To fill out an adoption application, go to http://limestonepets.org/website/adoptApp.php?species=Dog
