More About German Shepherd Dog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Posted Breed: Chihuahua (short coat). Rocky lost his home due to no fault of his own. His mom has uncontrolled diabetes and is on dialysis. Posted Breed: Shepherd / Mixed (medium coat). Bubbles was reported as an injured dog running the streets of Harrisburg, to Find Toby in PA. She was found tied to a front porch with no shelter, food or water in 16 degree weather. With a quick knock on the door, the owner surrendered Bubbles . She is approximately a year and a half old. Possible german shepherd lab mix. She is such a sweet baby that had a rough start in life. We were told she was hit by a car almost a year ago. She had a severely injured leg. The owner stated she took her to the vet and they told her that she needed surgery. The owner could not afford vet care. So her leg injury was left untreated. She had no idea what treats or toys were when she came to us. She has been doing wonderful in her foster home. She loves to give kisses. She does not chew anything up in the house nor has she even scratched at a door. She's a sweetheart. She is very affectionate and just wants to be loved. We took her to the vets where xrays were done. Bubbles has lived in pain daily for the past year. He said had the leg been treated when the initial injury happened, the knee popped out of socket, it would have been an easy fix. However, at this point, she had no elbow left, the bones were misaligned and all her muscles were like a rock. We made the decision to amputate the leg and although it may seem traumatic, this girl has bounced back and has taken on a whole new life. She is so full of energy and lives her days free of pain and sadness. Do not let her handicap scare you away...she is very active and can run with the best of them!!

      Location: Lewistown, PA
Posted Breed: Black Labrador Retriever (medium coat). Moose We were contacted by a family member of the owner of a 10 month old lab puppy. They explained the owner could no longer keep and she feared she would have to put him down. We were told that the owner's young son had gone to school with black and blue marks on his arms. CYS was contacted and she was called into the school. When they questioned her as to how they occurred, she told them their d ... og. They felt they would have to euthanize him!?? A 10 month old puppy? This child is autistic with violent outbursts. The psychologist suggested the single mother of a young autistic child get a dog. Well... we may also have suggested they get a dog...but this would probably be a highly trained service dog that could deal with the situations he was going to be put into. Definitely NOT a puppy!! Why do we tell you this? Because, this is not the first time an animal and a family has suffered at the advice of "professionals". This poor boy lost his dog, this poor dog lost his family. When we met him, he continually bit at the transporters arms, jumped up constantly and alligator rolled several times. Honestly, the best thing for him was to be taken into rescue. Fast forward to 5 months later. Meet the new and improved Moose. He is available now! He is GREAT with dogs!! He loves love. He still needs correction, but is redirected easily. His only fault is he is scared and extremely reactive to a blow dryer or vacuum. If you are interested in adopting this handsome boy, please fill out an application thru our temp website http:// odaat.rescuegroups.org/

Posted Breed: Australian Cattle Dog/Blue Heeler / Shetland Sheepdog Sheltie / Mixed (long coat). Hi! I'm Second short for Second Chance. That's my new name to go with my new life!!! I was tied outside to a box for my whole life. People wanted to rescue me (and fed me) for the past two years and my former owner wouldn't give me up. They had a house fire in Oct. and they left..but they left me there tied to my box in yard. My New Mom named me "Second Chance". I get to live inside now!!! I'm doing really well inside despite the fact that I'm blind. I like the other dogs in my house, but they don't know I can't see. I get scared when they bump into me, and sometimes snap (hollar) at them. There are kitties in my new house too...I don't mind them at all..they are afraid of me..I think, and I can't see them. I like a house that is simple, and doesn't change the furniture around. I love attention!!! I would like to have a person all for myself! I don't need a big yard or a fence just someone who will love me, and show me around. To read more of my story check out what I wrote (with Mom's help) on my Mom's facebook page! https://www.facebook.com/notes/pamela-j-klinger/second-chance/1281719531849717

      Rudy

      verified

      rescue
      Breed: Chihuahua-Unknown Mix
      Sex: Male Male
      Age: Adult
      Location: Lewistown, PA
Posted Breed: Chihuahua / Mixed (short coat). Rudy is a Chi or Chi mix, estimated to be between 1-3 years old. He was a stray caught after at least one month of ... running on his own between mid November and mid December. HUGE Thanks to ALL the ladies who worked tirelessly to trap him, networked to find owner and foster him. They could not believe how he survived the weather, hawks, coyotes, and car and school bus traffic in Westmoreland County PA, but he did. His rescuers all agreed he looked like a tiny fawn, and being a Christmas miracle, they named him Rudy (for Rudolph). When caught, Rudy was skin and bones with every kind of parasite both internal and external. He could barely stand and the vet thought he could not have survived out there more than another day. He was barely 6 pounds. After 2 weeks of TLC, Rudy weighed in at 9 pounds with all ticks, fleas, and worms gone! Rudy's personality has blossomed. He needs only about 10-15 minutes to warm up to new people. He likes both men and women. He is doing very well with his foster's dog and cat. He likes to chase the cat but in a playful, not mean, way. He has not been adequately kid-tested but does not like to be startled or poked so a home without small children would be best. While he can be playful and even dance for you, he is most content to snuggle up on a lap or next to you on the couch. He loves to be held. He is sweet, funny and very loveable! While he can have a bit of the Chi attitude, he is not yappy and only barks when someone comes to the door or he hears noises outside. Rudy is crate trained, pee pad trained, but still likes to go outside (when recent weather permits) for potty breaks. He walks very well on a leash. Rudy is a wonderful boy who has been through a lot a deserves a wonderful home of his own!
