More About German Shepherd Dog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

Hello, allow me to introduce myself, my name is Champ. I don't know how to tell my rescue friends what my real name was but they call me Champ. You see, I was abandoned in very bad health and I was hiding out for a couple weeks before I let someone catch me. I was very sick and scared. Animal control picked me up and took me to the shelter where some very nice people made friends with me and took care of me. A few days later I was allowed to go with the great folks at this rescue. I weighed over 100 lbs the first time I saw the vet but I was starving and technically underweight. My heart didn't work right and I had those nasty heartworms in me. The nice doctors drew 40 lbs of fluid off my abdomen. I started feeling better and started eating better. I went for short walks every day and started getting my strength back. I am now well enough to be considered for adoption and my heart sounds normal (whatever that means). I love to eat and I love long walks. I tend to get in trouble for trying to chase the cat or the little dog. I am crate trained but I don't want to be in my crate a lot, especially when the pesky little dog is teasing me. If you have a comfortable dog bed, good food and like to walk, I am the dog for you. No cats or small pesky dogs allowed in my clubhouse. I like to ride in the car and I am a "people person" , er dog. I might need to continue taking medicine for my heart, but otherwise all I need is food (I love to eat), lots and lots of love, long walks, a warm place to sleep and regular visits to the vet to make sure I'm ok. **12/27/2016 Chanp is still heartworm positive and we are consulting with the vet to consider HW treatment at this time.

Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog / Mixed (short coat). Journey is a smart, lively, pup who loves everyone. She came from a small shelter and she had mange and needed a better home than the one she started out in. We're not sure what she is, we have sent off a DNA test just for kicks. She loves to cuddle but when she's on the floor she is in 4 paw drive: She digs in and runs around. She loves to play with squeaky toys. She doesn't mind a little rain but she's not fond of monsoons. Journey would be excellent at nosework. She won't be very big. Journey gets along great with dogs of all sizes. She wants to chase the kitty just for fun but she doesn't want to hurt the cat. She is great with people and kids, even small kids, but she might be best as an only dog. Apparently she thinks the word Queen should be in front of her name. Sheba is about 5-7 years old now, best guess. She is good with cats and horses and kids, but not some dogs, especially smaller female dogs. Sheba is fairly laid back, not super hyper. If you are interested in Sheba, please contact us.

She is spayed, and up to date on all her shots, and on heartworm prevention. She loves people and other dogs, we don't know how she is with cats. Active dog, needs big fenced yard. Would do well with Elementary school age kids, or older kids. Half Border collie and half English Pointer. She points, ;looks like half size English pointer with black and white color pattern of Border Collie and she lays down like one watching a herd. Good dog for someone that jogs or runs. Not an apartment dog.

Zena was left at a shelter with 11 puppies. Sadly one of the pups didn't make it before we were able to pull them out. She is super sweet and has been a good mama to her babies so now it is time to find her a home of her own. Zena is now spayed and ready for her own home. She can jump fences so she requires a minimum of 6 foot fence. Zena needs proper introductions to other dogs but does not aggressively go after them. She really would love to run and chase cats and squirrels.
