Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hi there! Bonita is my name and chasing tennis balls is my game! I am a 5 year old, solid black, gorgeous, female GSD. My original owner purchased me from a breeder but had to find me a new home due to financial hardships. I am about 82 lbs and very athletic. I love to go on car rides and walks/runs every opportunity that I get. I’m very protective of my house and will alert to strange noises or people. No cats or small dogs for me but I love to play with medium to large dogs. I would be happy to have older children in my forever home but no young children please...I'm afraid of them. I love to chase (especially tennis balls), toys, cats, squirrels, lights ...just about anything that moves. I have been working on my confidence since I'm a little timid in new situations. I walk very well on a leash and know my commands, even a few in German. I love to sleep in my crate or dog bed but I do have a tendency to sneak on the furniture when no one is home...don't tell my foster! I am very energetic and full of life and if you have treats I will be your best friend. Are you my new family? I'm being fostered in Elon, NC! Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. If you have any questions about the adoption process please contact sgsrescue@gmail.com .

More About German Shepherd Dog Breed
If you’re looking to adopt a dog and don’t know where to start, puppyfinder.com is an excellent source for information about adopting a dog and will connect you with hundreds of shelters across the US that have adoptable puppies and older dogs waiting for forever homes.
  1. Do your research – find out what types of dogs would be a good fit for your lifestyle and the activity level of your family. Also keep in mind the grooming needs of certain breeds that might require frequent maintenance.
  2. Decide what you can handle – before you get sucked in by all the adorable puppy eyes you’re about to see, think long and hard about the appropriate age dog for your family or if you are capable of caring for a special needs dog. Puppies are a lot of work, if you don’t have time for potty training and obedience classes you’ll want to consider an older dog. There are plenty of middle aged, vibrant dogs up for adoption as well as many senior dogs that would be a great fit for a family looking for a more subdued dog with lots of love to give.
  3. Learn about the shelters and their adoption policies – It might be easier to start looking at shelters within a certain radius of home but don’t be afraid to venture out to other states as well. Many states have larger populations of adoptable dogs and their shelters are willing to transport pets to suitable adopting families. Some shelters might have requirements for a home visit, a fenced yard or require you to visit the pet multiple times before you commit to adopting. Understand that the shelters are doing their best to place the pets in suitable homes and these requirements are in the best interest of both you and the pet.
  4. Start looking… Once you know what you’re looking for and what to expect you can start your search through thousands of adoptable dogs. PuppyFinder allows you to search by age, breed, location and gender.
  5. Meet in person. Whenever possible it is best to meet the animal in person before agreeing to bring them into your life. Even though photos and descriptions can tell you a bit about a dog, you can’t get a true feeling for the animal until you are able to interact with them and make sure they are a good fit for your entire family, including other pets.

I will chase bugs with them all day long. I get along with all dogs, big or little. I will bark at things that I think should not be here, but am easily corrected. All you need to do is ask me nicely, I will do anything you want. I am doing better on a leash, I will even come when you call me now. I love to be brushed and will sit patiently while you brush. I will chase a ball until your arm gets tired - most the time I bring it back to you. I've shown interest in a cat, but only because everybody else did. I think I would be okay with a dog savvy cat. My mom can test me, I will do anything for her. I will walk with you, run with you, play ball with you, or lay with you and watch a movie. I will be anything you want me to be. Don't you want to make me your own? Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Posted Breed: German Shepherd Dog (medium coat). If you're interested in adopting any SGSR dog, please read about our Adoption Process and fill out an Adoption Application. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. This is Jake, a six year old Bi colored German Shepherd. He's most likely been an outside penned dog for the majority of his life with little training, although he has come a long way and has transitioned well to indoor life. Jake likes to think that he is an alpha dog with a moderate energy level. When Jake entered the rescue, he was heartworm positive, but has completely recovered with flying colors. Jake has a great disposition as he is very playful, intelligent and curious. He gets along well with his older foster fur sibling but tends to want to be the center of attention. He's not been around cats that we know of but will chase and bark at them if he sees one, or they happen to wander in the yard. He is very food motivated and gets really excited at feeding time and love treats. Jake has been working on his manners and learning the rules of being in the house. Sitting, waiting and shaking before eating. Sitting & waiting to go out and come in from outside and loading in the truck, and some basic obedience training. Jake is now fully housebroken and crate trained, although he doesn't need to be crated. Jake would do best with a family that will develop his unlimited potential. Jake has not been around small children but is a loving dog that does not jump on people or chew on hands. Jake loves to go for walks but needs to learn not to pull on his leash. Jake likes playing with and tearing fuzz off of tennis balls, chewing on large hard bones or Nylabones and will floss his teeth with a pull rope. Jake will also need a fenced yard so he doesn't get out and take himself for a walk. Jake would do best with a submissive male or female dog or as the only dog in the house with people who are willing to help him realize his full potential. Jake is being fostered in Fayetteville, NC. Please contact your adoption coordinator if you think you are a good fit for Jake. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. My name is Asha and I am a pretty, 3 year old girl who is ready for my furever home. My life has been pretty rough. Not too long ago, I had a litter of 9 beautiful babies. My owner took me and my 9 puppies and surrendered us to a shelter when my babies were only 1 week old. I don't know why and I was very sad and scared. We almost didn't make it. I had given up hope and was so confused because I knew I didn't do anything wrong. My babies and I were within an hour of being euthanized when a miracle happened. We were all saved by the nice people at SGSR. I am just so thankful to know my babies are safe and now I am ready for my new life. My foster mom says I need to tell you some things about me. First, I am house trained; that's a biggie, right? My leash manners are good and I love to play. I am good with other dogs, but would prefer a house with no cats. I am smart and I know I can learn even more with the right training, especially if there are treats involved! I love love love treats! I am being fostered in Dandridge, TN. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. I’m Nika! I am approximately a year old. Currently I’m hanging out with 2 SGSR alums and another SGSR foster (and it’s loads of fun!) but I really want to find my forever home. Like most GSDs, I am very eager to please, but I am still learning how to be the best dog I can be. My foster mom says that I have a heart of gold and just want love and acceptance. I need someone who understands that I am slow to open up, but that I am worth the wait! My foster dad, in particular, has fallen in love with me. Since I am in a home with 3 other dogs, he makes sure I get a quiet moment or two each day with him so that I can learn how special I am. At first I was shy, but now I roll over for tummy rubs whenever we get a little time away from the crew. I have tons of energy so I would do best in an active home with a big yard. Though honestly, I really want to be where everyone else is. I know how to sit very well, and if I think you might have a treat in your hand I do it just in case! I need some more practice on leash, though with a harness I am actually pretty good at it. I am completely housebroken, which foster mom says is fantastic. Though I am quickly learning that this is not okay, I can get a little mouthy. Foster mom tells me that this is not how to communicate with people, so I just need to go to a home where my forever family can continue to work with me on this little habit of mine. In fact, foster mom thinks I would be a great candidate for formal training. She has been working with me while I am here, and says it is a great way to bond with me. I really want to make her happy, she just has to help me understand how! I am the kind of girl that will give you her heart if you give me yours. I hope that I can find my forever home soon. Though I might be a little nervous at first, I settle in quickly and just want to be a part of the family. Interested in giving me the chance I deserve? Let your adoption coordinator know. I’m being fostered in TN. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Hi! My name is Jim Bob but you can call me JB for short! I am a two year old small, mixed guy that is looking for his forever home, could you be my new family? I only weigh 40 pounds so I am the perfect size for a house, condo or apartment! I am completely house trained and it is safe to let me have free roam of the house. I don’t have accidents and I don’t chew anything! All I ask is for a soft place to lie down! I live with 3 furry foster siblings…2 girls and 1 boy. The boy keeps me busy because he is a puppy and likes to play a lot! One of my foster sisters likes to play too but not as much. My other foster sister doesn’t play any, she just sleeps. So, I am good with any and all and will play as little or as much as you want! I love toys and bones and love being close to my people. I didn’t have any leash manners when I came and pulled really bad but I am getting much better with that. I also get very excited if you take me to places with a lot of other people or dogs so I still need to work on calming down a bit on that but with proper corrections I do good. My foster mom says I like to “talk a lot” sometimes but that I am a very sweet, loving guy! I haven't met a cat yet so I do not know if I will like them or not! My first family was moving and couldn’t take me with them and my next family said their small human was allergic to me so as I’m sure you can guess I am tired of bouncing around and really want a family to call my own forever!!! I am being fostered in Matthews, NC. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. There but by the Grace of God, go I. These are my thoughts as I have prepared to take this precious dog into SGSR. There are some owner surrenders that we cannot wait to get our hands on because we know that they have been mistreated, starved, abused, neglected, etc. But this dog......but this dog...... would have had a long and happy forever life with her Momma, had it not been for life situations that are beyond everyone's control. This woman waited on me to take her girl, because she was committed to giving her to SGSR, because she knew that we would find Roxie the best home that we could. This girl has been well taken care of her whole life. We know her whole life history. When you lose your husband, lose your job, and lose your home, you are not in a good situation to be able to keep your dogs. No harsh words here. This woman has tried. She has waited 6 weeks for us to find a spot in our foster network (we can ALWAYS use more fosters!) Now, on to Roxie's story..... Roxie is a 5 1/2 year old long coated GSD. She has not gotten a lot of exercise lately because she didn't have a yard to play in for the past couple of years. She does have a few pounds to lose. She is good with other dogs, but best with dogs her own size, or a bit smaller. No yappy, hyper dogs should be in the home with her, because she is nervous around them. She loves people, and is a velcro dog that will follow her person everywhere. She doesn't do well around small children, but a child that is 12 or above would work out fine, and she would love a family member who is willing and able to play fetch with her! She does pull on a leash a bit when you first start walking, but this is easily corrected with training. She will not do well around cats. She is fine in the car on rides. She doesn't mind thunderstorms, but does not like fireworks. She hates a crate, but one is not needed, because she is potty trained, and good in the home. She loves to spend time out in the yard. She sits nicely for her food. She is a really easy dog, and doesn't bark much at all. If you are drawn to help this girl who has lost her home, please let your adoption coordinator know or fill out an adoption application at: www.southeastgermanshepherdrescue.com. Roxie is being fostered near Johnson City, TN. Our adoption process consists of a telephone interview, a call to your veterinarian and a home visit. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. ~Hi everybody! My name is Gnar and I love to hear my name being called!! Not much is known about my past before I was picked up as a stray in SC and sent to a scary shelter where there were always dogs barking. I was one of the lucky ones because I got busted out of the shelter by some two legged friends from SGSR and they drove me to the vet with another lucky shepherd. I am a tad bit older than some of the dogs up for adoption, I am estimated to be between 6 and 7 years old but you couldn’t really tell that by how much I love to play with my foster sister and my two legged foster children. I absolutely LOVE running around in the backyard with my foster sister who happens to be an alumni from SGSR. We love to play keep away with toys or even the sticks that falls from the trees in the yard. We also enjoy play fighting and wrestle with each other often. When I first came into the rescue they called me heartworm positive. I had no idea what that meant except that I wasn’t allowed to run around, play to hard or even to go to the bathroom without being on a leash. I didn’t really like the restrictions but my foster family helped me through it by letting me play around in the house and they took me for walks. Once my heartworms were gone I was allowed to be in the backyard without a leash my playful side really came out!! I am a super Velcro dog, I like to follow my foster mommy or my two legged foster children around where ever they go in the house even if they sit on this weird white thing and do their business, (why can’t they do it outside like normal?) I may look all big, bad and tough but in reality I’m just a teddy bear who wants a forever home and lots of loving. With me being so old my foster family thinks I may have the beginnings of hip dysplasia or arthritis because of how I favor my back left leg. It is ok though because they give me this magic hot dog that has something crunchy inside and all my pain goes away!! I’m absolutely terrified of thunderstorms. I will whine nonstop unless someone is rubbing me because of how scared I get. I would prefer to go to a family with a big brother or sister like my foster sister. My foster mommy thinks I have a high prey drive because I like to chase the squirrels that venture in our yard. I think that also means no cats but my foster mom isn’t sure of this. A semi-active family that doesn’t have a lot of stairs and that can teach me new tricks would probably be best for me because of my hips. I don't mind going into my crate but my foster mommy says I don't need it because I'm so well behaved when no one's home. Well guys, I need to go because my foster mommy says that I’ve been on the computer too long. Bye, everyone!! Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. My name is Tucker and I love attention when I seek it. I do like to be brushed but only for a little bit. When I first came to the rescue I don’t think I was ever groomed. But my mommy has made sure I have been taken care of in every sense. I do not like my paws being played with they seem to be sensitive. I know how to come, sit, down and off. I am still learning how to heal. I heal with my sister every morning on our walks. I still would benefit from additional training. I do have a high prey drive so please do not have small animals to include small pups around me. I tend not to know my strength and I would only end up accidently hurting them. I am not too fond of cats. I do like to chase them. It takes me a bit to get use to people so please don’t be upset at me if I do not come to you immediately. It does take me a while to warm up. I do not like to be excluded from family activities. My mommy says I am a little grumpy at times. You see my sister likes to play all the time and since I am around 6+ I don’t see the point in playing all the time so I usually just let her know to leave me alone. My mommy thought I liked to play ball but nope I just take it away from my sister. I would do best in a home that is willing to give me time and able to take me anywhere with them. I love to go on rides and yes sticking my head out of the window is the best ever. I am very friendly towards people but I am protective over whoever is part of my pack. I will let strangers know that I am here so my bark will keep them away. I do not like to be kept from everyone so please do not cage me up. I am pretty good at breaking out of these enclosures. Visit our website for more information, including Frequently Asked Questions. Meet Fisher!! If Fisher could talk, we are pretty sure he would be making a living as a stand-up comedian. Fisher is a highly intelligent guy with a wisdom beyond his 6+ dog years. And oh, what a sense of humor!! Fisher can be silly and goofy and he keeps his foster mom constantly entertained with his shenanigans. Foster mom says Fisher keeps her on her toes, but not in a bad way, lol. Fisher is a funny guy!! Fisher survived a whole life of neglect and living in deplorable conditions, but you would never know that now. Fisher is a survivor and despite his tragic past, he still loves people. When I say Fisher loves people... I mean he REALLY loves his people!! Fisher is highly intuitive and we believe he can quickly realize the difference between good people and bad people or ill intentions. Fisher is not aggressive, but he is certainly wary of sketchy people... Fisher also recognizes when someone is good to him. Fisher bonds deeply with people who are good to him, and he will be a fiercely loyal companion for the right person or family. Fisher thrives on companionship!! Due to his intelligence, we believe Fisher will do best with an experienced, confident handler who can truly tap into his potential. We believe Fisher will do great as a family pet, but we also believe that Fisher will bond most deeply with his one, primary person. Fisher absolutely adores his foster mom and is a velcro dog. He recognizes when foster mom is not feeling well and comforts her with kisses and couch cuddles. Fisher looks to his foster mom for guidance and he takes comfort in her presence during a scary thunderstorm. Fisher also loves, loves, loves his toys and he is quite the toy hoarder. Fisher does fantastic with all dogs... big and small, and he is very playful with other dogs. We do think that Fisher would do best in a home with no cats and we also feel he would do best in a home with no young/small children due to his size and silly antics. Fisher made it through his heartworm treatment with flying colors and he is now ready to find his forever person or family. He is a total lovebug who is not destructive in the house, potty trained, rides great in the car and is doing great learning leash manners. Fisher would like to find a person or family who will include him in their life activities and spend time with him... cuddling on the couch, park walks, jogging, hiking, camping or just driving around... whatever you do, he wants to be with you. Fisher is being fostered in Tri-Cities, TN area.
